Welcome to the School of Dentistry’s annual Research Day
Thank you for joining us in our 2026 celebration of the bold ideas and breakthrough discoveries of our students, postdoctoral trainees, staff and faculty who generate new knowledge in our research laboratories and clinics. Research Day is a longstanding annual tradition that highlights research that is vital to advancing our school’s mission as an academic institution. From basic and translational science to clinical and health services research, this dynamic showcase demonstrates the creativity, momentum and real-world impact of our work.
Each year we have about 150 posters related to the school’s five research themes: Cancer Biology and Therapeutics; Clinical, Population and Educational Research; Craniofacial, Skeletal Biology and Disease; Integrative Neurobiology and Pain; and Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine. We also feature our D4 Immersion Pathway students as they present their final Pathways projects as part of Research Day.
This year we are pleased to welcome as our keynote speaker Dr. Ophir Klein, the David and Meredith Kaplan Distinguished Chair in Children’s Health at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. Dr Klein serves as the inaugural Executive Director of Guerin Children’s and Executive Vice Dean for Children’s Services. He is a global leader whose team has made seminal contributions to understanding the development of normal and diseased organs, as well as elucidating mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of complex inherited disorders, many of which manifest during early neonatal and childhood life.
We thank the Office of Research staff who organized this event, along with the students and researchers who present their work today. A sincere thank-you to all the faculty who have mentored the projects and who will serve as judges for various awards. We are also grateful to the companies that have partnered with our school as exhibitors, sponsors or advertisers in supporting student research.

“Development and Renewal in the Oral Cavity”
Research and accomplishments: Dr. Klein is a global leader whose team has made seminal contributions to understanding the development of normal and diseased organs, as well as elucidating mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of complex inherited disorders, many of which manifest during early neonatal and childhood life. He has led the establishment of Guerin Children’s as a respected leader in pediatric scholarly research, training, and specialty clinical services. Dr Klein has received multiple honors, including election to the National Academy of Medicine and the American Association of Physicians. He has had multiple advisory roles to the NIH and led professional societies.
Biography: Ophir Klein serves as the inaugural Executive Director of Cedars-Sinai Guerin Children’s and Executive Vice Dean for Children’s Services, and he is the David and Meredith Kaplan Distinguished Chair in Children’s Health.
Dr. Klein was educated at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a B.A. in Spanish Literature. He subsequently attended Yale University School of Medicine, where he received a Ph.D. in Genetics and an M.D. He then completed residencies at Yale-New Haven Hospital in Pediatrics and at UCSF in Clinical Genetics. Prior to his Cedars-Sinai appointment, Dr Klein served as Chief of Medical Genetics and Craniofacial Anomalies and Director of the Institute for Human Genetics at UCSF.
