SARANAC LAKE — Students from four high schools have had the chance to see the medical field in action through the New Vision program. The students from Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake and Long Lake Central Schools, take part in the program through the Franklin, Hamilton and Essex BOCES and Adirondack Health at the Adirondack Medical Center in
Saranac Lake. “It’s something that opens their eyes as they go through the whole process,” AMC Communications Director Joe Riccio said. “It shows them that this is not just groups working on islands on their own. They are all tied together and working to do the same job for the patients.” “It’s very exciting because everything connects,” instructor Alison Riley-Clark said. “They learn all of the content about anatomy, physiology
and medical terminology and they go into the hospital and have observational rotations that are very powerful because they were able to see what they learn in the classroom applied in the clinical world. They get to see all of that connect.” Students take part in classes and get a chance to see various departments of the hospital in action, from the Emergency Room to the pharmacy to billing. “It has been wonderful to
have them here,” Pharmacist Mark Simkins said. “They are the cream of the crop, and we try to show them something different each day.” “Mark has been such a great supporter of the program,” Clark said. “He will have all of the staff take them to the different areas and they have created a mini-curriculum. It’s almost like they get a minicourse in each area and see all of the aspects of a small community hospital.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 5
