Annual Scrabble Tourney scheduled By Katherine Clark keith@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE — What is a eight letter, 11 point word for literacy? The answer is Scrabble. The Literacy Volunteers of Essex/ Franklin Counties will be holding its Winter Scrabble Tournament and Scrabble Day on Saturday, March 2, in Saranac Lake and Port Henry. The Saranac Lake event will be held at St. Bernard’s School, 63 River St. The Port Henry event will be held at the Literacy Volunteers’ offices located at 3265 Broad St. “Scrabble is a game a lot of people don’t pick up as much anymore, everyone plays Words With Friends on their phones even though its the same thing,” Director of the Literacy Volunteers Maria Burke said.

At North Country School, this two-person, flatbed truck is charged overnight and used primarily for transporting trash, recycling, furniture and other large, bulky items around the 200-acre campus.
Electric vehicle part of NCS fleet LAKE PLACID — In midFebruary, North Country School took delivery of an unusual item: a small, fully electric, zero emission vehicle. Made by Minnesotabased e-ride Industries, the so-called neighborhood vehicles are popular with colleges, universities, and U.S. military facilities as they try to reduce costs and meet institutional goals for clean energy. At North Country School, the two-person, flatbed truck is charged overnight and used primarily for trans-
porting trash, recycling, furniture, and other large, bulky items around the 200acre campus. It is not used on public roads. “We believe that this is the first truck of its kind in the Adirondacks,” said John Culpepper, Director of Facilities and Sustainability at North Country School and Camp Treetops. “More important, of course, are the reductions we expect to see in our consumption of gasoline and our carbon footprint.” The new vehicle replaces an aging one-ton dump
truck. Culpepper estimates that the School and Camp will save 500 gallons of gas a year for an average annual decrease in the carbon footprint of more than 10,000 pounds. The cost savings of nearly $2,000 a year will be put to good use elsewhere. The new electric truck is just the latest in a long series of steps intended to conserve natural resources and protect the environment. These include extensive recycling and composting; converting all building heating systems away from fossil fuels to re-
newable sources of energy; and sustainable forestry practices that utilize lumber cut from campus forests in construction and wood shop projects. The School and Camp also operate a small, multi-purpose farm that produces eggs, poultry, pork, maple syrup, wool, and thousands of pounds of vegetables, greens, and herbs. By working on the farm, students and campers learn first-hand about local food production and practices of sustainable living.

By Shaun Kittle shaun@denpubs.com UPPER JAY — Celtic rock band Callanach will perform at the Upper Jay Art Center on Saturday, Feb. 23. The band’s name is a Gaelic word meaning “loud,” but Ryan Rovito said that doesn’t translate into abrasive. “I like music that can change my mood,” Rovito said. “This will be a very high energy show.”

SARANAC LAKE — The Lake Champlain Chapter of Trout Unlimited will again provide scholarships for interested young men and women 12 to 17 years old to attend DEC’s popular summer camp program. The camps, located at Camp Colby, Pack Forest, Debruce, and Rushford, provide a great opportunity to learn more about our environment and to have fun in the summer. Parents provide transport to and from the camp for the one-week sessions which are conducted in july and august. The scholarships are a memorial to Sam Theusen and Dennis Aprill, outstanding educators, leaders and anglers who devoted their life to the North Country. To apply, send a onepage letter telling why you are interested in learning more about the outdoors in New York State to Gretchen Comfort, 749 Norrisville Road, Schuyler Falls, NY, 12985 by March 31. For more info for campers and parents, go to dec.ny.gov/education.
