Newcomb VIC hosts program on garden planning

In Review: The Pink Panther Strikes Again

NEWCOMB — On Saturday, April 17 from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., the Visitor Interpretive Center in Newcomb invites all garden enthusiasts to join Master Gardener Lorraine Miga for a program entitled Planning a Garden & Starting Seeds Indoors. There will be demonstrations on how to sow seeds indoors in preparation for spring planting and participants will learn how best to plan a garden. Also, learn the importance of frost dates and row covers and learn why crop rotation should be done. Lastly, get tips on thinning and transplanting seedlings, what should be directly planted and much more. Pre-registration is not required and the program is free. Also, on Saturday, April 17 there will be a family trail walk on the VIC’s trails from 10 - 11:30 a.m. By joining VIC staff on this trail walk, families will discover the diversity of a forest habitat. Look for birds, insects, nests, woodland wildflowers, forest floor plants and much more. Pre-registration is not required and this program is also free. For further information on these two events, contact the VIC at 5822000 or visit their website at www.apa.state.ny.us.

By Hillary Bureau - NCS student writer denpubs@denpubs.com NEWCOMB — French accents, cross dressing, a mad woman and Pink Panthers are all a great concoction for fun and laughter. “The Pink Panther Strikes Again,” a play written by William Gleason, was performed at Newcomb Central School Friday, March 26 and Saturday, March 27 and was an awesome success. The program reads, “Chief inspector Jacqueline Clousea fights for her life and the future of mankind in the most bazaar and dangerous caper of her clumsy career. Pauline Dreyfus, once Chief Inspector and now a raving Lunatic, holds the world at bay with the ultimate weapon, the Doomsday Machine!” For those who missed the theatrical comedy put on by the Newcomb High School students, you truly missed a once in a lifetime performance. Director and English teacher, Terri Smith rewrote many aspects of the play to incorporate an Adirondack theme. It was very amusing to learn that one now needs to have a passport to travel to Lake George. I have to say the most hilarious as-

pect of the entire performance was actor Shelby Poulton’s ability to speak English words with an outrageous and priceless French accent. She reminded me so much of Steve Martin in recent film adaptations. She even had Clouseau’s absurd stance perfected hands crossed behind her back and stomach pushed forward with a squinting facial expression. On top of the posture and accent, she learned a ton of lines. Well done Shelby. Sassy Pink Panther, played by Larissa Roy was just as entertaining to watch as Roy’s role as nerdy genius, Professor Helen Fassbender. Both roles were diverse and she acted them well. Brandon Poulton switched it up after playing a reserved butler at the Fassbender family home. He threw us all a curve ball by walking down the center aisle with a white sparkle dress, a Dolly Parton wig, and a huge white feather in his hair, singing to the tune of “I Feel Like a Woman” by Shania Twain. His performance was a riot. This play was definitely something to laugh about. Congratulations to the entire cast, you did a wonderful job. Bravo!
