LAKE PLACID Ñ Lake Placid High School held its graduation ceremony for the class of 2014 on June 27 at the Olympic Speedskating Oval. David Knapik, son of Jozef Knapik and Anna Gemzova was named salutatorian. Erin Weaver, daughter of Tim and Kate Weaver, was been named valedictorian. In his speech, Knapik said he was ecstatic when he first learned he had been named salutatorian. Ò However, these initial feelings soon turned to fear as the school year progressed because I began to realize the responsibility that this title carries Ñ the responsibility to spread words of wisdom and leave a last impression on all of my fellow classmates,Ó he said. Continuing, he urged his classmates not to rest on their laurels. Ò I hope that all of you treat accomplishments as reminders of the great work you are doing, and that these accomplishments urge you to strive for more,Ó Knapik said. Ò It is great to celebrate and bask in the glory of past actions, but it is crucial that accomplishments be taken as steps to go further. Treat them as such, and always challenge yourself. It is important to be proud, but do not let this pride cloud the rest of your life.Ó In her speech, Weaver traced her classesÕ trajectory through the school system, explaining what they learned. “I mean, first there were the ABCs, counting apples and oranges, walking in a single file line — decidedly tough material,Ó Weaver said. Ò Then came chapter books, mastering kickball in elementary gym class, and choosing outfits that actually matched.” Weaver went on. CONTINUED ON PAGE 7
