30 - Adirondack Fever 2010
See the Adirondacks from snowshoes NEWCOMB — Snowshoeing is as easy as walking, yet many are intimidated by doing it in the Adirondacks. Educators at the Newcomb VIC will offer winter workshops exploring the history of snowshoes, the different varieties of snowshoes, and will then practice the fun and heart-healthy sport on the VIC trails along Rich Lake. Instructors from the Adirondack Mountain Club will visit the VIC beginning Feb. 13 to offer a Chilly Snowshoe Festival. Events are free of charge and run from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Snowshoes will be provided. Workshops are ideal for all ages. They will highlight scavenger hunts along VIC trails as well as many events for children. Aside from workshops, the Newcomb VIC features 3.6 miles of trails for independent skiing and snowshoeing. “The trails have already been very popular among snowshoers,” said Rynda McCray an Adirondack Park Agency environmental educator at the Newcomb VIC. “There’s plenty of snow for skiing as well, so wax em up and come on out.” The trail systems are available for public use from dawn until dusk seven days a week and are free of charge. The buildings at each VIC are open from 9 am - 5 pm Tues-
day-Saturday. For more information on the VIC or the
trail system, call 582-2000 or visit www.adkvic.org.
