By Maggie Morgan maggie@denpubs.com

WARRENSBURG Ñ The Leatherstocking Honor Flight, a program that offers WWII veterans a free trip to Washington D.C., departed on their final flight of the season on Oct. 4. The program takes four trips a year, two in the spring and two in the fall, giving veterans a chance to see breathtaking memorials that many of them would never have the chance to experience firsthand. Denise Di Resta, Director of Warren CountyÕ s VeteransÕ Services, was busy preparing for the final flight of the season which left on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 4 a.m. For this trip, Warren CountyÕ s VeteransÕ Services brought eight vets and eight guardians to Albany Airport where they would begin the all-day voyage. The trip is completely free to all WWII and Korean war veterans who must fill out an application and are chosen on a first come, first serve basis. The entire journey costs around $350 which is covered by donations and fundraisers. Ò It is the time of their life,Ó said Di Resta. Ò They are overwhelmed, itÕ s a wonderful day, they didnÕ t think people cared and we do.Ó CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

WARRENSBURG Ñ Garlic, a cultural phenomenon for about 7,000 years, will be celebrated at the Friday Oct. 10 edition of the Warrensburg FarmersÕ Market. Set for 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., the annual Garlic Festival of the Warrensburg FarmersÕ Market features a variety of offerings related to the pungent bulb. While garlic was once believed to repel werewolves and vampires and to cure diseases, it now

has a reputation among many as a preventative medicine, as well as giving a variety of dishes a distinctive flavor and aroma. Several vendors will be selling an array of garlic varieties, far more distinctive than the ones available in supermarkets. Some of the vendors will be offering samplings of dishes using garlic as a key ingredient. Recipes using garlic scapes, whole bulbs and cloves will be available.

Contests are to be held for the best dishes Ñ entrees, appetizers, soups, pasta, vegetable dishes and desserts Ñ featuring garlic. Information on the folklore and mystique and traditional medicinal uses of garlic will also be on hand. Demonstrations will also be offered on how to decoratively display garlic. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3
