New Adk. Alliance aims to protect lakes

This Week New library policy

WARRENSBURG Ñ The Richards Library regrets that it is no longer accepting contributions of old books, hardcover or paperback, text books, VHS tapes, magazines or other related material. They will be accepting hardcover books and childrenÕ s books that are less than two years old and in excellent condition (no yellowed, ripped or marked up pages/covers); DVDs only, unscratched and in their original packaging and CDs and audiobooks unscratched and in their original packaging. The library values and appreciates all past and current contributions from past patrons and hopes this change in policy does not hinder future generosity.

SCHROON LAKE Ñ Concern over the spread of invasive species and other threats to area waterways has prompted a new coalition of lake associations that represents the interests of an estimated 50,000 Adirondack residents. Officials representing several dozen lake associations met recently and drafted a mission statement for their group now being formed — the Adirondack Lakes Alliance. The group intends to advocate for laws and regulations that protect waterways in the Adirondacks, according to several of the alliance’s founding members. More than 50 people representing about 30 lakes in five Adirondack counties participated in the meeting, according to Ed Griesmer of the Loon Lake Park District Association. The gathering occurred about two weeks ago in Horicon Town Hall, he said. Ò The Alliance will be sharing information on what the lake association members Ñ the Ô hands-onÕ people on the front line battling invasive species — are accomplishing on issues now facing lakes,” he said. THURMAN — As a bottle of champagne was smashed against the front of a locomotive June 26, the Saratoga-North Creek Railway’s new short-haul passenger service was inaugurated. The new 50-minute scenic trip from Thurman to North Creek is expected to bring 12,000 or more tourists from
