L. George board sets new zoning regulations

thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE Ñ Changes to local zoning laws that allow buildings along particular stretches of Canada St. to be as tall as 70 feet high Ñ and set strict design standards for new commercial buildings Ñ was unanimously approved Monday, July 22 by the village board. The changes were approved by the board following a public hearing during which only a few of the dozen or so speakers expressed reservations on the proposal, and the rest voiced solid support. The prevailing positivism over the zoning changes was in sharp contrast to earlier public meetings on the issue. The approval of the zoning changes sets the stage for a six-story Marriott hotel & conference center to be built on the northern end of Canada St. by local developer Dave Kenny, pending approval by the village Planning Board and the Adirondack Park Agency. Summerfest heats up, temps cool By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com CHESTERTOWN Ñ Due to the oppressive heat, ChestertownÕ s annual Summerfest had a slow start Saturday, but the large crowd that turned out as the sun slumped in the sky had plenty of fun well into the night, event organizers reported this week. The largest lineup of vendors in Sum-
merfestÕ s history were on site on the town recreation field — but through the afternoon, few people were turning out to browse among their wares. But the expansive evening crowd that gathered enjoyed live music by singersongwriter Steven L. Smith, dancing, fireworks, plus a children’s tug of war competition, a mini petting zoo and other family-friendly activities. The Lake George Park Commission voted Tuesday July 22 to establish such regulations, and their action was immediately hailed as a landmark decision by local lawmakers and environmental leaders. After the unanimous vote was taken in the commissionÕ s meeting held at a Georgian Resort banquet room, Lake George Town Supervisor Dennis Dickinson stepped up to thank the commissioners.
