You are what you eat...

We all need food as fuel to survive. However how does what we eat really affect us, from our weight to our wellbeing. Well it is well known that eating fruit and vegetables, which are packed with nutrients (antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fibre) help us maintain a healthy weight by keeping us fuller for longer. It’s recommended that filling half your plate with vegetables and fruit at every meal is a great way to sustain a healthy balanced diet. Also swapping excessively sugary snacks for healthy sugars such as fresh fruit, nuts or vegetables will also benefit you throughout the day.

Don’t fear the carb! For a long time carbohydrates have been misunderstood as a bad dietary choice when trying to be ‘healthy’. However carbohydrates are healthy and your main source of energy. Make sure when you eat carbs that it’s at your most active part of the day, for example before a workout. Think about what carbs you’re eating, porridge oats, potatoes and rice are great sources of good quality complex carbohydrates. Controlled

Meal time is nutrition time...

portions of these carbohydrates which are timed correctly can have a great benefit to your workouts and general energy throughout the day.

Your diet needs to be varied so you get the right amount of nutrients exactly when you need them. Ensuring that you drink the recommended 2 litres a day of water is also necessary. Water aids bodily functions, ensures food is digested properly, and also hydrates the body which enables concentration and general wellbeing.

health bars, as they aren’t necessarily as healthy as they may seem. They’re often packed with hidden sugars. Fresh produce rather than processed foods is always the better option when considering your bodies health. Also eating food when its best In season will mix up your diet, and you’ll enjoy fresh produce at its best. Try avoiding pre prepared and packed meals as they can contain more sugar and fat. However food brand Charlie Bingham has set a new standard when it comes to pre prepared meals for the oven. He uses quality ingredients, that taste great and also do good. They’ll also fill you up when you don’t have time to cook from scratch.

We’ve become a food loving nation. Due to advertisements, quirky restaurant concepts, tips and tricks from professional chefs on social media and TV show competitions, we can’t get enough! Ready Steady Cook in the 90’s to Master Chef and Bake Off, they’ve become the nation’s tv guilty pleasure when it comes to evening viewing, due to their easy watch and knowledge filled content, a combination we seem to enjoy!

Sophie says.....

“You need a nutritional love diet. Don’t put the junk stuff in your bodyit’s not going to do you any good.”

A Eurovision in the key of Celebration Austria wins 69th Eurovision song contest.

ustria has won the Eurovision song contest after JJ triumphed in Basel with their song Wasted Love, an operatic ballad with soaring vocals that mutates into a club anthem for the finale. It is the third time the country has won, with JJ following in the footsteps of Udo Jürgens in 1965 and Conchita Wurst in 2014. Switzerland, which hosted the first ever Eurovision song contest in 1956, was the venue this year after Nemo won in Malmö last year with their song The Code. They presented the trophy to JJ, who called for “more love”. After finishing a reprise of their winning song, a clearly emotional JJ said: “Thank you Europe, I love you all.”

Eurovision 2025

Viennese-born JJ has a range from counter tenor to soprano, and studies classical music. He cowrote the winning song with Teodora Špirić and Thomas Turner. JJ has previously appeared under his given name, Johannes Pietsch, on The Voice UK. Austria will be expected to host in 2026,

with Vienna having twice held the competition before.

Israel finished second, having led for some time after a large public vote put them into the top spot. Organisers later said a Eurovision song contest crew member was hit with paint after two people tried to rush on stage to disrupt the Israeli singer Yuval Raphael’s performance. Estonia came third and the widely tipped precontest favourites from Sweden came fourth. It was another difficult night for the UK. In recent years, Sam Ryder’s Space Man has been the only song that has bucked the trend for poor results, finishing second in 2022. No other UK entry since 2012 has finished higher than 15th, and this year’s effort by Remember Monday continued that record.

The girl band’s song about the aftermath of a wild night out – What The Hell Just Happened? – was granted automatic entry to the final, as the UK is one of the largest net contributors to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which organises the show.

Winner Austria's JJ wins the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest in Basel, Switzerland
"Love

is the strongest force in the world, let's spread more love," the 24-year-old says as JJ collected the trophy for his song Wasted Love.

Keep on running A healthy injection for mind and

body by Fiona Snailham.

Back in April 2019, 42,906 people toed the start line of the London marathon.

Whilst the race winners, Eliud Kipchoge and Brigid Kosgei, finished the run in 2:02:37 and 2:18:20 respectively, the vast majority of runners took four to four and a half hours to complete the 26.2 mile course. The ballot for entry to the 2020 race has already closed, with the expectation that over 415,000 people will have applied to run. But the popularity of running is not restricted to the marathon distance: park runs are also booming. Organised by volunteers, the movement offers free, weekly, timed 5k runs in parks across the world. In May 2019, over 600 events were hosted in the UK each week, with approximately 154,000 runners taking part.

But why? What makes thousands of people drag themselves out of bed to head to the park

every Saturday morning?

The positive effects of running, both physical and emotional, should really make us all set the alarm and reach for our trainers. Technological advancements and deskbound jobs mean we live in a world that is increasingly sedentary, yet research is continually demonstrating the need to be physically active if we wish to live into our twilight years. Physically, there are numerous benefits attached to the humble run.

Health

A 2014 study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology suggests that runners have a lower overall risk of mortality, and a 45 percent lower risk of death due to heart disease when compared to their nonrunning peers. Regular running, at any pace,

u

strengthens the heart muscle and renders it more efficient. A healthy heart means improved blood flow around the body, a lower resting heart rate, lower blood pressure and a decreased risk of thrombosis (blood clots). Whilst running, the body works harder than it does when at rest, burning more fuel to support the increased action. Such an increase in calorie consumption can help with weight loss, combatting obesity related diseases like type 2 diabetes, fatty lived disease and some cancers. At the same time, pounding the pavements strengthens the musculoskeletal system. Going for a run works all the muscles in the legs and requires the runner to engage their core for stability. Strong muscles stabilise the joints and reduce the risk of injury in daily life. As a weight bearing exercise, running

tresses, and strengthens, the bones. This makes is particularly beneficial for women, who tend to lose bone density when oestrogen levels decrease during the menopause.

If the physical gains alone do not convince, consider the positive impact on emotional health. The JAMA Psychiatry journal recently published a study which supports the theory that physical activity can be an effective prevention strategy for depression. A regular running schedule can improve sleep and relieve stress, both factors which have a knock-on effect on mental well-being. Moreover, increased physical ability can have a positive impact on body image and raise selfesteem. Who wouldn’t want that?

Tempted but don’t know where to start?

Try the Couch to 5k programme, offered by running clubs across the UK and available via a range of apps.

Inspiration: As well as Laura, who features on the NHS Couch to 5K podcasts, you can also be coached by celebrities Jo Whiley, Sarah Millican, Sanjeev Kohli or Michael Johnson.

What is Couch to 5K?

Couch to 5K is a running plan for absolute beginners. It was developed by a new runner, Josh Clark, who wanted to help his 50-something mum get off the couch and start running, too. The plan involves 3 runs a week, with a day of rest in between, and a different schedule for each of the 9 weeks.

“GT by CITROËN shows how the worlds of virtual and real-life motoring can join together to create a truly innovative partnership. We were delighted that Citroen approached us and gave us the opportunity to combine our creative strengths to build this very special concept car. To see the car take shape in game and then for real has been a truly unique experience as our work normally stays in the digital world. I just hope I can get behind the wheel of GT by CITROËN and drive it on a real race track!” Kazanori Yamauchi, President of Polyphony Digital Inc and creator of Gran Turismo.

All these features play an active role in reducing lift and drag, pinning the car to the ground.

The Wankel test laboratory with a fascinating form: the Mercedes-Benz C 111. The stunning Mercedes Vision OneEleven concept is a reborn.

Enter the Vision One-Eleven, a concept car that riffs on the late Sixties like Jimi Hendrix in his pomp and stirs in a big slice of Eighties vaporwave for good measure.

Series

The Mercedes-Benz C111 was a series of experimental automobiles produced by Daimler-Benz in the 1960s and 1970s. The company was experimenting with new engine technologies, including Wankel engines, diesel engines, and turbochargers, and used the basic C111 platform as a testbed. Other experimental features included multi-link rear suspension, gull-wing doors and a luxurious interior with leather trim and air conditioning.

Mercedes

Engineering

Behind the spectacular outer design lay some highly innovative engineering: the experimental vehicle was powered by a threerotor Wankel engine and the body was made of fibreglass-reinforced plastic. The second version from 1970 with its four-rotor engine could reach speeds up to 300 km/h.

If you love Bertone’s Lamborghini Marzal or Pininfarina’s Ferrari Modulo, and spent Saturday tea-times rapt in front of Knight Rider, this one’s for you.

History

The first version of the C111 was completed in 1969, and presented at the 1969 IAA in Frankfurt. The car used a fiberglass body shell and with a mid-mounted threerotor direct fuel injected Wankel engine (code named M950F). The next C111 appeared in 1970; it was shown at the 1970 Geneva International Motor Show. It used a four-rotor engine producing 260 kW (349 hp). The car reportedly could reach a speed of 300 km/h (186 mph).

Mercedes

Infinite potential Futuristic wedge shape, gullwing doors and eyecatching metallic orange paintwork: the exterior of the Mercedes-Benz C 111 alone was enough to cause a sensation during its première at the 1969 Frankfurt Motor Show.

It’s certainly a striking, attention-grabbing orange slice of flamboyance.

Concept

The fascinating laboratory on wheels never went into series production.

Instead, several record-breaking cars in the 1970s continued the success story of the C 111.

The clearest inspiration

This was the first in a series of experimental cars that explored different forms of propulsion, aerodynamics, and culminated in a handful of world record setters.

Mercedes Vision One-Eleven: C111 reborn as electric supercar.

Goal

‘Our goal at Mercedes-Benz is not to do styling –our goal is to create icons,’ said Gordon Wagener, Mercedes Group’s chief design officer. ‘To me, that makes the difference between mainstream design and luxury.’

Quote

‘Our all-electric vision show car is the modernday interpretation of the C 111, which was avantgarde at the time. The element of surprise comes from its exceptionally clean, purist and, at the same time, extremely muscular proportions.’

The amazing Mercedes C111 is 50 years old. Stats: At 4440mm long, 1825mm wide and just 1120mm high.
