Yellow Jacket Football is here again and Munson Stadium is a special, special place to watch young people compete and perform. We have proud traditions here in Denison on the field and in the classrooms. 2024 will be another year of student and athlete successes for your Denison Yellow Jackets. We can’t wait for you to see Denison kids perform and show you how much they believe in themselves and their program. Thank you for being here to support our hard-working players and coaches.
A special welcome is extended to the many proud Yellow Jacket alumni attending tonight. Your legacy is one of excellence and the young people you watch perform tonight have gladly accepted the high standards set by those before them. Our challenge is to continue raising the bar.
Denison High School student athletes are committed to doing the things that make champions on and off the field of competition. Being part of Denison’s legacy of academic achievement gives our athletes additional examples of success to point to in our community. Their efforts and the outstanding quality of our kids, faculty, and coaches will be reflected as excellence in every area we are measured going forward.
Sportsmanship is one of the most critical life lessons we teach in high school athletics. Please be a part of that lesson by exhibiting only the best behavior toward our opponents, opposing fans, and our game officials before, during, and after the game. In Yellow Jacket Athletics we will work every day to produce better people, better citizens, and better athletes. We ask your assistance in achieving this part of our mandate to develop high quality character in our kids.
Tonight’s show presented by Yellow Jacket Football, the Touch of Gold Marching Band, our Jacket Cheer squad, and the Stingerettes drill team will be exciting and worth every penny! Thank you once again for being here in support of people.

As a 2006 graduate of Denison High School, I can truly say “It’s Great to be a Yellow Jacket!” and there is no place else I would rather be. After graduation from DHS, I attended Texas A&M University and earned my Bachelors in Kinesiology. I soon discovered my passion for teaching after taking a teaching job in a town just a little south, but I got home as quickly as I could. Since being back in Denison, I have coached 2 years at the middle school, 5 years at the JV level, and will be starting my 3rd season as the varsity head coach. I have been married to my husband Cody for six years, and we have 2 sweet boys, Parker and Hayes.
My name is Jana Kelly and I am entering my 21st year in education. Thirteen of those years have been right here with DISD coaching volleyball and track and teaching elementary PE at Terrell Elementary. As a graduate of Southeastern Oklahoma State University, I have called the Texoma area home for several years. I have been married to my husband, Kevin for 10 years and we stay busy raising 5 kids; Alyson(17) and Jamison(15) Milner, Cameron(9), Jordan(7), and Blair(3). Teaching and coaching have been a huge blessing to me and I look forward to having a positive impact on the lives of my students.
Hello, I’m Gayle Bigelow, proud to have spent 16 incredible years at DENISON ISD, capping off 26 years of inspiring students through teaching and coaching. Currently, I am thrilled to be an assistant varsity coach for girls volleyball and basketball. My life is enriched by my 29- year marriage to fellow Yellow Jacket, Gary Bigelow, our three amazing children Justin, Hunter, and daughter in law, Lauren. The icing on the cake is our precious grandson, Boone.

Historical Timeline is Rich for Denison Yellow Jackets Football
By Lynn Burkhead Radio Play-by-Play Voice of the Yellow Jackets
When the Denison High School Yellow Jackets visit their neighbors to the south to open up the 2023 season on Aug. 25th, the annual grudge match between Denison and Sherman will add another storied chapter to the longest continuous rivalry among two high schools anywhere in the state of Texas. With Denison seeking an 11th straight win in this series that dates back to 1901, the 125th edition of the Battle of the Ax (BOTA) promises to be a special contest between these two rivals.
Interestingly, games between the two schools are believed to have been played in 1900 and 1907 but there are no newspaper records to verify that either way (both the Denison Herald and the Sherman Democrat newspaper offices burned down in the early years of the 1900s). Research conducted by longtime Yellow Jackets reporter and Herald Democrat sports editor Jason Della Rosa shows that the first newspaper story about a game between Denison and Sherman was in 1901 and it doesn’t say that it was the first football game between the two schools. By 1906, the Yellow Jackets began to play other high schools in Texomaland and beyond, producing a 5-0 season that year where DHS tied Harshaw 0-0, beat Sherman 5-0 on two occasions, and also defeated Celeste, Van Alstyne, and Elmwood College. Over the next decade, the Yellow Jackets would also play Pottsboro, Bonham, Denton, Gainesville, McKinney, Greenville, Durant, Whitesboro, and even the Austin College B Team in 1914, a game that the Jackets won by a reported 26-6 margin.
After no games were played in 1918 due to the influenza pandemic that swept across the world, the Jackets would earn their first district championship and playoff appearance in 1922 when Denison went 8-1-1, losing only to Cleburne in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs to end the season. Over the years, the Jackets have earned 27 district titles and 32 playoff appearances, the most recent district title being in 2013 and the most recent playoff appearance occurring in 2021.
A mix of triumph and loss would then take place through the remainder of the 1920 and 1930s, with one of the biggest games of note in that era occurring on Sept. 15, 1939 when the first game was played at Munson Stadium. While Sulphur Springs upended Denison on Sept. 15 that year by a 13-7 margin, it would mark the beginning of the Jacket’s longtime run at the iconic location (Note: the old Munson Stadium was rebuilt from the ground up after the 2013 season had concluded).
The next decade was kind to the Yellow Jackets program, with the team and its city enjoying a superb run of success in the 1940s thanks to championship caliber coaches like Pat Pattison, Leroy Crabtree, and Les Cranfill among others. That included the Jacket’s state semifinal berth in 1948 where a 20-8 loss ended Denison’s hopes for a state title.
Since 1949, the BOTA rivalry’s coveted trophy - inscribed on the wooden handle with the words Ye Olde Battle Ax - has gone to the game’s winner for the next year. Originally featuring a single silver ax blade (where the winner, score, and year are engraved), the trophy was created by Denison ice cream parlor owner Jack Barker to give the teams something positive to compete for after a run of vandalism. A symbol that represents good sportsmanship, a never quit competitive spirit, and athletic excellence, the Ax - which had a second silver ax blade added in 1989 - has endured for generations now.
The 1950s were a mix of wins, losses and ties for the Jackets, while the 1960s were good for the Jackets, including a 9-1 campaign in 1962. The 1970s featured a mixture of success and disappointment, but a bright spot was the 6-3-1 season during the 1976 campaign as head coach Jerry Blankenship led the way. Denison would upset Plano 14-9 to spoil the Wildcats homecoming game that year and notch the only victory against the Wildcats that either Sherman or Denison has ever been able to secure.
After Marty Criswell arrived in 1981, a renaissance of Yellow Jackets football began with a 29-game winning streak and a 16-0 state championship run in 1984, a season that ended with a 27-13 win over Tomball. By the 1980s end, the Jackets were an annual power in Class 4A and during the 1990s, Bob Brown took over and led the Jackets to a 44-4 run from 1995-97 that featured three consecutive runs to the 4A state title game. After Brown retired as the Jackets’ winningest coach in program history, Cody White took over in 2007. Before he left five seasons later, the Jackets had authored a ferocious 44-43 fourth quarter comeback win in the 2007 BOTA game, a 12-1 season in 2008, and a 13-2 state semifinal run in 2009. Chad Rogers found success in Denison from 2012 through the delayed COVID-19 season of 2020, winning a co-district title in 2013 and going 8-1 against Sherman during his time in D-Town.
Now in his third season, Brent Whitson—only the fifth head coach the Jackets have had from 1981 until now—is continuing the run of Yellow Jacket success with a playoff berth and a perfect record against the rivals from the south including last year’s incredible 28-21 come-from-behind BOTA triumph. As Denison enters the 2024 season under Whitson, the Jackets will feature a powerful, balanced offensive attack; a talented defense hungry for success; and a program looking for more wins, trophies, and accolades.
No matter the outcome this year for the 121st team in Denison High School’s rich football history, the Jackets will storm onto the field every Friday night this fall believing they are going to win and that as Marty Criswell showed us all a generation ago with his iconic statement, that “It’s GREAT to be a Yellow Jacket!”
