Introduction

My name is Kyla Denise T. Roxas, a first-year BS Architecture student at the Mapua University - School of Architecture, Industrial Design and the Built Environment.

Arts and drawing have always piqued my interest since I was a child, but when it came time to choose a high school, I went to a science-oriented school. After that, I transferred to a university where I could excel in architecture.

Currently, I am in my 1st term, but I can say that the experiences I have encountered during the past three months have been a roller coaster ride. For the course Graphics I/AR101P, I had two exercises and six plates for the whole term. Challenging is an understatement to describe the outputs that we had to submit. Nevertheless, it allowed me to improve my lettering and drafting skills, which are fundamental in architecture. Hence, during my 1st term in AR101P, I had to change a lot, including writing and using drafting materials.

This portfolio is a selection of my outputs during my first term in AR101P that encompasses a diagnostic plate, two lettering exercises, and six plates.

Diagnostic Plate

The target was to familiarize ourselves with the different figures and shapes through the use/handling a pencil. We were assigned to construct objects from lines out of simple figures or geometric shapes for this plate. To execute this, our instructor told us to use graphing paper and drafting materials.

For my output, I chose to draw a car out of lines and circles. Since the vehicle has a lot of corners, I mostly used lines for this plate.

Aside from the tires, circles are not seen. No shading techniques are observed.

EX 100

To help us practice writing in freehand, we had to accomplish ten pages filled with lines and circles are drawn without rulers or templates. Moreover, each of them had to be done in a single stroke and following the direction shown.

For this exercise, I had to dedicate a few days to perfect writing in freehand and in a single stroke. This exercise was a turning point because I had to practice not using rulers or circular templates.

EX 200

The instructor wanted us to perfect our freehand writing skills through writing letters and numbers. For this exercise, we had to finish six pages. We should do each of them in a single stroke according to the direction shown. Moreover, we should manually do this.

Just like the previous exercise, I had to devote a few days to perfecting freehand and single-stroke writing for this too.

However, this was relatively easier because I had already practiced freehand writing in EX100.

PL 100

This plate was assigned to us to develop skills in making architectural lettering manually. Like the previous exercises, each should be done in a single stroke, following measurements for letter spaces according to the direction given and manually executed.

Like the past exercises, in PL100, we had to write words and letters to practice freehand.

PL 200

We were given this plate to familiarize ourselves with geometrical figures, planar geometry, and the ability to sketch and draw them.

Like the other outputs, each alphanumerical character should be completed in a single stroke, following the measures for letter gaps as directed and manually executed.

In contrast to the previous output, we had to physically draw geometric figures with only a ruler and a compass and write words and letters to practice freehand.

PL 300

We were given more complicated geometric forms to draw for this plate to understand geometric concepts better. On the other hand, each letter and number shall be filled in a single stroke, as ordered and manually accomplished by the measures for letter gaps.

We had to sketch geometric figures with only a ruler and a compass, then write words and letters freehand, much like in PL200.

PL 400

This plate was assigned to us to learn how to construct the three planes of projection on basic forms. Each letter and number should be filled in a single stroke, following the letter-spacing measures as indicated and manually done, much like the preceding plates.

However, our instructor told us to use our T-square and triangles to make the different projections in this plate.

We were given this plate to grasp a better undersatanding on how to build the three planes of projection on basic forms. Like the earlier plates, each letter and number should be completed in a single stroke, respecting the letter-spacing guidelines as given and manually completed.

Our instructor instructed us to utilize our T-square and triangles to build the various projections in this plate, just like in PL400.

PL 500

PL 6

We were given this plate to create four axonometric drawings using the three projection planes on a basic form. Like the preceding plates, each letter and number should be filled in a single stroke, following the letter-spacing measures given and manually completed.

Our instructor instructed us to utilize our T-square and triangles to build the various projections in this plate, similar to PL500.
