Philanthropy: Igniting the Spark of Innovation

Our foundation’s mission has always been rooted in the spirit of giving and the belief that philanthropy is the catalyst for transformational innovation. Local communities play a vital role in igniting this spark which encourages positive change in communities we love.

Philanthropy, at its core, is a testament to love one another. When we invest to support vital causes, we have the power to inspire groundbreaking solutions and bring about lasting change. Outcomes are rarely instantaneous and require perseverance for the long run.

Through unwavering support and generosity, Community Foundation of Henderson County addresses critical issues, supports innovative programs, and builds a better future for all.

As we chart our path forward, we recognize that the spark of innovation lies within each and every one of us. It is the collaborative spirit of our donors, volunteers, and nonprofit partners that fuels this fire, propelling us towards a more equitable, compassionate, and innovative community.

Looking back at the past year, the impact of our collective efforts is evident in the scholarships awarded, the grants provided to vital organizations, and continuing support for programs and non-profit organizations, even in volatile economic times. [numbers and figures]

In the years to come, we remain committed to nurturing this spark of innovation, fostering an environment where new ideas are welcomed, and bold solutions are embraced. Together, we will continue to lead with compassion, courage, and a shared vision of creating a brighter future for all in Henderson County.

To each and every one of you, we extend our deepest gratitude for your unwavering support, boundless dedication, and profound belief in the power of philanthropy. Together, as a community for good, we will ignite lasting change. Forever caring. Forever giving.

RICHARD C. AND VINA L. SAUER CHARITABLE LEADERSHIPS AWARD

The Richard C. and Vina L. Sauer Charitable Leadership Award celebrates the profound impact of local philanthropists who have dedicated themselves to enhancing our community through exceptional leadership and personal philanthropic endeavors.

The legacy of this award pays homage to a husband and wife, Richard C. and Vina L. Sauer, who extended their generosity to numerous local charities that nurtured our community. Their philanthropic journey did not conclude there; they furthered their commitment by bestowing Community Foundation of Henderson County with its first unrestricted endowment of $1 million.

Daniel C. & Nancy F. Barber, III

Dan and Nancy’s intertwined journey traces back to Dan’s days in the Army stationed in Germany. Nancy, hailing from Savannah, crossed paths with Dan at the officer’s club while visiting mutual friends. Their union forged a partnership founded on shared values of family, community, and an innate inclination towards generosity. Whether coaching sports, teaching Sunday school, or actively participating in Hendersonville High School, philanthropy has remained a defining facet of their relationship.

Across numerous decades, the Barber family has stood as an unwavering cornerstone within the Henderson County community. An enduring testament to this legacy is Dan Barber II, the father of Dan, who launched the iconic Western Auto establishment on Main Street, an emblematic presence that stood resolute for an astounding span of 59 years.

Following his college tenure in Florida and a period as an Army Lieutenant, Dan returned to his native Henderson County roots to steward the family business. His connection to Henderson County’s heritage is palpable, imbued with memories of yesteryears and an abiding affection for its idyllic small-town ambiance.

For Nancy, the concept of philanthropy resonates profoundly with family. “During Christmas, Dan would take our children to visit some of our Western Auto patrons,” Nancy fondly reminisces. “They would carry groceries and toys for the children, harmonizing carols as they spread cheer. Now, as adults, our children continue to pay it forward, and they impart this legacy of giving to our grandchildren.”

The charitable mission of Dan and Nancy is interwoven with local organizations that played an affirmative role in shaping Dan’s formative years. Their dedication has manifested in the form of two scholarship funds for the students of Hendersonville High School: the Dan Barber Western Auto Scholarship and the Awakening Scholarship.

In tandem with their scholarship initiatives, Dan and Nancy extend their generosity towards Boy Scout Troop 601—the same troop that once granted Dan the honor of Eagle Scout during his adolescent years. While many of their causes find roots in Dan’s historical rapport with Hendersonville, Nancy is as passionate about giving back to the individuals and institutions that support the community.

Throughout their life journey, the Barbers have been industrious, committed champions of progress and communal betterment.

Sparking Connections

IGNITE A PATH TO HEALING

Amidst the growing demands of mental health support and the persistence of trauma’s haunting echoes, individuals often find themselves retreating into emotional seclusion, seemingly beyond reclamation. Within the priorities outlined by the Henderson County Community Health Assessment, the urgency of addressing mental health needs is a top priority.

Through a grant awarded by Community Foundation of Henderson County, an innovative collaboration has emerged. Heart of Horse Sense, Veterans’ Healing Farm, and True Ridge are able to introduce equine-assisted therapy to Henderson County residents. Shannon Knapp, Executive Director of Horse Sense, said, “Our partnership with Veterans Healing Farm and Tru-Ridge gives us the ability to reach more veterans, in particular, allowing us to offer alternative therapeutic programming in Henderson County and connect survivors to something that matters.”The aim is to facilitate mental and emotional recovery, enabling clients to reintegrate into their families and communities with newfound fulfillment. This grant adds to the therapeutic tapestry of the community by prioritizing mental and emotional well-being.

“Equine Therapy is not a silver bullet; however, when done thoughtfully and intentionally, we can make a big difference in a short amount of time,” says Shannon Knapp, Executive Director

Heart of Horse Sense.

The therapeutic approach employs a team comprising a mental health professional, an equine specialist, and a compassionate rescue horse. Clients cultivate a profound rapport with these non-threatening and often develop moving relationships with the horse. The perceptive horses provide unfiltered feedback on behaviors and coping mechanisms, while also offering tactile experiences that nurture self-control and healing attachment wounds. This methodology, extending its reach beyond conventional therapy, resonates across diverse demographics. “I have been coming to this program for 6 years and it has helped me with PTSD, releasing old feelings that no longer served me, and having more confidence. I have learned to reconnect with humans because I learned how to connect with the horses first”. -Deb

“This is a di erent kind of healing, it hits you in your heart space”. –Cari

Perry N. Rudnick Endowment Fund Grants

The Perry N. Rudnick Endowment Fund Grants are a testament to the philanthropic legacy of Perry N. Rudnick. Despite being a city dweller by background, he seamlessly transitioned to mountain life, embracing hiking and becoming an enthusiastic advocate for trail preservation.

In 2000, Perry N. Rudnick passed away, leaving behind a lasting impact on the community. Prior to his passing, he established a private foundation, which merged with the Community Foundation, resulting in the creation of a substantial advised endowment of $6.2 million.

To honor Rudnick’s philanthropic vision, the Perry N. Rudnick Endowment Fund Advisory Committee convenes semi-annually to assess letters of intent and comprehensive proposals. This meticulous review process ensures that grants awarded from the Rudnick Endowment Fund align closely with Rudnick’s values and contribute positively to the community he cared deeply about.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Since our inception in 1982, we’ve grown from managing two scholarships to overseeing 125 Scholarship Endowment Funds today. These funds, established by individuals, families, and organizations

Community Foundation manages the selection and award process, empowering students with scholarships ranging from $500 to $8,000 awarded per year. Over the last 4 decades, over $7 million to 2,000+ students has been awarded. Thanks to generous donors who help lighten students’ financial burdens and enable them to thrive academically.

This year, over $550,000 in scholarship awards supported 250+ recipients for the 2023-2024 academic year. Through Scholarship Endowment Funds, we transform education into opportunity, igniting potential for students, families, and communities alike.

Donor’s generosity and belief that investing in education is an investment in a brighter future.

Spark of Empowerment

JOURNEY OF RESILIENCE

The Scholarship Endowment Funds, nurtured by compassionate donors and organizations, ignite the educational paths of hopeful students. Joreeca Dinnall embodies this commitment to student empowerment. Awarded multiple scholarships by CFHC, she advances her passion for criminal justice studies at Western Carolina University while also serving as a dedicated School Resource Officer at Hendersonville High School, spreading guidance and positivity throughout her community.

Joreeca’s journey is defined by unyielding determination amid life’s challenges. Early hardships included financial instability and displacement due to her father’s deportation to Jamaica. Still, she found solace in the support of the Henderson County Boys and Girls Club.

In 2018, she achieved a milestone, graduating with an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from Blue Ridge Community College. Though financial constraints briefly stalled her education, her resolve remained firm. In 2019,

she became a Police Officer with the Hendersonville Police Department, aiming to protect, serve, and inspire her community.

The trials of 2020 tested her commitment, yet Joreeca’s dedication prevailed. She mentored youth by enforcing laws, assisting with homework, and fostering positive change through events. Her story reflects her faith and resilience, a testament to the power of self-belief.

With the support of organizations like Community Foundation of Henderson County and the Boys and Girls Club, Joreeca’s educational dream thrived. Scholarships, including those from CFHC, propelled her to Western Carolina University, where she earned a spot on the 2023 Spring Dean’s List.

Beyond academics, Joreeca authored “Meet Officer Dinnall” in 2022, sharing her journey and the influence of the Boys and Girls Club. As a School Resource Officer, she remains a guiding light for the next generation, proving that change is achievable even in adversity. Add quotes from Joreeca

Fund Index

Unrestricted Endowment Funds allow Community Foundation of Henderson County to award grants to meet emerging needs in the community. These funds are the primary source of funding for the Foundation’s open-application grantmaking program, providing charitable capital for future use in ways that may not be conceptualized today.

Field of Interest Endowment Funds allow donors to target their gifts to address needs in an area important to them such as the environment, arts, education, and more. Donors can set up their own Field of Interest Endowment or contribute to an existing one.

Donor Advised Funds: Endowed and Non-Endowed allow donors to take an active role in philanthropy by making their own grant recommendations. Endowed funds give permanence to a donor’s charitable giving while generating an annual spendable amount. Non-Endowed funds give donors the most flexibility in their giving, allowing all funds to be accessible at all times. Donors who wish to be actively engaged in their giving enjoy utilizing Donor Advised Funds. Community Foundation staff works closely with the donor to ensure they are fully informed about nonprofit organizations or charities within our area as well as perform due diligence to confirm the viability of organizations.

Scholarship Funds are permanently endowed funds that offer financial assistance to students who strive to reach their academic dreams. Scholarship criteria can be customized to specify an area of study, a particular school, extracurricular achievement, or another condition important to the donor.

Designated Funds: Endowed and Non-Endowed allow donors to provide permanent ongoing support to one or more specific nonprofitsor charities.

Bequests allow individuals to make future gifts to the foundation so that the charitable causes they are most passionate about are continually supported. Bequests are philanthropic promises to be carried out after the donor’s death, typically made through a will or other planned giving vehicle.

Organizational Funds: Endowed and Non-Endowed are established by nonprofit organizations to carry out their charitable work and mission. Friends and supporters of these nonprofits may contribute to these funds at any time.

Charitable Gift Annuities, or CGAs, allow individuals to transfer cash or marketable securities to the Foundation in exchange for a current income tax deduction and fixed annual payments for life. Annuity payments begin immediately or can be deferred to a later date specified by the donor. People who wish to set up CGAs realize immediate income tax deductions for their gifts.

Charitable Remainder Trusts, or CRTs, pay individuals or their beneficiary regular income payments for life or a specified trust term. Upon the death of the trust’s income beneficiaries, or at the end of the specified years, the remainder of the trust transfers to Community Foundation to support the donor’s charitable giving goals. It’s an opportunity for donors to retain lifetime income, receive a current income tax deduction, and defer the capital gains recognized on the sale of the contributed asset.

The Administrative Fund of Community Foundation was established by the Board of Directors to give donors an opportunity to provide support for the ongoing services of Community Foundation, enabling the Foundation to charge minimal fees for expenses incurred while carrying out donors’ wishes.

Sparking Unity

JACKSON PARK’S ALL-INCLUSIVE PLAYGROUND

The project emerged from community concerns about accessible and safe playgrounds, leading to a collaboration between Henderson County Parks and Recreation and Special Needs Sports Inc. This partnership, joined by the Elks Lodge, Community Foundation of Henderson County, and various community members, businesses, and private donors successfully raised funds for an all-inclusive playground. Community Foundation of Henderson County awarded a $50,000 grant to help support the project.

Nestled in the heart of Jackson Park, this playground will rise above physical barriers, welcoming children and adults of all abilities to learn, play, and grow harmoniously. This project serves as a testament to how philanthropy, kindling the spark of innovation, can lead to enduring and positive change. It’s a reminder that when a community works together for a common purpose, powerful transformations can unfold, shaping a brighter future for all.

Sparking Hope

KENMURE FIGHTS CANCER’S COMMUNITY IMPACT

Kenmure Fights Cancer is a community-driven initiative in Henderson County, dedicated to battling cancer and instilling hope in the lives of those affected. Formed in 2007, this initiative has evolved into a powerful force for good, mobilizing residents through impactful fundraisers and heartfelt support.

Joanne Jones, the founder, began this initiative in 2002, but the official organization started in 2007. This effort to help others has grown into a source of hope, gathering an impressive $846,079.75 in donations since 2008.

Central to their efforts is the Kenmure Fights Cancer Fund, a component of Community Foundation of Henderson County (CFHC). CFHC enables Kenmure Fights Cancer to streamline operations and maximize the benefits of a 501(c) (3) corporation, relieving the initiative of tax-related paperwork while allowing them to allocate grants using donations made through the CFHC by generous donors.

Through a variety of events, including golf tournaments and virtual campaigns, Kenmure Fights Cancer embraces creativity and unity to raise funds. The “March to a Million” initiative

exemplifies their determination to surpass $1 million in total donations, signifying a community’s unwavering commitment to the cause.

Over the years, Kenmure Fights Cancer has left a permanent mark. From cutting-edge technologies like the LOCalizer wirefree guidance system to comforting amenities like heated infusion recliners, their contributions touch every aspect of cancer care.

In 2023, their focus is on elevating cancer care at the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Pardee Hospital and AdventHealth Hendersonville Cancer Services. By channeling funds into cutting-edge medical equipment the initiative ensures that patients receive the best possible care and treatments.

Kenmure Fights Cancer legacy is etched in the lives they’ve transformed, the equipment they’ve provided, and the hope they’ve ignited. As they march toward their million-dollar goal, their spirit remains unyielding, offering solace, strength, and support to all those affected by cancer.

DECIDE WHAT TO GIVE

Contribute cash, stock or other assets to create your fund. The Community Foundation offers a variety of giving options to meet your circumstances.

CONSIDER WHEN TO GIVE

Would you like to begin your charitable giving now? Or would you like to defer your gift through a will or planned gift? We can help you do either or both.

CREATE YOUR GIFT

After talking with Community Foundation staff, you’ll be ready to pick a type of fund to establish. You'll then begin a fund agreement to name the fund, appoint advisors and outline your charitable intentions. You may also work with your financial advisor to create an estate or future gift.

GET READY TO GIVE

We’ll help you transfer your tax-deductible gift and then you’ll be able to start making an impact with your giving. You can recommend grants to your favorite charities, invest alongside us through funding partnerships, or support causes important to you beyond your lifetime.

It reflects your aspirations and values. It expresses your humanity and your empathy. It benefits your health, your heart, and your soul.
