From the day the doors of the Dempsey Center opened in 2008, our mission has been to make life better for people impacted by cancer While our footprint has expanded both physically and digitally and our services have multiplied, we continue to provide services that bring compassion, connection, and choice to patients, survivors, care partners, family, and friends.
In 2025, our footprint is expanding again! We are thrilled to share that our South Portland location is relocating to the Rock Row Health Campus in Westbrook. The expanded space will allow more clients to access services both in-person and virtually. Services will continue to be offered in Lewiston and our hope is that the move will only briefly affect services offered in South Portland. Please enter the building via the catwalk on the second floor. The Dempsey Center is located on the fourth floor.
As we prepare to move our South Portland operations to Rock Row in Westbrook, we hope that it will cause little to no disruption to the client experience. We appreciate everyone’s patience with us and understanding as we clean, pack, and reopen in our new space. We currently expect our South Portland office to close at end of business day on Thursday, February 6th. Programs will then move to Rock Row with a staggered reopening. Most in-person programs will resume the weeks of February 17th and 24th. Please review any in-person programs you have signed up for to confirm the program ’ s location. Exercise can help fight fatigue, boost your energy level, support your immune system, relieve stress and tension, make your muscles and heart stronger, improve balance and help you sleep better. This 45minute class will provide you with all the fundamentals of an exercise program, adapting it to meet the needs of varying levels of fitness with a warm-up, aerobic activity, core and strength training exercises, and finishing with a cooldown/stretch. Please wear comfortable clothes and supportive shoes or sneakers and have a sturdy chair available on a non-skid surface and small handheld weights.

For clients who experience hair loss during the course of their treatment, donated and restored wigs and headwear options are available at no cost to Dempsey Center Clients. Experience the harmonious fusion of restorative yoga and massage. You will be guided into a variety of supported yoga postures, and while you relax into the poses you will receive gentle hand, foot, back and neck massage from a member of our massage team. This unique combination offers a chance for profound relaxation, comfort, and rejuvenation. No prior experience with yoga or massage is necessary. Modifications can be made for clients who find it challenging to transition from floor to standing

REIKI
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation, and it is a gentle therapy intended to relieve stress and discomfort. During a session, the client remains fully clothed and typically lies down on a heated bed. The Reiki practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above the person receiving the treatment
ONCOLOGY MASSAGE
Provided by licensed massage therapists, these specialized oncology sessions help alleviate common symptoms and side effects of cancer. Clients can choose to remain fully clothed or have the option to remove any clothing according to their comfort level.
ACUPUNCTURE
Offered in a communitystyle setting, acupuncture provides numerous benefits to cancer patients and survivors, including pain alleviation, stress management, and overall wellness promotion. Clients receive treatment in zero gravity chairs and are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing.

Meeting people where they are at on their cancer journey is a main pillar of our mission here at the Dempsey Center. And we know that the side effects you may be experiencing aren’t on a schedule--what you feel today may be different from how you feel tomorrow.
To meet these needs and give you more flexibility in accessing the support you need, we have expanded our virtual services to include on-demand informational sessions, educational workshops, movement + fitness classes, nutrition demonstrations and education, and more! You can now access dozens of offerings from anywhere, at any time, and on your own pace.
Some of these classes include “All About Wigs,” “Introduction to Grief and Bereavement,” “What to Eat During Cancer Treatment,” “What Now? Finding Your Way after Cancer Treatment,” “Yoga for Cancer Care,” and “About the Dempsey Dogs.” Each of these classes are available to active clients after setting up your account through our on-demand portal. As our team continues to monitor the needs of our clients and the demand for specific offerings, the number of classes available will continue to grow. Currently, new classes are being added monthly!

For patients and care partners who have to travel 30+ miles to receive treatment, the doors of Clayton's House are open to you. Clayton's House is a short distance from Maine Medical Center, Northern Light Health Locations, and New England Cancer Specialists, making it easy to access your treatment appointments.
At Clayton’s House, we are dedicated to providing a home away from home an oasis of comfort and solace for those impacted by cancer. Located in Portland’s picturesque East End, Clayton’s House is a place where cancer patients, their care partners, and loved ones can stay at no cost while receiving or traveling for cancer treatment.
Amenities include: four bedrooms, fully-stocked pantry and open kitchen, free-to-use laundry, outdoor seating + gardens, access to on-site and virtual Dempsey Center programs (at our South Portland office) and so much more.

CANCELLATIONS FOR APPOINTMENTS
For anyone impacted by cancer, there may be circumstances that arise requiring a cancellation of an upcoming appointment at the Dempsey Center Should this occur, please provide at least a 24-hour notice of your cancellation, if at all possible.
CANCELLATIONS FOR SERIES, WORKSHOPS, AND SUPPORT GROUPS
The Dempsey Center is proud to offer numerous services at no-cost to our clients. Many of our classes and workshops fill quickly, creating waitlists for interested parties. We understand that there are many circumstances that may arise causing the inability to attend a registered class for any of our clients In order to ensure that our classes are open and available to everyone, we ask that you please provide at least a 24-hour notice should you be unable to attend, if at all possible.
As many of our classes fill quickly, if two sessions or classes are missed in a row without a notice to the Dempsey Center team, you will be removed from the registration roster You can resubmit registration at any time, but please be aware that you may be placed on a wait list.
WAITLIST POLICIES
If you are trying to get into a full series, workshop, or support group, you will be placed on a waitlist to attend When a spot opens up, we will move through the waitlist in the order in which names are added.
If you are selected to be moved off the waitlist, you will receive a phone call or email notifying you. You will have 48 hours to respond to the notification, confirming your enrollment. If we don't hear from you, we will contact you again and you will then have another 24 hours to respond If you do not respond after that time, we will consider you unable to attend and will continue to move through our list.
