As our proud nation approaches its fiftieth anniversary the DLP believes it will be useful to present to the public a retrospective on the growth of the Barbados economy over the years.The performance of the Barbados economy has been an especially hot topic for discussion in the wake of the global economic crisis of 2007/2008 and its aftermath. The following table provides a quick summary of growth of the Barbados economy conveniently grouped into decades, starting from 1961. The World Bank provides a continuous series of the growth rate in Real GDP from 1961 and that data forms the basis of our retrospective. The data suggests that over the period 1961 to 2014 the Barbados economy more than doubled in size, growing by 134%. Of that growth, 80% has happened under DLP administrations and 54% under BKLP administrations. The average annual growth rate in real GDP for the economy over the period has been 2.49%. averaging 2.67% a year under DLP governments and 2.26% under BLP governments. Both parties have made a major contribution to the development of this country. The data suggests that under the DLP and father of the nation, Errol Barrow, Barbados experienced rapid modernization and outstanding growth in the 1961 to 1970 period as we transitioned from a sugar economy to a modern economy led by tourism. The economy then slowed in the 1970s, likely due to the first oil shock, but then more structurally through the maturing of the tourist industry, the decline in manufacturing, and further external shocks. From since 1980s onwards the economy has not achieved especially high levels of growth, averaging less than 2% a year if one takes a decade long perspective, but growth has been steady and stable. Given all the punditry and comments we hear and read today, it might be surprising to some that during 2001 to 2007 the average growth rate was 1.84% when there was no global economic crisis.

If one were to take a sober look the information suggests that during the most recent period, 2008-2014, the growth rate in real gdp across caricom was negative except for the natural resource based economies. We are seeking to reduce the vulnerability to external shocks by builing out an alternative energy sector, significantly boosting agriculture and turing resoucres such as waste into valuable economic resocures as we aim to build a just society.
