POLEMARCH’S PODIUM

Greetings Brothers of Washington Alumni!

Welcome to another edition of The Flagship Newsletter! It is the pleasure of the 48th Administration to bring to the chapter all the great things that have been going on since the last edition and to let you know what will be coming in the very near future. At our February chapter meeting, we hosted our very own, Grand Board Member (Alumni) Robert L. Jenkins, Jr., Esq. Province Polemarch Charles Exum, 26th Eastern Province Polemarch Neil Hudgins and Baltimore Alumni Chapter Polemarch Craig Simms highlight the many dignitaries that were in attendance. The chapter enthusiastically voted to support Brother Grand Board Member Jenkins’ candidacy for Senior Grand Vice Polemarch and is committed to doing everything it can to make sure he is successful in this endeavor. Washington (DC) Alumni welcomed five new brothers at the March chapter meeting as they successfully went through our Membership Training Academy and were duly initiated into Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Chairman Brother Dr. Eric Bradshaw and the MTA Committee led our new brothers to Kappaland and the line has already made immediate contributions.

LEGACY, LEGACY, LEGACY

OnSunday, March 12, 2023, Brother Kenneth Brewer, Sr. welcomed his son, Kenneth Brewer, Jr. into our noble clan by pinning him. This simple, yet profound act is a long tradition that dates back to the 12th century when knights were pinned. To be “pinned”, one has checked all the requirements signifying their membership. And to be pinned by your legacy makes it special by both parties. When asked about being pinned, Brother Brewer Jr. stated “It’s been an honor. I’ve been waiting on it my whole life. I continue to see why my Pops loves it so much.”

A “legacy” can be defined as a man whose father, grandfather, uncle or brother was initiated into a chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Our fraternity holds the distinction of being one of two organizations in the National Pan Hellenic Council that does not participate in honorary memberships. The other organization being Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Moreover, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated holds the distinction of being the only organization of the Divine 9 to never actually bestow an honorary membership on any man. To become a member of our clan, one must apply to be one. We hold this distinction due to Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. simply giving away memberships in the past. Notably, the former Vice President of the United States, Hubert Humphrey, was given an honorary membership in 1965. Go Figure.

However, just because a “legacy” applies to our membership does not grant them automatic membership into our fraternity. Many have tried, and many have failed. Some will argue, that applying as a “legacy” actually makes things more difficult for the aspirant. When and if the “legacy” crosses into our burning sands, he will have the opportunity to continue that path of achieving in every field of human endeavor. James A. Byrd was so inspired by his step father’s role in our fraternity, he too could not wait to be a member. His step father was the Dreamer himself, Elder Watson Diggs, whom did not have children biologically. Henry Bennett, Jr wanted to be like his pops so badly that shortly after he crossed into our frat in 1967, he became the youngest brother to purchase a life membership. Henry Bennett, Sr. is Life Member #39, while his namesake became Life Member #47.

Legacies remain an important aspect in our fraternity as they are usually an awesome representation of the achievement they observed on a daily basis.

PROFILES IN EDUCATION

The field of Education and the Washington Alumni Chapter go hand and hand since the beginning. So much so, the chapter elected a well-known, accomplished educator, Robert Thompson, a Charter Member, as its first Polemarch. Polemarch Thompson served as our first chapter Polemarch from 1924-1926, during that time and afterwards he taught various academic subjects. His most notable teaching stint was over a decade at Phelps High School beginning in 1941. Fellow Charter member, Brother Maurice Clifford taught at Armstong Manuel Training School for a number of years. Our brother, Paul Cooke, Ed.D, once said, “Education is a powerful weapon that includes both the teaching and learning of knowledge, appropriate conduct, and technical and procedural competency…As a lifelong educator in the District of Columbia, I can think of no greater privilege or responsibility than teaching.”

From our first Polemarch to our beloved Brother Dr. Cooke, we have been truly blessed to have so many accomplished educators as our chapter brothers. Education is the cornerstone of our fraternity’s motto, Achievement. One cannot properly achieve without education. Today, we have our chapter brothers achieving a great deal as leaders in the field. Brother Dr. Rodney Henderson is the Executive Director over instructional leadership in which he mentors teachers on how to properly teach our youth in the Baltimore City Public School System. Brother Ronald A. Miller “RAM” is the principal of Chesapeake Math & IT Academy South Elementary (CMIT). CMIT specializes in technology-integrated education for grades K-5 with an emphasis on math, science, and information technologies. Brother Dr. Jeffrey Grant is the head of Monument Academy Public Charter School, the only middle school in DC that offers boarding for at-risk youth. Brother Abdullah Zaki II, an administrator with KIPP Schools, has won numerous awards in education, including “Principal of the Year” during his tenure at Kelly Miller Middle School.

A PROFILE IN HISTORY: BETA KAPPA CHAPTER

OnFebruary 21, 1940, at what was known as Miner Teachers College, the Beta Kappa of Kappa Alpha Psi was chartered. This was a monumental occasion as there had been much resistance to chartering a chapter at Miner Teachers College. The Charter Members of the Beta Kappa of Kappa Alpha Psi were Roland Edward Barnes, Herbert A. Curly Boyd, Wallace Xavier Conway, Wilbur A. Millard, Norman W. Nickens, Walter A. Patterson, Frederick Smith, Kenneth Sweeny. Paul P. Cooke (Xi, 1935), Samuel “Buck” Covington (Xi 1939), and James “Skinny”Mack (Xi 1938) were the Alumni Organizers and were initiates of Xi and members of the Washington (DC) Alumni Chapter (E). The 1991 History of the Eastern Province documents that Brother Cooke matriculated at Miner Teachers College, but it was silent on the other Alumni Organizers of Beta Kappa. However, a careful review of historical archives reveals that all the Alumni organizers matriculated at Miner Teachers College and in the case of Cooke and Mack, were

close friends. Brother Mack’s autobiography, My Life, My Country, My World mentions that Brother Cooke served as the Best Man in his wedding.

Brother Samuel Covington graduated from Miner Teachers College and had a distinguished career as a basket-

in 1940. He returned to college in 1953 and became a Foreign Service Officer. Brother Cooke was a forward on the Miner Teachers College basketball team and graduated in 1937 and went on to earn Master of Arts degree in Education in 1941 from New York University, a Master of Arts degree in English Literature in 1943 from the Catholic University of America, and a Doctorate in Education in 1947 from Columbia University. He served as a Professor of English at DC Teachers College from 1944 to 1974 and became the college’s president in 1966 and served in that capacity until 1974.

ball coach and teacher in DC public schools. Brother James Mack was a distinguished basketball player for Miner Teachers College but left college for employment

BETA KAPPA 83RD CHARTER DAY CELEBRATION

For this year, the Brothers of the Beta Kappa Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. did not have to settle for commemorating their 83rd anniversary on a non-anniversary date. Eighty-three years ago to the date, Beta Kappa was birthed on the campus of Miner Teachers College now known as the University of the District of Columbia on February 21, 1940. The four founders of Beta Kappa were members of the Xi chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc which included Paul P. Cooke, James L. Mack, Samuel "Buck" Covington, Jr. and Joseph P. Logan. The celebration was held in the campuses new student center that accommodated, Kappa men and others. A 4-piece jazz ensemble provided music as a prelude to the program’s agenda. Some of the program participants were Brother Nat Davis ‘88, Brother Jamil Milan 2K22, Brother David Hardrick ‘77, Brother Samuel McCoy ‘56 myself (Tony Harris ‘90) and others. At the close of the program, various conversations filled the room of fond memories and old friendships. As always, we closed out the evening with Kappa songs and revealed 63 brothers from Beta Kappa, Kappa Chi, Washington (DC) Alumni and other various chapters.

Interestingly, an archive picture of the Beta Kappa in 1950 in the school’s archives list the James Mack, SamuelCovington, George A.Campbell, Joseph Logan, and Paul Cooke asthe Chapter’s “Founders” and lists the charter members as Roland E. Barnes, Herbert A. Boyd, Wallace X. Conway, Guy O. Knorl, Wilbur A. Millard, Norman W. Nickens, Frederick A. Smith, Kenneth S. Sweeney, and Walter Patterson. The listing of Guy O. Knorl appears to be in error as he was not initiated until December 1940. Records further indicate that Joseph Logan, a renowned mathematician, and scientist, attended Miner Teachers College and was initiated into the Xi in 1938.

CELEBRATING THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF OUR TWELVE GRADUATING KAPPA LEAGUERS

HEALTH & Wellness

OnSunday, April 30, our Health & Wellness Committee joined forces with the sisters of the Federal City Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. The afternoon consisted of planks, push-ups, stretching, sprints, burpees, and much more! The intense group exercise was led by personal trainers from both respective organizations: our Brother David Clary and Sister Xiomara Troutman. The trainers also provided great nutritional knowledge so that the attendees can handle business in the kitchen. The fellowship was such a success, both organizations vowed that this is just the beginning!

Wecould not be prouder of the 12 young men who have participated in our Guide Right program, some of whom have been with us since sixth grade. Not only have these distinguished young men maintained a strong academic standing at their respective schools, they have also exhibited leadership, partnership, responsibility, civility and have been shining examples of how we hope young Black men can be.

As for our current Kappa Leaguers, our young men recently represented WAC at the National Debate Competition on May 7th and performed brilliantly. We salute these young men, and encourage them to keep up the hard work.

Senior Kappa Breakfast

CONTRIBUTING WRITER: BROTHER CHARLES HOWARD

OnWednesday, May 22, 2023, the doors of the Tastee Diner were closed forever. Some longtime customers, including our Senior Kappa brothers, learned about the abrupt closing via Facebook. While other customers learned of the diner’s closing from a posted note on the front door that read, “Thank you for the opportunity of letting us serve you for so many years.” There was initially no specific reason given as to why the restaurant closed. The history of the Senior Kappa Breakfast is quite a unique one. The organized breakfast has been around for almost 40 years. During the 1980s, various Senior Kappa brothers began meeting for monthly breakfast. They would gather at various restaurants in DC and throughout the metropolitan area. Breakfast was open to anyone who wanted to join the group. Brothers were welcome, whether or not they had any ability to pay. Brothers Terry Brooks Sr. and Jesse Morton were the breakfast leaders and encouraged attendance. In fact, Brother Morton once told the group that his birthday was coming up but he did not want a party. Instead he paid for everyone’s breakfast. That started a tradition, strictly voluntary, that when it was your birthday month, you paid for the entire breakfast. While not required for participation, some brothers have continued this tradition. Brothers Donald Humphries and Charles Howard coordinate breakfast notifications to get the word out. Several brothers make an effort to provide transportation for those who do not drive. But since there is no more Tastee Diner, where do the brothers go to fellowship and eat? Our chapter brothers took matters in their own hands and did the research. The following requirements had to be met: scrumptious breakfast menu, a central location with adequate parking, and great service. On the morning of March 30, 2023, Brothers Rick Toye and Tom Henderson met with Dan Gurewitz, owner of the Parkway Deli, about possibly having the historic deli as the new location for the Senior Kappa Breakfast. The deli checked all of the boxes: a large private meeting room, free parking lot, and a deck to enjoy meals outside if the weather permits. All parties agreed. And so on Tuesday, April 4th, 2023, our Senior Kappa Brothers enjoyed their first breakfast at its new location at the historic Parkway Deli, 8317 Grubb Road, Silver Spring, Maryland.

Brothers All, the Monthly Senior Kappa breakfast will continue to meet on the first Tuesday of every month at 9:00 am. Our senior brothers would love to see you there.

black party 2023

• After three long years of not partying in person, our signature event, the 11th Annual Black Party was back and better than ever! This year’s theme was Black Resistance: A Celebration of Strength, Resilience, and the Continued Push for Equity. The Black Party Committee honored Civil Rights Activist, Pastor Willie F. Wilson, who spoke on the history of Black Resistance in America. Pastor Wilson was thoughtfully introduced by our Master of Ceremonies, Brother Marques Smith. The stylish party attendees grooved to the Go-Go/R&B fusion sounds of DC’s own, Future Band. Between the sets of the band, the upstairs guests were entertained by Bing the DJ while the basement was held down by Brother Nick Sneed, also known as DJ eleKTRK.

Brother Richard White took home the biggest prize ever…the Polemarch’s Basket. The Polemarch’s Basket is the ultimate gift set that includes a contribution from each of our Past Polemarchs. There’s nothing like our Annual Black Party; the event where one could hear an inspirational speech, dance to a live band, listen to a dope DJ, while eating a nice meal! “Ain’t no party like the Black Party, because the Black Party don’t stop!”
