DWDMCA Stormwater Facility Maintenance

DWDMCA has 47 Stormwater Facilities including about 6 miles of rock slope Stormwater Training Walls. It is essential and required by law that these stormwater facilities be properly maintained.

Maintenance includes vegetation removal in and directly around the facilities to ensure unobstructed stormwater flow and to prevent root damage to the structures. In addition, rip rap (rock) is placed in erosion scour holes for added protection. A side benefit of maintaining the rock slope Stormwater Training Walls is to provide access for future block wall view fence painting and protection from potential wildfires.

In 2022, we received clearance from the US Army Corp of Engineers to maintain these facilities under a Nationwide 404 (c) Permit and 401 Permit clearance from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality. The permit allows the maintenance described above in and around the facilities.

In 2022, maintenance was performed at the 9 most critical locations. This year (2023), maintenance was performed at the next 11 most critical locations including about 1,000’ of rock slope Stormwater Training Walls. In addition, the contractor (BrightView Construction) went back and performed preventative maintenance at the 9 locations from 2022. The preventative maintenance will be continuous. The stormwater maintenance cost each year was $15,000. Next year (2024), ILC will tackle the next most critical Stormwater Facilities, more rock slope Stormwater Training Walls and preventative maintenance at the 20 stormwater facilities maintained in 2022 and 2023.

Shown here are three examples showing before and after photos of stormwater facility maintenance. You can view the PowerPoint videos showing before and after photos of the all the stormwater facility maintenance in 2022 and 2023, respectively, via the links below:

Landscaping Before & After Early Observations of Landscape Maintenance with Complete Landscaping

Last year, Residents shared that there was a strong need to improve our landscape maintenance. In January 2023, Complete Landscaping, Inc took responsibility for our community’s landscape maintenance. Initially, there were several focus projects to "catch up" on some poorly maintained areas. Their work has now stabilized into a regular schedule of maintaining our common areas. The following "before & after" photos help demonstrate the initial impact of our new landscapers’ efforts.

What Attracts a Burglar to Your Home?

Dove Mountain and Del Webb are some of the safest areas in Pima County but nothing is perfect. As most people know upscale neighborhoods can attract crime because of the nicer things that we own, as well as the perception that “crime just doesn't happen here.” Most burglaries are crimes of opportunity. While many criminals will tell you that they look for things that can hide them like overgrown bushes, many of them simply walk through an open door. A recent poll even suggests that only 10% of homeowners arm their security system at night, so it just makes sense that if you have one to arm it before leaving or going to bed. Here are some things you can do to make an opportunistic burglar think twice about targeting your home.

• Make sure to lock your garage door and deadbolt the front and back doors, as well as any doggy doors and windows

• When you purchase expensive electronics, cut the boxes into smaller pieces before throwing them out

also keep an eye on your home when you are gone, just one of the parts of a Neighborhood Watch program! Knowing your neighbors is especially handy if someone attempts a “knock-knock” burglary.

Burglars often admit to casing homes, pretending to be a neighbor, survey-taker, service or utility worker, or a food delivery driver at the wrong house. Burglars might knock on your door to see if you are home, find out your work schedule, see if you have a pet, or just to peek at the property. This type of crime has become more prevalent in communities.

By being part of a Neighborhood Watch program, you will become more familiar with the people in your neighborhood and recognize this type of suspicious activity. Don't hesitate to pick up the phone and dial 911. Be prepared to give specific details about the people and vehicles your might have seen. Also letyour Block Captain know so that they can help keep the rest of the community informed.

Be aware and stay safe. And as always . . .

• When going out of town make sure your landscaping will be well maintained.

• Have a friend bring in any mail, newspapers, and packages while you're on vacation

• Never announce your vacation plans on social media and wait to post your pictures until your return home

• Make plans for your trash receptacles so they not left at the curb too long, since the empty cans might alert someone that you are not home

• Arm your alarm system if you have one. If you don't, consider getting one. Nowadays they are more affordable than ever. And don’t forget to make sure you have the alarm company signs posted in the front and the back yards.

• Get to know your neighbors! Not only will it be beneficial to recognize people in your neighborhood for safety purposes, but they can

Saguaro Center Art Gallery Wall Update

Article submission by Artists and Crafters Group

The Artists and Crafters interest group formed a small committee to work with Barbara Truman, our Infrastructure Committee and the Board in order to secure funding from the CARE fund for the metal hanging system on the wall leading into the gym. We chose a very versatile option that allows for the display of 2D and 3D arts and crafts produced by our numerous and very talented community artists. Our initial display went up last week and demonstrates the variety of display options available along with the variety of artisans we have in our community.

Our plan is to proceed with a 2-month cycle for displays starting in July. The current display is in place until the end of June. We have an application process in place to help us determine who is interested in displaying their work and the types of pieces they have available. Displays will feature 1-3 artists and/or crafters at a time. Committee members include: Alicia Schilder, isa.schilder@outlook.com, Sherrie Hohnke, ladybugs21852@gmail.com and Kathy Weaver, abqkathy@catsiii.com. Please contact one of us if you have any questions on this new feature in our community.

Slide a Patio Door

Are you spraying your forehands all over the court? You may be using a stroking motion that is too circular. If that’s the case, the slightest error in timing can cause the ball to fly off your racquet at an extreme angle.

You can improve your accuracy by swinging so that your racquet strings face the intended target area across the net for as long as possible before and through contact with the ball. Try laying back your hand and wrist slightly as you make your stroke –much as you would if you were sliding open a patio door.

You’ll find it much easier to keep your racquet head traveling along a straighter, truer path through contact with the ball. The result will be increased accuracy.

Have Weeds?

Article submission by Andrea Broadhead, Community Standards Coordinator

As a friendly reminder, the weeds are coming upon us fast. To keep the community looking the best, we ask that you check the front and sides of your homes for weeds. If you have not taken advantage of the special bulk rate weed prevention service from WeedCo and are interested in the program, it’s not too late. Contact them today to get on their service schedule. Let them know you live in Del Webb at Dove Mountain to receive the bulk rate discount ($50 for front yard service).

Healthy Bites

We are officially “springing” into a brand, new season here in Az. Great weather, beautiful skies, trees leafing out and oh yes, the blooming flowers that we love to see but our allergies say something else. Ok people, not a 100% perfect, but, I’ll take it. I always feel energized in spring and feel like it’s a new beginning. More outdoor time, cleaning out and organizing, pulling out my fresh food recipes and starting new projects or adventures. Life is too short for the negatives that our world is going through, so my wish for all of you is to find the goodness and positivity in each and every day. Have a gratitude list each day. I promise you, that your life will feel and more fulfilled.

With that being said, I am going to give you some tidbits to think about. These are not designed to be negative thoughts, but instead to get you all on board for wanting a healthier lifestyle. Stay with me, here we go:

1 out of 2 adults have heart disease

1 out of 3 adults have cancer

2 out of 3 adults are overweight or obese

1 out of 3 adults have type 2 diabetes

“If we continue to do what we have always done, we will continue to get what we have always gotten.”

“We live too short and die too long.” Dr. Myron Wentz “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”

Hippocrates

“If you don’t take care of your body, where are you going to live?” Unknown

“The greatest wealth is health.” Unknown And a funny one: “Never under any circumstances take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.” Dave Berry

Remember, these are just things to think about, but oh, so true! And now on to some easy, fresh and healthy, tasty salads for you to incorporate in your menus. Give these a try, I hope you enjoy them as much as we do.

Did you know that one in three students in Marana is food insecure? If families are struggling to provide meals, they are struggling to provide other necessities.

YES supporters are kindly asking for your help to reach their goal to provide 1,200 backpacks to our local Marana school children.

The smiles, relief and gratitude from last year are still fresh in the memories as all the families that received backpacks and supplies. They hope to help even more families this year with your help.

Please help us make a difference in the lives of our Marana public school children by picking up a donation form and/or a school supply list at the Saguaro Center or contact Del Webb YES member Mary Kroll at makroll@att.net.
