Faculty members at DelVal are truly engaged with students both inside and out of the classroom. In addition to advising you on your curriculum and degree path, you will have opportunities for exploration, research and networking as our faculty serve as mentors to our students.

Our average class size is 16 students, which allows for significant interaction between students and faculty.

FACULTY ADVISING AND MENTORING

You will be assigned a faculty member who will be your academic advisor at DelVal. This faculty member will guide you as you plan your major, consider possible minors and plan hands-on learning opportunities.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING: E360

DelVal was founded on the concept of “science with practice” and this concept has never been more relevant than it is today. You will explore your interests and get hands-on experience through DelVal’s award-winning E360 Program.

As a student at this school you won’t just be in a lecture hall, you’ll be out in the field that you choose to study.

HANDS-ON CLASSES

At DelVal, you don’t just learn about things, you actually do them. Depending on your major, you may find yourself doing hands-on activities like landscaping practices, soil composition, dairy science, or hydroponics. Or, you may be in a lab working with small animals, genetics, microbiology, marine chemistry, or in our state-of-the-art counseling psychology lab. Interested in business administration?

You will have hands-on activities such as business simulations and access to our Small Business and Entrepreneurship Center. As a media and communication student, you will learn graphic design, video production, podcasting and writing skills.

STUDENT RESEARCH

You will have the opportunity to work with a faculty member to design your own semester-long research project in your specific area of interest.

CHAIR OF PLANT SCIENCE AND LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE DEPARTMENT

Academic Interests: Sustainable agriculture, biodiversity, improving soil health

Student Involvement: Dr. Ricotta is a devoted formal and informal academic advisor to students of all majors in the Plant Science and Landscape Architecture Department. She loves taking field trips in her courses, and has taken students to an organic farm in Italy four times.

4DR. WILBERT (WIL) TURNER, JR.

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH

Academic Interests: Penal literature, dystopian literature, film adaptation, African American literature, American literature post Civil War

Student Involvement: Dr. Turner is the advisor for The Gleaner, our literary magazine. He helps our talented students explore their passions for writing, art and photography by giving them opportunities to publish work.

4DR. MEGAN TERRY-DEMAREST

CHAIR OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE DEPARTMENT

Academic Interests: Criminological theory, corrections and reentry, self-forgiveness in the aftermath of crime and in connection to desistance pathways

Student Involvement: Dr. Terry-Demarest is an advisor for Criminal Justice students. On a daily basis, she meets with students for advising, teaches courses, works on program development for the Criminal Justice Department, and collaborates with colleagues, community partners, and criminal justice stakeholders to increase student learning opportunities.

4DR. WILLIAM (BILL) FRITZ CHAIR OF ANIMAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

Academic Interests: Behavior, endocrinology, and reproduction in small ruminants (sheep and goats)

Student Involvement: Dr. Fritz mentors several students in undergraduate student research projects. He is the faculty advisor of Block and Bridle (Animal Science club) and advisor of The A-Day Student Planning Committee. He is also one of the coaches for the Northeast Student Affiliate (NESA) of the American Society of Animal Science and American Dairy Science Association Academic Competition team. He serves on the University’s Curriculum Committee and formerly served on the University’s Strategic Planning Committee.

Student Involvement: Professor Krout helps students understand the different aspects of working with animals. She also works with students to help them understand the correlation between research and their major.

E360 SPOTLIGHT: TERRAIN AT DELAWARE VALLEY UNIVERSITY

Terrain, a division of Urban Outfitters, Inc. (URBN), will open a garden center, restaurant, and event venue on DelVal’s campus in summer of 2023.

Our students will have the opportunity to gain real-world experience with a highly regarded company, and we know that the community is very excited.

Terrain at DelVal offers us a unique setting to showcase our agricultural products, collaborative culture, and our students’ work. We’re excited to help bring a selection of our homegrown goods from our farm to Terrain’s table. He plans to launch his own business and is preparing to present his work at DelVal’s Spark Bowl, a “Shark Tank”-like competition.

CAREER GOALS: Jordan plans to complete his MBA through DelVal’s 4 +1 Program, which allows students to gain a master’s in just one additional year of study.

4Leadership – Tutored students and helped with labs on campus.

4Career Exploration – Took a Marine Chemistry class in Bermuda where the ocean became her living laboratory.

4Study Abroad – Worked with veterinarians in Belize assisting with vaccinations for animals such as cattle, swine and horses.

CAREER GOALS: Alicia hopes to work in the education field, and do environmental, or wildlife education with middle school-aged children, or the public. She will be working for the nature camp at the Bucks County Audubon Society, and hopes to find a full- time educator position.

EXPERIENCES:

4Internship at Elmwood Park Zoo as a zoo keeper for freshman and sophomore year. Was then hired as a part-time employee his junior and senior year.

4Recipient of merit-based trustee scholarship.

CAREER GOALS:

Nicholas hopes to work full-time in an animal care position and has a special interest in working with primates.

4MADISON OSATCHUK ’23 BIOLOGY

HOMETOWN: Ashland, PA

EXPERIENCES:

4Research Madison conducted a student research project with Dr. Downs of the biology department. Together, they reviewed the comparative anatomical description of tristichopterid fossils from the Late Devonian Era. They created description for new species of Eusthenodon

4Leadership –Madison gained valuable leadership skills while serving as a Peer Mentor for two years. Within this role, she was responsible for supporting student mentees as they navigate their first year at DelVal. Mentors provide mentees with academic, social and personal support through assisting mentees with college transition challenges and resource referral. Madison is also a Rambassador co-captain.

CAREER GOALS:

Madison hopes to pursue veterinary medicine, particularly large animals. She plans to apply to vet schools as she enters her senior year.
