Betty L. Thompson

B

etty L Thompson is a long-time activist and former Missouri State representative and past director of the Kwame Foundation, which provides career assistance to young African-Americans. In addition, she also supports non-violence through her organization The Tyronne Thompson Institute of Non-Violence, a living testament to Betty Thompson’s son, Tyronne Thompson who was killed during an attempted robbery in 2010. She was raised in the public housing complexes of Carr Square village and Pruitt-Igoe. A 1958 graduate of Sumner High School, Rep. Thompson received a certificate of business from Hubbard’s Business College and a certificate of managerial management from Washington University. She also attended Harris Stowe College.

Thompson was first elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in a special election in 1997. She was also previously employed for six years in St. Louis County Government and worked for 26 years with the Human Development Corporation. Thompson is a member of the following organizations: the NAACP, Better Family Life, president of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Support Group, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission and past president of Women in Municipal Government. Thompson also served for 18 years on the University City Council. Thompson has also served as the 2000 Democratic Majority Whip while representing part of St. Louis County (District 72) in the Missouri House of Representatives. Among her many firsts are: First African American elected to Women in Government - an arm of the prestigious National League of Cities (1987); First African American female arrested in Washington, D.C. for protesting Apartheid in South Africa (1988); First-African American to serve on the cabinet of a St. Louis County Executive, Democrat Buzz Westfall (1991 );

First Democrat to be elected by the Republican Majority as Vice-chair of the Ethics Commission (2002) In recognition of a lifetime of achievements working and securing jobs for the youth, feeding the hungry, helping the elderly; motivating the youth and single moms, Thompson has received numerous awards. In 2006, she received the M. L. King Spirit Award from the University City School Board and City Council. In addition, Thompson received the following: Gwen Giles Award; Drum Major for Peace Award from the St. Louis Clergy Coalition; the Outstanding Legislative Mother of the Year Award from the late U.S. State Senator Jet Banks; the KMOX Radio and the Suburban Journal’s Women of Achievement Award; Riverfront Times’ Best of St. Louis - Politician of the Year; St. Louis PostDispatch Outstanding Women in Leadership; Ernest and DeVerne Lee Calloway Award; and the St. Louis M. L. King Leadership Award, Thompson is also the former Vice President of Membership for the Coalition of 100 Black Women as well as HDC Employee and Community Service Awardee. She has been honored by the following creations in her name: the Betty L. Thompson Scholarship at Washington University School of Medicine, The Betty L. Thompson Scholarship at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia, the Betty L. Thompson Room in the University City Early Childhood School, the Betty L, Thompson Walking Trail at Miller Park in University City, a vegetable in the Hip Hop Community Garden, and a portrait in the abandoned building project sponsored by Better Family Life, Summer High School Hall of Fame. She has been married for 60 years to Jack Thompson, a former Air Force military police officer. Mother of four children, Anthony “Tony” head of Kwame Building Group, a national provider of construction management services, Sonja Branscomb, project manager Kwame Building group, Kwame, a lawyer in private practice and an administrative judge. in Atlanta, GA.

VINCENT C. FLEWELLEN

Valerie E. Patton serves as Senior Vice President, Inclusion and Talent Attraction and Executive Director of the Saint Louis Business Diversity Initiative at the St. Louis Regional Chamber. Ms. Patton leads the Chamber’s efforts for Inclusion and Talent Attraction which is inspiring a greater St. Louis. These efforts include multicultural leadership development, diverse business solutions, talent attraction and Global Leadership Forum (an effort to increase the diverse talent pipeline for STEAM and support diverse STEAM organizations). As Executive Director of the St. Louis Business Diversity Initiative, she develops strategies, solutions and programs for organizations in the St. Louis region in workforce diversity and inclusion (recruitment, retention and advancement of talented people of color) through training, convening and consulting and regional economic inclusion initiatives. She is the first Executive Director of the Initiative and founder of the Initiative Fellows Program (a yearlong leadership development experience) and Gateway Connections (a welcoming orientation for professionals of color.) She was featured in May 2008 Black Enterprise Magazine.

Vincent C. Flewellen joined Webster University in October, 2018. Reporting directly to the Chancellor, he provides key leadership for the University’s core value of advancing diversity and inclusion as part of the educational mission through the University’s network of domestic and international locations. With almost two decades of experience weaving diversity, inclusion and equity into the culture of education in the St. Louis area, Flewellen most recently served as Director of Equity & Inclusion at The College School in Webster Groves. Before taking his role at The College School, he taught in the Ladue School District and for Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School. He also served as Center Director of the University City Children’s Center. Additionally, Flewellen has served as an adjunct professor at the Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis for the past seven years, and he served as a consultant to Washington University in St. Louis in 2006 and 2007. For the past 17 years, he has served as a consultant on diversity and inclusion issues for a variety of schools and organizations, including: the Kirkwood School District; the John Burroughs School; the Forsyth School; the Cochran Community Center; and FOCUS St. Louis.

Valerie is community focused and engaged serving on the numerous boards and has received numerous awards such as United Way of Greater St. Louis, Board of Visitors for Howard University School of Business, and Trustee-Fontbonne University She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.St. Louis Alumnae Chapter She serves as adjunct professor at The Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis. Patton holds degrees from Washington University in St. Louis George Warren Brown School of Social Work (MSW), Webster University (MA) and Howard University (BBA) and has done post graduate studies in Business Management.

Flewellen holds a Master of Social Work from the Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis and his BA in education is from Maryville University.

FELICIA EZELL-GILLESPIE

KENDALL NORRIS

Judge Ezell-Gillespie is a native of St. Louis, Missouri currently serving as the Municipal Judge for the cities of Pine Lawn, BelRidge, Greendale and Jennings Missouri. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois where she majored in Music and minored in Business and a Juris Doctorate from Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University, in Houston, Texas. Judge Ezell-Gillespie’s legal career is broad and diverse, ranging from family law and civil litigation, to defending attempted capital murder and rape cases. Her areas of practice also include admission to the Federal Court’s Eastern District of Missouri and arguing before the Missouri Court of Appeals. In 2001 Judge Ezell-Gillespie joined the ranks of federal law enforcement and became a U.S. Postal Inspector where she investigated crimes against the U.S. Postal Service in the areas of corporate fraud, consumer fraud, government fraud and identity theft. Judge Ezell-Gillespie is the founder of Part Time Legal which later merged with the boutique firm of Ezell Law, LLC. When Judge Ezell-Gillespie is not working, she is pursuing her true passions, music and people. She is the lead vocalist in several local bands performing in both public and private venues. Her community service involvement includes, volunteering on several non-profit boards, serving as an Elder and in other ministries at her church, Third Presbyterian, and actively working with her Sorority, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., where the bulk of her energy and resources has been devoted to the Rites of Passage/Jabberwock scholarship program which focuses on the education, cultural enrichment and spiritual development of college bound young ladies. She currently serves as the Secondary Advisor of the Sorority’s Omicron Pi Chapter on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University. Her life motto is “Your back is never against the wall”, she knows that with God ALL things are possible, and she encourages and counsels her clients through some of their darkest and most trying times with this same belief. She is married to Wesley Gillespie, Sr.

Kendall is the Chief Executive Officer with the Global Leadership Forum, a 501(c)3 organization focused on connecting the world’s leading STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) organizations who are engaging, educating, empowering and transforming underserved communities, and building tomorrow’ workforce. He is accountable for developing and implementing the strategic direction, instituting transparency in the operations, compliance requirements, establishing effective fundraising programs and initiatives. He also partners with diverse communities to establish an inclusive organizational culture, speak for the GLF to enhance the public image, reputation and brand. Prior to joining the GLF, Kendall was a Global Managing Director with Deloitte Global and sat on the Global Technology Executives Council. Additionally, his background includes 20+ years serving in technology leadership positions with global corporations. He has consistently leveraged his abilities as a multilingual executive to develop long term client relationships; global expansion initiatives and lead business development opportunities in multiple countries, cultures and languages. Kendall’s passions are people and education. He is a member of the Board of Trustees at Fisk University. He is a Board Member of the College of Computing and Informatics at Lipscomb University and the Jackie JoynerKersee Foundation. He serves as the STEM chair for the Scouts BSA St. Louis region council and sits on the executive committee. He is a former board member of the Information Technology Senior Management Forum (ITSMF), and President of the Middle TN chapter of BDPA. He has led international mission teams and helps others transform their lives through his consultancy, writing, speaking and coaching. He holds a BA degree in Communications from John Carroll University, an MBA from Case Western Reserve University. He is a Systems Engineering subject matter expert and holds a PMP certification.

APRIL WARREN-GRICE, PH.D Founder and CEO , Liberated Genius

A highly-regarded research-practitioner and educational equity visionary, April believes wellness is social justice and takes a holistic approach to the development of the mind, body, and spirit. She researches equity and access, using her findings to create culturally relevant programs and wellness offerings for communities of color. April teaches in the Department of Educational Leadership at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. She is also the founder and CEO of Liberated Genius, LLC, an educational consulting company focused on equity, access, and wellness. April’s career in education spans more than 17 years and includes service as a high school English teacher and administrator, assistant professor, professional development coordinator, and educational consultant. Dr. April holds a PhD in Educational Policy Studies from The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

He is a determined educator whose mission has become helping underprivileged students learn the disciplines needed to complete their education by using the power of social enterprise to capture their interest and enthusiasm. Being dedicated to providing quality mentoring and educational programs to disadvantaged youth throughout the region, his goal is to infuse social enterprise in areas of Science, Technology, Reading, Entrepreneurship, Arts, and Math using the key phase (STREAM). Mentors In Motion now has a staff of 30 and 7 after-school programs across the Metropolitan Area. Having current success in a high school songwriting competition that reaches the entire metropolitan area, and gaining sponsorhip from The United Way of Greater Saint Louis, UMB Bank, and Recast.

ALIAH BAKER HOLMAN

Communications Strategist, Commissioner, and Volunteer Aliah has developed strategic communications that help businesses achieve their growth and reputation goals. Throughout her career she has produced content and campaigns for companies including Tommy Hilfiger, USA Network, Express Scripts, Dewar’s, and Missouri Foundation for Health. She has committed to her passion for education and community engagement by serving as a founding board member of St. Louis Language Immersion School, where her elder son attends the Spanish program. She currently serves as a Governor-appointed Commissioner and Vice Chair for BiState Development/Metro and as a board member for WeStories, a nonprofit that helps white families teach their children issues of race and equity through children’s literature. She is wife to Eddie and mother to two sons, Eddie D. Holman, V and 9 month-old Brooklyn Baker Holman.

Director of Outreach and Community Engagement St. Louis Area Diaper Bank Her breadth of intentional and impactful work as a community leader, advocate and change agent spans more than 30 years. Rev. Hughes’ courage, creativity, and capacity to inspire participation and collaboration have been instrumental in making sure community voices are heard and community needs are met. Her limitless efforts have positively affected teen moms, the unhoused, families of the Normandy Schools Collaborative and the community at large. Moreover, the unjust verdict in the Philando Castile case bolstered a need to help bridge the gap between police and community so as a result Rev. Hughes birthed Humanity in the Middle in an effort to do so. At this point in her career, we aren’t surprised by her efforts of excellence, but rather warmed by knowing that she is committed to making the world a better place to live!

Director & Founder The Sophia Project Inc. An artist, minster and social organizer, Dawn R. Price has become a force for positive change in St. Louis. Dawn is also the founder and CEO of The Sophia Project, Inc., a non-profit organization that provides programs designed to mentor and strengthen the characters of young women between the ages of 11-18. Many of the students in Dawn’s program come from some of the most under-served neighborhoods in our city. Too many of them have survived violence, neglect, abuse and other forms of trauma in their young lives. The program provides educational, recreational and social experiences like workshops, leadership retreats, formal events and cultural excursions that engage, enrich and transform the lives and perspectives of the young women.

JOHNETTA ELZIE

Co-Founder, #CampaignZero Born and raised in St. Louis, who became known for her online and offline activism and organizing in Ferguson in August 2014. Since then, Johnetta Elzie has worked to organize toward sustainable change. Johnetta sat on the planning team for both mappingpoliceviolence.org and wetheprotesters. org, which provide police accountability and organizer resources. In August 2015, Elzie helped launch Campaign Zero, a comprehensive policy platform to address police violence in the United States. Johnetta believes that Michael Brown and the uprising in Ferguson forever changed her life. Her work as an activist has been profiled in The New York Times Magazine, The LA Times, and O Magazine, among others. Featured on the cover of Essence Magazine’s February 2016 Black Girl Magic issue, activism has changed the trajectory of Netta’s life.

KRISTIAN BLACKMON

Community Organizer, Art Curator Her passion lies in the fight for Black liberation, injustice and oppression that negatively impacts ALL people. She is the creator and curator of several art based projects & exhibitions.incluing, Invisible No More that speaks to the plight of Black Women & Girls, I STILL love her which is a celebration of Women in Hip Hop & R U Still Down?:A Music and Art Tribute to Tupac Shakur. Kristian is also a community organizer for issues that have protected voting rights for Missourians across the state, economic justice & workers’ rights helping to raise wages for over 30K in the City of St. Louis, women’s rights and youth justice rights. She has received numerous awards and a truth teller, lover and cultivator for her people and her culture.

LINDA ROBINSON

Director of Volunteer Recruitment Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri Linda was in the corporate world for 28 years before following my passion and purpose. Linda has an undergraduate from Lindenwood University in Communication and Master of Art degrees from Webster University: Human Resource Development and Nonprofit Leadership. Linda is the cofounder of St. Louis Finest Volunteers team and received many awards for my volunteerism and community service. Linda is also a board member with Monsanto YMCA, CareSTL Foundation and Hearts 4 Hatz Foundation. She is also a member of St. Louis County NAACP, Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis GUILD, Women’s Voices Raised for Social Justice, CSPRC and DAP. Linda attends Friendly Temple M.B. Church and her family means the world to me.


THE HONORABLE REGGIE JONES

Mayor, City of Dellwood Herbert Hoover Club Director, Boys & Girls Club of Greater St. Louis He led Dellwood through the Ferguson unrest in 2014 and continues to rebuild, now serving his 4th term as Mayor. He has seen thousands of young people come through the doors of the Boys and Girls Club in his 24 years to become productive, caring and responsible citizens. He is also a board member for the East West Gateway Council of Governments and a board member for The St. Louis Metro Market. He is also currently serving as a St. Louis County Charter Commissioner. He is also a member of New Sunny Mount Missionary Baptist Church, and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity. His wife of 20 years is Rukiya Jones and they have four children and two grandchildren.

Executive Director, DreamWoke Director of Operations, The Legal Solution Group Tonia is responsible for casting vision, overseeing the administration, programs and strategic plan of the organization. She brings nearly two decades of experience building advocacy and public awareness campaigns to DreamWoke initiatives. Ms. Harris is fueled by her passion for bringing together young adults who are rooted in faith, driven by knowledge and have a thirst for change. These combined forces are having an explosive impact on our community and world. Tonia has spent the last 9 years as the Director of Operations for The Legal Solution Group as part of the legal senior management team. Ms. Harris directs internal operations, staff management, quality control and community engagement. Tonia is the proud mother of her two sons, Darius and Tristan Lake.

TRINA DYAN CLARK JAMES Regional Director - St. Louis NPower

The Regional Director for NPower St. Louis. Prior to NPower, she worked in urban public education as the Founder/CEO of Jamaa Learning Center, the Executive Director of St. Louisans United To Attract KIPP (SUTAK), and as a Broad Resident at St. Louis Public Schools (SLPS). She began her career in the San Francisco Bay Area as an engineer at Solectron then at Pinnacle Systems. She spent the majority of her engineering career in a variety of roles at Apple Computer, Inc. She earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, a MS in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University, and an MBA at University of California, Davis. Trina is a proud mother to three beautiful and bright children- Khalani, Liya, and Rhadi.

VALEDA KEYS Founder Valeda’s Hope

A two-time breast cancer survivor, Valeda is the founder and executive director of Valeda’s Hope. This organization is dedicated to increasing awareness of breast cancer through education and early detection, providing mammograms, nurturing services, massages, manicures, physical therapy, emotional therapy, and genetic services for those in need. She impacts her community as a champion for breast health while responding to women’s needs through her various volunteer programs. Since 2013, she has delivered recliners to women following a double mastectomy due to the diagnosis of breast cancer. The recliners are accompanied with a comfort basket for each patient.

Executive Director, BackPack to BriefCase Her work embodies her spirit and passion for access to higher education coupled with the supporting the development of professional networks and the executive acuity needed for recent college graduates to navigate and sustain careers in Corporate America. Her dedication to the community has resulted in decade of awarding of over $100,000 in scholarships and mentoring services. She has leveraged her Pharmaceutical Sales/Marketing Career to change the St. Louis Landscape by addressing health care disparities and being a voice for the underrepresented. She has served as: the Vice President of Southeast Missouri State Board of Regents, a member of the Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School Board of Trustees and sorority Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Her greatest accomplishment is mom to Olivia.

Keith was raised in St. Louis, and returned after he graduated Cum Laude from Morehouse College. Bahamian native, Candera Thompson created Bask & Bloom, while transitioning to natural hair shortly after having her first child, she experienced lots of dryness and breakage. She decided to use her love for herbal teas and at-home remedies to solve this problem while utilizing her MBA to start her business. Over a period of two years, she began researching and developing her line with the goal of providing healthier ingredients and eliminating common toxins. An author, poet and podcaster. As a young child, reading was used as a coping mechanism to escape reality, while exploring the world through the power of books. Her debut novel, Wealthy and Wicked garnered her the nomination of Breakthrough Author of the Year by AAMBC. Her follow up novel, Kiss of Death was widely received by readers and writers alike. In 2016, Chris Renee decided to spread her wings and embarked on a different writing path. Debuting her first poetry book, Scattered Thoughts Round Midnight, giving readers a glimpse into her intimate thoughts. The following year she published her second poetry book, Delusions of Grandeur.
