If you care about whales, sustainable agriculture, skin softness, and secretly feeling superior when your peers mispronounce things, you’ll want to learn more about jojoba—and more specifically about its rather fascinating byproduct: jojoba oil. Jojoba (pronounced ho-HO-ba, not JOE-joe-ba) is a woody shrub native to the southwestern U.S. and northwestern Mexico. Native Americans were privy to the plant’s benefits centuries ago, when they’d heat the seeds, grind them into a creamy butter, and apply the salve to their skin and hair and massage it into animal hides to soften and preserve them. Clinical studies have since shown jojoba oil to increase skin suppleness, relieve epidermal dryness, and support skin defenses against environmental assaults. The oil arrives in many forms, from esters to beads and even powder, and is readily absorbed into the skin unlike many lanolin- and petroleum-based products, which can leave a film on the surface of the skin. Jojoba oil’s conditioning benefits last an average of eight hours post-application.

The search led to a surprising discovery—that jojoba oil possesses a remarkably similar makeup to sperm whale oil, as well as many properties, including a longer shelf life, that actually make it a superior component in cosmetics and lubricants. Unsurprisingly, this renewable, plantderived oil was a welcome replacement, as spermwhale sustainability is a bit of an oxymoron. Following this discovery, the first jojoba farms were soon established, and jojoba became the second native plant (after corn) to be domesticated in the U.S. Jojoba thrives in semi-arid conditions, requires little water, blooms perennially, and produces well without fertilizer—it also produces an abundance of seeds containing a high percentage of oil, whose uses, while especially suited to the realm of natural skin and hair care, are numerous and diverse, making the plant both environmentally and economically responsible.
Though it still grows wild in its native environment, jojoba is relatively new to the farm scene, so it’s still the subject of some experimentation as far as best cultivation practices are concerned. But thanks to its seemingly endless potential, it’s earned a good deal of recent research, which has greatly improved jojobafarming techniques over the past decade. A few interesting facts about this desert-dwelling flora: It doesn’t produce seeds in a single cycle, so several harvests are often required, and these harvests are generally done by hand. Seedlings take approximately three years to flower, and they flower in the winter. In ideal conditions, the taproot can grow an inch a day as it reaches for the desert aquifer. And jojoba is wind-pollinated—once the seeds split, a slight breeze will carry hundreds of them to the soil. When all is said and done, this native North American plant and its unique oil are gaining positive attention for good reason. You’ll find it in many forms and for many functions, but jojoba oil is definitely worth getting to know, up close and in person.

FARM FRESH: GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR FARMER’S MARKET — Summer is our favorite season. The days are long, the grass is green, and backyard BBQs abound, but it’s the local farmers’ markets brimming with produce that really get us going. That’s why we’re asking: do you know how to get the most out of your market? The sensory overload swirling about the produce stands makes smart shopping hard—not to mention globalized agriculture means we’re no longer used to buying produce in-season. Here are some tips for choosing (and using) the best fruits and vegetables and getting the best possible nutrition and flavor for your dollar.
The Big Picture Every piece of produce has its own nutritional profile. Before you get bogged down with antioxidants and phytonutrients, these general guidelines will help you get the most from your local market: • Smaller is often better in terms of flavor and nutritional value • More color generally translates to more nutrition • Buying what’s in season is the primary point of a farmer’s market (although shopping locally is a great bonus) • Good deals happen, but prices are often higher than in your local supermarket. Plan a menu, shop smart, and buy what you’ll use • Green stems = good, and brown stems = bad • Wash fresh produce right before using, not right after buying • Jams and jellies may be tempting, but look for whole foods—the closer to their harvest state, the better • Talk to your farmers! They can answer questions about seasonality, growing practices, storage, and preparation The Nitty Gritty There are hundreds of varieties of fruits and vegetables you might find at your local market, but here are tips for choosing some staples: Tomatoes are rich in vitamin C, potassium, and lycopene, and you’ll get more nutritious bang for your buck with smaller, darker fruit. Tomatoes continue to ripen after harvest, so green shoulders are fine, but the tastiest have been fully sun-ripened on the vine. Store unripe tomatoes stem down in a paper bag in a cool area. Store ripe ones at room temperature, stems up, out of direct sunlight. Don’t stack tomatoes on top of each other.
Greens are great sources of fiber, calcium, and vitamins A and D (depending on what you buy). The “more color = more nutrition” rule applies here; look for dark greens, reds, and purples, as well as strong flavor and perky leaves. It’s best to eat greens soon after purchase, but cabbage, kale, and chard will last longer than delicate greens like spinach and arugula. Peaches, apricots, and nectarines continue to ripen once picked, so you can buy them in various stages and eat them as they ripen. The best are slightly soft (but not mushy), and fragrant. Berries stop ripening once picked, so select plump and juicy berries and eat them within a few days or freeze them. If you can store them spread out, they’ll keep longer. Corn kernels should look much like the ideal berry: plump and juicy, not soft and wrinkled or hard. Look for green stems and husks. It’s best to refrigerate corn immediately, as the sugars will turn to starch if left out. Ripe melons feel heavy for their size. A good watermelon will have a taut, springy rind and a yellow “field” mark from resting on the ground. For cantaloupes and honeydews, if the stem end smells like sweet, ripe melon, you’re good to go. Meet Your Farmers It’s the best way to learn about fresh produce. A few things you might ask them: • Where do your seeds come from? • What kinds of pesticides and herbicides do you use? • What do you have that’s in peak season? • When was this harvested? • What’s the best way to store this? • What’s your favorite way to prepare this? Your friends and coworkers—and the Internet—can provide nutritional advice, but as far as what to buy and when, it’s farmers who’ll know the most about their own crops. Asking will help you find the best quality, prices, and advice. You’ll save time and stress, and they’ll appreciate that you respect their work. Happy Shopping!

With climate change on people’s minds and the fossil fuel market in constant flux, renewable energy resources have taken a front line role in developed countries around the globe. In fact, according to the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE), in 2014, renewable energy sources accounted for almost 40% of all new domestic power generation projects. A third of these projects were wind power installations, most of which were large commercial projects but included some private home systems too. Windmills may be an age-old power source for pumping water and grinding grain, but wind power continues to evolve as an excellent modern-day source of energy. More companies and consumers alike are lighting up their homes, fueling their manufacturing plants, and making progress at minimal cost to the environment. Overall, 4.1% of US grid energy is generated from wind, but these numbers are set to increase: the US Department of Energy is looking to grow wind energy to 20% of the total US electric grid by 2030.

This is all great news for both our communities and our planet. Not only is wind energy renewable, wind installations also involve no water or toxic byproducts and the energy is both produced and used domestically. In fact, 70% of the wind turbines in use are made in the USA, providing welcome jobs at both factory and technical levels. Wind farms require comparatively little maintenance after construction, and their actual footprint is small, meaning much of the surrounding land can be reclaimed for other uses such as grazing and farming. Businesses have started to realize that to align with consumers’ priorities, they need to do more than use recyclable packaging and earth-friendly ingredients; they need to reduce fossil fuel use. As a result, more and more companies are purchasing power from local wind farms to offset the carbon footprint created by offices and manufacturing plants. These long-term priorities are fueling choices like Modere’s decision to power its new Springville, Utah facility with electricity from the local Spanish Fork Wind Farm. The Wind Farm is located on a gravel pit used to help fund the local school district. It provides electricity to the town, money to the schools, and community engagement through a well-attended Wind Festival celebrating the farm’s achievements. While governments and companies like Modere invest in larger-scale wind farms for offices and factories, they’re helping pave the way for consumers to try small at-home turbines. While home turbines aren’t as common here as they are in Europe, domestic numbers are growing. Any consumer who is willing to invest in initial setup, has sympathetic neighbors, and good “wind resources” (a reliable stiff breeze) can install a turbine in his yard. A small turbine can charge an RV battery or operate a sump pump, while a taller turbine can power an entire home and even sell extra power back to the utility company. For those of us lacking any of the prerequisites, though, it’s great to know that wind power is
increasingly available for purchase from local energy companies. And when we support companies that embrace sustainable practices, we know we’re all coming out ahead.
A Blustery History • More than 6 million windmills were installed by settlers in the American West during the 1890s • In 1990 more than half of the world’s wind power was generated in California • In 2000 the cost of wind-generated-electricity was between 4-6 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh); by 2004 that cost had dropped to 3-4 cents per kWh • By 2012 wind energy powered the equivalent of more than 15 million homes and is the number one source of renewable energy
