Chapter History Coeds plan ASU’s first black sorority, seek union with national organization.

(Herald Headline - 1973) With ASU’s first black fraternity leading the way, the first black sorority on campus began its organization stage October 5, 1972, where approximately 15 young women met “to try to start a social organization to, in turn, become a sorority in a year or so” said Phyllis Hammonds of West Helena, AR, the group’s organizer. “Most of my ideas stem from other sororities” she noted, “but I’ve really become interested since Ebony Esquires”. Memphis State had a newly established chapter on their campus, and we wanted to emulate their example to charter a sorority chapter on a predominately white campus. – Ivory Steward On Sunday, October 8, 1972, this group of young women met to devise a constitution and a name for their organization. This name paid homage to the male interest group on campus, the Ebony Esquires. At this meeting, a preamble was constructed, and a committee was to present the constitution for approval to the Dean of Students, Robert Moore on October 11th.

Starting out as a social group, the Ebonettes consisted of: Catherine Williams, Beatrice Jenkins, Carlotta Greenberry, Fredda Carroll, Catherine Frasure, Pennie King, Mary Boles, Marie Toms, Ivory Steward, Phyllis Hammonds, Donna Griham, Alpha Brown, Arlenda Burnett, Mackie McNeary, Jacquie Tabron, Carolyn Willis, Eloise Farr, Barbaranette Twillie, Jane Littleton, Kelsey Harrison, Arleen Scott, Rhonda Turner, and Earnestine White.

On October 24, the Ebonettes became an interest group. Plans were made about fund raising projects, membership requirements, dues, and a meeting place. Officers elected were: Barbarnette Twillie, President; Phyllis Hammonds, Vice-president; Ivory Steward, Historian, Earnestine White, Corresponding Secretary; Marie Toms, Secretary; Rhonda Turner, Typist; and Jane Littleton, Treasurer.
