Letter from the Editor This issue of The Carnation focuses on dedication, and there’s no shortage of that trait among members of Delta Sigma Phi. Our members nationwide routinely show intense dedication to the Fraternity, to our nation and to worthy causes.

Our national philanthropy, the American Red Cross, is the focus of this edition’s centerpiece story. Each year my own campus, the University of Missouri, holds the nation’s largest single-campus blood drive. In 2013, the Homecoming Blood Drive at Mizzou collected 6,237 units of blood, and our Beta Beta chapter is a longtime participant and co-sponsor.

Clemson University and the University of South Carolina stage the largest multi-college blood drive each year, and in 2012 the two campuses collected 7,189 units. South Carolina won that competition with 3,655 units collected to USC’s 3,534. Those numbers show just how impressive Missouri’s achievement is each year, and I’m proud that my chapter is a key participant.

Beta Beta is not alone. Chapters around the country are helping the Red Cross in a variety of ways, and you can read about all that in this issue.

Meanwhile, other brothers are showing their dedication in other ways. Brother Tom Seto, Purdue ’05, is absolutely

exemplary among young alumni in his commitment to Delta Sigma Phi. Among the older crowd, Larry Niemeyer, Western Illinois ’56, showed his devotion to his chosen profession of softball coaching by setting the record for wins among high school softball coaches nationally. Both are featured in alumni spotlight articles here.

Of course, nobody equals the dedication to our country of those in the military. Also in this issue, we feature some of the many Delta Sigs serving our great nation.

You’ll also find in this edition a new feature called “Pause for Applause,” which briefly highlights some of the many great things Delta Sigs nationwide are doing for the Fraternity, for their cities, their states and the country.

Delta Sigma Phi is all about building Better Men, Better Lives, and the brothers we highlight in this edition display dedication in many ways each day of the year. We salute them and all the others doing similar things.

FGRC Aims to Make a

Difference in Greek World Being a Fraternity member is a tough undertaking in today’s society. In addition to piling school work, rising housing and tuition costs and growing into a highly-functioning adult, members have to deal with more heightened scrutiny than that of their non-Greek counterparts. Every move members of the Greek community make is watched and reported on.

Luckily, the fraternity and sorority community has people in its corner rallying for its cause: FGRC and FSPAC. With all of the negative media attention focused on fraternities and sororities as of late, Delta Sigma Phi Headquarters wanted to take a moment and introduce members to all of the positive strides these organizations are making on campuses and on Capitol Hill to make the world a better place for fraternity and sorority members.

What is FGRC, and what do they do?

The Fraternity Government Relations Coalition is a platform that links the Federal Government with the objectives and needs of fraternal life.

“Three years ago FSPAC (Fraternity and Sorority Political Action Committee), the NIC (North-American Interfraternity Conference) and the NPC (National 6

Panhellenic Conference) decided to combine their efforts to build FGRC,” Cindy Stellhorn, President of FSPAC said.

“FSPAC joined to add political dimension to the coalition.”

While these three entities have their own separate identities and reasons for existence, combining their efforts in Congress makes them more powerful.

Stellhorn said, “We all have a vested interest to remain relevant, and we can maximize our message by combining our efforts.”

Stellhorn describes the members of FGRC as “comrades in arms” and she believes they serve as one cohesive voice to the regulators and Congressional leadership.

What is the FSPAC, and what do they do?

The Fraternity and Sorority Political Action Committee, FSPAC, was developed to raise money for candidates running for office. The money raised by FSPAC is used to impact legislative affairs regarding the fraternity and sorority community in Congress.

• FSPAC is the largest political action committee dedicated to issues of higher education in Washington DC.

• F SPAC is made up of representatives from 20 women’s groups and 15 men’s groups.

• Financial contributions are used to promote and establish regulatory and legislative platforms for Greek life.

• In the past, FSPAC has come together to make Capitol Hill visits in support of legislation benefiting college students.

So why are these groups important, and what can they do for me?

The FGRC has developed the Public Policy Agenda for their organization, which consists of the following: 1. Preserving the power of charitable giving 2. Making college more affordable 3. Providing safe, affordable student housing 4. Ensuring the success of students 5. Combating hazing 6. Protecting due process and freedom of association for students

What steps are being taken to accomplish the agenda?

The FGRC has been advocating for the College Housing and Infrastructure Act (CHIA). This act would allow fraternity foundations to make taxdeductible financial contributions, in order to make infrastructure improvements.

“We’re convinced that CHIA lowers the cost of the students’ overall academic cost with their housing, keeps future leaders safe and will benefit our economy by jump-starting the construction projects,” Stellhorn said in a recent conference call for the FGRC. FGRC has been urging members to reach out to members of Congress to encourage their district to attempt to influence CHIA legislation. Currently, FGRC is at seven Senate sponsors and 56 House sponsors for CHIA. Along with lobbying for safe and affordable housing, the FGRC is pushing public policy agenda items centered on college affordability. The group submitted a letter to the House Committee on Education and the Workforce addressing the cost to maintain a degree in today’s world.

The FGRC believes the cost of college is one of the biggest issues students today face. In the letter they asked Congress to focus on keeping room and board down as well as manage tuition increases.

Preserving charitable giving deductions is another bigticket issue on FGRC’s agenda. If legislation is passed to reduce the value of tax-deductible contributions, it is certain that donors will reduce their gift amounts. Fraternities operate off of financial donations, and if the legislation is passed, training and educational programming, among a slew of other items, will take a hit.

While affordability, safety and contributions are all important in the Greek community, those three issues combined do not get the attention that hazing receives –

whether by universities, by media or by the public.

The FGRC has been offering up recommendations to the office of Congresswoman Frederica Wilson who is looking to introduce hazing legislation in the near future.

Multiple issues have been raised with Congresswoman Wilson as to what should be resolved through the legislation. Issues range from the ambiguity of the definition of guilt in regards to judicial proceedings centered on hazing, what offenses cause a student to lose federal financial aid and how hazing is categorized.

One other large-scale issue in regards to hazing legislation is the campus judicial process. The FGRC believes that in situations where a student has been physically harmed, the correct venue for trial is in the criminal process – not student-run judicial systems. To go along with this piece of hazing legislation, the FGRC also wants to look at who can be found guilty or accused of hazing. Currently, bystanders as well as victims who do not report the hazing can be subjected to a guilty verdict.

To help accomplish the aforementioned agenda items, the FGRC needed a means to connect Congressional members to appropriate causes. They have developed and begun to utilize web-based software called the RAPIndex.

The RAPIndex identifies relationships between stakeholders and elected officials in all levels of government. This service through the RAPIndex will assist the FGRC in finding the right politicians to approach about certain policy issues.

“Should there be occasions where we have university challenges or opportunities, we can also look in to the RAPIndex and see any of our members that might have a relationship with Provost or a chancellor or someone that that we could get the ear of,” Stellhorn said.

While priorities change and focus shifts from one issue to the other from time to time, one fact remains: the FGRC works consistently to combat the negativity surrounding the Greek system and to make universities a better place for not only Greek students, but for students in general.

“If we aren’t out there telling our story, then no one else is,” Stellhorn said.

Scholarship The Delta Sigma Phi Foundation proudly recognizes the following 46 men as winners of the 2013 McKee Scholarship.

The scholarship was open to all undergraduate men and all alumni who are pursuing graduate degrees. To be eligible, applicants needed a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in addition to being an initiated member of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity in good standing.

Story How Executive Director Patrick Jessee’s adversity led him home

As members of Delta Sigma Phi, we pride ourselves on breaking the mold--on being atypical. Executive Director Patrick Jessee’s climb to the top represents what it means to be a Delta Sig; while most men in the Delta Sig nation might not relate to the numerous hardships he faced, Jessee’s story feels profoundly Delta Sig because he embodies the man of courage we strive to be.

Brother Jessee, Purdue ‘01, joined the Delta Sigma Phi staff in February of 2013. His selection as our next Executive Director came on the heels of an extended search by the Grand Council.

They saw in Jessee a promising associate at the largest office for an international law firm (Akin Gump Strauss

Hauer and Feld, LLP). He had obtained his juris doctorate from George Washington University in Washington DC, a top-25 law school. Akin Gump Strauss Hauer and Feld, considered one of the best appellate organizations in the industry, was named in 2012 as one of the nation’s top-20 corporate law firms by Corporate Board Member.

When the Delta Sig nation learned the name and background of our newest Executive Director-- a former Undergraduate Member of the Grand Council who had also served his chapter as Vice-President and New Member Educator as an undergraduate – we knew the Grand Council had made the right decision. Jessee’s resume was full of quality experience in the brotherhood and corporate world.

Patrick’s Story

What we did not know – and would not learn until we finally convinced Jessee to share his story on camera in support of Delta Sigma Phi’s story-telling efforts – was how incredible it was that he made it this far. There was a time, growing up in a challenging and unyielding environment, when accomplishing so much seemed impossible.

Jessee was born in 1983 and spent the first nine years of his life in Mitchell, IN, which he describes as “a town in Southern Indiana famous for its love and production of persimmons.”

“Small town, no stop lights, a few hundred people in the high school,” Jessee said. “When I was nine, I moved to what was a huge city for me -- the college town of Bloomington, IN (and home to one of our newest chapters) -- a very diverse and culturally vibrant town.”

The year was 1992, and up until this point, Jessee had never known a world outside of poverty.

“My ability to eat, have a roof over my head, and survive day-to-day was dependent on food stamps, food kitchens, Goodwill, Section-8 housing and the like,” he explains.

Even after the big move, the family’s situation did not improve. What he remembers most about those hard times is the impact it had on his self-image.

“Often overlooked is the fact that, not only is the simple struggle of surviving in this way very real and very difficult,

the embarrassment that accompanies it as a child is just as devastating,” he says.

“Wearing the same Goodwill clothes to school every few days, shyly admitting to the lunch lady in front of all the other students that my lunch was free, trying to avoid anyone seeing us tear out the coupons from the food stamp books at the grocery store . . . All of it greatly impacted my selfconfidence and sense of self-worth, and not in a positive way,” he says.

Recognizing one’s discomforting differences and setbacks at such an impressionable age would create an unstable, unenviable situation for anybody. In comparison to his peers, Jessee never felt as if he had the same stable ground on which to stand. Then, before he reached junior high school, his situation worsened. His mother’s health began to deteriorate.

Suddenly, not only was there no stable ground to stand on; the family’s sky was also falling.

“My mother was a wonderful and caring person,” Jessee explains, “but was unable to support us due to her health.

My father was a smart man with no follow-through, work ethic, or moral compass. He was mentally and emotionally abusive, and he was completely neglectful in his care for us as children.

“His idea of supporting us was asking to borrow our money to pay for his habits--computer games, alcohol and drugs.”

His family moved constantly because they could rarely pay rent, even in significantly subsidized Section-8 housing. In Jessee’s words, “we would wait until we were evicted and move on to the next place.”

In middle school, Patrick’s life received what turned out to be both a catastrophic loss and a catalyzing force that would drive his development as a man from that day forward.

His mother, after struggling with heart disease from a young age, passed away while he was in the eighth grade.

“I was left with an abusive father and did not have much in the way of positive direction in my life,” he says. “In my environment, no one ever suggested to me that college was an option in my life.”

He assumed that he might graduate from high school, then get a minimum-wage job somewhere. Near the end of his 8th-grade year, the school’s guidance counselor pulled him aside and had him enroll in a program called 21st Century Scholars.

The Indiana-based program, which provides full-tuition scholarships to children from disadvantaged backgrounds if they maintain certain standards throughout high school, gave Jessee something he didn’t have before.

21st Century Scholars gave him hope.

“This was the first time anyone had actually told me that there were bigger opportunities out there for me, that college was an option, that I too had the chance to dream and make something happen,” Jessee says, “if I wanted it.”

At that point in his life, Jessee wanted it more than anything. A switch flipped.

“That drove me to commit myself to making something bigger out of my life. I got into gear and onto a path to graduate from high school with a 4.0 GPA.” Still, the struggle wasn’t over. The fresh-faced high schooler had discovered a purpose, but this did not preclude him from the at-home issues that had defined his early development.

He still lived with his father, except now he didn’t have his mother who had in some ways served as a buffer for Patrick and his sister Sarah.

“After a few years of that, I could no longer stay with him,” Jessee said. “I left the house and moved in with the owners of a martial arts school I had been training at.” He was 16 at the time.

Those owners, husband and wife Steven and Linda Scott, took Jessee under their wing. They, along with everyone else at the martial arts school, gave him the guidance and support he needed at a very critical point in his life.

“It was a difficult time, but with the promise of a bigger future and the support of amazing people, I was able to push onward.”

After he graduated high school with a 4.0, the lifelong Notre Dame fan enrolled at a nearby university whose football team had the same pension for gold headwear, Purdue University.

“I knew I was at a disadvantage already without the connections, background and development many of the other students at Purdue were afforded,” Jessee said. “I wanted an outlet for growth, development and family. I knew I wanted to join a Fraternity.”

One evening, in the midst of chasing a girl he liked, Jessee ended up at Delta Sig’s Delta Delta chapter house.

“When I met the men of Delta Sigma Phi, I knew I was in the right place.”

Befitting of a future Executive Director, Jessee was drawn to Delta Sig because they were the only group of guys who talked about their values.

“I had been going to recruitment events at various fraternities, and none of them were talking to me about the things the men at Delta Sigma Phi at Purdue were talking to me about – leadership, chivalry, a commitment to uplifting our communities through service, and a mission of Building Better Men.” Jessee’s journey from that point on is fairly well known, especially compared to his early life. He went on to become New Member Educator and Vice-President at the chapter level. Later on, he was elected as the Undergraduate Member of the Grand Council.

It’s something we’ve all heard before, but certainly not a tired cliché: Delta Sig changed his life.

“I learned how to grow into who I am today thanks to the development offered by our leadership and educational initiatives,” Jessee says. (He attended LI, where fellow classmates and past facilitators remember him being more comfortable asleep on the Tecumseh couches than in the camp bunk beds.)

He credits the Fraternity with teaching him the value and reward that comes from helping others and how to manage relationships in a house full of men who see things from different perspectives.

As our Executive Director today, he still reflects on the lessons he learned as an undergraduate.

“I think the most telling lesson I learned as an undergraduate is that no matter how geographically disperse our groups are or how different their campuses may be, we are all very similar and share a true identity.”

Any one of us who has attended a national function like Convention or Leadership Institute has seen this firsthand, and it remains one of the staples of our brotherhood. Our leader truly believes in the power of Fraternity. In the 8th grade, the sky was falling. Now, as the leader of an organization with more than 100,000 men, the sky is the limit.

“I truly believe our chapters and our individual brothers are excited to hear from the national Fraternity and get meaningful support and assistance,” Jessee says. “I am excited that over the past decade we have made significant strides to be stronger partners together (chapters, alumni volunteers and the team at Headquarters). I hope to continue to build that partnership and ensure that we work together as brothers in supporting our values and creating the best fraternal experience available.”

Ron Shurts, Morningside ’81, Leads

by Example for AFL Champions When the ownership of the Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football league transitioned over to Delta Sig alumnus Ron Shurts, Morningside ’81, the team hadn’t won the Arena Bowl league championship in over a decade.

A season-ticket holder since 1993, Shurts obtained majority ownership of the team in 2011. In the three years since, the Shurts-era Rattlers reached the championship game every year, losing the first on the last play of the game before rattling off backto-back championships in 2012 and ’13.

Asked about the key to the team’s success, Shurts pointed to leadership.

“I don’t tackle anybody, I don’t throw any touchdown passes, but I definitely believe in setting a direction and an expectation from a leadership perspective,” Shurts said.

“And when you win backto-back for the first time since ’97, there’s something to that.”

As the Co-Founder of Annexus Group Inc., a Scottsdale-based financial services firm, nine years ago and founder of ShurWest Financial Group 25 years ago, his success outside the football world speaks for itself. As one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the insurance and fixed-index annuity industry, Shurts has a 27-year track record as a successful leader.

Shurts said he developed his leadership style, in part, through 14 years as a quarterback, including four years as the quarterback at Morningside College. The next step came when he was a freshman, and discovered that several players on the football team were members of Delta Sigma Phi. “Our four football captains were actually all in the chapter,” he said.

Having arrived three weeks early to campus for football camp, Shurts had plenty of time to make his decision. He joined the chapter within the first week of school and initiated in the Fall of 1981.

Shurts said his undergraduate Delta Sig experience helped him hone the interpersonal skills vital to a successful businessman.

“Anytime you’re coming from someplace and you don’t know anybody, the immediate bond you have in that environment… it’s hard to explain the value of that.

It affects your whole life.”

Once he graduated, Shurts kicked off his business career by selling life insurance, fixedindexed annuities and long-term care insurance to farmers in Nebraska. By 1985, he was the founder of ShurWest Financial Group, an independent financial marketing organization.

The company remains alive and well today, thanks in no small part to quality leadership.

Shurts said he figured out where he wanted to take his life and his business early on in his adult life.

“When you’re in business, the objective is to be able to do transactions and not have to touch every transaction yourself-that’s when you start to have success,” Shurts said.

Twenty-seven years after founding his first company, and co-founding another, Shurts has a champion football team and two thriving business to his credit.

His focus is primarily on Anexxus today. They invent, design and sell investment products. Their customers are stock brokers.

“So we [Anexxus] have about 5,000 guys out there selling our products, and we’ve built a pretty exciting distribution model.”

Throughout his 20-plus years as a successful business executive, Shurts still lives those Delta Sig values today by continuing to remain active in his community.

He is a charitable charitable donor to the Phoenix Suns Charities, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Salvation Army.

With that charitable giving, his track-record of incredible leadership, and a successful 27-year-and-counting business career, we are truly proud to count Ron Shurts, Morningside ’81, among the chapter roles of Delta Sigma Phi.

Delta Sig is nation’s leader in softball coaching wins When Larry Niemeyer, Western Illinois, ’56, retired from coaching high school girls’ softball in 2012, he had compiled a stellar record of 2,089-429, a national record for wins.

That’s an 83 percent winning percentage, a stellar record in any sport.

“I was fortunate to coach a long time,” he says modestly. “And Iowa has the best girls’ softball programs in the country.”

Part of the reason for that is that Iowa plays softball in both the fall and summer.

“Softball is like baseball,” he says. “It should be played in the summer because it’s a warm-weather sport.”

During his 52 seasons, Niemeyer won four state championships, the first at Adel, Iowa, in the 1970 fall season. He later moved to Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School, where he won three more championships – in the summers of 1983, 1997 and 1998.

“I was fortunate to coach a lot of really good players,” he says. Among them were Robin Pingeton, now the women’s basketball coach at the University of Missouri, and her older sister, who played at Iowa.

In June 2013, Jefferson honored Niemeyer by renaming the Jefferson Softball Complex Larry Niemeyer Field. It was an emotional day for him.

“There are so many good memories there,” Niemeyer says. “I could talk about them for days.”

The current Jefferson softball team made his day a special one by sweeping a doubleheader over Waterloo

West, both by 12-0 scores.

Jefferson played at two different locations when he first began coaching there, but in 1980 the team moved to the current field.

“I wanted a nice place for the kids to play,” Niemeyer told Jeff Linder of Iowa Prep Sports on the day the field was renamed in his honor.

“We built it from scratch. I’m very proud of it.”

As for his days at Western Illinois University, Niemeyer says that Delta Sigma Phi was the only fraternity he would have considered pledging.

“I just liked the guys there,” he says.

He worked his way through school and had to go home each weekend to work for the railroad.

“That kept me from being as active in the Fraternity as I would have liked,” he says. “But I still value the time I spent there.”

Time and distance have kept him disconnected from many of his Fraternity brothers, but he reads The Carnation regularly to keep up with what many of them are doing.

“Delta Sigma Phi was important to me even though I couldn’t do as much for the chapter as I would have liked,” Niemeyer says. “We had a great group of guys.”

Young Delta Sig

has a major impact on the fraternity Tom W. Seto was initiated into the Delta Delta Chapter of Delta Sigma Phi at Purdue University in 2005, but in the short time since then he’s had a major impact on the Fraternity.

When the National Convention voted to add a second undergraduate member to the Grand Council in 2007, Tom was elected, and he served in that capacity from 2008-10. He also was named the recipient of the E. Allen James Outstanding Undergraduate Award, the highest honor Delta Sigma Phi bestows upon an undergraduate.

Seto remained at Purdue for most of the time since his initiation, eventually earning a master’s degree in social and behavioral sciences and a doctoral degree in pharmacy. He parlayed those skills into a job with the

person, develop life skills and expand his horizons until he joined Delta Sigma Phi. “I learned a lot from those in my Fraternity chapter, many of whom had backgrounds vastly different from mine,” Seto says. “They were the support system I needed to help me become a more complete person.

“Really, the Fraternity is a laboratory of life where you learn and practice life skills they don’t teach you in the classroom.”

That, he says, is what makes someone a well-rounded individual prepared for life in the business world.

“I learned a lot from my brothers at Purdue,” he says.

“But my strongest connections are probably at the national level. There I was able to surround myself with quality people from around the country who cared about something – our Fraternity – and wanted to make it better. I think it’s

Cerner Corporation of Kansas City, a provider of health information technology systems.

“My team makes presentations to prospective clients to show them how we can better manage their patient records,” Seto says. Those clients are mostly large hospitals and multi-hospital corporations.

He joined Cerner last April and since then has taken on the role of Regional Commissioner for the Fraternity’s Central Region, which includes chapters in Kansas, Missouri and surrounding states.

Everyone gets something different from membership in Delta Sigma Phi. For Seto, “Delta Sigma Phi is the family I never had growing up.”

He explains that his parents were so focused on academics that he had little opportunity to grow as a

enriching to have had that kind of people around me.”

The Fraternity experience, Seto says, gave him something he didn’t get in school.

“I learned research skills in my master’s program. I learned clinical skills in my doctoral program. In a year or two, I plan to work on an MBA to develop my business skills.

“The Fraternity experience complements all that by providing life skills I would not have otherwise had.”

Now, Seto is focused on seeing that our undergraduates around the country gain as much from the Fraternity experience as he did.

“Our young men are preparing for life after college. We have to help them achieve their goals – and their dreams.”

Fraternity partners with In 2005 after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, a group of Delta Sigs participated in the disaster relief efforts of the Red Cross. Inspired by the courage and commitment shown

by Red Cross staff and volunteers, these men effectively petitioned the Fraternity to align with the Red Cross as a national philanthropic partner.

Fast forward to 2013 – Delta Sigma Phi began actively encouraging chapters to participate in both National Preparedness Month (September) and National Red Cross Month (March).

As March quickly approaches, the Fraternity is working diligently to get ready to push our initiative, “Blood, Sweat & Cash,” into full gear.

“We are focusing on regional planning throughout the year [in preparation for National Red Cross month],” Nik Koulogeorge, Assistant Director of New Chapter Development, said. Koulogeorge is working closely with our chapters and helping foster the Fraternity’s partnership with the Red Cross.

As the Fraternity refocuses efforts with the American Red Cross, there are 13 chapters who have a defined relationship with their local Red Cross chapter. According to the Red Cross, for chapters to have a relationship with the organization, they must have regularly donated over $1,000 and work with the local chapter to host events. The following

Red Cross Partnership New Chapter Starts off on right foot, Partners with Red Cross Within Delta Sigma Phi’s New Chapter Development plan, one of many items new chapters are encouraged to dedicate themselves to is the partnership with the American Red Cross. Beta Psi at Arizona State University hit the ground running, and shortly after they started recolonizing they started working with the American Red Cross.

“After recolonizing, one of the first things our chapter did was to co-host a blood drive with the local Red Cross in the center of campus,” Evan Hendriks, Arizona State ’12, past President, said. “The event lasted multiple days in which we had contributions from not only other students, but almost all of our own chapter members as well.”

In September Delta Sigma Phi Headquarters started selling Delta Sigma Phi/Red Cross wristbands to chapters.

From there, chapters have purchased the wristbands in bulk to sell at events in order to raise money to donate to the Red Cross. Beta Psi is one of the many chapters that took advantage of this unique opportunity.

“As the Delta Sigma Phi + Red Cross wristbands have now become available to purchase, our chapter decided to buy several hundred of these to sell at each of our events in the future,” Hendriks said. “The Red Cross is an organization that never stops helping those in need during tragic events, so as a chapter we feel that it is important to be constantly funding their efforts toward these relevant causes.”

Over summer 2013 Beta Psi had the unique opportunity to be the host chapter for the 2013 Convention and interact with Red Cross representatives. “[We] discuss[ed] how our vision as members of Delta Sigma Phi aligns with that of the Red Cross,” Hendriks said.

“Our chapter members were recognized for not only our hospitality, but also our determination to strengthen the relationship between Beta Psi and the Red Cross.”

As for the goals the new chapter has for the future, Hendriks said, ”We will very soon be one of the most involved chapters in the country, where our large membership will propel us to a level of service that we hope can inspire others to volunteer for this great organization.”

Fraternity presents first ever Blood, Sweat & Cash Award during 2013 Convention

national stage a short time after Superstorm Sandy hit in 2012. JMU pioneered the “Restore the Shore” movement, developing wristbands to sell and in turn donating the proceeds to the Red Cross. Their dedication and creativity even landed them a feature spot on ABC’s World News Now. In addition to their monetary donations, some of the members of the chapter even took time out of their own lives to travel to affected areas and aid in disaster relief efforts.

The second Blood, Sweat & Cash Chapter of Distinction Award was awarded to the Theta Kappa chapter from SUNY-Oswego. Sandy directly impacted Theta Kappa, and it impelled them to assist in relief efforts. To combat the hunger that remained in the aftermath of the storm, brothers came together to collect food and other items to donate to those left broken and homeless. In April of this year, Theta Kappa participated in a two-week long event dedicated to raising money for Boston Marathon bombing survivors.

The winner of the first ever Blood, Sweat & Cash Award went to the Kappa Delta chapter at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). Over the course of the last couple years, the chapter has raised thousands upon thousands of dollars, and donated hundreds of services hours and units of blood to their local Red Cross chapter.

According to The Red Cross, they touch more than 100 million lives across the globe each year. They also respond to more than 70,000 disasters in the U.S. alone every year and provide more than 40% of the nation’s blood supply, among many other heroic things. Unfortunately, they can’t do all of this alone. With that in mind, Delta Sigma Phi launched their Blood, Sweat & Cash initiative in 2005 to challenge chapters to lend a hand to the Red Cross.

The Blood, Sweat & Cash initiative is designed to encourage chapters to become well-rounded partners with the Red Cross – it doesn’t encourage one type of giving over the other but encompasses multiple ways.

So what does the Blood, Sweat & Cash initiative entail?

Blood, Sweat & Cash looks at the number of units of blood donated, the number of hours (sweat) donated, and the amount of money donated to the American Red Cross.

To recognize chapters who go above and beyond their dedication to the Red Cross, Delta Sigma Phi created the Blood, Sweat & Cash Award – the award was given for the first time at the 2013 Convention in Phoenix.

Two chapters were awarded the Blood, Sweat & Cash Chapter of Distinction Award.

James Madison University (Iota Delta) was one of the recipients. Last school year, they co-hosted a 5K Color Run and donated the proceeds to the American Red Cross; they also hosted multiple blood drives. Their efforts hit the 22

Kappa Delta Chapter Leaves Lasting Impression on the American Red Cross For the past several years, the Kappa Delta chapter at Virginia Tech has worked diligently year-round to help the American Red Cross save lives and impact those around them.

Since September 2008, Virginia Tech has donated 1,599 units of blood to the American Red Cross. Just from Kappa Delta’s donations, 4,800 individuals lives were touched. For each unit of blood, three lives can be saved. In the last three years alone, the chapter has raised and donated over $40,000 in cash to the American Red Cross.

In the midst of Delta Sigma Phi Headquarters encouraging chapters to strengthen or develop a partnership with their local Red Cross chapter, Kappa Delta is a chapter who needs no coaching or guidance. Their numbers – both in terms of units of blood and cold, hard cash – says it all.

Virginia Tech’s current American Red Cross contact has only worked with them for a few short weeks, but she is already impressed.

“They are super easy to work with,” Karen Halsey, American Red Cross Representative, said. “They are all extremely engaged, and they have volunteers out the ying yang!”

Halsey couldn’t say enough positive things about the Kappa Delta chapter. “I’m constantly bragging to my supervisor about how mature and responsible the Delta Sig chapter is,” she said.

During the fall, the Kappa Delta chapter of Delta Sig at Virginia Tech holds their philanthropy event See Saw For Life.

See Saw For Life is a five-day philanthropy event intended to get blood donations and raise awareness about the American Red Cross and the importance of donating.

Eleven days before this year’s See Saw For Life Event, there was another blood drive on Virginia Tech’s campus.

Even still, they recruited people days before and handed out flyers that prompted 290 people to register for the blood drive before it even began. On the first day the chapter handed out 500 flyers.

“They called me and said ‘we are out of flyers’ so I asked if 800 more would work, and Eric (Rife) said ‘sure,’” Halsey said. “Shortly after he texted me back to tell me I had better go ahead and make it 1000 more!”

“People on the Virginia Tech campus really do like to give back,” Eric Rife, Virginia Tech ’12, past Philanthropy Chair, said. During their See Saw for life event, the chapter was able to keep the momentum going all week.

Virginia Tech doesn’t just hold one multi-day event a year to benefit the Red Cross – they hold two. Kappa Delta also hosts their spring philanthropy event, the Egyptian Expedition.

The Egyptian Expedition raises money (through events such as dime wars and local businesses donating a percentage of their profits) and blood for the Red Cross.

Virginia Tech, a chapter who is truly doing the Red Cross partnership “right”, believes communication is key.

“Everything comes down to communication,” Rife said. “As the philanthropy chair, I am in constant contact with our Red Cross representative.”

New and fresh ideas also help keep the partnership on the up and up.

“We are constantly trying to think of new ideas and how to market our events,” Rife said.

When it comes to how other chapters can work with the American Red Cross to market their events, Rife said, “Get as much help as you can from the local Red Cross and network with them to market events.”

Virginia Tech didn’t just end up with a strong partnership with their local Red Cross – it took dedication, hard work and time.

“Our chapter puts a strong emphasis on philanthropy and our partnership,” Rife said.

Summer Internship

Alabama Undergraduate Fulfills Sports Fans’ Ultimate Dream, Interns with ESPN ESPN has been Grayson Moore’s dream since childhood.

While most kindergarteners were eating their Cheerios and watching Rugrats, Moore was up an hour early to get in a full episode of SportsCenter. That’s right – at five years old, Moore had more interest in grown-ups talking about sports than cartoons.

Around the same time Moore’s dad took a new job working with Disney. Most children would be elated to tell their friends their dad works at Disney, but Moore, a 2010 Alabama initiate, needed to put his own spin on his dad’s new job.

“I told my friends my dad got a job with the company that owns ESPN,” he said with a laugh.

After months of waiting, Moore found out in Spring 2013 he had landed his dream internship.

Moore earned the opportunity to intern for ESPN’s affiliate sales and marketing division at ESPN Headquarters in Bristol, CT. In his position, he supported contract negotiations and marketing efforts with television companies such as Comcast, AT&T and DirectTV. Television companies must negotiate contracts with ESPN to be able to air their programming.

During his time in Bristol, Moore attended Intern Symposium Day, where he was offered the unique opportunity to meet with executives and the President of ESPN himself, John Skipper. “I got to go behind the scenes and see all the studios,” Moore said. “Just being on campus is great – you look over and Herm Edwards is at the lunch table next to you and it’s no big deal!”

Moore, an avid college football fan, saw Nick Saban, Alabama’s football coach, while he was at ESPN headquarters.

For many people, running into sports superstars would leave them star struck. For Moore, he quickly realized he was just an ESPN employee running into everyday people.

“You just have to be professional,” Moore said. “ESPN personalities will always say ‘hi’ in the hallways if they aren’t in a hurry.”

Luckily for Moore he can let his fandom out a little – ESPN promotes being a fan and having a love for the game.

“All the desks have a TV with all the ESPN feeds on them,” Moore said. “We were encouraged to always have it on – especially during big events.”

Being a sports fan wasn’t what landed Moore his spot as one of 70 interns for ESPN, though; he did his research.

“Do your research and find out why you love the company you are trying to intern for,” he said. “It wasn’t because I love sports because we all loved sports; I talked about how they are innovators in the media world.”

Outside of doing their research, he also encourages young Delta Sigs to make sure to pack their resumes and learn to manage time when they are pursuing their dreams. He

credits his jam-packed resume as one of the reasons he beat out over 17,000 applicants for a chance to intern with the sports giant. He said employers want to know how you spend your time.

“The biggest key to success is learning to manage your time,” he said. “If you can manage your time effectively, you’ll have a lot to talk about.”

Moore has extensive experience in the sports world. He’s worked at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex for three summers, works in the University of Alabama’s Athletic Marketing Department, and he’s worked with Tuscaloosa, Ala.’s and Central Florida’s Sports Commissions.

In addition to the sports experience, Moore takes 15 credit hours, works 20 hours a week, volunteers and is President of his chapter.

Moore is an advocate of working hard for things you want because he believes it’s worth it, and all the hard work pays off.

“Get involved in every possible opportunity you can – the competition is tough,” he added. “There is always someone doing more than you.”

As a National Fraternity, we take tremendous pride in the work our brothers do for the world, and would like to extend an especial thanks to those who fight or have fought for their country.

By no means should this be considered an exhaustive list of Delta Sigs in the service. In our ever-expanding effort to better tell our collective story, we tried to uncover a more personal side of their individual stories. Delta Sigma Phi hopes to continue spotlighting those brothers who wrap themselves in the stars and stripes in future publications, but we need your help! Why did you join?

To experience the world in ways that many others will never understand or be able to. I hope to become attached to an airborne unit and jump out of planes as well as deploy outside of the United States. I’ve never been outside of the U.S., and I always wanted to travel to understand other cultures. After graduating with a B.S. in Health Sciences from James Madison University, I wanted to gain some serious life experience and renew my drive to further my education and career path.

The longer I spend here in training to become a 68W, the more I realize that I am needed to help bring other soldiers home to see their families again. Every tourniquet that gets placed on me or IV line that I get stuck with is one step closer to helping someone and their loved ones see each other again. As much as I am here to help further my own personal goals, I am also here to serve other soldiers.

I will have an entire platoon-size element (roughly 40-60 soldiers) relying on me to be my absolute best at all times.

What does dedication mean to you?

Dedication means driving on with the mission even when every muscle in your body is screaming at you to stop and rest for a little while and all of your emotions are piling up to the point that would break any untrained human being.

Dedication means waking up at 4 a.m. every morning to push yourself through muscle failure PT (physical training), a long run, or a difficult ruck march with 30-plus pounds every morning to make sure that you’re in the best possible shape to do what is needed as a soldier, including dragging a 220-pound soldier fully loaded with 50-pounds of gear out of hostile enemy fire. Dedication means getting anywhere between three and seven hours of sleep at night and forcing yourself not to fall asleep because in the future, someone’s life will depend on your ability to stay awake and alert.

Dedication means going weeks or months without showers or hot meals while out on patrol, ensuring that others are safe in the FOB (forward operating base). Dedication means putting your life on the line in order to bring back wounded soldiers to see their mom, dad, brother, sister, boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife, dog, cat, little girl or little boy again.

To be quite honest with you, I originally joined for my student loan repayment bonus.

After going through infantry training, however, my perception changed, and I am more than glad I joined. I serve because I want to give back to the country and reap the benefits; I serve because no one else will. Less than 2% of the population is currently serving in the military when about 45% of the population served between 1945 and 1960. I serve because I gladly put my life on the line so that people like you and me, our children and their children, can remain in a free world without any risk of being invaded and having that freedom stripped away.

What does dedication mean to you?

Dedication to me means committing yourself to something. It means never having a “can’t do” attitude and giving your all to something other than yourself.

Dedication can come in many forms, for it is a way of life, not something tangible. When you dedicate yourself to something, you’re saying “I’m not just doing this to do it, I’m doing this because I MUST do it; I’m doing this because I NEED TO SUCCEED... at any cost.”

Because I was basically wasting my parents money first time around when I went to college, it just wasn’t working 26

out for me because I was trying to drift through college the same way I drifted through high school. You know you need to make a change when you get put on academic probation at a community college. Anyways I just decided to cut my losses and join the military, which at the time was a shock to everybody. Up until then I had hair down the middle of my back, and I was the last person you thought would join the Army. I got out in ’97 and decided to go back to school, used the GI Bill and got a degree in Sports Management from Shawnee State. I’m a charter member of the Theta Omicron chapter.

What does “dedication” mean to you?

Doing what’s inconvenient or uncomfortable even when you don’t want to and/or don’t get any recognition for it.

I felt like I gave Eta Beta some much needed organization while I was there, and they in return gave me invaluable leadership experience that I later applied to my life as a Junior Naval Officer (Cat herding is a learned skill!).

I joined the Air Force because I wanted to make a notable impact to my country. Being a Special Agent for the Air Force allows me to be hands on in criminal investigations and force support to protect US Air Force and Department of Defense personnel, assets, and interests.

What does dedication mean to you?

Dedication to me means that I will stay true to and consistent with my morals and beliefs. Stay the course despite the troubles or pitfalls that come along as a result.

I believe I must stay that course or the entire structure of why I serve will fall down.

Why did you join?

I joined the Air Force Reserves because I had no direction in my life and had this reserve base 10 minutes away from my house and figured, what better way to get direction then to join the military? Once in, I developed this overwhelming pride in my country and wanted to do nothing more than to serve it.

After my first two deployments, I decided to go back to school where I joined Thiel College. It was the school I always wanted to go to but never could afford. I had been going to Thiel ever since I could remember to watch homecoming games and visit the Delta Sigma Phi house because my dad was an alumnus of the Fraternity. I’ve always loved the campus and the stories from my dad of his college and Fraternity days. I joined my first semester there, Spring 2010, and found some of the closest family members I could have ever asked for as well as my girlfriend of almost four years, who was a sweetheart of the Fraternity and with whom I just bought a house. The next semester I was called to my third deployment. I returned in the spring once more and finally got to finish up my degree in December of 2012.

What does dedication mean to you?

The best way I can describe dedication is by pointing to my father... a Delta Sig from the 70’s who I have modeled my life by. Dedication to me means standing up for something you may or may not believe in because you have committed to it. It means always following through with something you’ve already started. It has the same meaning as the core values of the Air Force that I follow every day: “Integrity first, Service before Self, and Excellence in all we do.” It means never giving up no matter how many obstacles you must overcome.

Delta Sig Pursues Music Career Despite Being Hard of Hearing

Formulating his thoughts and accompanying them to beats is brother Shawn Self’s forte. Music is his release, his passion, his outlet. Life dishes out hardships to everyone, but when the beat drops, you would never guess the obstacle Self, Gallaudet ’10, faces.

He stays on pace. He maintains flow, rhythm and rhyme. He executes a precise delivery. He is also on a fine line between hard of hearing and deaf.

Self was born hard of hearing.

in his family born deaf, his mother was born deaf and raised in an entirely deaf family. With both parents possessing the recessive gene, Self’s two older sisters are deaf, as well as his brother-inlaw and several nieces and nephews.

“I was born hard of hearing, but between hard of hearing and deaf is a fine line. So I went to a deaf school my junior and senior year of high school in Georgia,” Self says.

“Since college, it’s leveled off,” he says, adding that his daughter is hearing and his son is hard of hearing.

Self first took an interest in rap when he was in middle school.

“I had grown up loving music, just was enthralled by music, and when I got into middle school, I really started to like rap,” Self says. “My first favorite rapper was Nelly, from St. Louis; he was the reason I got into rap. He came out with a song called ‘Country Grammar’ and I really liked that. I liked that kind of music because of the bass, the beats--especially the beat, that’s what really got me into it.

I love anything that has a great beat and that made it very easy to get involved with it.”

Once he discovered the sounds of Nelly, he was hooked. He began

broadening his musical tastes and explored the works of artists like Tupac, Notorious B.I.G, Chingy and Ludacris.

“Rap has been there for me the entire time,” Self says. “Any time that I had any anger problems, its helped me to calm down. It helps me to ease down the stress levels. Sometimes when I listen to rap, I get into my own world. It helps me to contemplate, to think about what I need to do, where I need to put my efforts, so that music has helped me in my life in general.”

Rap is Self’s outlet. At one point two years ago, he became so upset that Troy Miles, a friend of his, handed him a piece of paper and told him to write down his feelings. Self agreed to the assignment.

He started with the curse words and the expression of anger he knew would be censored – he prefers not to include cursing in his music, but will if the song calls for it – and ended up with lyrics.

“I came up with a rap of my own that way,” Self says. “That’s just one example of an outlet.”

His previous group, Def Nation Royals, was a big part of his growth as an artist.

“Everyone that was in it was incredible,” Self says. “They helped me so much; it was a wonderful experience.

They’ve just helped me so much with developing music and my career and starting off.”

His career is not limited to a music studio or a mic. He ran track and field while pledging the Fraternity. He also played on Gallaudet University’s football team, and was an assistant coach for the Bison during the 2012 season. Sports played an influential role during his time in athletics, and next semester he will play in a semi-pro football program for the Capital City Seahawks.

Dedication, determination and drive are what fuel Self to keep up with his busy schedule. For some studentathletes, playing a sport is enough work, but after his freshman football season ended, Self pledged with Delta Sig in the Spring of 2010.

“When I got into Gallaudet,” Self explains, “I decided I wasn’t going to join any fraternity, until they were explaining about Delta Sigma Phi. I thought ‘hmm, that’s fine, maybe I could give it a shot…

I just really fell in love with it.”

Self’s involvement with Delta Sig not only led him to a band of supportive brothers, but also to a producer. After Self’s mentor moved to Texas, he found his own producer in Nicar Bocalan, Gallaudet ’10. Bocalan is one of the 5 percent of hearing students admitted to Gallaudet University.

“He’s helping me with the beats and everything,” Self says, “so I’m very thankful to him that he’s helped me a lot.”

Self has released three songs since his interview with the Carnation, “Beautiful Angels,” “Polar Bear Dance,” and “I Made It.” Through his hard work as a student while pursuing his passions for music and football, Self credits his success to dedication.

“Dedication is an extremely important part of my life. My DSP brothers are very, very important to me,” says Self. “and being a father to my children – I’ve dedicated my life to that, to being a father to my children, and my music helps me express that. Everything is based on a promise, a belief and dedication. It’s a big part of my life, of our life, it’s the key to success, to having success in life.”

Evolution of Journalism Everyday, people watch TV, listen to the radio, check Twitter, read local news, etc. Today, we live in a world immersed in technology, and journalists are ever-changing to keep pace with technology.

The Carnation had a chance to talk to two Delta Sigs (who have some sort of tie to journalism) and explore how journalism and media has changed and why.

Matt Jones, Transylvania ’96, used to be a lawyer… that was until his passion for sports started putting money in his pockets and food on the table.

After seven years of practicing law with his degree from Duke University, Jones is now the lead talk show host (and founder) of Kentucky Sports Radio (KSR), a website and a TV and radio show dedicated to all things Kentucky sports.

Eight years ago, KSR was in its infancy.

“It was just sort of a hobby I did with some friends as a blog,” Jones said, “and over the course of a few years, it grew and grew and grew and then about three years ago I ended up getting a radio and TV show and stopped the practice of law and have been doing this for about three years full-time.”

Jones didn’t set out to be in the journalism field, but he definitely figured out he wasn’t a meant to be a lawyer anymore when the University of Kentucky announced John Calipari as the new head coach of men’s basketball.

“They called on me to ask the first question at that press conference – that was kind of like an ‘oh wow’ moment, and it was on ESPN. That was neat,” he said.

“I much prefer this. It’s a lot more fun than the law practice!”

Jones credits his success to something simple: good timing.

“When I started KSR, there were very few blog sites, period,” Jones said. “There were none for Kentucky. In the same way that blogs have become popular everywhere, it was only a matter of time before Kentucky became popular and our [blog] was there.”

KSR was one of the pioneers of today’s journalism – having an opinion, voicing said opinion and telling the audience a story they want to hear.

“We present news in a very sort of user-friendly form,” Jones said. “We cover things from a fan’s perspective because we are fans, and we thought to ourselves ‘what would fans want to hear’ and for a long, long time, major media outlets just did not do that.

“We have a lot of pictures of the players in their spare time, and we wanted Kentucky to win,” Jones said. “A lot of the stuff we covered was based on the notion of hoping Kentucky would win, and all those things are things that other outlets weren’t covering, so we did and it gave us an opening.”

Being non-partisan and not having an opinion or picking a side was a thing of the 80s, according to Scott Cooper, Missouri ’85. Cooper, who is the Executive Director of NeighborImpact, graduated from Missouri’s School of

news, you had one place to get it. Well now it has created a lot of competitors, and thus everybody has to be more user friendly and answerable to their customers, and that didn’t used to be the case,” Jones said.

“At one time you didn’t have a choice,” Cooper said.

“You had whatever was on the broadcast news at night – you had three choices there – and then you had your daily hometown newspaper. That was it.”

Cooper believes the reason biases are declared up front is because people have so many different choices.

“Along came talk radio, the internet, cable with a billion selections – those allow people to segment in a way that we didn’t have back in the 80s,” Cooper said.

People are busier now than ever before. With all the hustle and bustle, attention spans were one of the first tragedies of a busy schedule – especially since they can choose the best station, website, blog, etc. that echoes their beliefs and interests.

“Audiences require more stuff but less substance,” Jones said.

“More frequent communication is part of the package these days,” Cooper said. “It’s in shorter segments and

“Journalists aren’t being trained with the same foci that we were. We came out on the assumption that media looked pretty non-partisan and fairly bland in the 80s, so we were all trained with the same model of objectivity and fairness,” Cooper said. “Now they are given to understand that when they come out [of school], they are going to be in a world that demands a much quicker response and perhaps even a more partisan style response depending on the nature and character of that media outlet. That’s something we didn’t have to deal with – we didn’t have the FOX and CNN divide that current students have to deal with.”

Jones believes that the major outlets have started becoming fans themselves and presenting the news in a more biased form because, “they don’t really have a choice.”

“It’s a rethinking of the fundamental role of the journalist.

We were told in my generation ‘you can’t be objective, but you should aim to be fair,’” Cooper said. “Now they are saying you should declare your biases right up front so the reader knows where you are coming from because none of us can be unbiased.”

Catering to the reader is something new – life used to be simple, a few channels and one paper to read.

“In most places there was only one newspaper in town. If you didn’t like it, tough. You knew if you wanted to have any

smaller bites. We used to look at 20-second segments, then we looked at 15 seconds and then 11 seconds, and now we are down to seven and even sometimes five seconds. You can’t get as much information in there, so you have to get it out more frequently – that’s a huge change in the way we are delivering information. We used to be worrying about meeting the daily deadline to get material out-now we are worrying about hourly and even fifteen minute deadlines to update our twitter feeds.”

Technology isn’t going away. In fact, technology is the driving factor in the disappearance of the hard copy newspaper in favor of twitter, websites and the like.

Cooper doesn’t believe newspapers die, however; they will just transform. He still receives his print-form newspaper every day at his door.

“I pay the bill for it because I have this ridiculous, dinosaurlike loyalty to an institution that I went in to. There were eight of them still in their wrappers, piled up on my front porch.”

Journalists are constantly facing an ever-changing world full of technology. To remain relevant they must find new ways to present the same information over various media.

“You have to find a way to match the technology because you can’t fight it,” Jones said. “You can’t fight technology, and too many times people try to do that – it’s always a losing battle.”

State of the Fraternity Leadership & Education

Chapter News

Vision 2025 outlines our hopes for being #1 in the Fraternity world in terms of undergraduate participation in leadership training. Since 2002 Delta Sig has trained over 12,000 men through leadership programming, including 2800 under graduates trained last academic year. In 2001, there were only 125 undergraduates who participated in sponsored leadership training. Since the 2011 Convention, undergraduate participation in sponsored leadership training has increased by nearly 40%. Here is a brief snapshot of the changes the Fraternity has made to continually improve its leadership training and educational programming.

To reach our Vision 2025 metric of being among the top 5 NorthAmerican Interfraternity Conference fraternities, the average chapter size needs to be ~65-70 members. We are on target to meet the goal – our current average chapter size is ~50.

Summit • New Member Educators and Recruitment Chairs are now invited to Summit.

• Since the Summit first began in 2008, more than 1,000 brothers have been trained.

Current Average Chapter Size – 50 members • This average has grown by seven men in the past four years and by four men in the past two years.

This year, Chapter Presidents attend the inaugural Presidents’ Academy.

Regional Leadership Academy • RLAs expanded to more than 15 sites rather than the traditional four.

Online Learning – The LAMP • Delta Sigma Phi will be testing The LAMP – our online education platform – with five campuses this Spring. In the Fall of 2014, The LAMP will be rolled out to all chapters for New Member Education.

Statistics

The Journey • During the 2013 Convention the Fraternity announced a service-learning trip called The Journey. The Journey allows brothers to step out of their comfort zones and learn about other cultures while gaining valuable service leadership development. The 2014 Journey will take place in Honduras.

In the last year, membership initiations in Delta Sigma Phi have increased by an astounding 24%.

• This growth outranks the NIC average by almost 16 percentage points.

• Twelve percent of the initiation increases are from existing chapters.

Fraternity Chapter Growth • From the 2011 Convention to the 2013 Convention, 13 new chapters came to Delta Sigma Phi – 11 of those chapters were previously dormant.

Online Reporting At the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year, Delta Sigma Phi went online. Instead of keeping track of a physical paper trail for items such as the status report or accreditation applications, chapters now have the capability to submit items online. Our online presence extends past chapters.

Individuals also have the ability to add and edit their contact information, search for other members and view billing statements.

Accreditation Applications • Chapters will now submit their accreditation application twice a year – December and June. December’s submission is meant to be a progress report, a mid-term status checkin. June’s submission, as always, will be the full combined results for the academic year..

• Accreditation is officially online! This is a major step in chapter reporting.

• Annual retention rate is 90% -- seven percentage points higher than the NIC average.

•E ighty percent of or philanthropy initiatives.

• The average chapter GPA is 2.97.

• There were 42,000 hours of community service reported for last school year.

•

Nearly half of the chapters increased their GPA over the last school year.

• Over half were above a 3.0.

• Accreditation reports from last year show 22% of our members have leadership positions on campus.

I am humbled and excited to make the transition off of the Grand Council to the Foundation Board of Trustees – I am so very honored to serve as your Foundation President for the next two years.

This fiscal year is bringing many, many positive changes to the Delta Sigma Phi Foundation. Some of the changes I’m sure you have already noticed! Specifically: • We have created a plan of action to restructure our communications strategies so you know how your gifts are being used.

• We have started highlighting more brothers than ever through our various communications methods.

• Each edition of Delta Sigma Philes features alumni spotlights, and we are publishing articles on DeltaSig.org.

• We are sending chapter specific e-mails to inform you of the successes of your chapter brothers.

• Delta Sigma Phi is 100% committed to showing you where your dollars go and the impact your dollars are having on our Fraternity.

As you know, the Fraternity has introduced more educational and leadership programming for our undergraduates this year. Our Regional Leadership Academy went from a handful of sessions to accommodate all chapters to an RLA nearly every weekend at a different location.

We’ve switched to this model to not only be more accessible to chapters but to also tailor our programming for specific groups of men.

We’ve also introduced our Presidents’ Academy – our Presidents-only program dedicated to developing their leadership skills. The Fraternity is supported by the fundraising efforts of the Foundation. Delta Sig is proud to offer this new programming, and we could not offer it without the help of our generous donors.

Each year, we continue to expand our reach in terms of leadership programming. In Vision 2025, we made a bold goal of providing all of our undergraduate members with leadership training. Alumni support is a crucial step in meeting our goals, and we are dedicated to doing everything in our power to reach out to our members and encourage them to repay the debt.

I want to say thank you to each of the brothers listed in the fiscal year 2013 Annual Report for making Delta Sigma Phi what it is today.

The programming, the education, the leadership training, the chapters, the men, THE FRATERNITY could not make it without your support, and for that I am eternally grateful.

Leadership Gift Tom & Cyndy Cycyota Provide Generous Gift

for Delta Sigma Phi Leadership Institute When Tom and Cyndy Cycyota decided to provide a generous $600,000 gift over ten years for the Delta Sigma Phi Leadership Institute, their goal was simple, yet ambitious.

“We want to help create responsible leaders in our society,” Tom Cycyota, Illinois ‘77, said, “who can go out there and be exceptional parts of their community once they’ve graduated and get going in their own career.”

Cyndy Cycyota, a University of Missouri graduate and initiate of Delta Gamma Fraternity, said, “Very honestly, that was the exact discussion that we had in deciding to make the gift. We think that by developing those young leaders, they can be great assets to Delta Sig, their workplace and to the larger community. We also realized that we can make this gift now instead of waiting or including a gift in our wills. By making our gift, we want to encourage others to also consider a gift to the great things that Delta Sig can do.”

For the Cycyotas, “giving back” isn’t something they just decided to do at Convention this summer in Phoenix— it’s a way of living. The two met on a blind date set up by Cyndy’s boss--Dave Watkins, a 1972 Delta Sig initiate who was the former Alpha Alpha chapter president when Tom pledged in 1977 and who would later become Tom’s brother-in-law. Tom and Cyndy have been married for 28 years, and they never truly left their respective fraternity experiences—one a Delta Sig, the other a Delta Gamma—behind.

“As we’ve been married, we’ve tried to put our time, energy and financial contributions into things we think are really important,” Cyndy said.

“The theme is that our charitable giving has been geared towards helping young people, including Boy Scouts, the Student Conservation Association, United Way and now Delta Sigma Phi,” Tom added.

This approach has served them well. Tom is the President & CEO of AlloSource, a non-profit company built

around human tissue donations; Cyndy is a Professor at the United States Air Force Academy and serves on the Board of Directors for the Student Conservation Association.

“Another reason this gift is important to us is that Delta Sig has been such a tremendous influence in Tom’s life,” Cyndy said.

“A lot of the work I do for USAFA and in my research looks at diversity and inclusion in organizations, and the tremendous difference that leaders who understand this can make. We think it’s important that you give young leaders the tools that they need to encourage those goals: become better citizens, better leaders and to Build Better Men,” she said.

“It’s the idea that you’re not just a member when you’re an undergraduate,” Tom said.

“I have three boys who are Eagle Scouts, and they will always be Eagle Scouts. You don’t ever talk about it in the past tense, never ‘I was an Eagle Scout’ but instead, ‘I AM an Eagle Scout,’” he explained.

“By that same logic, we ARE Delta Sigs, and I think it’s crucial that we start to understand that we as an organization should give services—leadership and educational services—throughout the lifetime of a member, not just when they’re undergraduates. And that’s a big mindset change that we’ll be working on over the next few years.”

Since the creation of the Leadership Institute in 1993, the program has catered to the best among Better Men. The Cycyota’s point to two major factors in their decision to make such a generous donation.

“You have to understand that this is a lifetime organization and that they [graduates of the Leadership Institute] at some level, through their gifts of time, energy or money, should participate with Delta Sigma Phi after they leave their undergraduate experience, and that they should give back to the organization the way the organization gave to them,” he said.

“Delta Sig literally changed my life.

As the National President of our great Fraternity, Cyndy and I wanted to set an example for others to follow. We feel really great about this gift and the impact it will make,” Tom said.

“Whether it’s participating in their church or their synagogue, or running the little league team, or being involved with a volunteer organization like Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts, the United Way or whatever it happens to be, the beneficiaries of this gift are men who know that they should give back because they’ve been blessed with some really good opportunities— and one of those opportunities was the Delta Sigma Phi Leadership Institute,” he said.

Executive Director Patrick Jessee expressed the organization’s gratitude for this amazing contribution.

“The Cycyotas’ gift is one of the largest in the Foundation’s history.
