For years, this publication tracked our brothers who either volunteered or were drafted into military service. As a National Fraternity, we take tremendous pride in the work our brothers do for the world and would like to extend a special thanks to those who fought for their country. In each issue we will continue to highlight brothers who have served. Tell us your story or provide the name of a brother or brothers who have served by emailing us at communications@deltasig.org.

Why did you join? I originally went to the recruiter to get out of an English class. However, I pursued it as a chance to earn college money. Ultimately, I attended Basic Combat Training as a combat engineer. Four months later I was transitioned into Cadet Command as a four year scholarship winner. I enjoyed Infantry training so much that I decided to stay in a few years. Twentynine years later I am still serving.

SCOTT EDWARD SONSALLA J COLONEL, US ARMY UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON '91 29 YEARS SERVED (AND STILL SERVING ACTIVE DUTY) Tell us about your current military responsibilities and your role. I am currently at the Air War College. It is the Air Force's equivalent to the Army's War College. However, prior to that I served as the Deputy Brigade Commander for 2d Armored Brigade Cavalry out of Fort Hood. The DCO is the second in Charge of a 6 battalion, 4500 Soldier element.

We deployed the unit to Korea as part of the Army's first rotational brigade.

There we became members of the Army's first official combined Brigade, the 2d Infantry Division (US RK) Combined Division.

Why do you continue to serve? I continue to serve because I believe my presence makes a difference. The world has grown more and more complex and we need a strong military to provide leadership both at home and abroad. I am good at getting people to make 2+2 =4. I can build teams to accomplish nearly any mission. In our family, we tell our kids that if you can do something to help someone, you should. As long as I can continue to serve and be effective as a senior leader, I will do so.

What do you like most about your current/past position? As a student at the Air War College, I am being afforded the opportunity to execute a two week regional country study. I am traveling to Niger and the Democratic Republic of the Congo with 14 others in order to better understand some of the instability in the region. I can't think of a better way to understand global problems than seeing them with your own eyes.

What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned because of your service? I learned early on that I was a good Infantry officer. Unfortunately, during my early years, I often felt I had the best answer. After observing for a while, though, I learned that there is a big difference between being smart and being experienced. Good leaders often have a "gut feeling" triggered by years of experience. It allows them to make quicker and more accurate decisions. Being smart is good, but the best

What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned because of your service? How to differentiate little issue from big issues, small problems from large problems, how to stay focused and the ability to help develop goal-oriented leadership abilities in other people.

leaders know how to draw on experience and on how to use their smarts to accomplish a task. The second thing I learned is that no one wakes up in the morning and says to themselves, "I wonder what I can do to screw up the Army today." In other words, people make mistakes. In order to understand their mistakes or why they do things a certain way, you must see the problem through their eyes, not ours. People are generally good and will perform well when given some guidance and responsibility.

How does your membership in Delta Sig affect your role in the armed forces, or how do they relate? Initially, the military helped me become a better Delta Sig. The discipline and resiliency learned at Basic Combat Training more than prepared me to move 1300 miles from home and to survive on my own. It also provided me the mental toughness to lead, serving as the Delta Sig – Gamma Omega Delta president when it re-chartered. Once I graduated, I was able to draw upon my experience as a Delta Sig chapter president to build a community at whichever base I was assigned. I was able to inspire peers and subordinates to do better things and to work as part of a team.

Why did you join? I come from an Army family and it was my duty to serve our great nation.

Why do you continue to serve? (I see that you’re retired, so maybe answer why you believe it is important to serve). See above What do you like most about your current/past position? The sense of purpose and duty, camaraderie and brotherhood with fellow paratroopers.

How does your membership in Delta Sig affect your role in the armed forces, or how do they relate? Just like our brotherhood in Delta Sigma Phi, the United States Army Special Operations Command has one underlying foundation, "...to bring a better man than yourself into the organization...". It has been an absolute honor and a privilege for me to be a member of these two great brotherhoods. YITBOS!

D

uring Delta Sigma Phi’s first years of existence, the three New York chapters gradually gained strength.

When they were more secure by 1905, it was time to develop the organizational structure of the national fraternity.

Meyer Boskey and Charles Tonsor, the two co-founders, met to prepare for a constitutional convention of the chapters. Boskey wrote a proposed constitution. He was studying law at Brooklyn Law School, destined to graduate first in his class and well suited for the task.

When the constitutional convention opened in August 1905, the delegates quickly approved Boskey’s constitution.

Then they selected the first national officers of the Fraternity. Charles Tonsor was elected the first national president, and Meyer Boskey was elected the first national secretary. With the organizational business complete, the young Delta Sigs turned to emblems.

The earliest Delta Sigs had adopted the Great Sphinx and the Three Pyramids of Giza as fundamental symbols in 1899. They had selected a membership badge at the 1903 convention. By the time of the constitutional convention in 1905, the chapters were impatient for additional identifying marks. They agreed Delta Sigma Phi would not be a full-fledged fraternity until it had more distinguishing emblems to symbolize its principles.

Delegates at the convention confirmed the fraternity colors as green and white. Alpha Chapter at City College of New York had been using those choices practically since the founding in 1899. The Delta Sigs described the colors in the constitution as “white—Nile green and white.”

and two different shades of white.

They repeated the word only to add a poetic quality. The phrase remained in all revisions of the constitution until 1949 when the document underwent a wholesale revision.

At the constitutional convention, the delegates selected the white carnation as the flower of Delta Sigma Phi. The pristine white of the petals, combined with the green of the leaves, the base and the long, sturdy stems, are exemplars of the fraternity colors.

The first members appreciated the rich symbolism of the white carnation.

Thousands of years ago, the ancient Egyptians used the color in their sacred ritual. They considered it a sign of purity. Later, the earliest Greeks called the white carnation the flower of the gods.

For coronation ceremonies, they strung the blossoms into garlands to crown the heads of their kings. Since antiquity, the white carnation had represented nobility and purity of purpose.

The constitutional convention ended with calls for more emblems, those regularly used by other fraternities. For these innovations, the delegates appointed Charles Tonsor to recommend extensions of the Egyptian leitmotif. He was preparing for a teaching career by studying the classics, and he was steeped in ancient cultures.

One of the top students at New York University, he was soon to earn the majority of honors awarded to his graduating class.

When the next annual convention opened in December 1905, Tonsor was ready with his ideas. One of them was a drawing for a coat of arms. An illustrator who worked for a fraternity supplier prepared it from a sketch Tonsor made.

Following standard heraldic practice, a shield formed the basic structure.

Coats of arms traditionally had a helmet above the shield. Instead, Tonsor placed the head of the Great Sphinx in this place. To connect the coat of

arms to the Fraternity, the Sphinx was embossed with the Greek letters.

For more identification, the shield bore the two colors of the Fraternity.

Behind the shield were two crossed Roman axes. Begining before the time of Christ, the Roman axes had represented the advance of civilization, a theme central to Delta Sigma Phi’s purpose.

Following time-honored custom, the handles were strengthened by bundles of wooden rods, signifying the united tribes of the Roman empire. In Delta Sigma Phi’s adaption, the rods referenced the united strength of the chapters.

As conventional for coats of arms, the shield was covered with emblems unique to the Fraternity.

On the front, Tonsor outlined a large triangle.

Inside it, he placed three new symbols he had conceived. These were a lamp, lute and a Gordian knot.

The delegates agreed with these concepts, and the national convention held on December 28, 1905 made this model the first coat of arms. The design was packed with esoteric meaning, but even many Delta Sigs were oblivious to the messages.

For abstruse reasons, the lute Tonsor placed on the shield in 1905 actually had the shape of a lyre. He knew the difference between the two musical instruments, but he switched the names.

This transposition of words has confounded generations of Delta Sigs.

The lyre and lute were both popular musical instruments in pre-dynastic Egypt, and Tonsor understood the difference between them. The lyre is the predecessor of the harp, and it is shaped like a small harp. The lute is the forerunner of the guitar, and its long neck prefigures the form of the modern guitar.

The lyre was the most important musical instrument of antiquity. For thousands of years the lyre has signified light, singing lyrical music. The importance of the lute for Tonsor was not its small, sweet tone but rather its broad meaning. The name identifies more than a single instrument.

Lute is a general term for all string instruments in which the strings are stretched over a frame with a sound box. The term lute includes lyres, guitars and many similar devices.

Tonsor realized the image of a long-necked instrument would not fit within the small triangular space available on the shield. Undoubtedly and more importantly, Tonsor chose the recognizable shape of the lyre to signify the harmonious music he wanted the Fraternity to raise. He called it a lute to invoke the familiar metaphor for music. His choices created confusion, but his term became fixed long ago.

The Fraternity wanted to designate a grip, password and knock. These identifying signs were customarily used by fraternal groups. Secret societies had long before learned to screen for slick college dropouts who knocked at a chapter’s room door and, under claims of membership of a chapter at another school, gained free lodging and meals.

Sometimes imposters infiltrated a group and after a few days, departed in the dark with several wallets. Over the decades, some Delta Sig chapters have been conned by pretenders.

Before the December 1905 convention adjourned, the delegates adopted the Fraternity’s signs of recognition.

They included a knock of identity and a whistle based on the cadence of the knock. A member wisecracked that a whistle “puts the Fraternity on the level of every alley gang.” The notes of the whistle were first published in the 1955 songbook, but they were not sounded often. In recent years, the Singing Pilgrims have practiced it at national conventions.

men. All of this is held together by a personal touch provided by Zach.

A few years in the work force building up savings, Zach and his wife, Kirsten, relocated to Chicago to pursue work in show business.

Kirsten, an accomplished tap dancer, sought to further hone her craft while Zach hunted down acting roles. To keep themselves afloat between gigs, the duo took part-time work. Zach found employment at Mark Shale – an apparel retailer in the city.

This part-time position would soon unlock the passion within Zach that had been developing his whole life.

After working the showroom floors, he began to move up at Mark Shale. With each new role came more knowledge about the world of fashion. Those images of sharpdressed men from his childhood were now his to make with his clients.

Zach soon became the sole made-to-measure specialist in North America at Suitsupply, a Dutch clothing company. This was his avenue to move from a typical clothing experience into the world of custom tailoring. Clothes were no longer fused together to fit the masses, but were instead a canvas on which style was painted personally for the buyer. There was a world of difference between “fused” and “canvassed” clothing.

Roles he played at the Alpha Lambda chapter helped Zach to realize how to find his role in a group, and to expand upon it. During his undergrad years, he served his chapter as a recruitment specialist and chapter historian. Having attended both the 2005 Convention, 2005 Leadership Institute and several Regional Leadership Academies, leadership roles were familiar to him.

“Once you understand the bare minimum, you can excel in other aspects,” said Zach. “Because of Delta Sig, I had experience with finding my place, then growing beyond it.”

At BLVDier, Zach adopts a personal approach to everything his does. All transactions begin with an appointment.

At the appointment, he not only spends the hour taking your measurements, but getting to know you and your personal tastes. He then explains in detail the meaning and rationale behind every style, stitch and cut option. The result is something that reflects both the client’s personality and Zach’s skill. His canvassed suits are just that – works of art painted with the tools provided by the client during each session.

No matter how they may look in casual wear, a fitted suit transforms them into something altogether. An entertainer, a professional, or a dashing host – the suit becomes a portal to a new side of a man.

No one in the Uttich household had a particular propensity for dressing up, but the allure of the suit still found its way to Zach, Millikin University ’04. Growing up watching James Bond’s escapades and triumphs, he knew from a young age the correlation between dressing well and success. Zach’s time on the stage as a Theater major only reinforced his belief in the power in clothes. A new outfit could literally transport him and his audience to a different place and time.

FAST FASHION FIXES Attending your first event that requires a jacket and tie but don’t have money for a custom suit? Here is how you can put together a sharp ensemble for a fraction of the cost!

BLVDier’s social media pages are filled with photos aplenty of their suits and satisfied clients, but they also are home to some quick tips and inspiration for those wanting to look sharp. Zach offered up a few quick tips to keep in mind when dressing up, buying your first set of dress clothes, and simple do’s and don’ts for everyday use.

Thrift stores often have sport coats for bargain prices. Start by finding a coat that fits as closely as possible. Once your jacket is in place, a white shirt and matching slacks are up next. If you already have dress shoes, choose pants based on what color of shoe you have available. Brown dress shoes will work with nearly any trouser.

• Style is an every-changing thing – a little research will go a long way (Tumblr, Instagram, blogs etc.)

• Your socks should match your trousers, or be one shade darker (or lighter).

• Never wear white athletic socks with dress clothes.

• If your pants have belt loops, wear a belt as well.

• Don’t wear both suspenders and a belt.

• A banana peel can be used to shine shoes in a pinch.

• Don’t wear a tie without a jacket. It was ok during your younger years, but as an adult, it can make you look unprofessional.

• Sweaters and vests can be layered for style and warmth • A turtle neck under a sport coat creates a classic look that is making a resurgence today.

With a jacket, pants and shoes in order, fill in the rest of the blanks as necessary.

If you already have dress pants and shoes, this works especially well. Simply find a jacket that fits closely, and then take it to a tailor. A tailor can make your thrift store find fit like a brand new piece. PILGRIM DEGREE Just where do those fezzes come from?

Brothers attending Convention are invited to take part in a long-standing tradition noted for its fun and fellowship. Originally held in 1923, but regularly since 1979, the Pilgrim Degree was and still is the third stage in the progression of Delta Sigma Phi membership, following the pinning ceremony and initiation.

Only awarded during Convention, the Pilgrim Degree is the mark of a Delta Sig who has journeyed deep into the riddles and hidden meanings of the Fraternity, laughing and learning alongside fellow brothers. This will be the 20th time the current degree has been bestowed upon Convention delegates.

ABOUT THE LAUGHTER G

rowing up in a small, rural town has a way of making the world feel impossibly small. Your dreams often feel like the biggest thing in the entire town. Things would definitely be different as soon as you hit the road. Rob Little, Central Michigan University ’94, had no clue how true that would be for his life.

Rob grew up in a small town in Michigan. It was only big enough to be home to a single stoplight.

“I can’t remember a single time in my life when I didn’t want to be a comedian,” said Rob.

In light of his present reality in a small town in the Midwest, Rob went to his local community college to study computer science. His favorite teacher had imparted a love for computers into him, and a career fit for a small town boy was born. After a few years of community college, Rob wanted to experience what he felt was the true college experience, and transferred to Central Michigan University.

Once he was on campus, Rob was

immediately drawn to Greek life. After touring most of the fraternities the campus had to offer, he clicked immediately with the men of Delta Sigma Phi. Although he joined a little later than most, his zeal for the Fraternity was unmatched.

“It was the best time of my life! It was just so much fun! You’ve got 50 dudes together living through the same experience that you are,” said Rob. “There is nothing else like it.”

His move from the community college not only led him to the Fraternity, but it happened to place him only 2 blocks away from the catalyst for his future career. Rob found himself at Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle, a mainstay in

comedy history, on an almost nightly basis. He discovered that they taught a class on the business side of comedy, and immediately signed up.

Though the classes focused on the business aspects of comedy, his teacher told Rob and his classmates that they would have their shot at the mic. For the boy who grew up dreaming of being a comedian, it was a literal dream come true. He would soon be performing on the same stage that Tim Allen started his career on. He only had a 3-5 minute time slot, but it was more than enough.

“Once I told my first joke, it felt like someone had poured warm paint over my whole body!” said Rob. “It was addicting.”

A few years after that experience, Rob left his job at IBM to become a comedian full-time.

To live the life that comedy demands, you must become comfortable with living on the road. Even when you have a permanent home, enormous amounts of time are spent driving, flying and more. Rob frequently books shows for cruise lines, meaning he is at sea for several weeks of the year. Once he returns to shore, he flies back home, or hits the road to make the next destination.

It is a taxing lifestyle, but one that teaches many different lessons. When Rob first began, he would often stay at budget motels, sometimes on his own dime or one provided by the club he was performing at. These “Comedy Condos” would vary wildly in shape, size and cleanliness, making for several memorable moments.

“You learn not to be a germophobe!” said Rob.

Having traveled the country, Rob has also noticed that the sense of humor does vary based on where he is.

Jokes that hit it big on the west coast may not go over well in the Midwest.

He attributes this to people growing up in different cultures. This challenge has made Rob’s comedy versatile.

March 8, 2017 marked 19 years since he made the switch to comedy.

His style has been described in a few different ways over the span of his career. Younger fans often describe him as a Chris Farley, while the older fans tend to lean more towards a Don Rickles. Either way, the core tenants remain: his style is high energy, goofy and very silly. Appropriate for the man often described as “America’s Happiest Comedian.”

Shows often begin with jokes designed to feel out the crowd. Reading an audience is key, and Rob’s experience has given him the ability to feel out the crowd effectively and adjust his show accordingly. When he first started out, his jokes were often faster, punchier jokes and one-liners. Now, he favors a longer, story-focused approach to his comedy. These stories often riff on his own experiences and tendencies.

another mainstay for his work. He was a regular on both Comedy Central’s "Nick Swardson's Pretend Time", and FOX Sports’ “Best Damn Sports Show Period”.

And he has no plans on slowing down, either. Rob recently pitched and filmed seven episodes of a show titled “Here’s a Little History”, which has Rob traveling to various historical locations to dig deeper into their significance. It aims to give a fun twist to learning about key moments in time.

One of Rob’s favorite aspects of his work is it helps him to stay in touch with all of the friends he made on the Central Michigan campus. Whenever he can, he meets up with chapter brothers before and after his shows. Delta Sig has become his family while he travels and performs.

We don’t just want to tell you about Rob – we want to give you a chance to see him perform live. That’s why we’re so excited to announce that Rob will be closing out our 2017 Convention with a bang, when he performs at our closing celebration on July 9.

Tyler O’Briant, Kansas State University ’13, has always liked to keep himself busy – always turning his attention to a new project as soon as one winds down. 60-80 hours a week of effort between work and studying were the norm. He was at his best when he kept moving forward.

It all changed abruptly one night after Tyler was t-boned by a drunk driver. While making a complete recovery physically, the experience left a deep impression on Tyler. He took some time to slow down and evaluate where he was and where he was headed. He quit his job, and took up a position as a barista while he reevaluated his life.

On campus at KSU, Tyler was quickly drawn to men of Delta Sigma Phi. Tyler made quick friends with a junior, Alex Severance ’12. The duo immediately clicked, and soon the creative energy was flowing.

In 2013, Kansas educational programs started seeing cuts. Tyler and Alex were both perplexed by this, and sought to find the source. Their search led them to find that the majority of people affected by the budget cuts don’t vote in their local and state elections.

With the problem identified, Tyler and Alex set out to create a solution.

The Higher Learning Movement, a non-profit focused on educating college students on the importance of voting, was born. Over the course of the next year, the Higher Learning Movement was working in conjunction with the school boards of all 6 of the major college campuses across Kansas. They also have over 100 volunteers across all of the campuses.

As their non-profit grew, financial concerns continued to mount. Tyler knew there had to be a way to alleviate these issues, and began to study finance

during his spare time. During his summer internship, he hit the books even harder, learning more and more about portfolio management and business finances. As he learned, he realized that this information could make a huge impact on his fellow students.

Tyler launched his own hedge fund, Atlas Financial. Atlas Financial was established to do more than simply fund Tyler’s own non-profit, but to be a potential funding source for other clients. Before this reality could come to fruition, the hedge fund had to start turning a profit.

The first year was a struggle.

Watching his own money rise and fall took an unprecedented psychological toll. However, after many months of trial, error and research, Tyler began to get a hang of it, and started turning a profit. He is currently up 600% of his initial investment.

Atlas Financial is still growing today. Tyler created a program that helps to automate and run most of the process, freeing time to pursue his classwork.

Now in his senior year at Kansas State, Tyler has a new project in mind.

With the police playing such a prominent role in the media, he wanted to find a way to help law enforcement conduct business in a safer manner.

Means to effectively document every situation could also prove invaluable.

The solution to both problems came in one package: drones.

a reconnaissance and a documentation tool, enhancing police officers’ ability to more fully understand the myriad of dangerous situations they face on a daily basis as well as provide more appropriate, over-the-shoulder documentation once these situations commence… Eyas’s main purpose, to keep America’s Finest and the citizens they protect safe.”

Tyler won K-State Launch, an entrepreneurial idea competition for KSU students with new business venture ideas. Tyler was able to use the winnings to build prototype drones for testing and demonstrations. The drones are powered by software from DJI, a world leader in drone technology and development. Tyler has partnered with DJI for the Eyas.

The AI Tyler developed for Atlas Financial served as a foundation for the AI he is currently developing for the Eyas drone. The AI aims to allow the drone to follow officers without having to be controlled at all times, yet allows the drone to be controlled manually when the situation arises. It will also avoid collisions with trees, buildings and ceilings.

Tyler is prepping to enter 3 more start-up competitions to raise more capital to further refine the Eyas. The Eyas is up and flying, seeking investment and filing for patents. Sam Rozell, a fellow K-State senior, has joined in on Eyas. Sam has been applying his studies in electrical engineering and physics to the hardware design of the drone.

The future is wide open come graduation. Equipped with an electrical engineering degree, Tyler is facing a wide horizon of possibilities. If the past four years have shown us anything, it is that he is definitely going to keep pushing the mold.

Walk away without a scratch ™

A

teacher of mine in grammar school told our class that scratching one’s head that was not caused by a skin disorder was a primitive action and that only monkeys did it. That may very well be true. I am no less confused than the average Neanderthal and I have been known to scratch my head.

I suffered from eczema, psoriasis, and athlete’s feet. Suffering from all of these varieties of skin disorders, I was always looking for new products that were safe and effective. Aside from the usual symptoms of dry, scaly skin, I was

always searching for relief from the unpleasant symptoms caused by the dry, scaly condition. Anyone with scaly skin conditions can attest to the fact that few other symptoms are more annoying than this most common skin disorder.

A couple of years ago, I was fortunate to have come across a developmental product that, when applied to my scaly skin, it temporarily soothed the unpleasant symptoms in areas of skin caused by both eczema and psoriasis, on different parts of my body.

Making a long story short, I was

involved with an industrial biotech company that produced unique products that were inherently safe because the technology was based on natural extracts.

Our Chief Technology Officer started to develop a skin cleanser and lotion based on the technology. I lowered myself into a sub-human form and became a guinea pig for his products. The initial sample that I tried made my eczema and psoriasis worse and the unpleasant sensations exploded. I lost faith. But the scientist then took a turn down an unintuitive path and produced a new extract mixture. The formulated product he gave me, that included a new “improved” natural extract, provided a notable though temporary - feeling of relief to my disorderly skin conditions.

The technology that drove the product is ultimately derived naturally and we call it a Superior Protein derivative, or for short, SPR+™. Having evolved over millions of years, cells developed survival mechanisms to respond to environmental threats, or stresses, by producing certain protective agents. In nature, these agents function to protect the cell.

Our initial development has been based on harnessing Mother Nature’s natural protective agents. We added agents like glycerin that showed a synergistic effect, and targeted their combined ability to restore and hydrate sensitive skin and improved the hydrating benefits they provide on their own.

From my initial experience, I suspected that we were onto something. I had tried a lot of different products for my psoriasis and eczema and none had results like our prototype formulas, outside of steroids, which can have negative side effects when used over longer periods of time. Fast forward from those initial positive sensations on my skin.

We had to prove that the technology worked on a large scale. At this time, we merely had interesting results from

initial trials. This did not provide the basis to form a technology company quite yet. We started out as, and still are essentially, a virtual company, as I was the only full-time employee.

We assembled a team, including one devoted scientist, and a driving visionary. We did a number of alpha level studies, by coercing friends and family into trying out new formula. They had no idea what was in the product, but “trust me, it won’t hurt you," was a successful strategy. We were hoping that the initial feedback would be positive, but we were not expecting that every single response would come back raving about the results from our prototype products. That is when it started to sink in that we had something special.

We optimized the process and scaled up to production levels. We wanted to prove the efficacy and targeted a known skin disorder that had dry, scaly skin: eczema, a rash-like skin disorder. We then ran clinical studies on 35 people who were self-assessed as suffering from eczema. A dermatologist reviewed the final results. The clinical study results showed that 100% of the subjects reported seeing signs of temporary relief from the symptoms in a matter of a few minutes. None reported any adverse effects. Additionally, subjects reported to have improved skin condition after applying the product daily for 21 days.

These were excellent results for a topical product.

After much development, we believe that the product works by improving the hydration of the dry, scaly condition. Hydrating the skin is a known feature for improving sensitized skin symptoms. With better hydrating performance, the body is better able to

deal with the stress conditions. And, the key protein-derived ingredients are inherently safe, non-toxic and compati-

Developing a brand, aside from developing a formula, has been a fun, yet interesting challenge. You never realize what it really takes to establish a brand, even something as seemingly simple as a name. It seemed as though every name that we imagined in the cosmetic and skin care industry had been trademarked or already in use.

We went through months of brainstorming with multiple restarts at the proverbial drawing board trying to create the perfect representation of our story and product. Our product aims to tem-

porarily soothe and calm the irritating symptoms of dry, scaly skin conditions.

We decided that the one key phrase that encapsulated that idea was “peaceful skin,” thus conceiving ZenDerm Products.

We have been blessed with finding and then being able to develop a technology that can, so profoundly, help so many people, not only by temporarily soothing annoying symptoms and improving self-image, but also hope to relieve them from having to use topical agents that can have severe side effects. e love our pets for their innocence, their childlike excitement and their unconditional love. Our pets make us happy and we reward them for it.

Kevin Remillard, Georgia Southern University ‘10 is a pet lover. He and his fiancĂŠe, Elena, adopted Remi, a lab mix who was found abandoned in the woods. Kevin and Elena soon discovered that Remi had several perplexing medical problems including rapid heartbeat and anemia. With lots of love and money, he was nurtured back to health.

Today, Remi loves everyone. He runs hard, often exhausting several dogs before he is ready to come home. He prefers a little deer meat, salmon or duck with his food. His favorite word is “treat”. He is also a “scaredy-cat” who tends to freakout and hide under the coffee table if any furniture is moved or replaced.

Kevin will be the first to admit he doesn’t like shopping.

“Time is Money” says, Kevin, who most often purchases as much as he can online via Amazon simply because of his dislike for traffic. He went online to find a variety of quality toys and healthy food and treats that Remi’s digestive system could tolerate. He wanted them reasonably priced and delivered to his door. What he found were subscription boxes requiring a credit card and long term commitments, while providing no information on what would be in the box. Kevin felt there should be a better offering for people who love their pets and don’t want to spend all day shopping for individual items, so he and business partner, Todd Lease, launched Prime Pet Box.

Prime Pet Box is not yet a full-time career for Kevin, his business partner, Todd, or Kevin’s fiancée, Elena Gonzalez.

Getting the business off the ground in their spare time was not an easy task. Kevin’s background is in the logistics and supply chain industry, but he is now in corrugated packaging sales at Dalton Box, (Dalton GA). The support and partnership of Dalton Box played an integral role in taking Prime Pet Box from an idea to a reality. Kevin noted that Prime Pet Box would not at all be possible without the support from his network.

Prime Pet Box is not the first organization that Kevin has helped launch. As a freshman on campus at Georgia Southern University, he rushed several fraternities on campus. He was beginning to feel that Greek Life might not be for him when he met a few men who were working to start something new.

Kevin, alongside a handful of other freshmen, joined with those men to help start the Theta Omega new chapter on campus.

After two years of hard work, Theta Omega received their charter, becoming a full-fledged chapter. The new chapter rented a chapter house off-campus, and made a name for

themselves amongst the crowded Greek Life scene on campus.

Kevin was highly involved in the chapter, serving as recruitment chair, vice president, and eventually chapter president and Founding Father.

“Joining Delta Sig was one of the best decisions I ever made,” said Kevin. “There is no way I could have connected with the people I have without Delta Sigma Phi. Most of my best friends today are Delta Sigs.”

Being a Founding Father of the Theta Omega chapter has been a point of pride for Kevin ever since. He recruited his younger brother into the chapter a few years later, and continues to attend chapter events and support fellow chapter brothers.

Kevin is now focused on expanding the offerings of Prime Pet Box. New editions of the dog box are currently in the works, including a “tough chewers” box with super durable toys & long-lasting, busy treats. Cat lovers—stay tuned as “Prime Cat Box” is coming soon! As the company grows, the team is committed to giving back. Prime Pet Box is partnering up with local no kill animal shelters to donate a portion of their proceeds to help save our furry friends.

“I am forever grateful to my family, friends, colleagues, coworkers and of course my Delta Sig brothers who provided me guidance and support along the way,” said Kevin. “The sky’s the limit for Prime Pet Box.”

ew things can match the thrill of a live entertainment event. Seeing the action firsthand with the energy of the crowd breathes a life into the event that cannot be captured in film. But behind every excellent performance, every touchdown, and every encore is a staff and stage. A great stage and crew can make all the difference for any event.

From a volunteer usher at an auditorium to managing several highend sports facilities, Eric Hart, Illinois State University ’86, has seen the entire spectrum of the entertainment facility world. His current position as CEO of the Tamps Sports Authority has him managing Raymond James Stadium (home field for the Tamps Bay Buccaneers), three city golf courses across the city, and acts as the landlord for George Steinbrenner Field (the New York Yankee’s off-season training home), and the Amalie Arena (home of the Tampa Bay Lightning).

Eric always wanted to be close to the action. The energy of live events fueled him. To be a part of as many events as he could, he began working at the Braden Auditorium and Redbird Arena on the campus of Illinois State University. His labors focused on the performing arts series and major concerts. His time at the auditorium began as a ticket seller, then a stage hand, all while volunteering as an usher. He was on the front lines of everything the auditorium was doing.

His zeal for his work was evident, and he was offered a position at the auditorium as a graduate assistant. His new role had him making the schedules for the performing arts series, guest concerts, and other acts that visited the campus.

Ogden Entertainment Services was Eric’s next stop. He took a job with them and headed out west to Iowa, where he worked as the Patron Services Manager at the Iowa State Center. The Center consists of the following: Hilton

Coliseum, Stephens Auditorium, Fisher Theater, Scheman Building, and Jack Trice Stadium. Eric soon filled a similar position at the UIC Pavilion at the University of Illinois at Chicago as their Assistant Director, and was then promoted to Associate Director.

After working in the arena and performing arts sphere for so long, Eric felt it was time for a change. A position opened up as the Director of Event Services for the Minneapolis Convention Center. The shift from auditoriums to a convention center posed big changes, akin from switching from a sprint to a marathon.

Arenas and performing arts run on a more seasonal cycle. During peak seasons, there can be several events and shows going on in a short time frame. Everyone on staff focuses solely on those events for a period before a break emerges. A convention center is a constant run. The Minneapolis

Convention Center hosts over 1,200 events in a year, averaging more than 4 events daily. To get this done, Eric directed over 125 employees to see each event go smoothly.

After a few years at the Minneapolis Convention Center, it was once again time for a change of pace. Eric’s next stop was the Lansing Entertainment & Public Facilities Authority. A public authority operates in a different manner than what Eric was accustomed to.

Public authorities are government entities with a legal mandate to govern an aspect of public life. Eric now worked in the public sector.

The Lansing Entertainment & Public Facilities Authority oversaw the Lansing Center, the city market, the Cooley Law School Stadium, and helped managed the Common Ground music festival. His years of experience were tested as he helped run a little bit of everything across the city.

Out of the blue, Eric got a phone call. The Tampa Sports Authority was looking for a new CEO, and they wanted him to apply. A few months later, he and his family made the move down south, and the rest is history.

“No day is the same!” said Eric.

The Raymond James Stadium is his biggest current facility, which hosts a wide array of events. Home games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are a mainstay, but the iconic pirate ship will overlook a U2 concert, an international soccer event, college football, monster truck rallies, and many more over the course of a year. In January, the stadium had a Buccaneers home game, College Football Playoff National Championship, the Outback Bowl, and the Monster Jam monster truck rally in a matter of days.

International events are some of Eric’s favorite to prepare. In 2014, the 15th annual International Indian Film Academy’s Weekend & Awards was held

in the United States for the first time.

The event, essentially the equivalent of the Oscars for Bollywood, drew almost 800 million viewers worldwide, and it opened at Raymond James Stadium.

With such a wide audience, special considerations had to be taken for the event. Planning with a 14 hour time difference, language barriers, issues in understanding the culture, timing issues, production issues, issues converting equipment from overseas to US standards, logistics of dancers and rehearsals, curfew issues due to time change, weather, and more came into play.

Despite the number of events Eric has overseen, he never forgets where it all began. His college years are still some of his most favorite, with Delta Sig playing a large role.

“I fell in love with the place,” said Eric.

“I can’t say enough about how positive the fraternity experience was for me.”

A

nsel Adams once said “There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer.” The beauty of photography is in the narrative in creates, the story that the photographer is telling, and the experience the viewer is gaining. A single photo can provoke fear, create wonder, or imbue sympathy on the hardest hearts. A photograph is a story, frozen in time.

Tom Donoghue, University of Missouri ’68, understands the power of a photo better than most people.

At a young age, his father would take photos of Tom at his various sporting events. When it came time to hit the dark room and develop, Tom was there learning the tricks of the trade. Before long, he was behind the lens capturing moments himself.

Just down the street from the Donoghues lived the head of Public Relations for the Detroit Pistons. He invited Tom to try his hand at shooting a Pistons home game. That one game soon led to more, and soon he was shooting the Detroit Tigers home games as well. It was undoubtedly the best job for a sports-loving high school student.

Photography was becoming a way of life for Tom, and he knew he needed to expand his skills further. He left his home in Michigan to study photography at the University of Missouri. He quickly found himself as the photographer for the campus newspaper, The Maneater.

During his first years, Tom caught mono and landed in the hospital to recover. During his stay, he crossed paths was Spencer Rutledge. Spencer, a member of the Beta Beta chapter of Delta Sigma Phi on campus, immediately took a liking to Tom’s sense of humor.

He invited Tom to come meet him and the chapter for dinner.

“I felt a real bond, a real friendship with those guys,” said Tom. “They were people that really cared, and cared is the key word. If people really care about you then it doesn’t matter what people think about you, and I really felt that with the Fraternity.”

During his college years, Tom traveled to New York City to work a few shoots. During his time in the Big Apple, Tom met Ed Sullivan, and gifted him a Delta Sigma Phi mug and pen.

Since then, Tom has gifted Fraternitybranded goods to several celebrities.

He gave Hugh Downs a DSP whisky well, Michael Dan a 6' pledge paddle, and Burt Reynolds a football.

With the support of his chapter brothers behind him, Tom pushed even further into his craft. After graduation, Tom served as the lead photographer for the Hollywood Park Race Track.

From there, his career has taken him in almost every direction imaginable.

Tom has been shooting the biggest game of the NFL season since Super Bowl XXV. Photography of the big game was Tom’s first foray into major philanthropy efforts. He has been on-site shooting for every Super Bowl since on behalf of the Taste of the NFL program. He

auctions off his work at the dinner event the night before each Super Bowl. His work with them has gone on to raise over $100k used to combat hunger across the country.

His career portfolio contains far more than just moments from sports.

Tom has worked as an official photographer for the Republican Party.

He has gone back stage at concerts of every genre to shoot the biggest stars in music. Tom has even done work with high-profile events like the Miss America Pageant.

He never leaves home without his trusty Nikon.

“A photograph is an experience captured.” Tom’s slogan.

“When I look back, I think, have I really shot all of these photos?” said Tom. “I feel so fortunate to do what I do.”

Although he may not be as spry as when he started, Tom has no intention of ever leaving photography. For him, it is no longer about art, but sharing life.

“I have never enjoyed photography as much as I do now.”

BETA ALPHA RE-ESTABLISHED AT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY

When the new chapter began again back in the spring of 2014, they were fortunate enough to recruit a large base of over 60 men. Recruitment and new member education were the top priority for the chapter from the onset.

They spent a lot of time and effort developing and refining their recruitment process, making sure it reflected the values they held as a chapter.

The chapter drafted a list of what traits they wanted to see in their future recruits: drive for action, ability to follow through until completion, responsibility, and the ability to mesh with the men of the chapter.

With members in tow, the chapter sought to make an impact on the Iowa State campus. Modeled off of the actions of other Greek organizations, the men began participating in campus events like Greek Week and Homecoming.

Philanthropy became a core facet of the chapter’s initiatives as well.

To be the campus leaders in community service is a primary goal for Beta Alpha. Conducting a minimum of two philanthropic events each semester, the men have organized many events, like the Delta Sig Dog Days and a local 5k run in Des Moines. The chapter has two programs that are truly special to them: Lanterns of Love and Reggie’s Sleepover.

Lanterns of Love is a city-wide memorial service honoring the sacrifices of passed veterans. Reggie’s Sleepover, an event meant to raise awareness about homeless children, has the men pitching cardboard tents in the campus stadium.

In Ames, IA, alone, there are about 500 children without a home, giving the cause an extra urgency for the men.

On October 15th, the chapter received their charter in an event more

private than most. In lieu of inviting family and friends, the chapter chose to keep it personal, inviting only area alumni. Many of the local alumni did attend, and brought with them historical items and memorabilia from their time at the chapter. The men set out the items for all attendees to see, alongside a PowerPoint showcasing photos of the chapter’s men and events from across the years.

“The whole night was super high energy, everyone was super happy.

Some of the older members even started tearing up,” said Justin Bader, chapter president. “It was pretty emotional.”

also spoke during the chartering event.

“In 3 years, we went from meeting in any room we could find on campus to having a house we can call our own,” said Daniel Martin, chapter president when Beta Alpha received their charter.

“We aren’t done yet!”

With the charter in tow, Beta Alpha aims to continue to push for excellence at Iowa State. Community service and alumni engagement are top priorities, all while aiming to stay in the top three in academics on campus.

“We are trying to live by the Better Men, Better Lives motto,” said Justin Bader. “Throughout the time you are in Delta Sigma Phi, you should be becoming a better man. You should leave significantly better.”

CHARTERING IOTA NU AT THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK AT PLATTSBURGH

I

n the northernmost parts of New York, at the foot of the Adirondack Mountains and beside Lake Champlain, a new chapter began. The State University of New York at Plattsburgh began host to a group of men seeking to challenge the norm. That was the spring of 2015. By fall 2016, those same men would be receiving a charter.

Though it may have been quick, the road to chartering was a difficult one. The Iota Nu chapter sports a wide

array of men from different backgrounds: socially, economically, and even internationally. As they pushed towards chartering, the group struggled not only with meeting the requirements, the men of the Iota Nu chapter struggled to find common ground amongst themselves.

The men sat down together and drafted a list of values that they all shared – the values that would form the foundation of the chapter. Each word was chosen, defined, and

agreed upon by the collective. These words became the bond that grew between them all, no matter their personal history.

“It came down to building a culture driven by the question: who are we as Delta Sigs?” said Chapter President, Mike Kayigize. “This is something more continuous – more developmental.”

Last fall, they served a total of 439 service hours, then voted to raise their requirement of 10 hours to 15 hours. In addition they require 5 of the 15 service hours per semester be in service with the American Red Cross. Some of their time in the fall was spent installing 143 fire alarms in 51 homes with the American Red Cross.

New member education was a primary focus for the chapter as well. They worked to develop their own special new member education curriculum. The curriculum was a

resounding success, with other chapters drawing from it for their own use.

On the evening of Sept. 24, the chartering ceremony took place.

Being a new establishment, the event was smaller than most, but was not lacking in either impact or emotion.

John Knowles, Western Michigan University ’99, represented the Grand Council at the event, with Levi Smith, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis ’13, on hand as the national headquarters representative.

“It really felt like we had reached our goal,” said Mike Kayigize. “It was truly a joyous event!”

The evening’s speakers included: chapter members WillIam Hodge and Brandon Mitchell, Chapter Advisor, Dean Mike Morgan, Grand Council Member, John Knowles and Chapter President, Jacob Pasa.

ter has no plans to slow down. The men aim to keep their top academic position on campus. They also aim to raise a minimum of $1000 for the American Red Cross each semester, and have an attendee at every event hosted by the National Fraternity.

RECHARTERING ALPHA NU AT OGLETHORPE UNIVERSITY

I

n the fall of 2013, eight men set out to restore the ideals of the Better Man at Oglethorpe University. The Alpha Nu chapter had gone dormant, but it was time for the chapter to wake once more. Four years later, on Feb. 25th, that dream became a reality.

37 men now make up the newly rechartered Alpha Nu, with Junior Stephen Johnson at the helm as chapter President.

Oglethorpe University sports a vibrant Greek Life atmosphere.

Though re-establishment began with only 8 men, growth came quickly. The men who joined the re-establishment

effort were determined to make a splash. In the fall of 2015, the men of the chapter submitted their first bid for a charter.

The first submission resulted in the chapter being told that they weren’t quite ready yet. This blow struck the chapter deeply, but the news ultimately made the men even more resolute.

Stephen joined the chapter during this time, giving him the fuel to push the chapter further as president.

Fall 2016, the chapter submitted their application for chartering, and the request was accepted. The ultimate goal that the men had held for 4 years

had finally been achieved. Parents, friends and chapter alumni gathered on the night of the chartering ceremony to celebrate with the chapter. Grand Council Member, Jim Knoll, was on hand to award the charter.

“It was kind of odd, because we had always been trying to get here,” said Stephen. “But in one night, that journey ended.”

The event featured several speakers. Past Chapter President, Alex Attebery, made the trip from Washington D.C. to speak about the chapter’s journey to chartering. Jim Knoll spoke on behalf of the Grand Council. Stephen then spoke about the chapter’s future.

Not content to slow down, Alpha Nu is now pushing to become the largest Greek organization on campus. To help facilitate that growth, the chapter is currently working to acquire a chapter house. Not only

counting size, Alpha Nu is pushing for higher levels of academic achievement.

All of this aims to meet the chapter’s new ultimate goal: obtain a Pyramid of Excellence in 4 years.

Once the ceremony was over, the men of the chapter crowded around the charter itself. The men, who had retained composure through the evening, began to show their excitement in full. Crowded around the charter, the men joined arms and sang “The Emblem of the Delta Sigma Phi”. Each then took a turn finding their name on the charter, and taking a photo with it.

Oglethorpe University is known as a diverse campus. The Alpha Nu chapter believes that is ultimately their biggest strength as a whole.

Beta Kappa Chapter Named American Red Cross Partner of the Year BETA KAPPA CHAPTER – THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA Beakie Powell of the West Alabama Chapter of the American Red Cross works closely with the men of the Beta Kappa chapter. The chapter was recently named the 2016 Corporate Partner of the Year.

“The chapter at The University of Alabama has been a huge asset to the West Alabama Chapter of the American Red Cross. They have supported the Home Fire Campaign over the last two years, installing hundreds of smoke alarms into at-risk home and providing important fire safety information to residents.

Through their fundraising efforts they have donated over $20,000 to the local Red Cross chapter. Those funds support the mission of the Red Cross to help individuals in the face of disaster.

The young men of Delta Sigma Phi have been wonderful to work with, each one is a gentleman with high moral character. Their group has given back to the community of Tuscaloosa with their time and respect.

The National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) Distinguished Service award recognized an NSPE Licensed Member for exceptional contributions to the Engineering Profession, to one's community, and specifically to NSPE. It was first given in 1984, is given annually, and is not given every year.

Steven Bassett, Georgia Institute Of Technology ’64, was the most recent winner of this prestigious award.
