s this new decade is beginning, we are gearing up to make this the brightest era in our illustrious 120 year history. Though the Greek world may be facing a period of uncertainty and struggle, we are committed to ensuring that Delta Sigma Phi does not just survive, but thrives in the face of these trying times.

Sweeping changes have already begun all across Delta Sigma Phi. In January, we rolled out professional recruitment software to all of our chapters at no cost to them. In the same month, our brand new LEAD Weekend kicked off, providing the best training possible to select officers in our chapters – including brand new volunteer training through the Cycyota Volunteer Institute. On page 14, you will

Recruitment and education are the tools used to help find and cultivate the best men available at each of our chapters.

Education is the key to our future.

Training unlocks the potential of our members. That is why we are always looking for ways to improve our educational programs. We asked all Delta Sigs what they wanted from an educational program, and from that feedback came LEAD Weekend – the best chapter officer training program in Delta Sigma Phi history.

As you delve into this issue of The Carnation and read about what our incredible brothers are doing across the country, pay extra attention to the values that they are living. The more than 20 years of service Brother Justin Miller, New Mexico State ’94, has given to the pursuit of bettering our country.

Brothers like Eric Silver, Michigan ’19, who encouraged 21 of his Alpha Theta Chapter brothers to sign up for the national bone marrow registry.

These are just a few reasons why we are making changes all across our great Fraternity – to ever convince the world of the sincerity of our purpose. Building Better Men who live out our values is more critical now than ever before.

Strong chapter leaders are critical to our goal to become America’s Leading Fraternity. Those strong leaders aren’t always the ones in officer positions either.

The learning experience for our men does not stop once they finish their undergraduate experience. Continued education and growth is central to our ideals, and it is how we deviate from the norm. Our belief in this is why we place such an emphasis on creating learning opportunities. The Better Man never stops learning.

As part of our dedication to helping bring out the best in our members, we’re constantly looking for new resources and learning opportunities. Again, we asked you what you wanted from an online learning platform, and we have found a new partner to meet those needs. We are

rolling out brand new online education tools for all members with learning materials relevant to life after college.

Education is the cornerstone of everything we do as Delta Sigs. We hope you’ll continue to lend us your voice as we implement these new initiatives and create a strong educational foundation for future Brothers of Delta Sigma Phi.

After quick glances best murmured exchanges, the President exits a vehicle and begins to enter the now completely walled off by that same team. This is the most common kept image conjured by the record Service, but secret the truth is hardly ever as it seems.

Justin Miller, New Mexico State University ’94, knew from a young age what he wanted out of life. As the son of a police officer, he grew up knowing better than anyone what it meant to live a life of service. A life lived not for yourself, but for the good of every single person around you. To in the Justin entered the police academy after his high school graduation. He was 18 years old.

His parents knew that Justin had even more to offer than he had realized, and never stopped pushing Justin to go to college, even after he was already an officer. As an officer, Justin had an opportunity to work alongside members of the United State Secret Service. After the encounter, and with further encouragement from his father, Justin began to see what his parents had been telling him. He soon enlisted as a student at New Mexico State University with the Secret Service Agent.

One of Justin’s close friends knew the men of the chapter on campus, and told the chapter brothers all about him. With no hesitation, 7 chapter brothers made their way to Justin’s dorm room door and introduced themselves. Those Delta Sigs related they had a new pledge class of “non-traditional” students, and believed Justin would fit well with those in the group who had served too before attending college. His people had found him.

This is the most common mental image conjured by the mention of the Secret Service, but the truth is hardly ever as it seems.

Justin Miller, New Mexico State ’94, knew from a young age what he wanted out of life. As the son of a police officer, he grew up knowing better than anyone what it meant to live a life of service. A life lived not for yourself, but for the good of every single person around you. To that end, Justin entered the police academy after his high school graduation.

As an officer, Justin had an opportunity to work alongside members of the United State Secret Service. After the encounter, and with further encouragement from his father, Justin began to see what his parents had been telling him. He soon enlisted as a student at New Mexico State University with the goal of becoming a Secret Service Agent.

The Secret Service recruits talented and trustworthy people. It is extremely selective, and for good reason. The image of the job is not the reality of the career that requires lengthy time away from home for both protective and investigative operations. It’s not a typical career, and as a history major with a career in law enforcement, Justin was far from your typical college freshman.

However, that is exactly what drew the men of the Eta Chi Chapter to knock on his door.

With no hesitation, 7 chapter brothers made their way to Justin’s dorm room door and introduced themselves. Those Delta Sigs related they had a new pledge class of “non-traditional” students, and believed Justin would fit well with those in the group who had served too before attending college. His people had found him.

What truly sold Justin on Delta Sigma Phi was the chapter’s commitment to service. The men were active in their duty to better their campus, their community, and each other.

Justin said, “My intuition told me this group was motivated and focused, and those guys that came to my door have gone on to be great men, husbands and fathers, as well as others in my pledge class at NMSU.”

After 3 years as an undergraduate, Justin spent 2 years working towards his Master’s in U.S. History and American Diplomacy, with an emphasis on U.S. East Asian Relations.

“Understanding diplomacy through a historical perspective proved extremely valuable for me during foreign assignments,” says Brother Miller.

In Secret Service training, Justin found himself surrounded by people just like himself. His academy class had a former PE teacher, an attorney, and other law enforcement and military members, all coming together for a common cause of service, “to protect

and defend the constitution of the United States,” Justin said “The diverse hiring was fantastic, no matter what the scenario, somebody had an experience or training that could benefit the group or situation. I saw ordinary people, being trained to do extraordinary things if ever necessary.”

When people envision a member of the Secret Service, a surly face obscured by sunglasses on top of a pitch black suit is always the image.

While this is sometimes the case, Justin found himself doing far more than protection during his 20 year career.

“You’re on the sidelines of history,” said Justin.

Justin has worked on the security detail for every living president, and spends several weeks at a time protecting foreign dignitaries who travel to the United States. However, this work has accounted for less than half of his current Secret Service tenure.

The Secret Service was originally created in 1865 as a wing of the United States Department of the Treasury. The legislation that created the service was on Abraham Lincoln’s desk the night he was assassinated. Money counterfeiting was running rampant across the country, and the Secret Service was the measure taken to protect the economy.

It was not until 1901, with the Assassination of President McKinley that the Secret Service was directed to protect the President of the United States full time. Until 2003, the Secret Service pursued a dual mission of protection and investigations within the Treasury Department, when it was moved to the Department of Homeland Security.

Though this move to the Department of Homeland Security has added to the job description, the Secret Service is still in the business of investigating financial crimes, which has evolved at a frenetic pace with the help of computers and their networks.

Justin has spent a majority of his time in the service on task forces pertaining to this side of the agency’s duties.

His work as the group supervisor for an electronic crimes task force involved investigations into several high profile data breaches, travel to several different countries, and provided the prerequisite knowledge for his most recent assignment.

Tracking down cyber criminals and protecting high-value persons requires quite a bit of travel, which does not leave much time for family. After 20 years in other roles, Justin stumbled upon the role he described as the “Best Kept Secret in the Secret Service”.

The Alabama State District Attorney’s Association partnered with the Secret Service to create the National Computer Forensics Institute (NCFI) in Hoover, AL, to train state and local law enforcement entities how to investigative cyber-crimes, to properly collect electronic/digital evidence, and potentially catch cyber-criminals. With his plethora of experience in many roles, few agents were as qualified for the positon as Justin.

For the past several months, Justin has been teaching network investigations to numerous law enforcement personnel at the NCFI. He has stable hours, continues to serve his country and local community and hasn’t missed one of his children’s numerous events. Justin said, “I’ve missed a lot of firsts, and I am thankful to have this new position giving me some personal stability.”

Justin recently decided to further his ability as a teacher by going back to get his Masters in Information Security Operations. He applied for, and won, the Sphinx Scholarship through the McKee Scholarship Program.

and community continues to shine in his career. Even in their personal lives, the entire Miller family volunteers their time through their church and other community based organizations.

Justin credits his wife, Amorette, (a cancer survivor who he met during a Bill Clinton Rally at NMSU) as the exceptional role model for him and his children. “She sees the good in everything, and as a school psychologist, she is helping students see their value, just as so many did for me.”

Both professionally and personally, Brother Miller has had one core tenant: service.

He now hopes he can continue to lead as an example of what a Man of Action can achieve.

“There is good that can come from service,” said Justin.

NEW CHAPTER \ UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA, TWIN CITIES Brothers from Epsilon Iota Chapter (UW-La Crosse), Zeta Xi Chapter (St. Cloud), and Eta Omicron Chapter (UW-Eau Claire) came together to initiate our newest Brothers at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.

ETA OMICRON \ UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-EAU CLAIRE The Eta Omicron Chapter at the University of Wisconsin participated in the annual Adopt-a-Block event. The event has student groups take care of cleaning up blocks of the campus after the Homecoming weekend festivities have come to a close.

"It's really awesome to see students give back to the community they live in and sometimes abuse and don’t really recognize it,” said UW-Eau Claire Student Senator and Delta Sigma Phi fraternity member, Austin Gulbrandson, UW-Eau Claire ’18.

says the clean-up efforts give students the opportunity to come together in support of the community.

"It feels pretty great especially to kind of get everyone together, get different organizations on campus and really come together as a community to make this a better place,” Speiss said.

GAMMA XI \ UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS Alumni of the Gamma Xi Chapter at University of North Texas gathered this past November to celebrate the chapter’s 67th birthday. Established in 1952, the Gamma Xi chapter has been active for all 67 years and looks forward to many more.

EPSILON LAMBDA \ NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY The Epsilon Lambda Chapter participated in the tradition of cleaning up the school tailgate lot the morning after home games.

They believe that the lot should be kept clean for community use, as well as to keep their campus looking nice for visitors.

This year for homecoming, the school started a new contest to see which organization could recycle the most. With recyclable material mostly collected from the tailgate lot, the chapter got first place recycling around 1,370 pounds of material!

DELTA OMICRON \ WESTERN CAROLINA UNIVERSITY The Delta Omicron Chapter at Western Carolina University celebrated their 60th anniversary at their homecoming last fall.

ALPHA PI \ MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY The Alpha Pi Chapter at Michigan State celebrated 97 years of continuous operation.

This is largely in part due to the efforts of Rick Van Dresser, Michigan State ’76.

ETA OMICRON \ UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-EAU CLAIRE The Eta Omicron Chapter, UWEau Claire, celebrated 30 years since chartering.

IOTA ETA \ IUPUI The Iota Eta Chapter at IUPUI raised an unbelievable $28,477 for the Alzheimer’s Association during their annual Queen of the Nile philanthropy event! They raised

over $55,000 total for various charities in all of 2019!

EPSILON BETA \ UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN, OSHKOSH On Nov. 10th, members participated in a 20-mile veterans suicide awareness march in Green Bay, WI, to raise money for 4th HOOAH WI, and to raise awareness to the fact that 20 veterans commit suicide a day.

ALPHA THETA \ UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN 21 men of the Alpha Theta Chapter at the University of Michigan committed to saving lives by joining the national bone marrow registry. The chapter hosted the drive that also registered several other students. Brother Eric Silver, Michigan ’19, helped make the event a reality.

RECENTLY CHARTERED San Diego State University The Gamma Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity was chartered on November 9, 2019. The chartering banquet was postponed out of respect to an IFC community member who passed away days before the scheduled banquet. The chapter hopes to be a positive influence in their community and strives to win a Pyramid of Excellence award in the near future.

University of Texas at Tyler The Iota Pi Chapter of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity was chartered on Saturday, November 16, 2019.

In attendance was UT Tyler’s Greek Affairs Coordinator, Rob Smith, and Director of Student Engagement, Joshua Neaves. The chapter continues to be a role model on their campus, and it won’t be long before they set a new standard for Delta Sigma Phi undergraduate chapters.

NEW CHAPTER DEVELOPMENTS (FALL 2019) niversity of Minnesota U In September 2019, Delta Sigma Phi welcomed students to start a new chapter at the University of Minnesota. The new chapter’s first president is Gavin Murphy, and they are being advised by a volunteer team led by Fernando Lesniak, St. Cloud ’10, and Jason DeKeuster, UW-Eau Claire ’95.

University of Massachusetts, Amherst This past fall, Delta Sigma Phi reestablished the Theta Pi Chapter at the University of Massachusetts’ flagship campus. The Theta Pi Chapter was originally chartered in 1998, and a new group of 15 men will be building their fraternity experience on campus this year.

Western Michigan University The storied Beta Tau Chapter returned to campus this past fall. With 30 new members, the chapter becomes the ninth active chapter in the state of Michigan.

The new chapter’s first president is Matthew Schuster. A number of alumni from across the state are helping guide the chapter, led by ACB President, Bryce Miller, Western Michigan ’92.

University of Cincinnati Delta Sigma Phi was invited to campus for the first time in September 2019. 15 new members began the task of creating their Delta Sigma Phi experience on campus in January, advised by Tom Wible, Ohio Northern ’02, and Chris Wrobel, Ohio State ’14.

SPRING 2020 CAMPAIGNS Pennsylvania State University The Epsilon Chapter returned to campus this spring after a year of partnership and planning between the university, alumni, and national office. Delta Sigma Phi’s Growth Team recruited more than 40 men to kick-off the return of the Epsilon chapter.

North Carolina State University The Rho Chapter returned to campus with support from the Rho ACB and a newly engaged advisory team. Delta Sigma Phi’s Growth Team identified 40 men to restart the chapter following a three-year closure.

University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill The Alpha Delta Chapter returned this spring after a brief restart was organized by key alumni. In collaboration with the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life, Delta Sigma Phi’s Growth Team recruited 15 men to launch a new era for this historic chapter.

California State University, San Marcos For the first time, Delta Sigma Phi has been invited to start a chapter at CSUSM. At the time of printing, Delta Sigma Phi’s Growth Team just arrived on campus to recruit the founding members of our newest chapter.

Actual full-functioning mini communities made up of leaders and citizens working together to ensure the longevity and success of their membership. And just like anyother community, training and education are behind the betterment of leaders.

After research and feedback from our members, LEAD Weekend was born. This two-day regional training program offers positional training and education while allowing all attendees to create a plan that improves their chapter’s recruitment and retention efforts, mitigates risk, and creates a positive membership experience.

Chapters were assigned to one of the five LEAD Weekend locations based on proximity and campus culture. The Fraternity covers all expenses for undergraduates to attend.

Chapter Presidents continue to attend the stand-alone Presidents Academy, but can attend LEAD alongside their fellow of­fi cers in order to compile a complete chapter action plan for the remainder of the year.

THE HARMONY OF OUR LETTERS

The young students who founded the Fraternity in 1899 understood the

essence of a social fraternity’s identity is its Greek letter name. After the organizers exhaustively analyzed the secret messages they wanted the name to signify for the members, they chose three Greek letters: Delta, Sigma and Phi. To members, the letters form the most melodious name among all fraternities, but that was not the chief attribute the first Delta Sigs wanted. They chose the letters to represent the special meanings the fledgling group attached to them. The name is virtually priceless because it expresses the Fraternity’s principles.

A

fter the Fraternity announced its Greek letters, it had to fight for years to keep them. The lilting sequence of the letters Delta, Sigma and Phi, always poetry to the ears of Delta Sigs, also proved the favorite of other people.

Early in 1912, the students of Mu Chapter in Chicago discovered a college sorority was using the Fraternity’s name.

The sorority had chapters at several campuses in the area, and their national organization called itself Delta Sigma Phi Sorority. It claimed right of first use because the sorority was formed in 1903, and Mu Chapter dated from 1910. But the students of Mu convinced the women the Fraternity’s rights originated in 1899 when the National Fraternity was established. The sorority changed its name, and the groups exchanged invitations to their parties.

During the easy money times of the Roaring Twenties, the energetic collegiate lifestyle captured the imagination of the public. Fraternities and sororities were portrayed in romantic terms in national magazines, popular music and films. Some people admired their exuberance and elegance, and quite a few adults wished they had the same exciting lifestyle. This aura of glamor

prompted a wide assortment of organizations, including high school clubs, local college fraternities, and newly formed national fraternities and sororities, to use a Greek-letter name. All too many times, Delta Sigma Phi’s unique combination of letters was the title they appropriated. Several dozen misappropriations indicated the name seemed to be the most popular combination of Greek letters.

Greek letter names were so popular in the Roaring Twenties that many non-college groups, from flappers to bootleggers, used Greek letters to affect a veneer of style. The right of first use and the impracticality of taking another’s name often did not persuade them to stop. The rash of infringements seemed never ending, and the misuse also extended to the shortened term, Delta Sig.

Even commercial enterprises liked the name, and several of them tried to make a profit from it. In 1921, Delta Sig’s national officers learned an impostor called itself Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. It was not a college society, and it did not restrict admission to college men. Its business was selling the name, embossed on counterfeit membership certificates, to any man willing to pay it for the prestige the name provided. For additional money, it also sold its customers a Delta Sig membership badge. Delta Sigma Phi sued in two separate courts. One of them ruled the pretender fraudulently

profited by misrepresenting itself as the Fraternity, and it enjoined the misuse.

No longer able to pilfer the Fraternity’s distinction, the bogus fraternity changed its name to Deltasigma. It began to sell badges and membership certificates under that name, but the shady operator lost its cachet when it had no claim to Delta Sigma Phi. The fake fraternity soon faded away.

At the time, non-profit organizations like fraternities could not obtain trademarks for the intangible benefits they provided their members, rewards such as camaraderie, social identity and educational encouragement. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and courts ruled that trademarks could be enforced only for tangible products sold for profit. This left the Greek letters and the name, standing alone, vulnerable to appropriation. The Fraternity was dependent upon the mercy of a court that might or might not find unfair use of its marks.

Unable to obtain a trademark, Delta Sigma Phi copyrighted its name in 1921, when it appeared in the national magazine. It also copyrighted its coat of arms in 1925, including the various symbols encrusted on its surface. But, as limited by the law, the protection applied to the Greek letters only when they appeared either on a tangible item that could be sold or in its publications. This enabled the Fraternity to license its insignia to vendors who produced items such as Delta Sig jewelry, paddle boards and clothing. The marketing companies paid the Fraternity small royalties from the sale of these items.

In 1926, Delta Sig’s national officers learned a group in Indianapolis was using the name of Delta Sigma Phi. A district governor who was an attorney visited the group at Butler College and discovered it was a local fraternity. Faced with a lawsuit, the local agreed to change its name by rearranging the letters into another sequence.

In 1928, an advertisement appeared in a national publication with the Greek letters, Delta Sigma Phi. The ad promoted Goodyear Rubber Company’s new rubber heels, and Goodyear touted them as a great improvement. Goodyear had not obtained permission from the Fraternity, but Delta Sigma Phi did not object to the favorable public-

ity. When Delta Sig’s national officers contacted Goodyear, it sent the original artwork to the Delta Sig office, without any explanation. It omitted any payment.

Meyer Boskey, one of the two co-founders, came to Delta Sigma Phi’s rescue in 1930. When he learned a local fraternity at Otterbein College in Ohio was using the name, he wrote to it on his law office stationery. The local changed its name by rearranging the letters. Even now, it uses its altered name, together with an image of the Great Sphinx.

When offenders refused to change, the Fraternity asserted its rights in court. R. Guy Smith of Eta Chapter, the Fraternity’s volunteer attorney, directed the legal battles. He reported, “Probably the most presumptuous and insulting offense was the misuse of our whole Fraternity name for a full-blown and vicious night club.”

Exasperated, Smith calculated the number of three-letter combinations that could be derived from the 24 letters of the Greek alphabet. He concluded it was possible to arrange 13,824 different names using three Greek letters. The plethora of alternatives left him wondering why so many groups persisted in using the Fraternity’s name. For Delta Sigs, the answer was clear. The Fraternity’s particular combination of Greek letters produced more melodic sounds than others.

Delta Sigma Phi’s copyrights and trademarks ended the onslaught against it in the 1930s. But some other Greek-letter societies had to persistently defeat opportunists. Continuing appropriation by identity pirates prompted 32 of the largest fraternities and sororities to file a series of court cases against a dozen Greek-letter vendors in 2007. Altogether, the 32 societies spent several hundred thousand dollars in legal fees before a federal appeals court confirmed their exclusive rights to their own names in 2013. Based on the reality that the marks of a Greek-letter society motivate sales of its products, the court ruling recognizes Greekletter groups have sole rights to their English name, Greek letters, nicknames and symbols, even when they are not on an object.

Unlike the early years when Delta Sigma Phi had to persuade judges on disputed claims of fairness, fraternities and sororities can now rely on courts to directly recognize their property rights against identity thieves. The melodic notes in the name Delta Sigma Phi will continue their beautiful music.

Henry Pollack, Cleveland State ’68 I worked for the Air Force for 40 years, while at the same time I was blessed to have with me a very tolerant wife and six, more intelligent than I, children (three boys, three girls). I retired in 2012, from a very rewarding career as the landing gear and mechanical equipment technical expert. I worked on nearly all of the aircraft presently in service and some additional A/C for Israel and Korea.

Since then, I have completed some consulting work on the T-6 trainer A/C and consulted for the University of Dayton engineering department.

After active duty during Vietnam, I worked for the Army, Navy, and Air Force for 26 years as a civilian federal employee, retiring in 1993. I set up a company specializing in professional development and training for civilian and military personnel in the Department of Defense, principally in the area of finance, accounting, and law. My wife and I have traveled extensively over the past ten years, throughout Europe and the far East, often in conjunction with teaching and consulting for the Department of Defense.

During the last three years working for the Navy, I traveled to Guam, Okinawa, South Korea, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and England as well as many states in the US (including Alaska) upgrading network equipment in commissaries.

What’s the most rewarding part about attending these programs with the members? I love seeing how connecting in person with other members helps chapter leaders and volunteers alike.

The Delta Sig brotherhood runs deep, and members share solutions, network, commiserate, and celebrate together and it fills my heart!

We sat down with Kristin Fouts, Director of Educational Initiatives, and Brittany Ankeny-Dooley, Assistant Director of Educational Programs, to find out what’s in their bag? With both of their roles calling for some heavy travel, organization and planning is key to their success.

How have the educational initiatives of Delta Sigma Phi changed since you first started in your role?

We really value listening to our members – young and “seasoned” – to identify how to make our curriculum and resources more useful and timely.

I love checklists – physically checking off tasks makes me feel more productive.

I make them for what I need to pack, logistics to finalize, and notes for my husband and kids while I'm gone.

What’s the one item you see repeatedly left behind by attendees? Workbooks!

They are a participant’s best record of his experience – his goals and reflections, others' contact info, etc., so we hate knowing he’s back home without it. We often try to mail them back.

I live my life on lists and post-it notes.

I do the same thing when planning our educational programs – a list of what needs to be done before, what materials are needed, what participants need to pack, and what needs to be done after the program. It helps me feel less overwhelmed to break it all down. Plus I can visually see how much or how little I have left to do.

What’s the most rewarding part about attending these programs with the members?

I really enjoy watching members evolve in a weekend timeframe – so much can change in 48 hours! To see the wheels turn, the concepts click, and hearing that learning a concept made members feel more confident in their role, that is my whole goal.

How have the educational initiatives of Delta Sigma Phi changed since you first started in your role? I think it has been most amazing to see how the regional programming has drastically changed.

What’s the one item you see repeatedly left behind by attendees? WORKBOOKS!!

I know not everyone learns by writing/journaling but I always try to design workbooks so that they have information/resources/ articles that will be helpful after the program you attend.

t each LEAD Weekend session, we unveiled multiple new partnerships that will propel Delta Sigma Phi into the 21st Century.

We announced our new partnerships with Chapterspot and Billhighway | greekbill, Lessonly and Chapterbuilder. These operational solutions are integrated with a centralized database that will be known as MyDeltaSig.org beginning August 1st, 2020. These new digital tools will provide greater resources, training, data and support to our undergraduate and alumni brothers alike.

By making these investments in our membership, we are making great strides to accomplish our goal of being America’s Leading Fraternity. Be on the lookout for more information about these new initiatives in the coming months.
