Bilbrey, Hallett Named Career Achievement Recipients

T

wo of the best among better men--Dean Hallett, Southern California ‘77, and John “J.P.” Bilbrey, Kansas State ‘76, received one of the Fraternity’s rarest awards during the 2013 Convention on the first and last day, respectively. Hallett is Executive Vice President, Operations and Strategy and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for Fox Filmed Entertainment (FFE), where he is a key member of the executive team and is instrumental in shaping the overall strategy of the studio. He provides strategic direction and operational guidance to all FFE divisions including theatrical production, worldwide theatrical marketing and distribution, worldwide home entertainment, television distribution, digital exhibition and digital media. He aligns and optimizes resources while providing guidance to each of the studio divisions as they integrate digital product offerings into day-to-day operations. Hallett also oversees strategic planning and business development, technology research and engineering, studio and postproduction operations, information technology and finance. Brothers Hallett and Bilbrey each inspired the Delta Sigs, friends and spouses in attendance with a keynote address. Dean Hallett took to the lectern during the Awards Luncheon. He addressed the question, “What drives career success?” Hallett encouraged the audience to focus on three core ideas: culture, authenticity and the power of networking. As a key member of the executive teams at both Disney and Fox, he brought an

air of humility and confidence to his keynote address. His speech, crafted and adapted specifically for the event, had a profound impact on many of those in attendance. Members stood patiently around the Grand Ballroom as Hallett took the time to speak to each individually. During the Closing Banquet, John “J.P.” Bilbrey became the second Delta Sig in three days to take home the coveted award. Earlier that day Bilbrey delivered his keynote address about the tenants of leadership he embraced since his days as an undergraduate at Kansas State. Bilbrey fascinated the audience with his stories about the lessons he learned, as well as the past and future of confectionary goods. Those in attendance enjoyed REESE’S chocolates brought by the CEO. J.P. ascended to the top office at Hershey through a lifetime of dedication. During his career, he has worked and lived in more than 50 countries in North America, North Africa and Asia. He is now guiding the growth and expansion of Hershey’s global business, particularly in China, Mexico, and Brazil. Delta Sigma Phi could not be more proud to count Hallett and Bilbrey among the brothers of this great Fraternity. Each has proven that a fraternity man and a Delta Sig is equipped with the tools to climb to the very top of their respective industry. What an honor it was to have two of the best among better men with us in Phoenix. We thank them for repaying the debt just as each and every one of our donors do!

Appreciated Securities as a Donation Did you know that the Delta Sigma Phi Foundation accepts appreciated stock as a tax deductible gift? This can be a “winwin” for any donor who is worried about paying capital gains. You could donate any publically traded stock to the Delta Sig Foundation, receive a tax deduction for the gift, avoid paying capital gains on the appreciated stock, and make a contribution that will help Delta Sig meet its mission of Building Better Men. In addition, alumni who are 70 ½ or older are allowed to contribute up to $100,000 from an individual retirement account (IRA) directly to the Delta Sigma Phi Foundation without recognizing the assets transferred as income until December 02

31, 2013. The contribution can be counted as part of your annual minimum withdrawal but the donor is not eligible to receive a tax deduction. This method of giving is perfect for individuals who do not need money from their IRA but are required to withdraw the minimum annual amount and want to help the Delta Sig Foundation. Although you don’t receive a tax deduction, you also don’t pay taxes on the amount withdrawn! To learn how you can take advantage of this opportunity, please contact Nathan Wight, Chief Advancement Officer, at wight@deltasig.org or 317-6341899 x463.

Fraternity Announces New RLA Structure Delta Sig Restructures RLAs to Make Them More Accessible

F

ollowing up from our announcement at Convention, we would like to officially introduce you, our valued donors, and your chapters to our refreshed Regional Leadership Academy. The RLA will now be held on multiple campuses throughout the academic year. Why the change? We felt that the previous RLA structure prevented some chapters from participating, and forced those who did participate to travel long distances. As a valued donor, we understand that many of you are more than happy to help out with travel costs, but we want you to be able to utilize your gifts in a different fashion. With the new RLA, travel time and expenses should be greatly reduced. Also, the information being discussed at the RLA could use a refresh, so we are going to offer new programming that will better engage our members, and allow more opportunities for chapters to work with other chapters. We will personalize the conversation to meet your chapter’s needs, while offering leadership and operations training that will strengthen our Fraternity’s leaders. Here are some details about this year’s Regional Leadership Academies: • Who is invited? Any chapter member is invited to attend, but this program is highly recommended for chapter officers and chairmen. While we do not have a separate “alumni track” we feel that chapter advisors will offer unique contributions to the program. We absolutely want to see as many advisors make the trip as possible. • How many people can attend? Chapters should initially plan on having 10-15 members attend. Each RLA will have a maximum capacity.

• How much will this event cost? The RLA has been paid for by each chapter’s “Educational Programming Fee”. There are no programming costs associated with attending, outside of possible travel/lodging. • When is the RLA? Below you will find the Fall 2013 RLA Schedule. Each event will include an Executive Board Roundtable on Friday evening, allowing executive officers from different chapters to meet for an open dialogue about fraternity leadership. RLA programming will begin Saturday morning and conclude around 5 p.m.
