DELTA SIGS IN THE MILITARY

For years, this publication tracked our brothers who either volunteered or were drafted into military service. As a National Fraternity, we take tremendous pride in the work our brothers do for the world and would like to extend a special thanks to those who fought for their country. In each issue we will continue to highlight brothers who have served. Tell us your story or provide the name of a brother or brothers who have served by emailing us at communications@deltasig.org.

Serving in the military is a great way to help others and be a part of a renowned organization that is committed to excellent values and courtesies.

What did you like most about your past positions?

I really enjoyed taking care of soldiers in their biggest time of need. Successfully turning someone’s “bad day” into a “better day” is an amazing feeling.

What has been the biggest lesson you have learned because of your service?

There are a lot of opinions out there from people that judge and support your cause. If you believe in what you do and stay morally and ethically in tune then the negative criticism won’t bother or affect you as much.

I am a medic on the 934th Forward Surgical Team (FST). I aid in providing far forward emergency resuscitative care for soldiers injured on the battlefield. When not providing treatment I maintain the unit’s inventory of supplies and equipment.

Why did you join?

I joined the military to provide some structure to my life and help me pay for school. I was going through a rough patch at home and needed an escape.

So I joined the army and got into the medical field in which I hope to pursue a career as a doctor. My grandfather also served as well as my brother-in-law and I look up to them both.

Why do you believe it is important to serve?

I believe it is important to realize that there is more to life than just yourself.

How did your membership in Delta Sigma Phi relate to your role in the Army?

Delta Sigma Phi gave me my first real opportunity to lead a group of people and strive to reach a common goal. It also taught me how to communicate more effectively. That is imperative in not only the Army but in healthcare in general.

After the military I am currently working toward getting into medical school to become an Army surgeon. I would like to retire from the military knowing I was able to do good in the world.

The Evolution of the Flag

elta Sigs clamored in 1905 for more symbols to distinguish the Fraternity. Charles Tonsor, one of the co-founders of the Fraternity and still a student at New York University, hastened to develop suggestions. He presented the design of a flag to the students and young alumni who attended the constitutional convention in 1905.

The delegates adopted it as the first official flag of the Fraternity.

That year, 22 year-old Meyer Boskey, the other co-founder, described the first flag. It consisted only of “Nile Green letters on a White ground,” he

wrote in the 1905 constitution.

Despite the enthusiasm for the official flag, it was never made into an actual banner. The expense was likely more than the early members could afford.

The flag had a simple but elegant appearance. Not until 1906 did Tonsor conceive the circle and triangle configuration that became the new member

symbol. Thus the geometrical form used for the pin had no place on the 1905 flag.

Starting in 1914, World War I interrupted fraternity life in the United States. Even that early, some Delta Sig students and recent graduates voluntarily joined the battles in Europe. In 1917, when the United States entered the war, nearly three-fourths of Delta Sig’s young men served in the Armed Forces. Many chapters closed for lack of membership. The others struggled on with only a few students.

By the time ex-servicemen returned to their campuses in 1919 or 1920, the current Delta Sigs had little knowledge of the Fraternity’s beginnings. They did not study the constitution, which had been updated six times, always with a description of the official flag as white with Nile green letters.

Demonstrating a lack of institutional memory, the 1923 convention directed a committee be appointed to fill the perceived gap.

Two and a half years after the flag committee was formed, it had made no suggestions. Bob Ashley, a young member of the national board and editor of the Carnation, decided it was time to act. At a meeting of the board, he drew a rough sketch of a flag. His plan had a green field with the circle and triangle of the new member symbol in the center. The gold dividing lines were omitted, and green lines were substituted in their places. The year 1899 was emblazoned in the middle in large Arabic numbers. The full board promptly

approved the concept in 1927 as the official fraternity flag. Wisely, the board had the pattern copyrighted.

The national fraternity required chapters to have the official flag in their possession, and to use it rather than any of their own hand-sewn creations. They could purchase the flag from the central office for $25.

Members first saw the actual flag when it was available for purchase in 1926, and many of them complained it tainted the purity of the circle and triangle.

The Board of Governors heeded the criticisms during its annual meeting in 1927 and deleted the numerals. As soon as members saw the revision, they concluded it was better— but not by much. Some members thought the white circle and triangle on a green background looked like a target board with a bull’s-eye in the center.

During the 1930s, people suffered from the economic shortages caused by the Great Depression. Many alumni members had to take pay cuts to keep their jobs. Student members often had to take a part-time job or drop out of school. In the environment of deprivations and anxiety, members remained loyal to Delta Sigma Phi but they did not have time or inspiration to conceive new fraternity emblems.

Financial circumstances improved slightly in 1939. An unknown member, probably one of the board members, modified the 1927 flag. The revision of 1939 featured a replica of the new member symbol in the center, but it

differed from the actual pin. Again, the green triangle was subdivided into three smaller triangles by darker green lines rather than gold edgings.

Members considered the 1939 flag another improvement, but it had a major shortcoming. It did not identify the Fraternity for non-members.

Several chapters suggested alternative models. In 1948, Hilgard Chapter at the University of California, Berkeley offered a unique alternative. Someone sewed a prototype. This concept had a white rectangle near the top of the flag.

Within that block of white, the Hilgard students outlined the circle in a band of green. Inside the circle, they inserted a green triangle. It too was subdivided by darker green lines. For the first time since the forgotten flag of 1905, the sample had Greek letters. They were added in white, spread diagonally just as Tonsor had placed them.

Chapters continued to suggest additional examples. In 1948, the Louisiana Tech Chapter splayed large Greek letters at three separate points around a smaller, embroidered coat of arms. The coat of arms was presented in various shades of gold, omitting its other colors. This flag had limited use.

Another unknown member made a similar pattern early in 1949. This one

had a white field with the circle and triangle in the center. As before, the solid green triangle was subdivided by dark green lines. The Greek letters were positioned around the exterior of the circle. This flag was used only briefly.

It was displayed later in 1949 during a banquet of the Chicago alumni chapter and at Furman University when Pi Chapter was revived there in December that year.

Preparations for the 50th anniversary of the Fraternity in 1949 prompted the national board to try again to produce a satisfactory flag. Chapters were rebuilding from the disruptions of World War II, and the process was delayed. The official flag of 1939 was still in use at the 50th anniversary convention in 1949.

After the anniversary passed, the Board of Governors remembered its long-time fraternity supplier, L.G. Balfour Company, specialized in making and selling fraternal symbols. Balfour’s artists quickly presented a proposed design in 1950. The board adopted it as soon as the drawing was presented.

flag positioned a faithful reproduction of the new member symbol in the upper left quadrant. Opposite it, large Greek letters descended in a diagonal line from left to right. The field of the flag was green, and the letters were white.

According to a rule adopted in 1925, every chapter was required to purchase the official flag. They were to display it on Founders’ Day, the chapter’s chartering date, and on all other “occasions of interest to the Fraternity.”

In recent years, unlicensed vendors have sold other versions of the flag. These unauthorized flags omit the gold trim of the new member symbol, and they display the letters in gold rather than white.

The 1950 flag is the Fraternity’s fifth official standard, and it remains the official flag of the Fraternity. The

emblem is more significant than those words indicate. It is a historic combination of concepts contributed by generations of members. With the symbolism captured in the new member symbol,

the flag is more than an emblem of identification. It represents the ideals and values of Delta Sigma Phi. It is the standard that unites all Delta Sigs under one banner.

Centerpoint Brewing INDIANAPOLIS, IN

In an industrial-looking off-shoot right outside of downtown Indianapolis, three Delta Sigs have made a haven for thirsty explorers. Before you even park your vehicle, you can start to see what sets Centerpoint Brewing apart. The metallic structure hints at mechanical precision. Once you step through the doors, you are greeted by a modern, yet comfortable, tap room that houses their finely-crafted brews.

That first experience paints a perfect picture of what these Rose-

Centerpoint Brewing is owned and operated by a trio of men from the Zeta Lambda Chapter at Rose-Hulman: Jonathan Robinson ’99, Pete Argiris ’98, and Jeff Ready ’93. Centerpoint uses their name as a central philosophy for their beer. You won’t find any hopbomb IPAs or a wheat beer with more

adjectives than ingredients. Instead, they seek to strike the core idea of the style, and execute it with the best inherent flavors possible.

It all began with what is now known as Centerpoint Gold – their Kölsch, self-described as “tasting like beer”. Robinson and Argiris were home brewing buddies for years after graduation, both men working as engineers.

Upon finding success at homebrewing competitions with the recipe for Centerpoint Gold, the duo began to take beer seriously.

Robinson and Argiris had the engineering skills to build their equipment and scale their recipes for mass-production, but they needed someone to bring some business savvy to get them going. The pair had met Ready at alumni events previously, and knew he had prior success with start-ups. They brought their business plan to him for review, and Ready asked if he could join their ranks as a third co-founder.

Before long, the founding fathers of Centerpoint were refining their business plan and crafting a full tap list.

There was an innate sameness from their shared experience as Delta Sigs, which allowed them to mesh easily as business partners.

Their home taproom in Indianapolis features any number of the 30+ distinct beers they brew over the course of a year, but four grace their taps as their core samplings. These four are: Centerpoint Gold, Centerpoint Black (an American Porter), Centerpoint Red IPA, and Centerpoint White IPA.

Centerpoint is not just a name, but the core of the company culture. They brew beers to the center of the style.

Brewing itself is an engineered process, and the team aims to always be at the center of the brewing process.

Finally, they want to make their location a focal point of the community.

Howdy Homemade DALLAS, TX

Few treats manage to cut through the Texas heat like ice cream. Few people understand this truth quite like this Delta Sig. After opening 13 other successful restaurants, he was looking to do something fresh. To him, his newest venture is not about the food, but the people.

Tom Landis, University of Texas at Austin ’88, opened Howdy Homemade with the goal of doing something that has never been done before. This specialty ice cream parlor is run entirely by employees with Down Syndrome and Autism. His ironclad conviction to put people before the food led him to this idea, and it is what has pushed Howdy Homemade forward from the start.

“While other businesses are more

of a hand-out, we are a hand up,” said Landis. “We are not just about making money, but pioneering change.”

Howdy Handmade is making waves for more reasons than their community outreach. Every flavor of ice cream is made in-house with fresh, natural ingredients. The team serves up more than just ice cream; however, with cookies, candies and more to accompany your favorite scoops.

The signature flavor is their famous Dr Pepper Chocolate Chip ice cream, developed by Landis himself after months of hard work. He even has a Hot Tamales® flavor for those who prefer a hit of cinnamon sweet.

Landis first stepped into the world of food and drink as a college student at the University of Texas at Austin. He found

work as a cook and server at a sorority on campus, and began to enjoy the field. Shortly after college, he sought to open his own restaurant. The endeavor was one that was made possible only through his brotherhood within the Eta Chapter. His first restaurant: a Texadelphia.

“We had 40 Fraternity guys come together, each putting in what they could,” said Landis. “Money, marketing experience, and so much more. We then had 40 different guys all saying they were owners of the same restaurant!”

After opening several restaurants, the desire to employ people with special needs grew and grew. During this time, Landis read Gene Stallings’, “Another Season”, a book that proved to be the impetus the project needed to take flight.

Landis has big plans for the future of Howdy Homemade. He recently opened a second location in Salt Lake

City, and he is in talks to get his ice cream to retail stores in his region.

“There is so much I can trace back to what I learned as a Delta Sig, and from other Delta Sigs,” said Landis.

“The business world can be as tangled as a Gordian Knot!”

Lou Dog Events NAPERVILLE, IL

After 15 years in the banking industry, it seemed like this would most certainly be the career that carried him until retirement. Little did he know, his side project would soon take over his world.

Josh Seago, Illinois State University ’00, was working as a banker, adjunct teacher, and starting a passion project on the side. As a man who loved craft beers, he fantasized about what it would be like to work in the field. He didn’t know much about brewing, but he did know a few things about throwing an event as a regular event volunteer. He decided to try his hand at producing a

beer festival in his area.

That was 2013, the year Lou Dog Events hit the scene. In 2013, they put on 3 different festivals. This year, Lou Dog will host 18.

“I thought I would be a banker my whole life,” said Seago. “When I started planning the first event, I thought ‘How hard could it be?’ Those were famous last words!”

Lou Dog Events is in the business of full-scale community events. The smallest events they produce have 1200-1800 people in attendance, with their biggest breaking 12,000 attendees. Events can have anywhere from 10 to 100 tents, complete with stages, bands, generators, food trucks, and more. They take over entire parks for some of their events!

One of their most iconic events takes over Chicago’s Grant Park for 2 days. Seago books 5 bands, over 100 brewers, and food trucks to feed the 7000+ attendees. Another event unique to Lou Dog is their Naperville Ale Fest – Winter Edition. On the last weekend of February, Seago gets 4 large circus tents, 10 food trucks, 3 bonfires, 100 brewers and 200+ beers

for the only full-scale outdoor winter festival in the country. The event regularly sells out.

Seago worked on his chapter’s philanthropic events during his undergraduate years, and gained a heart for charity. At every Lou Dog event, a share of the proceeds go to benefit a local charity. To date, they have donated over $80,000 to the community.

Seago is looking into ways to innovate as Lou Dog Events grows.

He wants to do more “off-season” events like the Naperville Ale Fest – Winter Edition, extending the festival season past the usual Memorial Day through Labor Day schedule.

These questions are why Kevin Zdeblick, Western Illinois University ’13, made SpotLyte. SpotLyte is an app and website designed to help people find out what is happening around them by searching local happy hours, specials and events happening in your city. The app allows you to rate and review your experience and see pictures of the actual bar/restaurant.

SpotLyte is available in Chicago right now, but will be expanding to Milwaukee, Madison, and Indianapolis

by January. The idea stems from Kevin’s enjoyment of learning how everything works and connecting people with their new favorite places in town.

Kevin’s dad was in the Gamma Kappa Chapter before him, so Kevin knew he wanted to join Delta Sig long before he made it to college. He joined shortly after the house burned down and saw the commitment the men in the chapter had to keep the chapter’s legacy alive. – SpotLyteSpecials.com

Domaine de Sainte Rose & Simpsons Wine Estate FRANCE & ENGLAND

Charles Simpson, Michigan State University ’88, is the co-founder, with his wife Ruth, of Domaine de Sainte Rose in the Languedoc. They have been making award-winning wine in southern France for 14 years. Sainte Rose produces 360,000 bottles per year and exports to 14 different countries.

In 2012, along with his wife Ruth, Charles started Simpsons Wine Estate with a dream of making world-class English Sparkling Wine. The Simpsons’ invested in 90 acres of prime viticultural land in Barham, Kent, and are now building a state-of-the-art modern winery and tasting room which will release its first wines in 2018.

“One of the wonderful things about being in the world of wine is the diversity of the job,” said Charles. “Owning and running a wine business requires one to employ all the business disciplines from production to marketing, and everything else in-between. Over any given year I will: Prune, trellis, trim, pick, crush, press, inoculate, ferment, de-cuve, stabilize, de-gas, sulphur, finance, bottle, package, box, load, ship, market, present, and finally, sell wine.”

Charles graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in International Business. Charles and Ruth having been living and working in France since 2001, but have recently moved to Kent to start their English Sparkling Wine Project. They have two daughters, both of whom attend the Kings School.

Saloon. Fat Head's was founded in 1992 as a premiere craft beer tap house and restaurant in Pittsburgh, PA. In 2009, they expanded to Ohio. With the explosion in popularity came the necessity to open a full-scale production brewery in 2012. Fat Head's Brewery produces original ales and lagers for distribution throughout Ohio and Western Pennsylvania.

“The laid back conviviality of the brewing scene is great,” said Lipovan.

“World class beers are still affordable and not pretentious. Fans of craft beer tend to be very cool, thoughtful people that enjoy the inconspicuous consumption of fine things. I have been spoiled with great beer from the area’s top ranked breweries for the past 20 years.”

Lipovan has worked with two of the best breweries in the greater Cleveland area between Great Lakes Brewing Company and Fat Head's Brewery and Saloon.

Owned and operated by two Fraternal, and familial, brothers, Mick Duff’s Brewing Company has been serving up fine brews in Idaho for over a decade. They are laser focused on delivering all of their food and drinks with 100% natural, locally-sourced ingredients. The results are beer and pub fare that stand above the rest.

Mick Duff’s Brewing made the jump to production brewing last year, putting some of their 30+ beers on store shelves.

“I don’t think about work as work,” said Duffy. “I think about how lucky I am to spend my day working with my brother!”

Duffy and Mickey Mahoney are members of the Gamma Delta Chapter at Washington State University. They even served as the chapter’s Vice President and President together!

Both are Order of the Sphinx Award recipients as well.

Basalt Cellars CLARKSON, WA

Rick Wasem, Washington State University ’74, is co-owner and winemaker at Basalt Cellars. He entered the business in 2004, and has focused on ultra-premium wines with limited production. To date, Basalt Cellars has received over 180 awards and 90+ point ratings since their first release in 2006. They have 2 estate vineyards in the Lewis Clark Valley AVA and control exclusive blocks in the Columbia Valley including block 9c Cabernet Sauvignon at Bacchus Vineyard.

Wasem joined Gamma Delta at Washington State University in 1973 and lived in the chapter facility for

Mozzeria three semesters before taking some time off due to illness. He returned to WSU in 1975 and graduated with a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree in 1980, staying in touch with his Delta Sig brothers. His cousin, Vaughn Wasem, was involved in rebuilding the chapter and chapter facility at the University of Idaho, and always threatened to disown him if he didn't join Delta Sig.

“I am very grateful for the time I had at the house and how the friendships I made with my brothers has enriched my life over and over again,” said Wasem. “When you choose to join a fraternity you really cannot imagine the impact it can have on the rest of your life. Very glad I and the rest of my brothers chose Delta Sigma Phi.”

Russell Stein, Gallaudet University ’91, is the owner of Mozzeria, one of the Bay Area’s most unique pizzerias. The entire staff of Mozzeria is deaf, a distinction few restaurants in the world can lay claim to.

ST. AMBROSE CELLARS BEULAH, MI

Mike Altesleben, Michigan State University ’97, is a Vintner at St. Ambrose Cellars, a 20,000 case a year Estate Meadery/Winery/Brewery. As

a Vintner, Altesleben is responsible for all beverage production, but specializes in winemaking.

St. Ambrose Cellars began with their mead. They were first and foremost beekeepers when they began over 30 years ago. With a nearly limitless supply of honey at their disposal, mead came as a natural progression.

As their mead business took off, the desire to craft more beverages led them to start making wine and beer.

“I enjoy making vintage wines because it is like a time capsule for that year,” said Altesleben. “Watching the grapes develop throughout the year, and then making something delicious with them at the end of the season is truly rewarding. I enjoy sharing the wines with friends and family and remember everything that happened throughout that specific vintage. Every year has a different challenge, but when it all comes together, resulting in a beautiful wine, that is what it is all about.”

ROSINE'S RESTAURANT MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA

John Culcasi, San Jose State University ’14, is an undergraduate with a dream.

His family owns Rosine’s Restaurant, a local family restaurant serving up home-cooked meals for generations.

One day, he plans to become the third generation to run this local staple.

Rosine's Restaurant has been family owned and operated since 1980. The restaurant became an instant success in

the community, and they are proud to have been voted Best Family Restaurant and Best Desserts since 1992. Rosine's has also been featured on several major network programs like Guy Fieri's Diners Drive-Ins and Dives.

When John turned 16 years old, he immediately began contributing to the family business. He is Rosine's Restaurant's third generation, and has held several positions in the front and back of house. When he graduates with his Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, he plans to one day take over the family restaurant.

“The food and beverage industry is an incredible experience,” said Culcasi. “Rosine's Restaurant attracts a variety of people from all over the world. I most enjoy being able to share my family's hard work and family recipes with all of our customers. It is a great feeling, knowing our customers have enjoyable experiences by providing great service and never leaving anyone hungry.”

JOYFUL NOISE WINE MCMINNVILLE, OR

Deven Morganstern, University of Oregon ’01, is the Executive Noise Maker at Joyful Noise Wine. His creative job title is quite suited for the creative winery he operates. They make wine from one ton of grapes, one year at a time. In the spring, they introduce a new vintage and have it available until it is gone. It is about as small-batch as can be, but each of those batches receives immense care and attention.

In 2014, Morganstern purchased his first fruit from the Lazy River Vineyard with the plan to make one ton of grapes into something delicious to share with his friends. With space and equipment given to them by Rob and Maria Stuart of R. Stuart & Co., they started their winery focusing on single vineyard-sourced Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley. Currently, they produce 70 cases of Joyful Noise Lazy River Vineyard Pinot Noir a year and share the wine through a mailing list and website.

In his senior year, Morganstern attended the Leadership Institute, which then sparked his desire to go on and work for the National organization. After a few years on the road visiting chapters and meeting some amazing men along the way, he resettled in Oregon. With the skills and relationships built through Delta Sigma Phi, Morganstern found his way to the wine industry.

hands that grew it and ushered it into the bottle, the table it ended up at and the friends that it was enjoyed with. No one gets into the wine business for the money, it is full of wildly passionate people at every stage of the process and it is infectious. For me, Joyful Noise is a way to share a bit of my own story and to surround myself with those passionate people. Growing up I was the oldest of six kids, it was always loud and crazy around the dinner table, and that joyful noise was love.”

They started very small with a one barrel brew system, focused on brewing the very best they could while maintaining high quality. Currently, they are on track to do 7,000 barrels a year.

Manson is a combo CFO/ co-founder. His daily schedule deals with accounting, ordering, sales, mopping, and slinging beers at their tap room. He, of course, likes to make sure their brews meet his standard through his continued quality control.

“It's a very cool meld of art and science,” said Manson. “I love working with our team to achieve our common goal, which remains quality beer and having fun.”

Richard Mathy, SUNY Oswego ’99, is co-owner and co-founder of Fulton Chain Craft Brewery. Their goal to give their customers a truly Adirondack beer experience, and they use exclusively New York grown hops to help achieve this.

Their tap room, complete with 10 brews on tap, gives visitors a true taste of the grandeur of the Adirondack Mountains.

Mathy maintains regular contact with his chapter, and actively assists the ACB when possible. He served as the Social Chairman as an undergraduate.

“Just like with the Fraternity, it is all about the people you meet,” said Mathy.

“Having a good beer is important, but you are also selling an experience.”

Kurt Ludwig, East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania ’86, is Co-Owner and Head Brewer. He runs the brewery with his brother, Jim. Mad Princes Brewing is a small ½ barrel nanobrewery, only offering up their beers in-house. They are the smallest brewing company in their region.

By their own royal decree, they state that their taproom is a place for merriment, tomfoolery and camaraderie. Princes and peasants alike are welcome beyond the drawbridge to savor their beers, and to raise a glass to madness!

“I am my own boss. If someone tells me to do something stupid, it was me!” laughed Ludwig. “I get to be creative and get immediate feedback from customers when they drink the beer.

STRE HER ROT NGT TREN OOD ERHO Though the sky was gray, excitement did abound on the opening day of Convention! The day kicked off with a wet, yet fun, golf scramble at the Pine Ridge Golf Course. The Red Cross service event was the next event of the day. Brothers assisted the American Red Cross by filling ice bags that are used in preserving blood donations.

In the evening, there were two different receptions for attendees.

Guests and friends of the Fraternity had a special reception that detailed all of the great events planned just for them over the weekend. Then, everyone joined together for the general reception in the foyer.

Food and drink was available as a local jazz quartet, led by Brother Eli Stopak, University of Maryland, College Park ’16.

The day closed out with first-time Convention attendees earning their fez at the mysterious Pilgrim Degree.

The official business of the Convention began Friday morning at the first of 5 In-Convention Assembled sessions.

This session ended with the final third of the ICA being opened to guests for the Convention's keynote speaker.

Derreck Kayango gave the keynote presentation, speaking to his past as an immigrant from Uganda and his present as a major corporate executive. Now the founder of the Global Soap Project and CEO of the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, he shared how people united behind a cause can achieve something beyond their wildest imaginations. He closed the session by teaching the audience a traditional song that had everyone in the room standing and singing along.

Lunch was hosted by the Delta Sigma Phi Foundation, with Foundation President, Brad Sullivan, Transylvania University ’99, providing attendees with a comprehensive update on the state of the Foundation. Several undergraduate members also gave a personal account of how the generosity of our donors have made all the difference for their academic pursuits.

His speech detailed the progress the Fraternity has made towards meeting Vision 2025 goals. He also outlined how Delta Sigma Phi plans to grow our current momentum to reach the goal of becoming America’s Leading Fraternity.

Fraternity Historian and Past Grand Council President, Loren Mall, Kansas State University ’58, expanded on the hidden meanings of the ritual during his famous Messages from the Ritual.

The Delta Sigma Phi Foundation hosted a fun-filled evening at the Maryland Science Center with their live and silent auctions. This year’s auction raised more money for the Fraternity’s leadership programs than any prior summer auction in Delta Sig history.

Another guest speaker helped kick the day off at the morning ICA session. Judson Horras, CEO of the NorthAmerican Interfraternity Conference, spoke with brothers about the challenges fraternities and sororities face in the current media. He provided insight into how fraternity and sorority life is adapting and thriving in response to the pressure placed on it from higher education institutions and media outlets.

Attendees were welcomed back from their free time to explore Baltimore with a special wine tasting with JUSTIN Wines, founded by Delta Sigma Phi Board of Trustees member, Justin Baldwin, San Jose State University ’64.

Justin received a Career Achievement Award during the Convention for his excellence in the field.

Saturday ended with a bang as Dave Harvey, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ’88, and Bryan Blemer, Utah State University ’93, hosted the Awards Banquet. The event honored all of the amazing chapters, hard-working volunteers, and dedicated brothers who exemplify the Better Man. The banquet included dinner and a performance from the Singing Pilgrims.

CHARTERING IOTA XI AT UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA-AIKEN

A

select group of students on the campus of the University of South Carolina Aiken, had a unique goal in mind for their time on campus. Those men resolved to attain a charter before they graduated. In just 2 years after that dream was born, they have begun their first full academic year as a chartered chapter of Delta Sigma Phi.

The Iota Xi Chapter is mak-

ing waves on their campus in the Palmetto State. Fueled by their dedication to that common dream, the Iota Xi Chapter has wasted no time in making their presence known on campus. Members hold leadership positions in organizations all across campus.

The men are more than just involved on campus. The chapter brothers of Iota Xi encompass all walks of life. They are a group diverse in interests, majors, and backgrounds. Through their membership, the men of the Iota Xi

Chapter are truly learning what it means to come together to be a part of something bigger than themselves.

The night of the chartering was a well-attended affair. Family members and friends came in droves to celebrate with the chapter.

Representatives from the university and Delta Sigma Phi were also present: former Grand Council member, Jim Knoll, Angel Miano (Fraternity and Sorority Life Advisor), and New Chapter Development Specialist, Christopher Crawford, Gamma Tau ’13.

“It was so great to see a smile on everyone’s face,” said Josh Imholte, chapter president of Iota Xi. “We’re not just going to stop here, there’s a lot of work to do.”

It was particularly moving for the chapter to show off to their family just how far they have come thanks to their membership with Delta Sigma Phi.

The men who once held the goal of chartering before graduation now have another lofty aspiration: earn a Pyramid of Excellence before graduation. They are also laying the groundwork for obtaining a chapter facility down the road.

The University of South Carolina Aiken is known as a diverse campus.

The Iota Xi Chapter believes that is ultimately their biggest strength as a whole. With men of different backgrounds and focuses, men doing anything and everything on campus, they know their dream of a Pyramid of Excellence is achievable.

“No matter what, at the end of the day, we are brothers,” said Imholte.

The brothers of the Iota Xi Chapter are dreamers. They chase their goals with fervor, forging the bonds of brotherhood as they go. Obtaining their charter was just their first step as a chapter of Delta Sigma Phi. Together, they know they can do so much more.

MCKEE SCHOLARSHIPS

First awarded in 2009, the McKee Scholarship program is available thanks to the generosity of the late Hensel McKee, Washington ’30 and his wife, Jeanette McKee. The scholarship is available through the Delta Sigma Phi Foundation to undergraduate members, and alumni members who are pursuing graduate degrees. This year, we were able to award $150,000 in scholarships through this fund, to 63 scholarship recipients. This scholarship means so much to me because it serves as an incredible way of giving back to my loving parents, who have supported me financially, mentally, and emotionally, throughout my academic career.

Pyramid Program Annual Summary & Report Card

T

wo years ago, we took bold steps in updating our accreditation process from an exhaustive checklist into an intentionally shaped, and aptly named, annual assessment: the Pyramid Program. By doing so, we are able to better identify the operational needs of each of our chapters, while allowing for our chapters to highlight and receive credit for events and causes that they are particularly interested in.

At the end of each review period, chapter officers, volunteers, and the appropriate campus-based professionals receive an annual summary and detailed report specific to their chapter. This report highlights the year at a glance for each chapter, as well as provides detailed feedback for each component for which documentation was received. A chapter’s Pyramid Program performance directly affects the areas of focus and coaching that a chapter will receive from Chapter Support staff for the year following.

Planning and timing are critical to a successful Pyramid Program submission. Chapters have the opportunity to submit documentation to their Chapter Support Specialist for review year-round. In early Spring, the chapter leadership, as well as their respective alumni support structures, will receive a letter outlining what components national headquarters staff has received documentation for and what is still outstanding. UPHOLDING OUR STANDARDS

Chapter Closures ZETA ZETA CHAPTER – TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY

This past June, the Grand Council voted to revoke the charter and close Zeta Zeta Chapter at Texas Tech University. The closure of the chapter came as a result of the chapter's repeated violations of university and National Fraternity policies over the course of two years. The chapter was found responsible for university policy violations and was issued a disciplinary probation and additional sanctions. The following term, the university investigated and found the chapter responsible for additional incidents at which the chapter had violated its university probation. Each of these incidents was tied to additional reports of a failure to adhere to Delta Sigma Phi’s new member program. The chapter was suspended and lost recognition from the university.

These violations were breaches of the hazing and alcohol policies of both Texas Tech University and Delta Sigma Phi.

Despite the chapter's strengths, a combination of poor decision-making, a disregard for the university’s policies and a failure to adhere to the Fraternity’s values, ultimately led to the need of closing the chapter. We are truly disheartened that our brothers will lose this undergraduate component of the Fraternity experience. Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity is committed to upholding our standards and fostering meaningful Fraternity experiences for our members.

IOTA GAMMA – INDIANA UNIVERSITY SOUTH BEND This summer the Grand Council voted to revoke the charter and close the Iota Gamma Chapter at IUSB. The chapter’s membership had declined significantly over the course of five years and ultimately placed the chapter with a membership that could not support chapter operations.

Recruitment and operational training had been provided by national Fraternity staff, however the chapter was unable to sustain a viable membership. Additionally, the chapter was unable to uphold the financial obligations of membership, occurring a debt over the past two years.

DELTAGRAPHS GAMMA PSI Stan Wisnieski, Morningside College ’68, was one of 3 umpires selected to work the Class 5A championship game at the 2017 Iowa Girls High School State Softball Tournament in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Wisnieski, the dean of tournament umpires, worked his 30th state tournament. He was also one of the ten 2017 inductees into the Iowa Men's Fast Pitch Softball Hall of Fame.

Delbert Christensen, Morningside College ’71, was selected as one of the umpires to work the 2017 Iowa Girls High School State Softball Tournament in Fort Dodge, Iowa. This was his 7th state tournament.

Curt Bladt, Morningside College ’65, in his 40th season as the Harlan High School Head Football Coach, recorded his 400th career win on Fri., Sept. 15, a 17-14 win over Glenwood High School. Curt's career record now stands at 400-59. That means that he's been averaging 10 wins per season for 40 years!

BETA NU Over the past 35 years, the Beta Nu Chapter has produced a generation of three legacies in one family. Uncle, father, and now son – all at the Beta Nu Chapter at California State University, Fresno.

This shows that Delta Sigma Phi, through good and hard times, has been doing great things since coming to Fresno State in 1947.

Retired Major Lawrence Aguilar class of 1983 is uncle to Christian Aguilar. This Delta Sig brother has served three tours in the United States Army overseas in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and multiple drug task missions in South America. He holds a degree in international studies and currently works for the United States Mint in San Francisco. He is a member of the Fresno American Legion Post #509. The second Delta Sig brother is Retired Corporal Anthony Aguilar, class of 1992 (criminal justice degree), and a founding father of Beta Nu Chapter (1992). He served his country in the United States Army, Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield, and with the Army National Guard when they were deployed to the Los Angeles riots. He served his community by becoming a 13-year veteran as a Deputy Sheriff for the State of California. He is currently medically retired, and is a member of the Clovis American Legion Post #147. The third Delta Sig Phi brother is Christian Aguilar, initiated in 2017, son of Veteran Corporal Anthony Aguilar. He attended Clovis High School and is currently in his first year at California State University, Fresno. He was accepted into four other colleges but wanted to follow in his family footsteps and become a Brother of Delta Sigma Phi-Beta Nu and attend Fresno State and achieve a degree in sports marketing.
