City of Delta restructures community development BY PAT SUNDERLAND Managing Editor

Restructuring of the City of Delta’s community development department has resulted in a reduction in force and the termination of department director Glen Black. Following that action, the City of Delta issued a press release detailing how the department will be meeting the needs of the community going forward. “These restructing changes include relocating some services to other city departments and contracting for some services,” the press release states. “We sincerely believe that these changes will be beneficial to our community and in alignment with the city’s desire to encourage redevelopment, the growth of existing businesses, and to attract new business, while maintaining financial stability,” the press release states. Medical marijuana moratorium extended BY PAT SUNDERLAND Managing Editor

The subject of medical marijuana dominated both a work session and the regular meeting of the Delta City Council on Jan. 8, but the evening ended on a musical note. Under the heading of “Only in Delta,” Judy Hagan picked up her microphone and sang “Happy Birthday” to the mayor, with a refrain that included blessings from her mother in heaven. During the business portion of the meeting, the discussion on medical marijuana resulted in a 4-1 vote to extend the moratorium on medical marijuana establishments three months from the initial date of Feb. 13. No applications for medical marijuana establishments or applications for building permits related to those establishments will be accepted until May 13, unless the council lifts the moratorium before then. Council member Christopher Ryan voted “no,” citing a desire to keep moving forward. Extension of the moratorium followed two separate votes to table the second readings of zoning and licensing ordinances until the Jan. 22 meeting, to allow council members more time for “due diligence.” Both questions passed on split votes. During the work session and the regular meeting, citizens had an opportunity to express their thoughts. Council member Kevin Carlson encouraged members of the public to continue to share research they’ve done on the subject, so council can gain a broader understanding of issues and concerns. Mayor Ron Austin says he wants clarification on state regulations concerning the allowable quantity and frequency of purchases. Once the regulations are in place and the moratorium has been lifted, applications for medical marijuana establishments will be accepted. A maximum of two of each type of license will be granted

through a lottery system. John Thomas, owner of a medical marijuana center in Montrose, has expressed a desire to do business in Delta as well. He previously owned a medical marijuana store in Delta until council voted to prohibit that type of business. He said when it comes to zoning, it’s smart for council to take its time and do things right. He said a medical marijuana center doesn’t need to be on Main Street, but it should be located in a well-lit, easily accessible area where patients and employees will feel safe.

He added that having employees who respect the medical aspects of marijuana and respect the community is key to keeping products out of the hands of minors. Several individuals expressed a desire to provide an opportunity to an individual like Thomas, who has family and community ties, as opposed to mega-corporations that will presumably also want to do business in Delta. Scott Schaible, an outspoken opponent of marijuana, visited Thomas’s shop and said he likes the way Thomas does

business. He said he believes the City of Delta owes Thomas an opportunity to open a store here, since the actions of a previous council forced him to close down. Concerns about odors emanating from marijuana grow facilities are crossing over to hemp, which is being stored and processed in several warehouses in city limits. The Delta Planning and Zoning Commission will be asked to address hemp, while the medical marijuana questions will come back to council on Jan. 22.

Mark Taylor shares mission, vision for Delta County Sheriff’s Office BY PAT SUNDERLAND Managing Editor

During the year he campaigned for sheriff, Mark Taylor put a great deal of thought into his mission, vision and values for the Delta County Sheriff ’s Office. He shared that vision one-on-one with every employee of the sheriff ’s office, and now with the readers of the DCI. “It’s one thing being undersheriff, another sitting behind this desk and gaining a bit of experience,” Sheriff Taylor said. “I know I’m not going to see the complete picture until I sit behind this desk for a little bit.” “My intent remains the same, but there may be some minor changes moving forward.” He cites the importance of teamwork, integrity, fairness and personal responsibility as the sheriff ’s office strives to provide the highest quality of

law enforcement services to the people who live, work and visit our county.” “We are very, very fortunate that Fred McKee left a good solid foundation to work from, but we do not want to remain stagnant. Going forward, we want to build on that foundation. I can’t do that alone. I need the help of each and every employee in this office. Quinn [Archibeque, undersheriff] and I both feel the employees are excited and willing to do what they can to help build on that foundation.” In addition to appointing Archibeque undersheriff, Taylor has surrounded himself with a leadership team that includes Lt. City of Delta seeks feedback

The City of Delta is hosting a tourism town hall Thursday, Jan. 17, in conjunction with business after hours sponsored by the Delta Area Chamber of Commerce. This event will take place at the Needle Rock Brewing Company from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. There is no charge. RSVPs are requested at 874-8616. City officials will be seeking feedback on a local effort to increase tourism revenue in partnership with Delta County Tourism and the Colorado Tourism Office. Participants will have an opportunity to say what they like best about Delta and what they think could use some improvement. School board vacancy announced Delta County School Board is looking to appoint a new board member due to the recent resignation of Richard Hypio, Hotchkiss area representative. The new appointee must reside in District IV (Hotchkiss area) of Delta County. The exact boundaries are on file with the Delta County Elections Office at the county courthouse, 501 Palmer. If a potential candidate is unsure whether they live within the boundaries of District IV, they can check the map at the Elections Office. LETTERS Delta City Council should take a step back stockpile enough edibles such as THC infused gummy bears which can then be illegally resold in a well-known market targeting teenagers. Our city lawyer and local dispensary owner John Thomas agrees with the mayor’s findings. The loophole is further validated by the state of Maryland where they had discovered this same gray area. It’s too close to being the same as recreational so they changed the law and separated food products, particularly THC infused candies, not to be sold in medical marijuana dispensaries. Even our own U.S. attorney for the District of Colorado is warning us by using words like we need to step back, pause or take a breath; in other words, slow down this grand experiment of big revenues from marijuana. He says we have seen no net gain and Colorado youth uses 85

Dear Editor: Delta voters thought they were voting for medical marijuana. You see, it’s all in the wording; another ballot question deception. The citizens of Delta did not know what they were actually voting for; in other words we were duped. When searching for loopholes that can lead to criminal behavior, it helps to have a mayor who spent 27 years in law enforcement. During the Jan. 8 city council meeting Mayor Austin made this statement: “It recently came to my attention that the current state law contains a loophole that I will refer to as ‘the legal ability to promote illegal activity.’ The loophole allows for a breach that separates medical from recreational marijuana. Resolve to dispose of medications safely Dear Editor: Here’s a simple resolution that not only benefits you but the community: get rid of any expired and unused medications by taking them to a permanent drop box location in Delta. Throwing unused medication in the trash, or worse, flushing it down a toilet can put it into our water supply, streams and rivers. Taking meds to a drop box allows them to be safely disposed of and reduces the risk of them being accidentally or purposefully misused or abused. This is especially important for seniors. Support border funding Dear Editor: I sympathize with government employees, but if Republicans give in on the shutdown, we’ll never get border security. Democrats refuse to acknowledge that President Trump was elected because he promised to put America and Americans first. That’s what we want. We spend billions each year on education, healthcare, law enforcement, incarceration, food and shelter for illegal immigrants, but we can’t find enough money to make sure our veterans get adequate medical care. We spend billions on illegals while our teachers and police are often understaffed, underpaid, and undersupplied.

We spend billions even though illegal criminals endanger our lives and property, and illegals working here lower the incomes of our poorest citizens, especially minorities. We spend billions on anti-terrorist activities yet have a border that any determined terrorist can walk across. We have an opioid crisis and too much heroin and fentanyl (synthetic opioid up to 100 times stronger than morphine, often manufactured clandestinely in Mexico and added to or sold as heroin, resulting in overdose deaths) crossing our southern border. Jan. 6: Officers responded to Delta County Memorial Hospital to assist a Colorado State Patrol trooper with an arrestee. Jan. 7: An officer responded to Tayshen Automotive, 135 Eaton Avenue, for a theft. A verbal warning was issued to a 16-year-old female driver for a turn signal violation. Officers responded to the 1600 block of I Road for a twovehicle accident. No injuries were reported or observed. Armando Aparicio, 30, of Eckert was issued a ticket for alleged careless driving and driving a motor vehicle while license revoked. Officers responded to the 300 block of Meeker Street for a two-vehicle accident. No injuries were reported or observed. Both vehicles were driven from the scene. An officer responded to a residence in the 200 block of Grand Avenue to recover a stolen motorcycle at the request of another law enforcement agency. A theft was reported from a vehicle in the 500 block of Howard Street. During a traffic stop, a verbal warning was given to the driver for a defective tail lamp and brake light. The passenger, Jessica Austin Gallob, 34, of Crawford was arrested and jailed for alleged unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Jeena Marie Hebert, 36, of Delta was arrested and jailed for alleged unlawful possession of a controlled substance and first degree introduction of contraband. An officer took a report of a wallet being lost at City Market. The wallet was found and returned to the owner. An officer took a report of a possible sexual assault. Jan. 9: An officer responded to a residence in the 600 block of Columbia on a report of a possible drug overdose. Criminal mischief involving a business was reported in the 200 block of Main Street. An officer responded to Northside Storage, 713 Highway 50, for a report of abandoned property. An officer responded to the 300 block of Main Street for a hit-and-run accident. A vehicle mirror was damaged by a passing vehicle. The damaged vehicle was not occupied at the time of the accident. Officers responded to 1550 Highway 92 on a report of a possible shoplifter. An officer responded to the 100 block of Grand Boulevard to assist with a person having a medical issue.

Jan. 10: Christos Fathom Kester, 45, of Montrose was arrested and jailed on a warrant with an $800 bond. Isaac Jacob Gallegos, 27, of Delta was arrested and bonded on a warrant with a $100 bond. Officers responded to 25 Stafford Lane, to assist an ambulance crew. Dana Leigh Ungaro, 56, of Cedaredge was arrested and jailed for alleged obstructing a peace officer/ firefighter/emergency medical service provider/etc. An officer took a report of forgery. Officers responded to 101 Highway 92, Maverik Gas Station, for an accident involving five vehicles. Injuries were reported and observed. This incident is under investigation. Jan. 6: An officer responded to DCMH on a report of a dog bite. An officer responded to Kwiki Tire, 1680 S. Main Street, for criminal mischief. Officers responded to Delta Library for a male subject who was causing a disturbance. A two-vehicle accident occurred in the 900 block alley between Main Street and Meeker Street. No injuries were reported or observed. Both vehicles were driven from the scene. An officer took a missing person report. Odessa Rae Kirkedahl, 25, of Austin is Caucasian, 5’7”, with brown hair and blue eyes. Criminal mischief was reported at Delta High School. Jan. 12: An officer located a single vehicle accident in the area of 1600 Road and H-38 Road. No injuries were reported or observed. The vehicle had to be towed. An officer responded to Highway 50 at mile marker 68.99 on a report of a single vehicle accident. No injuries were reported or observed. The vehicle was driven from the scene. An officer responded to E. 11th Street and Main Street for a single vehicle accident involving a stop sign. No injuries were reported or observed. The vehicle was driven from the scene. An officer responded to DCMH for an assault. Reminder: The charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. From the Delta County Sheriff’s Office (partial list): Jan. 8: Curtis Daniels, 46, of Paonia was arrested at the intersection of 3rd Street and Grand Avenue on two outstanding felony warrants. Deputies responded to a family disturbance at a residence on Old Wagon Road near Delta. An ongoing civil dispute resulted in the arrest of William Harmon on charges of criminal attempt to commit murder (a second degree felony), menacing, prohibited use of a weapon and driving under the influence of alcohol. Deputies contacted Harmon after he reportedly pulled into the driveway of a home on F Road, Delta,

then backed away twice. He had previously threatened to shoot the occupants. He was stopped on Highway 50 near D Road. Detecting a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, deputies asked him to perform roadside maneuvers. When he failed they obtained permission to search his vehicle. A Remington 870 shotgun was allegedly found on the back seat of his pickup; a fully-loaded 40-caliber H&K handgun was secured inside a Bud Light beer box. Several rounds of ammunition for both the shotgun and pistol were also located. Harmon was transported to Delta County Jail where he’s being held on a $25,000 bond. Jan. 9: An attempt to verify the address of a registered sex offender proved unsuccessful. Deputies determined that Jacob Smoot, 22, was likely in violation of his probation. Jan. 10: Deputies responded to a report of a suicidal male at a residence in Austin. Deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence on Highway 65, Austin, twice within a couple of hours. During the second call, which occurred at 1:52 a.m., they arrested Denise Denham for harassment as an act of domestic violence. A burglary was reported at Smiling Aviation, 870 1575 Road. Entry was gained through a front window. An ipad and a small amount of cash were taken from the office. Deputies are reviewing surveillance footage. Jan. 11: Deputies received a report of a runaway juvenile from a home near Paonia. The juvenile was later located with his mother. At about 6:30 p.m., deputies responded to a traffic accident on G50 Road near Highway 50. The investigation was handled by the Colorado State Patrol. Deputies took separate

reports of identity theft and unauthorized use of a credit card, both from residents in the Delta area. Jan. 12: At about 1:15 a.m., dispatch was notified about a 15year-old female who had left her Austin residence at about 4 p.m. the previous afternoon. It was believed she was with a boyfriend at a residence in Montrose County. Deputies from the Montrose County Sheriff’s Office located her at the residence and arrangements were made for her to be picked up by her grandmother. Stephanie Roesler, 26, of Delta was arrested on two outstanding felony warrants. As the result of a traffic stop on Highway 92 near the town of Austin, Katherine Griswold of Delta was arrested for driving under the influence, criminal impersonation and numerous other charges. A break-in was reported at a home on Fruitland Mesa. The window of the front door was broken and all the kitchen cabinet doors were opened. Suspects have been identified. Jan. 13: While on routine patrol, a deputy observed a white Chevy Blazer pulled to the side of Highway 65. A computer check revealed the 2002 Blazer had been stolen from Idaho Springs. The vehicle pulled back onto the northbound lane of Highway 65, then turned west on North Road before turning again onto Orchard where it stopped. Two occupants were taken into custody without incident. The driver, Wendell Harmon, 43, was transported to Delta County Jail on three active warrants. He faces additional charges of aggravated motor vehicle theft and driving while license revoked (habitual traffic offender). It was determined the female passenger had recently been picked up and was not involved in the theft of the vehicle.

Accident involves 5 vehicles, 3 injuries DPD PRESS RELEASE

At approximately 5:14 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10, officers of the Delta Police Department responded to Maverik Convenience, 101 Highway 92, for a multiple vehicle crash in the parking lot. Investigation revealed five vehicles were involved, three people were injured and three vehicles had to be towed from the scene. Augustus Alan Sandels, 20, of Cedaredge was issued a ticket for alleged failure to yield right of way from a stop sign. It is alleged that a white Chevy Tahoe was attempting to cross Highway 92 from Meeker Street into Maverik. A silver Jeep traveling west on Highway 92 in the righthand lane swerved to avoid hitting the Tahoe and hit the curb, then travelled forward into two vehicles sitting at the

fuel pump. One of those vehicles hit a female who was standing outside the vehicle. The other vehicle at the pump was pushed into another vehicle. The Jeep and the two vehicles it collided with were towed from the scene. Two people were transported to Delta County Memorial Hospital by Delta County Ambulance District. One person was treated on scene and released. The driver of the Tahoe was cited. The Delta Police Department thanks all of the first responders who were involved for their professional expertise in this incident. Bystanders also offered assistance. The Delta Police Department wishes to thank all of the Maverik customers who were displaced during the investigation for their patience and understanding.

Roger Christian retires from city Managing Editor

Friday, Jan. 11, marked Roger Christian’s final day as an employee of the City of Delta. He joined the Delta Police Department on April 29, 1987, and served as patrol officer, sergeant, commander, interim and acting chief of police. Just over 10 years ago, he transferred to the community development office and became the city’s code enforcement officer. His responsibilities were extended to animal control four years ago. That adds up to 21

Commissioners give go-ahead for Fairfield Specialty Eggs project BY ANNETTE BRAND Staff Writer

At their Jan. 7 meeting, county commissioners Don Suppes, Mark Roeber and Mike Lane approved the Fairfield Specialty Eggs project to move forward administratively, as provided for in the county’s Specific Development Regulations. Fairfield Specialty Eggs purchased two adjoining parcels of land located at 10079 Hidden Mesa Road in Austin. The property is located at the

intersection of Hwy. 92 and Hidden Mesa Road on the south side of the railroad tracks. Two prior Specific Development applications for the two parcels of land were reviewed and acted on through the administrative approval process. Kootenai Log Homes was approved in 2002. The second owner was Cox Enterprises in 2013. Fairfield Specialty Eggs plans to construct an 80x60-foot egg warehouse: 80’ x 40’ will be a cooler room; 80’ x 20’ will provide drive-through access and storage, with access to the cooler room. The proposed use is an egg warehouse with cooling. Egg washing is not being proposed at this time. The use will be to gather eggs from local farms to be transported to processing facilities. The weekly truck traffic is estimated to be around

10 incoming partial loads from farms and five outgoing full loads. Incoming trucks will come and go from the east and west. Outgoing trucks will come in from the west and leave to the west. Fairfield Specialty Eggs estimates 15, plus or minus, trucks per week traffic, using Hwy. 92. Fairfield Specialty Eggs proposes a truck and trailer access off Hidden Mesa Road to the north of the location of the warehouse, which will provide more room and better site distance for the trucks and trailers to access Hwy. 92. Among the new House members were Matt Soper of Delta, representing the City of Delta and all of Mesa County except Grand Junction, and Julie McCluskie of Dillon, representing eastern Delta County and Summit, Pitkin, Gunnison and Lake counties. Representative Soper is the ﬁrst Delta resident to serve in the State House since Charles Conklin 54 years ago. City receives funds to fight black market marijuana BY PAT SUNDERLAND Managing Editor

The Delta Police Department will receive up to $31,000 to investigate unlicensed marijuana cultivation and distribution operations. Funds for the gray and black market marijuana enforcement grants come from the state’s marijuana tax and are allocated by the state legislature through the marijuana enforcement division. Rural areas are one of four funding priorities. The other three are large scale operations, organized crime operations and operations that divert marijuana outside of Colorado. Chief Luke Fedler said he applied for the grant expecting to receive $3,000 to $4,000, so he was pleased to share the good news with Delta City Council on Jan. 8. In other business: • A proclamation declaring School Choice Week in Delta acknowleged the options available for education, including traditional schools, charter schools, private schools, parochial schools, online learning and homeschooling. • The south window of city hall was designated as the official site for posting meeting notices. Agendas and packets are also available online. • Annually, the city manager provides an order of succession in the event he is unavailable to manage a disaster emergency. Next in line are the director of parks, recreation and golf; director of public works and utilities; finance director; and chief of police. • Betsy Suerth, director of public works and utilities, provided an update on a “significant” water break that occurred

Influenza: To vaccinate or not, that’s the question the Centers for Disease Control, a contagious Influenza (also known respiratory illness caused as “flu”) is, according to by influenza viruses. It

can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Last year and this year have seen an elevated number of cases reported. Although more than 166 million doses of flu vaccine have been distributed this season, the cases of reported flu and the death toll from flu, have risen. The “official” season for flu starts at the beginning of October and extends until the end of March. However, statistics show that influenza is actually around all year, it just peaks when people spend more time indoors. This year, flu started to peak much earlier, and cases were being reported in early to mid-September. Predictions are that the season will also be extended past normal range. Each flu season, there are two controversies that begin to run amok. The “flu vs. cold” controversy, and the “flu vaccine controversy.” Both debates have their time in the sun. The first, “flu vs. cold,” is now easily debated. According to the CDC, “Flu and the common cold are both respiratory illnesses but they are caused by different viruses. The symptoms of flu can include fever or feeling feverish/chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches and fatigue (tiredness). Cold symptoms are usually milder than the symptoms of flu. People with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose. Colds generally do not result in serious health problems.” The flu vs. cold argument is easily solved these days with a swab up the nose ... and voila, you’re either positive or negative for the flu. The second disagreement is much more difficult to debate. To vaccinate or not to vaccinate. If you choose to do a deep dive into the internet, you will find no shortage of opinions for either side. Even if you’re weeding out those posting only opinions and going with those stat-

ing statistics and facts, it’s a hard argument. “Research” is not even a dependable source these days, as in the case of Dr. Andrew Wakefield who claimed there was a link between childhood MMR vaccine and autism (this research was retracted). Dr. Wakefield had his medical license revoked and the investigation showed that money was exchanged with a law firm planning to sue the vaccine companies. There are also “facts” about the ingredients in flu shots, such as thimerosal (a preservative) which contains mercury. Or formaldehyde, another preservative, which is also known as “embalming fluid.” By the way, the flu shot is available in preservativefree options now. So ... how do you choose? Dr. Melanie Doupé Gaiser, Ph.D., MPH, MA wrote a blog article entitled “It’s Flu Season! What’s Up with the Vaccine Controversy?” in December of last year. In the blog, she talks about the reasons that people avoid getting a flu shot. She first presents some opinions about the flu vaccine, the first being what’s called “herd immunity.” This is what occurs when enough people in a community are vaccinated that they provide protection for those infants and people who are too sick to be vaccinated by not bringing the disease into the area. Reduced vaccination rates also endanger those who have the flu shot, because of the challenges of predicting which strains of flu will affect the nation in a particular flu season. Effectiveness of the flu shot can vary from 10 to 60 percent in a given year. That means you

Commission is warning that scammers are engaging in a caller ID trick called “spoofing” to make it appear that they are calling from the Social Security Administration (SSA). Spoofing means that scammers can call from anywhere, but they make your caller ID show a different number — often one that looks legit. Here are few things the Federal Trade Commission says you should know about these so-called SSA calls. These scam calls are happening across the nation. Your phone rings.

up. Not only that, but we will tend to disregard the information/opinions that present alternative viewpoints. We all, and don’t you deny it, tend to fall victim to the “bandwagon effect,” especially now that social media is so popular. “You’ve heard of things ‘going viral,’ ” she states. We are influenced by the opinions of those around us. She writes about how, when we are weighing pros and cons, we tend to place more emphasis on the cons. This is because they are more memorable. Bad memories tend to stick with us because we get much more mileage out of them! If you get a flu shot and remain healthy all season it’s hardly a noticeable memory. But, if you get the flu shot and still get the flu, live in that misery for a week and you will certainly remember it! Lastly, she talks about “perceived susceptibility” ... I call it the “it ain’t gonna happen to me syndrome.” It’s the degree to which we believe we are likely to come down with the flu. Ten feet tall and bulletproof. To vaccinate, or not to vaccinate, that is the question. It’s an argument not easily won for either side. It is, however, a decision that should not be taken lightly. Do your homework, from reliable resources, and read both sides of the argument. Clearly, the blog above is trying to sway us to vaccinate, and just as clearly, I am trying to sway you to vaccinate. I am a nurse, it’s my job!! But if you are hesitant, please seek out the information you need to make an informed decision. It’s not too late this season for a flu shot.

She goes on to say, “The CDC estimates that up to 56,000 people have died each year in the U.S. as a result of the flu since 2010. And you know how you keep hearing about high hospital bills that are bankrupting Americans? Well, the flu sends up to 710,000 to the hospital each year. That means some big medical bills and lost income for something that could have been prevented with a flu shot. And the cost to the national economy? Nearly $6 billion in 2015, topping the economic cost of all other vaccine-preventable illnesses examined in one study. The researchers found that most of the economic burden caused by vaccine-preventable illness is caused by people who chose not to get vaccinated (about 79 percent of the total burden). When people make a decision not to get vaccinated, they’re making a decision that affects us all, and in multiple ways. So if the influenza vaccine can prevent all of this physical and financial suffering, what gives?” She then goes on to voice several opinions about why it is that people decide not to get vaccinated, including the problem of misinformation on the internet. But what she says has a ring of truth to it. We as humans tend to look for information that backs up what we already believe. So, if we believe that flu shots will give us the flu, we can sure find information/opinions out there that will back that

The caller says he works for the Social Security Administration and needs your personal information — like your Social Security number — to increase your benefits payments. (Or he threatens to cut off your benefits if you don’t give the information.) But it’s not really the Social Security Administration calling. Yes, it is the SSA’s real phone number, but the scammers on the phone are spoofing the number to make the call look real. What can you do if you get one of these calls? Hang up. Remember: • SSA will not threaten you. Real SSA employees will never threaten you to get personal information. They also won’t promise to increase your benefits in exchange for information. If they do, it’s a scam. • If you have any doubt, hang up and call SSA directly. Call 1-800772-1213 – that really is the phone number for the Social Security Administration. If you dial that number, you know who you’re getting. But remember that you can’t trust caller ID. If a call comes in from that number, you can’t be sure it’s really SSA calling. • If you get a spoofed call, report it. If someone calls, claiming to be from SSA and asking for information like your Social Security number, report it to SSA’s Office of Inspector General at 1-800-2690271 or https://oig.ssa. gov/report. Top 10 car seat safety mistakes More than 64,000 babies were born in Colorado in 2017. The numbers for 2018 aren’t out yet, but in all likelihood, plenty of new parents across the state have questions about how to best care for their newborn. Car Seats Colorado, a joint effort between the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the Colorado State Patrol (CSP), would like to help new parents avoid some common mistakes

when buying, installing or securing their child in a car seat. These common pitfalls include: 1. Accepting a used car seat without knowing its entire history. Even if it’s not visible, car seats that have been in a crash can have structural damage. And most car seats expire after six years — partly because summer heat, winter cold and year-round sunshine break down and weaken seat materials over time.

All new car seats have to pass the same stringent crash safety standards set by the federal government. Infant car seats can cost as little as $40 and are just as safe as those that will run you $400 or more. 3. Failing to check for recalls. There are hundreds of car seat models under recall by manufacturers. Last year alone, recalls affected 755,000 individual car seats. Take the time to see if yours is on the list every few months to make sure a new recall hasn’t been issued. You can also register for recall alerts at CarSeatsColorado.com to ensure you get timely recall information from the manufacturer. 4. Strapping in a baby wearing bulky winter clothes. Car seat straps need to be snug to protect a child in the event of a crash. Bulky winter coats or snowsuits create room between the straps and the child, increasing the force of an impact. 5. Attaching toys or after-market add-ons to the car seat. Toys, cup holders, rear-seat mirrors or anything else not originally included with the car seat can act as a projectile during a crash. Keep the seat and surrounding area free from clutter. 6. Moving your child to the next car seat before they’re ready. A child’s

Reframing how we think about aging: Workshop comes to Montrose Senior Community Care PACE, a program of Volunteers of America and Region 10 are pleased to host an upcoming workshop that addresses the topic of “ageism.” The workshop is based on NextFifty Initiative’s innovative partnership with Rose Community Foundation entitled “Changing the Narrative in Colorado,” a strategic communications campaign designed to change the way we think, talk and act about aging and ageism. “We are thrilled to announce that we are bringing this workshop to Montrose,” said Janine Vanderburg, presenter for Changing the Narrative. “The workshops will provide attendees tools to tell the story of aging and ageism in a new way — an effective way that is based on research conducted by the FrameWorks Institute, a national communications firm.” The workshop will focus on the following teaching points: • Why telling a new story about aging and ageism is so important. • What the general public believes about older people and about aging in America. • What ageism is, and how when ageism is directed against older people, the harmful effects it has not only on older people but also on our communities and economy. • The benefits to older adults of having positive views of aging. • Evidence-based messaging and communications strategies based on three years of research by FrameWorks Institute that have been proven to shift public opinion in a positive direction, to increase support for age-friendly policies and to decrease bias against older people. • How words and phrases in common use can have negative consequences that we don’t intend because they reinforce ageist attitudes and prejudicial stereotypes about older people. The workshop is designed for those who

communicate the most about their organization, including executive directors or managers, staff who work in fundraising and marketing, and staff who work directly with the aging population. A three-hour workshop is being offered on Feb. 6 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Montrose Pavilion. Putting baby in front of an air bag. Unless you’re driving a two-seat pickup truck, your infant should never be in the front seat. If you must, make sure the air bag is turned off — the force of the bag deployment can cause serious injury. 10. Throwing away an old car seat. Scott Esser died Jan. 9, 2019, at his home in Delta. He was 49. Funeral services were held Jan. 14 at the General Assembly and Church of the Firstborn in Delta. Burial followed at Pea Green Cemetery. Scott Dwayne Esser was born to Twila Esser on July 4, 1969. He was a farm boy, born and raised in Delta. He graduated from Delta High School in 1988 and worked as an equipment operator for Montrose County Road and Bridge. On April 22, 1995, he married Sarah Sweet in Delta. On Dec. 2, 1984, he was baptized into the General Assembly and Church of the Firstborn. He enjoyed his church family and gospel music. He also enjoyed farming, his cows, running heavy equipment, traveling, gardening, aircraft, helping those in need and spending time with his family. Jacqueline Mihelich

Jacqueline “Jackie” June Mihelich of Grand Junction died Jan. 3, 2019, at HopeWest Care Center in Grand Junction. She was 88. She was born April 1, 1930, in Phoenix, Ariz., to Audre and Helen Wells. She grew up in Pueblo and graduated from Central High School. She married John “Bob” Mihelich and they moved to Gunnison while he finished his college degree. They then moved to Hotchkiss where he taught until his retirement. Mrs. Mihelich was an assistant preschool teacher for handicapped children at the Sunshine School for 17 years. She also drove their transportation bus. She was

named Employee of the Year while at Sunshine School. Having two handicapped children of her own gave her compassion for the students. Her husband died in a car accident in January 2001, and in 2003 she moved from her home on Redlands Mesa outside Hotchkiss to Grand Junction. She enjoyed traveling, especially cruises, and spending time with her family. She is survived by her daughters, Debbie (Sam) Denison of Hotchkiss, Valerie Mihelich of Delta and Melinda (David) Tate of Loveland; son, Marty Mihelich of Delta; grandchildren, Jesse (Rhonda) Denison of Denver, Kari Denison of Hotchkiss, Rebekah (Noah) Davis of Lancaster, Pa., Rachel and Elizabeth Tate of Loveland; great-granddaughters, Shelby and Amelia Denison of Denver; sisters, Barbara Caffey of Bowie, Md., and Janice Johnson of Grand Junction; brother, Larry Wells of Ordway; and extended family. Peggy Clements

Margaret “Peggy” Clements of Paonia died Jan. 13, 2019 at her home just six weeks short of her 105th birthday. Margaret Elizabeth Durbin was born on March 1, 1914, in Taylorville, Ill. She attended grade school in a oneroom schoolhouse and went to boarding school in Springfield, Ill., for high school. On May 28, 1933, she married Kenneth E. Clements. They lived in Illinois, then moved to Phoenix, Ariz., after World War II. While in Phoenix, Mrs. Clements worked as a secretary, bookkeeper and tax preparer. The Clements were active in square dancing and a local theater group. She was also active in her church, where she started the Ladies Sodality, a newsletter that is still published to date. She went to college in her 50s and won a Wall Street Journal award for journalism. The Clements moved to Paonia in 1974 where she stayed active with church activities and started a charismatic prayer group. Mrs. Clements was a member of the Lambert Grange and served as secretary for years. Her lemon meringue pie won the prize at the Mountain Harvest Festival two years in a row, and in her 70s, she started raising rabbits and learned how to tan hides. She turned pelts into pillows, purses and other gifts for her family.

She is survived by four children; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 17 great-greatgrandchildren; and extended family. Rosary will be recited from 6-7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Paonia. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial to follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Lawrence Fisk Herbert was born May 2, 1953, in Denver to Ann and Bill Herbert. He died Dec. 29, 2018, at the age of 65. He was a competitive skier until a ski accident. Despite the injury, which made walking a challenge, he graduated from the University of Colorado and became a financial advisor. He retired to Paonia. Ridgway State Park plans full moon hike If you’re looking for a howling good time, plan to take a hike under the full moon at Ridgway State Park Saturday, Jan. 19. The park will supply snowshoes for adults and children if necessary. Meet at the park visitors’ center at 6:30 p.m. Park staff will lead the hike and also explain the lunar eclipse that will occur the next night, Jan. 20, when the earth comes directly between the moon and the sun. That celestial event is known as the “Full Blood Wolf

Ag conference geared to farmers, gardeners Local farmers and ranchers take center stage with nationally known speakers at the seventh annual Western Colorado Food and Farm Forum Jan. 25-26 in Montrose.

Friday half day sessions are held at the Montrose Fairgrounds and Saturday workshops at the Montrose Pavilion. The conference theme of “Healthy Fields, Farm-

agricultural issues will find sessions geared to their interests. Joel Salatin, known as the “most famous farmer in America,” kicks off the conference. His hilarious and insightful delivery illuminates how farmers can create a healthy bottom line and still manage to create balance between life and work. The author of 12 books, Salatin also presents a session called, “Dancing with Dinner: Healing the Nutritional Deficit in the Urban Rural Divide Rural.” This session is open to the public and will begin at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Healthy Fields theme features sessions highlighting local innovative soil health practices. George Rosenbaum of Olathe details his innovative use of cover crops to build soil health on his hog farm. Bill Parker of Gunnison offers the half-day session, “Performance Based Planned Grazing” and Paonia producer Jacob Gray presents “Pastured Poultry Principles.” Jen Mueller of Yurtstead Farm near Olathe presents “Low Tech Low Cost Season Extension.” With 30 years of local experience, Dave Dearstyne looks at the benefits of integrating livestock with cover crops to build soil health. Creating a habitat for pollinators and managing risks from invasive species is the topic of Mesa County entomologist Meredith Schrader. The Healthy Farmers theme acknowledges the fact that agriculture is a stressful, risky business that involves long hours and the pressures of managing relationships while typically running a family business. The recent

drought put even more pressure on local producers. Sessions addressing this theme include Ben Hartman, author of The Lean Farm, who delivers a plenary session titled “What’s Wrong with A Farmer Working a 35Hour Week?” Additional sessions include “The Power of Healthy Teams” and “How to Enjoy Farming Again,” presented by the Center for Mental Health. These sessions deal with how to manage stress through improving communications, managing teams and developing coping skills. Healthy Futures takes a look at the relevance of the emerging technology, including Blockchain for the family farm. Additional future forward topics include “Top Ten Mega Trends You Can Use: Predicting the Future in A Fickle Market” with Sylvia Tawse and Kenny Meyers, local forager for Whole Foods Markets. Dr. Janelle Peck looks at future weather patterns specific to western Colorado, climate change predictions, and creating weather ready operations. Land Link helps producers create a

future by helping farmers access land for lease. This theme is rounded out by a session on the future of cider making in Colorado with heirloom apples and how to plan a secure future with local financial planner Lisa Isaacson, CPA Teresa Campbell and Jim Plumhoff, attorney. Friday’s half-day sessions offer an opportunity for in-depth learning and include the Western Colorado Water Workshop. In the afternoon, a session geared from crop producers is led by Ben Hartman called “Lean Concepts Applied to Crop Production.” For livestock producers, Bill Parker of Parker Pastures delves into planned grazing, how to create drought reserves and maximizing livestock performance. With Gavan’s four-year term as PUC commissioner starting this month, he officially stepped down from DMEA’s board of directors. “I have truly enjoyed being a part of this wonderful organization [DMEA] and seeing it deliver so much good for our communities. His resignation became

We believe he will be an excellent commissioner and that all of Colorado will benefit from him serving in that capacity. Orchard City passes tiny home codes BY EMY LYNN ROQUE CISNEROS Staff Writer

The Orchard City Board of Trustees convened its first regular meeting of the year on Jan. 9. The meeting was short, with no visitors or constituents desiring to speak. First, the trustees discussed and voted on the 2018 ordinance for tiny home building regulations. Trustee Mel Cook abstained from voting due to conflict of interest; he currently owns a tiny home and is building a second one. The item barely passed with two of the trustees voting no and three voting yes. Trustee Jan Gage noted she wanted a moratorium put on tiny homes until after the community survey. Before this ordinance, tiny homes were actually allowed in Orchard City, though building inspector Bruce Stanley had to interpret building code for them a bit differently.

This ordinance adopts an appendix from 2018 codes to better fit regulations for tiny home builds. For example, instead of putting in a stairwell this allows a home of 400 square feet or less to have a ladder to a loft. The other two business items passed without debate — the amendment to subdivision and land improvement regulations and adoption of the multi-jurisdictional hazard mitigation plan for Delta County. Other than the water committee (see related story), no other trustees or staff had anything to report. Barring special meetings or holidays, the Orchard City Board of Trustees meet for a work session on the first Wednesday of each month and for a regular meeting on the second Wednesday. Meetings are held at 7 p.m. at 9661 2100 Road in Austin. The public is encouraged to attend.

Orchard City hopes for faster fixes for chronic water leaks BY EMY LYNN ROQUE CISNEROS Staff Writer

Last month, the Orchard City water committee voiced concerns over the accuracy of the new water meters. November’s report showed a one percent leak percentage — a strange anomaly given the usual double digit percentage of loss. Thankfully, the committee reported this month that the meters do seem to be reporting more accurately. The leak percentage came in at 23 percent for December. However, this likely means more leaks exist than was previously thought. The reason for this is because if water usage decreases, as it does during the winter, but the leak percentage increases, then it’s likely because a leakage is causing more water to be output than billed. Essentially, the leaks stay the same making the loss percentage rise. For comparison, Trustee Dick Kirkpatrick showed that the leak percentage sticks around seven to 13 percent in the summer and rises to the twenties in the winter. He also noted that the figures displayed in the report are actually after the “acceptable loss percentage” has been removed. The meters tag team read-

ing, with one recording under 30 gallons per minute (gpm) and the other kicking in above that to maximum flow. The old meter couldn’t read under 30 gpm so when winter volume dips it wouldn’t read low flows. Staff will run some more tests, but Kirkpatrick said, “so far this shows there’s about another 5,000 gallons going down the west line that we weren’t accounting for previously.” Part of the resolution to fix these leaks will be the water improvements planned for the next several years. The committee is still working to see how the town will pay for improvements, but they think the projects will actually be completed sooner than thought. Trustee Doug Keller and Kirkpatrick will each look at the plans to “tighten up the timelines.” For example, Kirkpatrick is working on a plan to get all projects done in the next five to eight years. The current plan spreads them out every two years which will take 20 years. Additionally, the team will need to consider adding in continuous upgrades. “With our system as long and old as it is there needs to be some continuous annual construction being done,” said Kirkpatrick.

Keep it coming

This winter the Grand Mesa has received over 176 inches of snowfall since October. To clarify, that’s more than 14 feet. Looking at the snow drifts this might be hard to believe since snow depth is at most about 44 inches, or 3.6 feet. Hopefully January will exceed averages of 50 to 80 inches of snow to relieve worries of another drought. Two years ago Grand Mesa Lodge recorded 115 inches in January. On an average year the Grand Mesa area will receive about 425 inches of snowfall during the season. February and March usually see the most precipitation/snow because of spring rains.

Cedaredge to add subdivision; cottage homes predicted BY EMY LYNN ROQUE CISNEROS Staff Writer

On Thursday, Jan. 10, the Cedaredge board of trustees convened for a work session discussing two items: contract revisions from Western Gravel Constructors (WGC) and a proposal for Orchard Meadows subdivision. The contract revision targeted three areas of overrun costs on the Highway 65 waterline project, which Western Gravel Construction stated isn’t its responsibility. Town administrator Greg Brinck went over the request with the trustees, clarifying that the town would be able to pay WGC through its current loans and “this wouldn’t be cash out of the town’s pocket.” The areas of overrun were: traffic control ($85,000), American iron and steel and approved equals ($26,500), asphalt patching ($3,000) and differing site conditions and field changes ($8,800). In total, WGC requested an additional $122,141.75. The company explained that per the contract it’s allowed a 15 percent markup and this falls under that allowable fixed fee.

“Being a contractor isn’t easy,” said trustee Allan Smith regarding the difficulties contractors face when making accurate bids. Essentially, WGC failed to account for several items in its initial bid, including CDOT expectations on traffic control, the time constraints on using less costly steel, the cost of asphalt for patching and need to use thrust blocks (the lack of which caused a leak on S. Eagle and Highway 65). After discussing each area of the proposal, the trustees concluded that they outlined expectations clearly in the original contract and the overrun costs were “not the burden of the town.” To maintain a good working relationship with WGC and because they felt satisfied with the finished project, the trustees agreed to meet WGC in the middle with about 55 percent of its request. “I can live with that since we’re not much over the estimated costs we planned originally,” said Mayor Pro-tem Ray Hanson. “But I think in their original bid they skipped a lot.” They asked Brinck to discuss with WGC a change

Outdoorsman shares experiences of Alaska adventures, poetry BY EMY LYNN ROQUE CISNEROS Staff Writer

A modest crowd of about 40 attendees gathered for an afternoon of storytelling and poetry Dec. 30 at the Grand Mesa Arts & Event Center. As the last event for 2018, this matinee featured guest AJ Slagle sharing true stories from his Alaskan adventures and reciting poetry by Robert Service from the gold rush era. His new mother-in-law and local community member Phyliss Hoffman introduced Slagle. She described him as an “avid outdoorsman” and “romantic poet.” “I’ve seen nature at its best and its worst,” commented Slagle in his welcome. And he would know, having spent most of life, and career, in the Alaska Panhandle. He worked primarily in Ketchikan — five years in the logging industry, six years in aviation, eight years as a big game guide with 18 brown bear kills and 18 seasons working on fishing excursions. Poetry comes into the mix thanks to Service’s book, “Spell of the Yukon,” which Slagle has carried with him since 1986. The result? Many of the poems are now committed to

memory, allowing him to recite them with passion and detail. He said the words “explain a lot about Alaska.” During the 90-minute program, Slagle alternated between telling a story and following it with a poem that best resonated with the emotions he wished to portray. For example, Slagle recounted one of his favorite memories, filled with excitement and awe. He was 26 and hiking in a remote location in Southeast Alaska when he suddenly realized a brown bear was close — within 800 feet. “The experience was truly remarkable,” he said. Usually these animals can sense when someone is nearby, but Slagle said he was able to watch unnoticed. The poem following, “The Rhyme of the Remittance Man,” he described as best correlating to the feelings he had after the experience. “I am signed and sealed to nature. Be it so,” ends the poem. Slagle’s interest in poetry began when he was little. He recalled sitting on his grandfather’s lap listening to “I Have But Fifty Cents.” Being in areas so remote many are only accessible by plane, Slagle found comfort in

the poems of Service. “I just desired the flavor of the country and enjoyed his work,” he said. As for Slagle’s stories, they were filled with triumph and close calls. One detailed how he battled 60 mph winds and the tides in an effort to protect a boating dock. Many times he had to travel in below freezing and unstable conditions, overcoming “nature flexing her muscles.” He summarized that his adventures have taught him self-reliance and to appreciate life. He loves the outdoors primarily because he can “go out and soak up the sounds and wind, and it’s totally soothing to the soul.” Slagle ended his program with a chilling wolf call, capturing the essence of the last frontier. order which should make the final project cost an even $1,000,000. “I do want to clarify that I see no anger in this,” said Mayor Gene Welch. “It’s simply WGC trying to see how we can come to an agreement.” If WGC agrees to the negotiation, this item will be on the regular meeting agenda. Next, John Peters, a county commissioner in Ouray and owner of John Peters & Associates, approached the board about Orchard Meadows subdivision. He is responsible for Stone Bridge and Stonegate developments in Cedaredge. Peters originally began planning for the 9.51-acre subdivision around 2006. When the economy crashed, he postponed his plans. With the economy rebounding he hopes to resume the Orchard Meadows subdivision this spring. “We’re trying to get into a smaller home size to keep costs down,” he said. The purpose is to create “attainable housing.” These homes would be in the $160,000 to $200,000 range. “Our main issue is that land is expensive here,” he said. “We’ve started thinking outside the box a bit and think we can build the homes for less than modulars if we’re smart about it.” This smart thinking would include cottage-like homes, with garages in the back and a shared driveway. Some might be patio style, others duplexes. The overall size would be 800 to 1,000 square feet. He proposed the idea of removing the tap fee and building it into the homeowner’s water bill, but trustees didn’t like that idea. All of the trustees showed great interest in Peters’ plans and asked him to resume the project with the planning and zoning commission by presenting some new plans outlining the smaller home styles. The subdivision will likely be built in phases as to “not get too carried away.” Next week’s regular meeting will feature a public hearing for two liquor license modifications for Cedaredge Foodtown and Creekside Cafe. Next the trustees will hear from the planning and zoning commission and Cedaredge tree board. Surface Creek Animal Shelter and Cedaredge Area Chamber of Commerce will present, as they do regularly. Regarding business items, two memorandum of understandings, the two liquor license modifications, two ordinances and a resolution will require action from the trustees. The ordinances allow alcoholic beverage tasting permits and amends code to reflect state statutory title changes. The resolution adopts the 2018 table for building permit fees.

CUMC to show film in conjunction with Martin Luther King Jr. Day Cedaredge United Methodist Church will mark the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday with a showing of “Soundtrack for a Revolution,” the acclaimed documentary produced by Bill Guttentag, Dan Sturman and others. The film, which will be shown at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21 at the church, examines the importance of music during the U.S. Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. The sit-ins and public demonstrations of the era incorporated protest songs,

folk tunes and spirituals, music that was a crucial part of the movement. Guttentag uses archival footage and interviews to connect specific songs — covered by artists including the Roots and John Legend — to specific events, such as the Montgomery bus boycott. The church’s pastor, the Rev. Joe Agne, will lead a conversation following the film during which he’ll share his experience as a campus civil-rights activist and organizer in the Chicago area in the 1960s. In its

history of Dr. King’s time in Chicago, the Martin Luther King Jr. Research and Education Institute says on its website: “Jan. 7, 1966, Martin Luther King and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) announced plans for the Chicago Freedom Movement, a campaign that marked the expansion of their civil rights activities from the South to northern cities. King and his family moved to ... Chicago ... so that he could be closer to the movement.” The Chicago Campaign began in 1965 when Chicago civil rights groups invited King to lead a demonstration against de facto segregation in education, housing and employment. The Coordinating Council of Community Organizations (CCCO), convened by Chicago activist Albert Raby, asked SCLC to join them in a major nonviolent campaign geared specifically at achieving fair housing practices. The campaign gained momentum through demonstrations and marches. CCCO, a coalition of numerous organizations working for civil rights, included outreach to Chicago area colleges, including North Central College where Agne was a student. He was chosen to represent the college on the coordinating council,

Cedaredge High School student Keaton Sheppard received Student of the Month from the Orchard City Board of Trustees for December. Sheppard is a senior with a 4.05 GPA who loves tractors and imaginary games. “I loved seeing tractors designed for a speciﬁc purpose come together to make projects run efﬁciently,” he said. “This passion allows me to create worlds for myself where I would run my own projects and help people from all over.” Now he wants to use that passion to become a mechanical engineer. He said, “I want to be a leader among the people that will inspire hope and curiosity.”

Agne led a contingent of more than 100 of the campus’ 800 students that participated in training events, demonstrations, marches and protests. As part of his discussion of the film, Agne will lead those attending in singing songs he learned during these years including “We Shall Not Be Moved” and “Oh Freedom.” Much of Agne’s ministry has been working for racial justice. Plan now to remember Dr. King by viewing the documentary and joining the conversation at Cedaredge United Methodist Church.

There are about 40 coats for children, youth and adult women and men. Being warm this winter can be as simple as dropping by the church at the corner of NW 3rd Street and Aspen Avenue during these hours. Church member and Cedaredge resident Steve Countryman is organizing the coat distribution. Fellow member Walt Anderson, a Cedaredge woodworker and furniture maker, crafted the oversized manger in which the coats were collected during the Advent and Christmas seasons

from wood donated by his neighbor Bill Sheffield. The coats are lightly worn and looking for new owners. The church decided to collect coats for those in need after studying a passage from the Gospel of Luke in which Jesus’ cousin, John the Baptist, responded to a crowd that asked him how they could be faithful to God. John the Baptist told the crowd: “Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none.” The coats were blessed during worship Jan. 6.

Garden club prepares for interesting year of programs BY JOAN CHAMBER Plant & Dig Garden Club

Friday, Dec. 14, found the members of the Plant & Dig Garden club gathered in a very nice private room at the Creekside Restaurant (different from what had been reported in last month’s article) for our annual Christmas gathering and gift exchange. Gloria Good, our outgoing president, started the festivities off with questions for everyone about Christmas. Many answers were hilarious, making everyone laugh; others were thoughtful, giving us all a moment to reflect upon our own experiences of Christmases past. Then came wonderful fare from Creekside’s kitchens which we enjoyed with relish. Our gift exchange this year was great fun, as usual, with a wonderful variety of garden-oriented gifts that got passed around at the whims of many of the members — to the chagrin of some and the delight of others. But everyone in the end had a smile upon her face, heading home with a new treasure. Time

is well spent when we spend it having fun with friends. Our upcoming January meeting will see the installation of new officers who will serve for the next two years. Afterwards, members will bring forth their ideas for programs at our monthly meetings throughout 2019. This schedule will be announced in the February article. We look forward to carrying on our tradition of learning about every phase of gardening and garden-related activities. We wish to thank our outgoing officers (Gloria Good and Waynella Gonzalez as co-presidents, Lisa Joss, our outstanding secretary — who will continue in this role, and Barb Klein who has acted for the past few years as treasurer) for their wonderful devotion to making our club function smoothly. Dirt flies at ball complex groundbreaking BY TAMIE MECK Staff Writer

Delta County Commissioner Mark Roeber remembers when the ball fields located at the Delta County Fairgrounds in Hotchkiss were first built. It was then-commissioner Ted Hayden and others, he recalled, who led the charge to get the fields approved. That was about the time that Hotchkiss High School was built, said Roeber. Known at the time, before the grass was established, as the “Dust Bowl,” the name doesn’t apply today, said Roeber. The first couple of years the fields were used, he said, “It really was a true dust bowl.” “It was probably about the time they built the (Hotchkiss) high school,” said Roeber. The fields were seen as “an interim stop-gap measure” while ball fields could be built near the high school. Thanks to a partnership between the North Fork Pool, Parks and Recreation District and the Hotchkiss Home Plate youth baseball program, the years-long dream of building those fields is now a reality. On Saturday, the two organizations were joined by a small and enthusiastic crowd

to celebrate groundbreaking of the Crossroads Park Ball Field Complex. The complex will be located on Bulldog Street adjacent to Hotchkiss High School. NFPPR district administrator Lenore Cambria recalled that when the district was approached by Hotchkiss Home Plate about building the complex, “The board said ok, let’s do it.” Cambria thanked a long list of contributors, beginning with major funders Great Outdoors Colorado and Department of Local Affairs. El Pomar, the Gates Family Foundation, Daniels Fund, Hotchkiss Lions Club, Town of Hotchkiss, and several individuals also contributed to the project. Cambria gave special thanks to the family of Tom Roberts. Sixteen years ago, the family set aside $5,000 in seed money for a youth baseball project. Roberts was a big supporter of little league baseball. All of the kids playing baseball “were his little snickelfritz,” said Roberts’ widow, Lynette Roberts. The people who donated in his memory “will hopefully be happy that those funds went directly to a good cause.” She thanked those who

Dixie Luke’s grandfather once talked of the days when farmers on Rogers Mesa would take teams of horses up Leroux Creek in the 1920s and 1930s to work on the nascent reservoirs that would capture runoff from the Grand Mesa. Others up in the Paonia area were busy digging canals. They were working together, said Luke, often in uncomfortable conditions, toward a common vision: to bring irrigation water to the farms, orchards and ranches in the North Fork Valley. Luke, whose family has ranched in the North Fork area for more than a century, shared her story at the Jan. 8 groundbreaking ceremony for the Fire Mountain Canal Improvement Project. The ceremony was followed by a luncheon and presentation at Memorial Hall in Hotchkiss. Just 24 hours after taking office, Sheriff Mark Taylor coordinated a massive investigation into a suspected drug lab in the garage of a residence on Highway 133 in Paonia. The initial tip was given to a patrol deputy, who passed the information to a sheriff ’s investigator. After diligent investigation and surveillance, sheriff ’s investigators were able to obtain a search warrant for the home. According to a press release issued by the sheriff ’s office, investigators received information leading them to believe the lab in question was an active meth or MDMA (Ecstacy) lab. Both are highly dangerous and addictive drugs. “Due to the hazardous chemicals associated with the production of these dangerous drugs, the DEA was contacted and they provided invaluable assistance,” Sheriff Taylor said. Teams of trained specialists came from California and Salt Lake City. “We would like to thank the DEA for providing drug chemists, evidence specialists and a hazardous materials cleanup crew through the Colorado National Guard,” said Sheriff Taylor. “The sheriff ’s office would like to thank these agencies for their support in safely removing a large quantity of toxic chemicals that pose an environmental and public safety risk from our community.” Due to the fact the search warrant was for a drug lab within 1,000 feet of Paonia Junior-Senior High School, Paonia schools were asked to

shelter in place prior to the execution of the search warrant. At approximately 11:25 a.m., law enforcement closed Highway 133 for a brief period of time to ensure the safety of all personnel involved. Upon executing the search warrant, an active drug lab was discovered inside the garage of the property. According to the press release, DEA agents and chemists said the lab was one of the largest home-based operations discovered in recent years. Investigators and cleanup crews were on-scene for over 12 hours to ensure all the toxic chemicals were safely removed from the scene. At this time, the sheriff ’s office is waiting on lab results from the DEA chemists who assisted in the search to determine if the chemicals involved were for the production of methamphetamine or MDMA (ecstasy). A suspect believed to be responsible for the lab is in custody in Michigan on other drug charges. An adult female was located at the residence as well, but her level of involvement at this time is under investigation. “I would like to commend our investigators for an excellent job in identifying an

The project will prevent an estimated 2,365 tons of salt per year from entering into the Colorado River Basin. The Upper Colorado basin is “where a lot of water and salt loads are generated that affect critical habitat for four endangered fish species

in the Colorado River and its tributaries,” said Dave Kanzer, deputy chief engineer for the CRD. “So what we do has large implications to the Upper Colorado River Basin, and in fact, all seven states in the whole Colorado River Basin.” About $1.154 million from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) will go toward delivery system efficiency improve-

ments. The remaining funds come from the North Fork Water Conservancy District, Colorado Water Conservation Board, Gunnison Basin Roundtable Water Supply Reserve Fund, and FMCRC. Kanzer and Sonja Chavez, water resources specialist for the CRD, are credited with bringing Reclamation and the NRCS together to fund an irrigation efficiency project. The key, said Chavez, “was to get them talking to one another.” If the CRD could coordinate off-farm types of improvements with onfarm irrigation efficiency and pressurized deliveries like gated pipe, “we could create a win-winwin situation.” Because Reclamation’s funding process favors more cost-effective salinity-reducing projects, RCCP funds were used to buy down the project’s cost per ton for salt control, “which ensured that our partners were awarded funds,” said Chavez. Brent Newman is with the Colorado Water Conservation Board, the state’s primary water policy and project funding agency. When people ask what type of project the CWCB wants to support,” said Newman, “You don’t

have to look any further than this one. This is an ideal, model project.” Fire Mountain is the first large project being built under the umbrella of the Lower Gunnison Project, a cooperative project to increase water use efficiency and agricultural productivity in the Lower Gunnison Basin. Other projects are in the works for the Bostwick Park Water District, Uncompahgre Valley Water Users Association, and Crawford Water Conservancy District. The Fire Mountain project is one part of the big picture for the FMCRC, said superintendent Steve Fletcher. They were recently awarded a Reclamation Small-Scale Water Efficiency grant for a supervisory control and data acquisition, or SCADA monitoring and control project that would tie in to existing stream gauges on Muddy and Anthracite creeks. The system will provide more effective water turnout and system control and help extend the irrigation season. Last year, said Fletcher, dam tender for the Paonia Reservoir, the FMCRC was relying 100 percent on stored water when the canal shut down Aug. 4. That

marked the fourth time since the Paonia Reservoir first spilled in 1962 that the canal shut down before the end of growing season. With the system in place, say, a heavy rainfall above the reservoir increases Anthracite Creek by 100 cubic feet per second. Sensors at the dam would automatically reduce flow from the reservoir by the same amount, allowing more water to remain in storage for later use. That project is slated for completion this spring. The FMCRC is also investigating the possibility of building a small regulating reservoir above Rogers Mesa that would eventually tie into the SCADA system. Sen. Michael Bennet issued a press release applauding the project. In 2014 Bennet opened up funding eligibility in the Lower Gunnison Basin by securing Critical Conservation Area designation for the Colorado River Basin. A member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, through the 2014 Farm Bill he helped secure $8 million for the CRD project in the lower Gunnison Basin. In the 2018 Farm Bill recently passed by Congress, Bennet worked to reauthorize and increase RCPP

funding. “Because our parents and grandparents made necessary investments in water infrastructure, agriculture has thrived on the Western Slope,” said Bennet. With demands on rivers increasing and populations growing, “Collaborative efforts like the Fire Mountain Canal Improvement Project are critical to making irrigation systems more efficient to support our agricultural economy.” In looking to the future, “The best thing right now is to help create more efficient water distribution systems, address water and soil quality, and make it easier for growers to get their products to the market,” said Andy Mueller, manager of the Colorado River District. “In times of drought, that efficient application of water becomes more important.” In order to get maximum benefit out of the water available, “We need to reach out to a variety of sources to help us push these projects forward,” said Alvey. “In these days of drafting drought contingency plans, we think it’s going to have large benefits to all our water users. We think it’s a model for what can be done going forward.”

Crawford okays kitchen rental to local garlic farmer BY RANDY SUNDERLAND General Manager

In December, Jan Hoffman of J&M Farm near Crawford, approached town council to ask if it would consider a reduced rate for extended use of the commercial kitchen at Crawford Town Council. She was asked to come back in January with a written proposal. Hoffman explained her business to the trustees during the December meeting. The farm grows several varieties of garlic, which are then processed into seasoned salt and other products. She has been using the commercial kitchen at Edesia Community Kitchen in Paonia, and would like to process closer to home and reduce her costs. In her proposal to the

Town of Crawford, Hoffman offered $185 per month to use the kitchen. Her need is seasonal, mainly in the fall months. She is willing to remove her materials and equipment when others rent the facilities — such as for wedding receptions and special events. During the discussion at the Jan. 9 regular meeting of the Crawford Town Council, trustee Mike Tiedeman said he liked the proposal. “The only question I have is on what you would pay.” Trustee Hetty Todd added, “I like it ... although $185 seems high per month.” Tiedeman said, “So do I, perhaps we could prorate that over the days of actual use.” Trustee Jessica Hart

agreed, saying, “I also agree we should prorate. Your proposal shows January through April is low use, and you should not be paying for the facility when you aren’t using it.” Hoffman said she proposed a monthly rate to help the town in its budgeting process, to have an understanding how much revenue to expect. After her first year’s experience, Hoffman believes the heaviest months would be from August to the end of the year.

“I think it is good for business in town,” said trustee John Paton. He suggested the town and Hoffman could try it and fine tune the agreement as they go. Tiedeman made a motion to charge F&M Farm $10 per day for the days it uses the facility at Crawford Town Hall. Chris Johnson amended the motion to make the agreement for one year, and to revisit it to make sure it is working for both parties. It was approved unanimously.

Paonia residents reminded to clear snow and ice BY TAMIE MECK Staff Writer

The Paonia Police Department reminds the public that with snowfall comes a reminder to clear sidewalks. In light of recent snowstorms, the department has begun enforcement of town code addressing snow and ice removal from sidewalks. Trustee Bill Bear brought the issue up at the Jan. 8 board meeting. Bear said he noticed that following recent snowstorms, a lot of people are making an effort to clear their sidewalks, “But there are some who are not doing anything.” Police Chief Neil Ferguson said officers have begun enforcement efforts in the downtown area and monitoring neighborhoods. In the

past, said Ferguson, they have attempted to issue warnings prior to issuing citations. Red tags are placed on the doors of residences and businesses not in compliance with town code, which states that property owners and occupants “having a sidewalk or walkway on or adjacent to the premises shall have the duty to keep the sidewalk clear of snow and ice.” In residential areas, removal should occur within 24 hours of accumulation, while in the core downtown commercial district and on public walkways, snow and ice “shall be removed by 9:00 a.m.” Those who ignore the red tag for 24 hours or more will be issued a citation, said Ferguson.

Gauge McGraw, a Hotchkiss ﬁrst grader, won the December prize drawing for participating in the Passport to Health program offered by Delta County Libraries. The program, aimed at encouraging youth to make healthy choices, offered incentives for completing health-related activities during the months of October, November and December. The program ran in conjunction with the Discover Health exhibit at Delta Library. Gauge was all smiles when he claimed his prize, a cornhole yard game sponsored by Delta Family Center. “He was thrilled to win,” says Sarah Smith, staff member at Hotchkiss Library. Luckily, the cold, snowy weather will not keep Gauge from trying out his new game. According to his mother, Desiree McGraw, they have a place in their basement where they can set it up right away.

Hotchkiss marshal gives year-end review BY PAT SUNDERLAND Managing Editor

For 2018, the Hotchkiss Marshal’s Office wrote 526 summons, 513 of which concerned traffic violations. A total of 140 warnings were issued; again the vast majority were for traffic offenses. The marshal’s office also logged 908 home and business security checks in 2018. These statistics were included in a written report prepared by Marshal Dan Miller for the town trustees. At their regular meeting on Jan. 10, he noted that traffic counts continue to average 8,500 to 9,000 a day, and speeding continues to be a common viola-

tion, despite the signs that were installed at the three entrances to town in 2018. The new year began with two suicides, two suicide attempts and two death investigations, he added. “We’re hoping for a better rest of the year,” he said. The first trustees meeting of 2019 included some housekeeping items and the consideration of several donation requests. Gordon Hebenstreit and Richard Bailey requested a donation of $500 for the annual Hotchkiss Sheep Camp Stock Dog Trials. This event, now in its 16th year, is the centerpiece

of a number of community events also scheduled over Mother’s Day weekend. “It’s a big weekend for the Town of Hotchkiss,” said Hebenstreit, who estimated paid attendance at 2,500 over a three-day period in 2018. He added that he has to turn away competitors. The 2019 budget included a $500 allocation for the event; trustees unanimously approved payment of the funds. Funds have also been allocated for the Center for Mental Health, which submitted a letter requesting financial support for its mobile crisis team. Trustees

agreed the center’s mental health services are vital, but they tabled the request for funds until a representative can be present to answer questions. A request for financial and in-kind support for Rural Philanthropy Days was also tabled pending more information. A special events liquor license was approved for a Valentine’s dance at the Hotchkiss Elks Lodge, and City Market’s liquor license was modified to reflect the installation of a new, slightly larger refrigerator for beer and wine coolers. Mayor Larry Wilkening discussed the possibility of a county sales

tax to address public safety needs. The county is exploring the possibility of putting the taxing question on the November ballot. Marshall Miller said the tax would generate an estimated $200,000 for the Town of Hotchkiss, which could be used for training, equipment, school resource officers and competitive wages for officers. Trustees voiced their support for the concept but said they would like more information. A power outage on the coldest day of the year caused concern among citizens who did not realize that the fire station is available as

a temporary shelter in such instances. On Jan. 1, EMTs from the North Fork Ambulance Association were also on hand to provide emergency assistance. DMEA restored the power after 2 hours and 20 minutes. Town engineer Joanne Fagan provided an update on the Barrow Mesa water tank project, and Mike Owens, public works director, reported there have been some major issues with the air compressors at the water plant. It looks like it will be cheaper to buy new units than to make repairs. He also introduced Marvin Jackson, a new public works employee.

The Christmas break couldn’t get over with soon enough for Delta High School’s basketball teams. Both the girls and boys teams are having successful seasons so far with the girls showing an 8-1 overall record and 2-0 in 3A WSL play. The Panther boys are currently 7-2 following wins over Roaring Fork and Basalt this past weekend. Delta’s girls slipped past Roaring Fork (0-1, 7-4) on Friday, Jan. 11, 50-48 and cruised past Basalt (0-2, 1-9) on Saturday, 56-15. The boys were 4031 winners against the Rams (0-1, 4-6) on Friday and roared past Basalt (0-2, 2-8), 62-28, on Saturday. Senior John Ames had seven points in the first quarter and Baier had six to spark the big firstquarter run. Ames finished the game with 14 to lead all scorers while Baier had 10. Paonia wrestlers opened the new year at the Tournament of Champions at Vernal, Utah. The annual tournament attracted 30 teams from Utah, Colorado and Wyoming. Eagles wrestlers scored 101 points to place ninth overall in the tournament. Paonia sent two wrestlers into the first-place championship match. Competing at 138 pounds, senior Sackett Chesnik was 4-1 for the tournament, placing a respectable second on a 7-3 loss to senior Donny Proffit (24-1), a three-

time state champion from Kemmerer, Wyo. At 182, senior Anthony Felice scored 26 points for the Eagles. Felice lost by fall (3:42) to senior Parker Gasser, a returning state qualifier from Maple Mountain, Utah. After quarterfinal losses, Zeb Etter (145) and Grey Neal (160) finished sixth. Both Etter and Neal scored 17 team points. Etter, who was seeded 25th, had the largest seed-place difference of the tournament. Also scoring points were 113 Reagan Todd (113), Dawson Morgan (132), and heavyweight Levi Peterson.

Hotchkiss girls win three; boys take two of three last week BY TAMIE MECK DCI Sports Writer

The Hotchkiss girls are well on their way to their first winning record since the 20132014 season after winning straight conference games last week. The Bulldogs stretched their league record to 3-1, their winning streak to four games, and their overall win-loss record to 9-2. In Friday’s 54-16 home win over West Grand (Kremmling), before the Mustangs could score, senior Carson Collins put in 14 points. Collins finished the game with 19 points. Shay Glaser scored 11, and Mariah Griffith and freshman Lottie Hollembeak each scored six. Prior to tip-off, a moment of silence was held in honor of Toby Hargadine, 37, a coach and substitute teacher at West Grand High School who was killed in a vehicle accident on Jan. 3. On Saturday Collins scored 17 and Elsie Vasquez and Shay Glaser both scored nine in the Bulldogs’ 60-23 win over Hayden. On Jan. 8, Hotchkiss blanked Caprock Academy (1-8, 0-4), 76-0. The Bulldogs are currently in third place in 2A/1A Western Slope standings behind Plateau Valley

and Meeker. They host Vail Christian (4-5, 1-2, 2A WSL) at 5 p.m. Friday. In the third quarter of the Hotchkiss boys conference hoops game against West Grand Friday night, the Mustangs looked to be sailing to an easy win. The Bulldogs trailed by two at the half, but a scoring burst by the Mustangs left them trailing by 13 points. But the Dogs didn’t give up. Late in the third, they picked up the pace. Malykai Klaseen went to the line to hit one of two free throws, and with less than a minute left in the period, junior Zac Ziemer powered past the Mustang defense for a lay-up, leaving the bulldogs trailing, 41-34. In the fourth, West Grand quickly ran the lead back to 12 when Bulldog Evan Mattison hit a three-point jump shot from the top of the arc. Mattison added two more points from down low to narrow the Mustangs lead down to seven. With just under five minutes remaining, point guard Marvin Guereque narrowed the lead to five on a jump shot, Jacob Palecki hit his third three-pointer of the night, and with four minutes remaining, the Bulldogs trailed by two.

A free throw by Hunter Bryant narrowed the lead to one. West Grand senior Austin Stauffer scored two quick goals, and with 1:44 to go, a Palecki goal narrowed the Mustangs lead back down to two. The Bulldogs got a break when West Grand defenders Luis Dominguez and Marcus Sanchez both fouled out in the final minute of regulation play. With 17 seconds remaining, Sanchez’s final foul sent Bulldog senior Jacob Stucker to the line to shoot two free throws and send the game into overtime. Mixed results seen in Cedaredge basketball BY NATHAN CLAY DCI Sports Writer

Basketball action heated up Cedaredge on the cold night of Friday, Jan. 11, when the Bruins hosted the Aspen Skiers. The gymnasium at the Bruins’ cave was simmering nicely as the winter weather blustered. A good crowd braved the frigid air outside to cheer its team to victory. The Bruins’ faithful received mixed results that night, but were certainly treated to a good show. The varsity girls tipped off first. The Bruins started the game against Aspen with a very respectable record of 5-2, having won their last two games by a margin of more than 20 points. In truth, this match-up was not much of a contest. Cedaredge performed even better than expected and held Aspen to just 12 points in the entire game, while racking 64 up for themselves. At halftime, the score was

43-4. Sophomore Kammie Henderson led the scoring for the Bruins with a tally of 16. Close behind her teammate was senior Courtney Freeman, with 14 points scored. Another routing of an opponent in their warchest, the Bruins are in fine fettle and should continue their trajectory throughout the season. The men’s varsity tipped off next. The favored Bruins started this game with a winning record of 4-3. Cedaredge was quicker out of the blocks and took an early lead on Aspen. Looking sharper than the Skiers, Cedaredge finished the first quarter ahead by four. Unfortunately for the Bruins, their advantage would not last. The Skiers must have really had their skis waxed up by their coach, because they came onto the court for the second period, sailed by the Bruins and never looked back. The teams

went into the locker room at halftime, Aspen up 2318. The upset would continue in the second half with Aspen outscoring Cedaredge 34-22. The Bruins’ high scorers with 10 points each were sophomore Colby Rupp and senior Jared Reynolds The final score of 5740, will be a famous victory for Aspen this season and a bruise for the Bruins. The big blue bears musn’t hang their heads, there is much yet to play for, and the next game awaits. The Bruins continued their basketball season against the Olathe Pirates on Tuesday, Jan. 22, and travel to Craig, Jan. 19, to confront the Moffat County Bulldogs. As they near the halfway point of the campaign, the ladies will certainly hope to continue their very good run of form, and the men will look to get back to winning ways.

The Paonia girls played two very different basketball games over the weekend. In Friday’s 36-19 loss to the Hayden Tigers (12, 5-6, 2A Western Slope League) the team committed 42 turnovers and missed 21 free throws. “When you do that you’re not going to win very many, if any games at all,” said head coach Scott Rienks. It was an off night, said Rienks, and players were hesitant to shoot. Seven players scored two points or less, and lead scorer Poppy Lightfoot scored two field goals and six points. When the Tigers ran a zone offset,

a mainly man-to-man defense, against Paonia, “We wouldn’t pull the trigger.” After the game Rienks asked players who felt like they’d left everything on the court to raise their hand, “And nobody raised their hand.” Saturday’s 26-20 conference win over West Grand was a different game. Players came out with more confidence and took more shots. Because the Mustangs have height, before the game they discussed moving the ball around more to create opportunities. That helped players like sophomore Allison Godwin, who was named Player of the Game, to take more shots. Light-

foot and Taneal Mautz each scored six, and Carly Horn and Paige Fister each scored a goal. “Last night we probably wouldn’t have shot those,” said Rienks. Against West Grand, “I don’t think we left everything on the floor,” said Rienks. “But tonight we played a little bit harder... We took a step in the right direction.” As for turnovers, “We still got too many, but we cut it down.” The Eagles have two conference games this week, starting at 5:30 p.m. on Friday at Plateau Valley (1-0, 8-1). Paonia begins play at 2:30 p.m. Saturday when they host 3-0, 8-1 Meeker’s Cowboys.

Injury leads to coachng stint for sidelined Paonia athlete, Mautz

The next round of sectional Paonia High School competition is set for Feb. 2 in Montrose at 1 p.m. senior Taralee Mautz was looking forward to her final year of sports. A third-year varsity hitter on the volleyball team, in the third match of the season and she went up for a block. “I just came down wrong,” she said. Because her three siblings had all suffered the same injury, she knew right away that it was a torn ACL in her left knee. Volleyball coach Ce’rra Carsten only coached Mautz in four games, but called her “a very consistent and dedicated player.” While waiting for the final diagnosis, Mautz helped out at practices, running drills, tossing up balls, and working with her replacement at middle hitter, junior Lyla Hayutin-Baril. “Whatever coach needs me to do,” she said. Rather than quit, she committed to finishing the volleyball season with the team. With months of rehab still ahead, she was also going to miss her senior year playing her favorite sport, basketball. She’d made varsity as a freshman, and by her junior year was averaging five points and five rebounds per game and made 46 steals for the season. She would have been one of three seniors on the team. To be a part of the team, Mautz said she knew that coaching was her only option. After three years on the varsity, team manager wasn’t an option, she said. Upon receiving her diagnosis, she sent a text to head basketball coach Scott Rienks, letting him know he has a new assistant coach. “I really value what he has to say,” said Mautz of Rienks, arguably one of the most respected coaches in the state. “He’s a two-time (girls) state champion coach, and I was on one of those teams.” She also wanted

to work with long-time assistant coaches John Blair and Brian Mitchem and “give back to my coaches what they gave to me.” She has one more reason not to quit. Younger sister Taneal is a varsity sophomore on the basketball team and is in the final days of recovering from her own torn ACL. “I kind of want to be an inspiration for her,” said Mautz. “And we wanted to play together forever. So since we can’t play together, I still want to be a part of her sophomore year and high school career.” Mautz, 17, grew up in an active family. Older sister Jesse played sports at Hotchkiss, and brother Tristan averaged more than 11 points per game his senior year when Paonia won the league title and placed fourth in the state. Dad Tony attended college on a basketball scholarship and coached all four kids in AAU. “I’ve just kind of grown up around basketball, and sports in general,” said Mautz. A few weeks into the season, “I feel like I understand the game a lot better,” she said. “It’s kind of like everyone said: I’m learning the game from a different perspective. You definitely understand the little things a lot more and you can see where discipline is lacking. I think, as an athlete, we don’t fully comprehend what the coaches are telling us. But then once you’re on the sideline coaching, you can see the little things that they’ve been telling you.” Working with Rienks has been “a valuable experience,” she said. “If there’s something that he thinks he needs to point out to me that I’m not understanding, he definitely will.” And while the coaches focus on the big picture, she can focus on one individual and point out the little things. “Taralee’s doing a really good job,” said Rienks. Coaches recently assigned her to work with the C and JV teams on in-bounds plays, implementing the plays and following up to make sure they were executed correctly. She’s also enjoying her senior year as a student and has been accepted to Colorado Mesa University. Her favorite subjects are English, and since she’s considering a career in physical therapy, anatomy with Tracy Campbell. While she’s not set on coaching, “I’ve been thinking about it,” she said. If that’s what she decides, said Rienks, “I think (this season) is going to make a huge difference.” While the reason she’s coaching — her knee injury — is sad, “She’s becoming better because of it and sees the game from a different aspect.” And while Mautz enjoys coaching, she wants to be there for her teammates, encourage and support them, and help make them better players. “That’s what really excites me, that I can make our team better, even though I’m not on the court.”

Instead, this circus features mind-bending stunts, comedy and live acts from performing artists like Dominic Del Signore and Rikki Morehouse. These two Paonia residents are the forces behind Homestead Circus Productions. While the circus has evolved over the years, Dominic says it still holds all the “feel good” qualities that have brought smiles to people’s faces for generations. One of the biggest changes is the venue. Theaters have taken the place of the big top, but there’s a big difference between a theater performance and the circus. Dominic Del Signore glides gracefully across the stage of “The Bob” Theater in Telluride in his Cyr wheel. create a variety show. Each act is entertaining on its own, but all are tied together by a script and a skillful master of ceremonies. The modern circus typically involves a great deal of traveling. “You travel to perform, to train, to network ... it becomes part of what you do,” Dominic says. While Dominic and Rikki say they draw a lot of inspiration from Cirque de Soleil, they try to give their shows more of a “homey” feel, where the audience has a greater connection to the individual performers. For a recent show in Telluride, they drew talented performing artists from across the U.S. Eventually, they hope to create a training site in Paonia that they can use to hone their own skills and offer classes in the movement arts, like gymnastics and dance, for children and adults. Currently, Dominic trains on his Cyr wheel on the racquetball courts at Bill Heddles Recreation Center, while Rikki has found a more spacious area to hang her aerial hoop. Wikipedia describes a Cyr wheel as an acrobatic apparatus that consists of a single large ring made of aluminum or steel with a diameter approximately 10 to 15 cm taller than the performer. The performer stands inside the Cyr wheel and grasps its rim, causing it to roll and spin gyroscopically while performing acrobatic moves in and around the rotating wheel. The wheel takes its name from Daniel Cyr, who reinvented it as a circus apparatus at the end of the 20th century. The aerial hoop, or lyra, is similar in design, but is suspended in mid-air. do some amazing handstands. A graphic designer by trade, she left her job in California to put more of herself into the circus. “I’ve been a touring performer ever since,” she says. “I settled in Paonia a year ago and it’s been frugal going while we build up Homestead Circus.” In addition to performing on the Cyr wheel, Dominic is a juggler of clubs, balls, rings, knives and just about anything else you can think of, and he dabbles in other acts. After seeing a Cyr wheel on a YouTube video, he knew he had to try it. “I had never seen or touched a Cyr wheel in person, but I bought one and sought out instruction. I’ve traveled to Montreal, California and Las Vegas to learn from other people, plus I’ve done a lot of self-study,” he says. “Because it’s a newer discipline, you soon get acquainted with other artists. We’re like kids on the playground, so excited to play with each other. It’s a very welcoming community, a very supportive community, but you also have to be extremely self-driven to make it happen. Just learning the basics takes time and dedication,” he says. Strength and balance are critical. While the Cyr wheel can be dangerous without proper training, Dominic says it’s really much more approachable than it appears. In May, Dominic and Rikki are offering a Cyr wheel training event in Boulder they’re billing under the name “Cyrs and Beers.” They chose Boulder because it’s convenient to a major airport, facilities are of the highest caliber, and they expect the mountains of Colorado to be a huge draw. Beginning, intermediate and advanced training will be offered by Dominic and three other coaches. “When you start doing circus you basically start traveling, so we do expect people to come from all over to be part of this class,” he said. Rikki will lead a stretch class designed to increase flexibility and range of motion. She’s found stretching vital to her contortionist act. Contortion is not just for people who are naturally “bendy,” Dominic says. That’s helpful, but athletic training and conditioning are key. “When you see people pushing their bodies to the limit, it’s kind of like magic, but circus isn’t just tricks,” he says. “It’s very, very much a lifestyle of taking care of your body, with hours and hours of training not related to your discipline. “There’s also a lot of mental stress and crippling selfdoubt when you’re trying to make your body do something it’s not accustomed to. Body care and prehab go hand in hand with doing things properly.” As a child, Rikki took gymnastics for a couple of years before dropping out in fifth grade. She didn’t get back into physical pursuits until she signed up for a yoga class at the age of 21. Dominic says he didn’t start juggling until he was in his 40s. “We are both proof you

There are certain feats you won’t be able to accomplish without a lot of time and training, like contortion, but anyone can try juggling, acting and clowning.” Dominic and Rikki hope to give residents of the Western Slope a chance to experience

the circus — and perhaps learn a few tricks themselves — through classes, training sessions and monthly get-togethers this summer. Makeup, costuming and props could draw in the other members of Paonia’s artistic community. “The circus can be a really inclusive thing,” Dominic says.
