ost of us remember from our Associate Member experience that at the 1929 Estes Park Convention, Delta Chi became the first fraternity to abolish “hell week.”

In nearly a century since, Delta Chi has continued to be a leader in reducing barriers to membership.

Strongly anchored in both our history as a law fraternity and our core value of justice, Delta Chi has a zero tolerance policy for discrimination of any kind, including race, color, creed, religion, national origin, age, marital status, disability, citizenship, and sexual orientation. The Delta Chi Fraternity strongly condemns all forms of hatred, racism, bigotry, and violence. Early last year, our fraternity started a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) Committee comprised largely of undergraduate and alumni members of the Fraternity. I am excited to see the recommendations of this committee in the months ahead.

Our core values are not conditional. Our Basic Expectations are not conditional.

Our calls for unity and justice shall not be conditional.

When I think back to joining Delta Chi nearly 30 years ago, I joined a chapter that was living our shared values and improving the quality of life for our members, our campus, and the community. We were leaders on campus and we participated in community service and philanthropy efforts. We helped our campus move beyond outdated activities which had been continued in the name of tradition. We taught young men character-based leadership skills and critical decision-making which are now being utilized by many of our alumni as they lead in their communities, volunteer organizations, businesses, and families.

Imagining 30 years from now, there are a few things I am certain about. The pace of technological change and the speed of society will continue to increase at a greater

rate. While innovation often improves the surface-level quality of life, we must be careful that this technology does not further isolate individuals from one another.

Fundamentally, most humans are social creatures. We need in-person connections - to be cared for and engaged. At the same time, we want to engage and care for others. We need to invest in others while others invest in us. This outlook ensures the continued need for our fraternity’s existence.

It will be as important 30 years from now as it is today. Even in 2040, when we celebrate our fraternity’s 150th anniversary, I trust we will still have the same excitement and energy when new members join.

Most importantly, as I look into the future, I think our advice and support today through personal and professional mentoring will aid our undergraduate members as they transition to future leaders in their communities and homes. The core values of Delta Chi will continue to transcend time.

They are as valuable and timeless today as they were in 1890 and will be in 2040.

With a COVID-19 vaccine being distributed, now is the time to share the benefits of being part of a fraternity. Below are a few research-based statistics that illustrate some of the advantages of the fraternal experience.

• Fraternity/sorority members show a greater overall level of involvement and engagement on campus, in all student organizations, and in the classroom.

They report stronger learning gains and satisfaction with the college experience.

This contributes to fraternity/sorority members graduating at a higher rate than their non-affiliated peers.

• With more than 80% of college students dealing with anxiety and more than 60% also feeling socially isolated, lonely, and depressed, fraternity/sorority members report higher positive mental health scores and lower levels of depression and anxiety.

• Fraternity/sorority members report 10% higher levels of engagement in the workplace compared to the national average, a large driver of the quality of life an individual experiences.

As you can see, when fraternity is done right, we are a powerful force for change in the lives of our members.

An Update from Delta Chi In late February, Adam Oakes, a Virginia Commonwealth University student and potential new member, died at an off-campus residence. No family should ever have to go through what Adam Oakes’ family is going through. Our thoughts and prayers remain with all of Adam’s family and friends.

Delta Chi suspended the chapter at VCU soon after learning of Adam’s passing.

The investigation is ongoing and law enforcement is working hard to determine the facts that led to Adam’s death. The Fraternity is cooperating with local law enforcement and pledging to assist in any way possible.

We remain committed to our core values of friendship, character, justice, and education. We encourage all chapters to unite and continue to set the example of these values in your local fraternity and sorority community.

F

or the last 118 years, the Delta Chi Quarterly has been a mainstay for the Fraternity and a convoy for historical events and notable accomplishments by our members.

Published in the inaugural edition in 1903, James Magenis, Cornell 1899, penned a letter to the editor that proclaimed, “Nothing will so bind the boys together, nothing will so enlighten them as to matters important to our well-being, nothing will so awaken an interest, as some form of periodical.”

While the manner in which information is relayed, distributed, and absorbed have all significantly changed since the start of the 20th century, the importance of the official Fraternity publication remains. And since its inception, the Quarterly continues to be delivered thanks to the many names and faces that have brought to life its content. For the better part of the past two decades, Drew Dallet, Kent State ’93, has not only been the visual architect operating behind the scenes, but a transformative pioneer in how the Quarterly’s aesthetic has evolved with the times.

Brother Dallet is the owner of Boom Creative (boom-creative.com), a full-service graphic design and marketing firm based in Twinsburg, Ohio. Through a lifetime of cultivating and developing his passion, Dallet’s journey to eventually designing the Quarterly was achieved through a commitment to his craft, the relationships developed in Delta Chi, and creating opportunities for himself.

“Design is my passion,” Dallet said. “When I look back to when I was little, it’s no surprise I ended up doing what I do. My love for drawing, TV commercials, magazine ads, etc. … to this day, I can’t drive anywhere without looking and mentally evaluating the signage (and design) around me.”

Dallet grew up in the suburbs of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A quiet kid and the younger of two children, Dallet recalls two passions that continue as mainstays in his life – skiing and art. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Visual Communication and Design from Kent State University in Ohio, an academic pairing seemingly made for him.

“My brother was an incoming freshman at Miami University when I was a junior in high school. He and my father met another father and son while waiting in line to register for classes … It turned out the gentleman, Ted, was an art director for an advertisement agency in Cleveland and invited us to come visit so that we could see first-hand what the design profession was all about.”

In 1987, Dallet and his father made the trek to The Forest City, visiting the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the aforementioned

agencies. Through conversations held during the visit, a recurring message was that Kent State delivered a top-tier design program.

This prompted an additional trip to visit the campus, landing the duo at 400 Janik Drive, the Art Building for Kent State.

Dallet met many of the school’s professors, saw student portfolios, and learned about the program’s curriculum. As his father declared at the end of their trip, “If I’m paying for your college, this is where you’re going.”

Knowing a bit about Greek life prior to his arrival on campus, Dallet’s older brother was a member of Kappa Sigma at Miami and his father was an Alpha Epsilon Pi at Toledo. This created the curiosity about joining a fraternity, but one he had to fulfill through his own experiences.

“I knew early on I was interested in joining a fraternity. My brother had invited me a few times to visit him at Miami, so I knew what Greek life could be like … I didn’t want to be part of a ‘typical’ fraternity. A friend in my freshman dorm was being tutored by a Kent State Colony Delta Chi member and he invited me to go bowling with the guys.”

Having started in 1987, the Kent State Colony was one of the newest additions to the Greek community. Consisting of just 14 men, the intimate connections and conduct of the men were more appealing to Dallet than that of other potential organizations.

“For me, Delta Chi was everything, outside of my graphic design program. I joined in the fall of 1988 and was initiated in the Beta class in January 1989. We were so small that I was part of the first initiation class.”

Dallet was initiated into the Brotherhood of a Lifetime alongside Steve Bossart, Kent State ’90, a Past “AA” of Delta Chi. Dallet rarely misses the opportunity to remind the accomplished Bossart that he has been “initiated” in the Fraternity longer.

“One of my favorite moments from initiation was the fact that I was actually initiated before (him).

Of the nine (initiated), he was the last to experience the Ritual that night. To this day, I never let him live that down”.

Dissimilar to the average collegiate experience, Dallet began his educational path with a clear understanding of his future goals and career ambitions.

“Most students don’t have a 100%-clear path as to where they might go, but I hit the ground running from day one. I spent the best five years of my life at Kent (State) and Delta Chi was the driving force.”

In 1996, after brief stops in Aspen, Colorado and a return to Milwaukee, Dallet returned to Ohio to live with two of his Delta Chi brothers. He was recruited to work at an ad agency in Canton, congruent with the time when the internet became a largely utilized tool and a viable business solution.

“The three of us were part of a start-up web development firm… we grew the business during the .com boom of the late 1990’s and in 2000, I moved on to a new opportunity with a graphic design firm in Cleveland.”

Maintaining the relationships created in Delta Chi, it wasn’t until the mid-2000’s that Dallet sought the opportunity to take the reigns of the Quarterly. Ray Galbreth, Missouri ’69, had been designing the Quarterly through the turn of the century while serving as Executive Director of the Fraternity.

“I approached Ray to ask him if he would be open to me taking the magazine off his plate and really giving it a more creative and unique touch. He was open to it and the spring/summer 2005 issue was my first, and I’ve designed all of them since.”

After 16 years, Dallet remains passionate about the Quarterly while continuing to evolve the Fraternity’s official publication.

“I love this project so much … The look and feel has changed over the years, but I’m always trying to ensure the magazine is ‘familiar’ to all, yet still creative.”

Boom Creative, Dallet’s firm, provides corporatefocused branding and marketing as well as website development. It’s provided the Kent State alumnus with the opportunity to work from home for the past 20 years. As such, he’s able to spend plenty of time with his family and stay connected to the most important things in life.

“I met my wife Blythe in 2003 and were married in 2004. In 2006, my son Quinn was born and in 2009, my daughter Piper entered our lives. They are my motivation in life. Everything I do is for them.”

While Dallet serves as his own boss, he is responsible for generating his own business and delivering quality products for clients. With a strong portfolio and a proven track record, Dallet doesn’t have to look any further than his passion for art that allows him to consistently deliver on his promises. He encourages others, in pursuing career opportunities, to operate with clarity.

“My advice (to others) is to ‘know your path.’

It seems silly, but if you know what you want to do from an early age and dedicate yourself to reaching that goal, you’ll achieve it … I tell young designers all the time, there is a place for (them) in this world.

Some are meant to work at the most creative agencies in the country, while others will work in the creative department at FedEx Office. If you are dedicated, passionate, motivated, and driven, you will achieve your goals.”

As is true with virtually every person throughout the globe, the COVID-19 pandemic has created a litany of obstacles and challenges for the self-employed designer.

But he’s found a way to persevere during the tumultuous times with a simple approach.

“Design is my passion.

When I look back to when I was little, it’s no surprise I ended up doing what I do.”

“This past year at home, COVID has really taught us the important things in life; being happy, staying healthy, and looking forward to a brighter future.”

Delta Chi’s Risk Management Update is published annually in the Spring edition of the Quarterly.

Risk Management Policy

The Risk Management Policy of The Delta Chi Fraternity includes the provisions that follow and all members are expected to comply. Compliance to the following will likely result in a safer fraternity experience. If any chapter, colony, or member chooses not to comply with these policies, the Fraternity may impose sanctions per Delta Chi Law, the By-Laws, Article V, Section 4, 2(h).

Alcohol and Drugs 1. The presence, consumption and use of any alcohol product containing more than 15% alcohol by volume (ABV) is prohibited at any chapter facility or chapter event, except when served by a licensed and insured third party vendor. The presence, possession or consumption of an alcohol product below 15% ABV at a chapter facility or chapter event shall be in compliance with all of the provisions of this Policy and all applicable laws of the state, province, county, city and institution of higher learning.

2. No alcoholic beverages shall be purchased through or with chapter funds nor shall the purchase of same for members or guests be undertaken or coordinated by any member in the name of or on behalf of the chapter. The purchase or use of a bulk quantity or common source(s) of alcoholic beverage, for example, kegs or cases, is prohibited.

3. EVENTS, meaning those with unrestricted access by non-members of the fraternity, without specific invitation, where alcohol is present, are prohibited. Any event with alcohol present that can or will be associated with the fraternity requires a guest list prepared 24 (twentyfour) hours in advance of the event and submitted to the Chapter “F” and Social Chairman, and must comply with either the Bring Your Own Beverage (BYOB) or Third Party Vendor Guidelines as set forth in the Social Event Planning Guide.

4. No members, collectively or individually, shall purchase for, serve to, or sell alcoholic beverages to any minor (i.e., those under legal drinking age).

5. The possession, sale or use of any ILLEGAL DRUGS or CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES while on chapter premises or during a fraternity event or at any event that an observer would associate with the fraternity is prohibited.

6. No chapter shall co-sponsor an event with an alcohol distributor or any commercial establishment with alcohol, at which alcohol is given away, sold or otherwise provided to those present. This includes any event held in, at or on the property of a tavern as defined above for purposes of fundraising. However, a chapter may rent or use a room or area in a tavern as defined above for a closed event held within the provisions of this policy, including the use of a third-party vendor and guest list. An event at which alcohol is present could be conducted or co-sponsored with a charitable organization if the event is held within the provisions of the organization and college or university policy.

7. No chapter shall co-sponsor, co-finance or attend or participate in a function at which alcohol is purchased by any of the host chapters, groups or organizations.

8. Alcohol or any illegal substance shall be prohibited during any recruitment or rush activities. No recruitment or rush activities associated shall be held at or in conjunction with a tavern or alcohol distributor as defined in this policy.

9. No chapter, colony, member or associate member shall permit, tolerate, encourage or participate in “drinking games.” The definition of drinking games includes but is not limited to the consumption of shots of alcohol, liquor or alcoholic beverages, the practice of consuming shots equating to one’s age, “beer pong,” “century club,” “dares” or any other activity involving the consumption of alcohol which involves duress or encouragement related to the consumption of alcohol.

10. No alcohol may be present at any associate member activity, event or; before, during or after the ritual of the fraternity. This includes but is not limited to activities associated with “bid night,” “big brother – little brother” events or activities, “family” events or activities, traditions, ceremonies and initiation

Hazing No chapter, colony, member, associate member or alumnus shall conduct, participate in nor condone hazing activities. Permission or approval by a person being hazed is not a defense.

Hazing activities are defined as: “ Any action taken or situation created, intentionally, whether on or off fraternity premises, to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule. Such activities may include but are not limited to the following: use of alcohol, paddling in any form, creation of excessive fatigue, physical and psychological shocks, quests, treasure hunts, scavenger hunts, road trips or any other such activities carried on outside or inside of the confines of the chapter house; wearing of public apparel which is conspicuous and not normally in good taste, engaging in public stunts and buffoonery, morally degrading or humiliating games and activities, and any other activities which are not consistent with academic achievement, fraternal law, ritual or policy or the regulations and policies of the educational institution or applicable state law.”

Sexual Abuse And Harassment 1. The Delta Chi Fraternity does not tolerate or condone sexual harassment, stalking, domestic violence, dating violence, or sexual assault, or sexual violence as defined by Delta Chi Law. This is to include any actions, activities or events, whether on chapter premises or an off-site location which are demeaning to women or men, including but not limited to verbal harassment, sexual assault by individuals or members acting together.

2. The employment or use of strippers, exotic dancers or similar, whether professional or amateur, at a fraternity event as defined in this policy shall not be allowed.

Notification Chapters and colonies are expected to notify the International Headquarters within twenty-four (24) hours of becoming aware of the following: 1. Any injury to a member or guest that occurred as a result of a fraternity-related activity or an event a reasonable observer could associate with the Fraternity.

2. Allegations of sexual assault, abuse, harassment or misconduct connected with a member or guest 3. Any inquiries by authorities or legal counsel regarding an incident related to the chapter/colony.

Fire, Health And Safety 1. All chapter facilities shall meet all local fire and health codes and standards.

We must recognize the importance of the safety of our brothers and guests, risk management, and prevention. We must continue to set our expectations in alignment with the Risk Management Policies of Delta Chi and hold ourselves and individuals accountable to their actions. Accountability begins with shared expectations, which are found in the Risk Management Policies, the Basic Expectations of Delta Chi, and our Ritual. Our dedication to providing a safe and formative experience in Delta Chi must continue.

2. All chapters shall post, within common areas, emergency numbers for fire, police and ambulance and will have posted evacuation routes on the back of the door of each sleeping room.

4. FIREARMS AND EXPLOSIVES. No firearms or ammunition, including air-powered weapons, or explosive or incendiary devices, including fireworks, shall be possessed, stored, or used in any chapter facility or at any chapter sponsored event, except as authorized by law enforcement officers.

5. Candles will not be used in chapter facilities or individual rooms except under controlled circumstances such as initiations.

6. No swimming pools, hot tubs, slip and slides or other similar water related activities shall be installed or used at any chapter facility or chapter sponsored event, except that a swimming pool or hot tub that exists at a chapter facility prior to August 1, 2018 may continue to be used.

Gambling Gambling or games of chance in any form whatsoever shall not be permitted in any chapter facility or at any chapter event except as permitted by all applicable laws of the state, province, county, city and institution of higher education.

Education Each chapter and colony shall annually instruct its students and alumni/ alumnae in its risk management policies and practices both of the Fraternity and higher education institution. The undergraduates and key volunteers will receive on an annual basis a copy of the organization risk management policy and that a copy of the policy be posted on the organization website.

Started in 2007, HazingPrevention.org is a national organization dedicated to empowering people to prevent hazing by providing education and resources, advocating hazing prevention, and building partnerships with others.

1. I NDIVIDUAL. If a member assists another person in obtaining immediate and appropriate medical care related to the use or consumption of alcohol, drugs, or to another medical emergency, then that member, as well as those who are assisted, will not be subject to individual disciplinary action by the Fraternity with respect to the incident. This is the case even if the member who is assisting was a contributing factor to the emergency, so long as the member did not intentionally cause any physical injury. To be eligible for the benefit of this policy the member must fully and truthfully cooperate with any Fraternity investigation regarding the incident. An individual may benefit from this policy more than once, though repeated use of the policy may recieve stricter scrutiny.

By the Numbers fter reaching the one-year mark in dealing with the impact of COVID-19, it has become increasingly important to be proactive in assessing our mental and physical health.

While people around the globe have seen their day-to-day lives drastically altered by the pandemic, it is likely that even more people are struggling with their mental health than statistics suggest. According to the National Alliance of Mental Illness, nearly 21% of all adults in these United States are dealing with some kind of mental illness. This means, one out of five people could be dealing with anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, borderline personality disorder, or schizophrenia. The average delay between symptom onset and treatment is 11 years, and less than half of adults with a mental illness get treatment.

If you or any of your Delta Chi brothers are dealing with a mental health issue, we encourage you to seek help today. The Campus Assistance Program (CAP) is a private and free service providing professional support and referral services designed to help you with personal, school, or family related problems. The CAP can support you during a crisis and help you identify and gain control over personal problems that may be interfering with school and daily life.

1. KNOW THAT STRESS CAN BE YOUR FRIEND

This eight-step outline provides critical insight and considerations for dealing with the uncertainty of the ongoing pandemic and can benefit your physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.

It’s your perception of stress, not stress itself, that really matters. Studies have shown that when you perceive stress as positive and helpful, it helps you to perform at your peak and thrive in difficult situations.

2. OSCILLATE

Your body is designed to deal with stress, just not indefinitely. It manages itself by down-regulating perceived non-essential functions, such as digestive and immune systems. To properly cope in pressure situations, “oscillate,” or switch between a highperformance state and a recovery state. Step away when necessary!

3. BREATHE INTENTIONALLY

When you’re feeling worried or anxious and you choose to focus on what you’re grateful for, it instantly shifts your thoughts, and, as a result, your emotions.

6. BE PRESENT AND MINDFUL

Get out of your head! Avoid being stuck in the past or the future – focus on the present. Fears are only future possible realities, so come back to the present to overcome them.

Breathing is the one part of your autonomic nervous system that you can influence, allowing you to switch from your sympathetic nervous system (SSN) and into your parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) – a place to remain calm, perform, and make good decisions. Look up breathing techniques to improve your physical and mental health while improving immune function.

4. BUILD A RESILIENT MINDSET

5. ADOPT AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE

Understand common thinking traps and avoid them. Focus on what you can control, monitor what you feed your thoughts, ask yourself ‘is this helpful or harmful?’, and avoid catastrophizing by refraining from jumping from one worst possible outcome to the next.

7. LAUGHTER

Make a point of smiling at people as much as you can. It’s fantastic for your body’s physiology. Even if the smiling is mediated through technology (i.e. emojis), we have mirror neurons that make us want to smile back.

8. SHIFT YOUR POSTURE TO SHIFT YOUR MOOD How you hold your body changes how you think and feel. Adopt expansive postures or “power posing” to shift your physiology and release hormones that help you feel happy, calm, and confident.

A letter from the Director of Member Safety Our Basic Expectation #3 tasks Delta Chi’s to protect the health and safety of all human beings.

When discussing health and safety, it is easy to focus solely on the physical health of our brothers. Equally important is our mental health. Whether it is stress, grief, loss, financial worry, navigating relationships, or other real-life situations, it is important to understand feeling conflicted or worrisome is normal.

In the fraternal world, with a depicted culture on social media perpetuating hypermasculinity and binge drinking, mental health can be challenging to address.

The stigma associated with mental health creates barriers for important conversations.

It is fairly common for men, especially young men in college, to demonstrate a dismissal of personal struggles and instead, use unhealthy coping mechanisms instead of

seeking the necessary help or assistance they need.

Mental health continues to be an issue for men and as Delta Chi’s, we have a duty to uphold our Basic Expectations, listen to one another, and assist each other. Delta Chi has extensive resources available to all members of the Fraternity through the Campus Assistance Program (CAP). Individuals can talk to a licensed crisis counselor at any time and get assistance locating further resources. In addition to the CAP, nearly every University has a student health center or counseling services available to students, usually at little to no cost. The resources to seek help exist, but it is up to us to continue to make others aware of them and encourage their use when needed.

As members of Delta Chi, we can cultivate a culture of addressing mental health in our own chapters and colonies. We can: 1. Check in on Brothers throughout the week - a simple text or phone call to see how they’re doing.

2. Highlight a different resource related to mental health at each chapter or colony meeting.

3. Be supportive of one another, especially if we know someone is struggling or seeking help.

4. Ask our Fraternity and Sorority Life Office if there is anyone on campus that could speak at a chapter or colony meeting about mental health.

I encourage all of Delta Chi members to learn more about the resources available to them and to do their part in destigmatizing mental health in today’s fraternal world.

June Bug

From the Men of the Southern Illinois Chapter

D

elta Chi is a values-driven organization, promoting four core values that serve as the foundation for doing fraternity right. The first of these values, promoting friendship, is perhaps the most recognizable in the Delta Chi experience, as the common bond of personal development brings together quality men that work together to accomplish great things. Sometimes the most meaningful relationships developed are not exclusive to the bonds created between undergraduate men however, as the deepest and most meaningful friendships can manifest in many ways throughout each person’s Delta Chi journey.

During the mid-1980’s, one of the most impactful and important relationships for the men of the Southern Illinois Chapter came in the form of June Freeman, a cook for the Southern Illinois chapter house. Freeman, who worked at 105 Greek Row for seven years, recently learned the value of her presence and the impact she had on hundreds of young men.

A native of Illinois, Freeman was born in 1934 to a family of six children and was the only daughter to her parents, Albert and Nora. A fascinating story of perseverance, Freeman overcame tuberculosis that derailed her final year of high school and would go on to work as a beautician, running a salon out of her home. She also baked wedding cakes prior to her hiring at Delta Chi in 1985.

“I lived in the house from 1984 to 1986 and served as the kitchen manager when we hired June in 1985,” William Nevin, Southern Illinois ’86, said. “I got to know her quite well as we had to order food, prepare menus, oversee staffing, and worked right alongside each other for a year.”

Freeman was forced to leave the job in 1992 after suffering a stroke, but the years spent at Delta Chi were not without importance. Recently hospitalized for dementia, Freeman thought she was back living in the days of her time spent at Delta Chi, prompting her granddaughter Jennifer Glodo to do something about it.

Glodo, a healthcare worker, reached out to alumni members of the Southern Illinois Chapter, informing the men of Freeman’s current condition and her reliving of the times at Delta Chi in her mind. Glodo hoped initially that the members would be willing to write notes to “June Bug,” as she lovingly came to be known, to lift up her spirits at a time when visitation at her long-term care facility is extremely limited.

The response Glodo received was far beyond her expectations.

The members of the Southern Illinois Chapter came together to create a holiday video for Freeman, as 37 videos, greetings, and personal stories were pieced together to create a half-hour long message for the former cook. The stories told cover her years at Delta Chi and the immense importance and impact she had during that time.

“What I remember most about June was her motherly instincts,” Nevin continued. “Not only was she an excellent cook who poured lots of love into our meals, but she really was a ‘house mom’ during her time with us.”

reconnect with June and thank her personally,” David Algrim, Southern Illinois ’92 added. “I think I speak for everyone involved when I say seeing the greetings to June brought me back to 105 Greek Row and reminded me what a special place that was and how fortunate we were to have ‘June Bug’ in our life.”

Kevin Tinsley ’88, a then-junior transfer to Southern Illinois, was one of many to share a heartwarming story of the generosity bestowed upon the members by Freeman.

“I have many fond memories of hanging out with (Freeman) in the morning before class. (One) of the fond memories that I have is of Brother Dave Kathe (Southern Illinois ’89) coming down right before breakfast was over … Dave would stroll in sleepy-eyed, hair tousled, and say ‘Hey June Bug, what’s for breakfast?’ and (she) always had a good breakfast saved on the side for Dave and his late arrival. (She) always had a special place in (her) heart for Dave … and (she) was always there for all of us.”

“When we get together over the years and reminisce, (Freeman) always come up (in conversations),” Mike Slevin, Southern Illinois ’90, added. “We were just so thankful to have (her) back then.”

“I think some of the other guys have said it but I’ll reiterate it - (Freeman) was a calming influence.” Blake Centers, Southern Illinois ’90 said. “(She) was a mother when all of us were away from our mothers … it was such a big part of my life.”

While it is likely that Freeman was never privy to the breadth and depth of the impact she had on the men living in the chapter house at the time, the hope is that the video has created some semblance of the immeasurable debt of gratitude the members have for her, even years later.

“To a very special lady, we say thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” Nevin finished.
