Pub plan encounters rough Proposal to shift liquor licence to golf clubhouse has supporters, opponents SANDOR GYARMATI

A proposal to shift a liquor licence to a nearby golf clubhouse has caused a stir in a Ladner neighbourhood. The Links at Hampton Cove (formerly Cove Links) on Admiral Boulevard wants to transfer the primary liquor licence from the now-closed Rusty Anchor Pub on Ferry Road to its clubhouse lounge. The transfer request will

require Delta council’s blessing before it can be sent to the province’s Liquor Control and Licensing Branch where approval is also required. A licence transfer wouldn’t require a public hearing by Delta. Despite the applicant receiving several letters of support as well as a petition in favour, letters have also poured in expressing opposition. Several residents say the pub was far enough away from houses that noise was not a

bother, whereas the clubhouse is located in a residential area and shares a fence with many homes. With a pub comes noise, including people coming and going and smoking in the parking lot, they complained. Another complained the area already has a parking problem. “As lifelong Ladner residents, concerned parents and voting members of this community, we implore you to deny this application and keep our neighbourhood a quiet, enjoyable place to

live,” wrote one nearby homeowner. The Neilson Grove Elementary PAC also expressed opposition, noting the school’s proximity to the golf course. The applicant has reduced the requested hours of operation to 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. Council was told a new development is planned for the pub site, one that may or may not include a future liquor licence application.

Optimist readers have chosen their favourites! The ballots have been counted and now it’s time to reveal the winners of our 2017 Readers’ Choice Awards. First step for future cops Delta Police Department swears in a new class of reserve constables IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

The Delta Police Department has a dozen fresh faces that will soon be out in the community making a difference. At a ceremony earlier this month at Delta Municipal Hall, 12 reserve constables were sworn-in, bringing the complement of reserves to around 40. DPD reserve constables are volunteers who participate in community policing and crime prevention activities while under the supervision of a police officer. A reserve constable must commit to volunteer a minimum of 16 hours each month, which includes training, ridealongs with patrol members and participation in community events and programs. “This is a volunteer program for people who are civic-minded or want to improve their application to become a full-fledged officer,” said Const. Danny Simone, who along with Sgt. Kim Campbell and Const. Dennis Mah oversee the program. “The reserve constables will go through about half of the steps that a recruit will go through when they are trying to become a regular member of the department.” Training consists of a minimum of 90 hours of classroom instruction and practical work during a period of four months. There are also three, eight-

The Justice Institute of British Columbia administers mid-term and final examinations. All of the training is conducted by Delta police officers. Campbell said the reserve program has been a part of the department for more than 40 years. “It originally started with people who were civic-minded, but didn’t necessarily want to become police officers, but wanted to be involved with the community and support the police and get a better understanding what the day in the life was like,” said Campbell. “What we are seeing now is probably 95 per cent of the people that come into the program are gearing their life towards

a career in policing. They have either made an application with a policing agency in the Lower Mainland or the RCMP and have found they are not a competitive applicant due to education, work experience, volunteer experience or they are really trying to get a taste of policing to make sure the decision and the commitment they are going to make is the right one.” Campbell said over the years just under 60 per cent of the reserves have been hired by Delta or other police agencies. She considers the reserve constables an integral part of the department. “We call them our farm team. If gives us an opportunity to check them out to see if they can do the job,

are they a good team fit and be a part of our team and also a chance for them to check out the inner workings of our organization to see if they want to work for us, so it’s just a great relationship that we have with these men and women,” she said. Mah knows first-hand what impacts the program can have on a career as he was a reserve constable for eight years before he was hired. “I did my training when I was 19-years-old with the Nelson City Police Department and on top of getting training with dispatch it was a seamless fit to jump into the Delta Police Department,” Mah recalled. This year’s class consists of varying backgrounds. One constable works for

BC Ferries, others volunteer with youth groups and charities, another is in the military reserve, while another plays with the B.C. Lions. Kyle Cardinal grew up in North Delta and has always had a passion to volunteer and give back to his community. “I have a number of friends who have also gone through the reserve program and it was a highly sought after, reputable program, not just in Delta, but amongst other departments as well,” said Cardinal. “It’s a good chance to get your foot in the door, hands-on experience and get a taste for the job.” Terra Schmuland wants to one day become a fulltime officer, but had a few doubts and questions, so that’s why she chose the reserve program. “I’m so glad I did. This has been such an amazing experience,” she said. “The teachers have so much knowledge and the program itself is so put together. They take the time and the effort to make the program as good as it is. “This is a great step in the right direction to achieving my goal of becoming a police officer.” The new reserves also include: Christopher Bond, Niall Cousens, Jaskaran Dhillon, David Feng, Neil Francisco, Abubaker Ghafoori, Mehran Khanjian, Matthew Larke, Justin Wong and Brian Yi.

The provincial Liberal government remains steadfast in its commitment to build a bridge to replace the aging George Massey Tunnel, says Delta South MLA Ian Paton. Saying the bridge remains the best, most viable option, the rookie Liberal MLA clarified a statement in last week’s Throne Speech that said the Liberals are reconsidering the design of the bridge and “recognizing concerns” about it. Paton said in no way does that mean the Liberals are looking at crossing alternatives, something that has already been examined, but rather addressing concerns conveyed by the City of Richmond over the associated road network. “The premier, I believe, recently had a meeting with Malcolm Brodie, the mayor of Richmond. Apparently they are a bit concerned with the design on the Richmond side of the bridge, the interchange

immersed tunnel is a better solution, saying it’s far better than a cable bridge in soil conditions such as the George Massey Tunnel location. Paton said that argument is ridiculous and that he’s talked with engineers who know plenty about building bridges, saying safe bridges are built with friction piling all over the world. “I can talk all day about some of the ridiculous ideas like submerging another tunnel… I’ve always contended that slapping a brand new concrete tunnel somehow next to an old beat-up tunnel that was built in 1958 doesn’t make any sense whatsoever,” he said. “Also in 1958, there’s very little traffic on the Fraser River, now there’s tonnes of marine traffic. So how are you going to spend two years with barges out there trying to place a tunnel to the bottom of the river, which environmentally would be a nightmare for sturgeon and salmon and aquatic life.”

A new water fountain and lap counter were officially unveiled last week at Fred Gingell Park in Tsawwassen. The features were installed through a partnership between the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen and the Corporation of Delta, said municipal director of parks, recreation and culture Ken Kuntz. He noted the park, which includes stairs accessing the beach, has turned “into a real exercise venue.” He estimated somewhere between 150 and 500 people use the stairs daily. Rotary Club of Tsawwassen president Benno Bucher noted the water fountain was club member Ian Bourhill’s idea.

Director of parks, recreation and culture Ken Kuntz and Mayor Lois Jackson check out the new fountain at Fred Gingell Park last Tuesday. Bourhill said he got the idea from a competition that was done in London. “It’s actually a piece of art,” he said of the new fountain. It features four taps in total with one each for adults, children and pets and one to fill up water bottles. Mayor Lois Jackson thanked Rotarians for the

“wonderful addition to this wonderful park.” Bucher noted the lap counter has turned into a bit of a gathering place at the park. It features loops with coloured washers that allow users to track the number of times they go up and down the stairs as well as storage space for personal belongings.

Murphy’s Law

think it’s important to remember that it’s serving people, not the allure of power, that drives our political leaders. It might be easy to lose sight of that premise given what has taken place in Victoria in recent days, but rest assured the leaders of the three main political parties in B.C. are thinking about you, not themselves, as they conduct business in the capital. In last week’s Throne Speech, Christy Clark said her minority government has listened to the result of last month’s election and has put forward a legislative agenda that serves all British Columbians. One has to wonder how much listening the Liberals would have done had the Courtenay-Comox recount gone in their favour, but since it didn’t, we get everything from the elimination of tolls and unprecedented child care funding to promises of an electoral reform referendum and a royal commission on education. Remember, this was not a desperate move to hold onto power, but a genuine desire to embrace change. That subtle difference seemed lost on NDP Leader John Horgan, who dismissed the Throne Speech before it was even read in the legislature, despite it containing many policies ripped right from the New Democrats’ election handbook. Horgan has repeatedly talked about parties cooperating for the good of British Columbians, yet when policies he champions were put forward by the Liberals he balked, presumably because it will somehow be different if a NDP-Green coalition bans big money from elections rather than a Liberal government doing the same thing. Green Leader Andrew Weaver was more generous in his comments, saying he was heartened to see the Liberals adopt so many Green policies and by their willingness to work across party lines, but – and you knew there had to be a but – he couldn’t trust Clark’s sudden about-face, so therefore he couldn’t support the Throne Speech. I can’t blame the two opposition leaders for their trepidation over Clark’s new-found desire to be all things to all people and I recognize they have every right to topple the government. Sixteen years of Liberal rule will come to an end this week (if it already hasn’t), ushering in a new group that will work for you. As long, of course, it also works for them.

Planes, trains and automobiles, the future looks crowded here

O

ne of my best friends lives in Ladner. She had foot surgery that kept her immobile for months, and that meant she was forced to spend a lot of time at home listening. Like Jimmy Stewart’s character in Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window, her senses where heightened and she became acutely perceptive to her surroundings. She may not have witnessed a murder but she started to hear an aberration, the constant roar coming from the sky. She began documenting plane traffic above her house and on a Saturday morning she recorded planes flying overhead at 9:30, 9:50, 10:00, 10:04, 10:11, 10:21, 10:24, 10:29, 10:31, 10:34, 10:36 and 10:38. That’s 12 planes in 68 minutes. Try enjoying a conversation with your husband over morning coffee, or hosting an outdoor barbecue, with air traffic like that. There’s a 20-year master plan for YVR in the works and it includes a huge increase in airplane traffic over South Delta. In 2016, YVR had 22 million passengers; in just 20 years that will rise to 35 million per year. Peak daily aircraft movements over Delta are due to rise by 438 per cent over the next 30 years.

Community Comment INGRID ABBOTT

That sounds like an onslaught from above. Call me a NIMBY, but those levels are unacceptable. The air is not the only place we are going to face increased environmental pollution. Ladner residents in proximity to the river already experience air pollution caused by the over one million cars that idle every year trying to merge into the George Massey Tunnel. The next onslaught will be construction noise and dust from the new bridge project. Presently 86,000 cars drive the tunnel daily, and that number will rise once the bridge is built and our population swells. Now that summer is here we like to enjoy a peaceful dinner on our deck, but it comes with the sound of trains rumbling down the tracks near our Beach

Grove neighbourhood. The train engines braking and accelerating can be heard in so many of our neighbourhoods and it’s only going to get worse. Train volumes are projected to double once Terminal 2 is built. By 2031 the Roberts Bank corridor will have 29 trains moving a day with public crossing times of 191 minutes a day. That’s a whole lot of increased whistle time. Noise pollution is not to be taken lightly as it contributes to high blood pressure, heart disease, hypertension and sleep problems, but most concerning is how it affects our psychological health. Solutions such as quieter jet engines, rerouting flight paths, implementing roadway noise barriers and designing noise reducing engines are essential. Our municipal leaders have the power to implement bylaws that protect us from noise pollution, and they must be aggressive. Like Hitchcock’s character Jeff Jeffries, take the time to watch and listen to your environment this summer. What you hear may affect you more than you realize. It could be a thriller in the making. Multiculturalism efforts have left Canada without a true identity

Editor: Immigration is a twoway road, to be travelled to the mutual benefit of both the newcomer and the host country. A nation that knows its own worth and preserves its own values makes citizenship mean more than just an easily obtained piece of paper after a residency of a mere three years. However, little progress will be made to “Canadianize” new immigrants unless we face up to what has always

been the elephant in the room: Canada’s legislated policy of “We-Are-TheWorld” multiculturalism, celebrating and perpetuating cultural differences. Instead of providing for newcomers an incentive for truly and unequivocally accepting Canada and its national customs, its cultural values and its laws, and leaving their own wars, hatreds and divisions behind, Canada’s officially imposed multiculturalism has in fact encour-

aged newcomers to remain outside the country’s mainstream, isolating themselves in their own ethnic and lingual cocoons and enclaves, instead of integrating into Canadian society. Indeed, it has become the aim of politically correct self-proclaimed so-called “progressive” middle class higher purpose white folks who think it is the very essence of enlightened liberalism to diminish their own cultural traditions and values

North Arm crossing also needed

Editor: Re: Plan B is needed, Murphy’s Law, June 23 Murphy’s Law restates the old argument that a new Massey bridge won’t increase congestion at the Oak Street Bridge because of a traffic survey that showed 60 per cent of northbound morning tunnel traffic stays in Richmond. If we can accept that the new bridge will encourage more development south of the Fraser, leading to more traffic, then presumably, on average, 40 per cent of that new traffic will also

use the Oak Street Bridge. Sounds like more congestion to me. Northbound and southbound commuters from south of the Fraser River face two (separate) bottlenecks each way: the Oak Street Bridge and the George Massey Tunnel. Some days we see both, and some days we do not. The logical conclusion is to relieve both bottlenecks. Columnist Greg Hoover offered some solutions aimed at the tunnel, but the only solution to the Oak Street Bridge issue is another crossing of the

North Arm, perhaps at Fraser Street or Boundary Road. The most sensible solution may be a new six-lane crossing at the tunnel site and a new four-lane bridge over the North Arm. This would require a hitherto unheard of level of communication and cooperation between the various politicians and agencies responsible for the Lower Mainland’s transportation. This may be the main challenge for our new provincial government. Adrian Wightman

Bus route cuts are a terrible mistake

Editor: As a student living in Ladner and commuting outside my community, I am upset to hear of some of the changes coming in regards to the Southwest Area Transit Plan. Although adding bus routes to North Delta and Langley are positive, the

reduction of certain bus routes, longer walks and waits times is a terrible mistake. The current options for transit to and from Delta are limited enough, and now cuts are being considered? This is appalling given the increased population and high density

housing in Delta and people trying to avoid traffic and reduce pollution by taking public transit. I would highly recommend that the effect this will have on the residents of Delta be thoroughly taken under advisement by TransLink. Rebecca Mulder

Clark had ample time to address issues Editor: Christy Clark had ample opportunity to demonstrate her determination to: 1) eliminate big donations from politics in exchange for her favourable decisions; 2) raise child welfare rates and

B.C.’s minimum wage; 3) protect B.C.’s coast from spills of petroleum products; and 4) pay teachers a fair wage and allow teachers to have class sizes that are practical in terms of strong learning outcomes for all students.

as offensive to others. So long as, after 150 years as a nation, we view ourselves, bereft of a culture of our own, as just a geopolitical repository for a motley multitude of co-existing cultures and values, our immigration motto and message to the rest of the world might as well be summed up as follows: “Come as you are. Stay as you are. And if you don’t like who we are, we will change for you!” E.W. Bopp

Disparity in funding for universities

Editor: Nowhere in Christy Clark’s Throne Speech was there a promise to eliminate the huge regional disparities in the services provided by the government. In particular, the speech ignored the fact our south of the Fraser River region gets less than half the adult and post-secondary learning opportunities that the rest of the province is given. Some of the government’s $2.2 billion surplus must go to Kwantlen Polytechnic University so it can begin to offer our region the access that people throughout the rest of B.C. have had for years — to adult basic education, to English language training, to trades training and to undergraduate programs. This needs to happen so that our neighbours — and their children — will no longer face the current inequitable barrier to improving their education and their ability to contribute to our economy. “Miss Blue” needs a loving home as soon as possible. Her current owner has health concerns and can no longer give Miss Blue a secure home and future. Miss Blue is approximately 12 years old but she says she is “going on 6!” (ie, it’s true, she doesn’t look or act her age and acts like a younger mature cat). Miss Blue is very affectionate and loves giving and receiving attention. She is an overachiever with lap sitting, guest greeting, and flopping on the floor to show off while curling up her little paws (as in the photo) to share her delight in keeping you company. We want Miss Blue to find a secure, loving home with a kind soul who would appreciate a fun loving, big personality, sweetly affectionate cat for company. She loves both men and women as to her lap sitting and being a good companion.

Water main work hasn’t hurt businesses Little impact on Tsawwassen Springs as Metro Vancouver continues 52nd Street construction SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Business hasn’t been impacted significantly. That’s how it’s looking, so far, for Tsawwassen merchants as construction continues on Metro Vancouver’s water main replacement project along 52nd Street. Crews moved south of

Highway 17 last month to continue water main work, complete with detours through Imperial Village, causing fears of traffic congestion and lost business. Things aren’t so bad for area businesses, at least that’s the case for Woods Coffee at Tsawwassen Springs. Manager Carly Kaiser said business dropped initially but then

Q. Shell I hope you can help. I know you can’t

have your cake and eat it too but our home is very hot now that the warm weather has arrived. Having air conditioning installed is out of the question but is there something else I can do to cool our living area down to gain some form of comfort?

Jo-Anne, North Delta

A. Yes I can offer an option that does not mean adding air cooling air conditioning. Close all your windows, window coverings and doors. NOW, does your home have a furnace with a switch that can turn on the summer fan? If “yes” TURN IT ON and leave it on. That is the first step, 2nd shut off the pilot light on the furnace burner and 3rd leave the front panel off the furnace. Now the blower is able to move the cooler air from the basement or crawl space up into the living area of your home via the ducting system. Note: this will not work as well if your furnace is on the main floor. Now to correct the problem that causes the heat gain within the house as a system. Picture in your mind the inner area of the roof cavity with the exposed insulation. With the sun beating down on the roof (asphalt, cedar or tile) the roof cavity gets very hot by radiation from the outside roofing material. The high temperature heats up the insulation and the drywall on the inside of your living cavity radiating down to the area you are trying to cool. Now the next most important step; remove the attic access panel from the ceiling. It may be in a hallway or a closet. If in a closet leave the closet door open. This allows the movement from the furnace blower to move the air up through the attic access hole and out through the roof venting system. This allows the home and roof cavity to cool down with air flow from the basement or crawl space. Now, enjoy your summer weather. moved back upward, so the impact wasn’t as significant as originally anticipated. “The first couple of weeks were rough when nobody really knew what was happening with the detour because originally they weren’t even going to have the road open, but thanks to word of mouth people knew we’re open, so it hasn’t been anything too crazy,” she said. Sarah Toigo with Tsawwassen Springs said people haven’t been staying away and, in fact, there hasn’t been an impact for the golf course or connected businesses. “Actually, the way they (Metro Vancouver) have been running things, I find it quicker getting in and out of here right now than before with the traffic lights. They’re really attentive to people coming and going and there’s always access,” she said. “So, if you’re going down 52nd (Street) into the golf course, you never wait. And if you’re trying

Fears of lost business haven’t materialized due to Metro Vancouver water main work on 52nd Street south of Highway 17. to get onto Highway 17, I’m sure the residents of Imperial Village don’t like the traffic but I think keeping things fluid and open for all the businesses here has been really important,” she added. executive director Lydia Elder said from conversations with members, it looks like the primary impact has been a drop in business from those who would make an impulse decision to stop by as they drive past as well as those who are wary of what they believe would be traffic problems. “With clients who regularly come by for scheduled appointments, classes, tee times, events, etc., there is more consistency as their desire to get their favourite coffee, or preferred cut of steak, is greater than the temporary inconvenience of con-

struction,” she said. “We’re working with these businesses to ensure that we highlight them and remind folks that they’re open for business and accessible during construction,” she added. Elder noted a video promotion campaign, highlighting Tsawwassen and starring member businesses, will take place starting the first week of July. Metro Vancouver says final activities, including cleaning, testing and connecting the new water main to the existing system, will take place from mid-August to early October.

Dr. Susan Steeves,

Private sector should fund port expansion

C.D. Howe Institute says not to use tax dollars SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The Port of Vancouver’s proposed Terminal 2 project should not likely go ahead if taxpayer dollars are needed to help fund it, according to C.D. Howe Institute. The non-profit policy research organization recently published a paper, Casting Off: How Ottawa Can Maximize the Value of Canada’s Major Ports and Benefit Taxpayers, which concluded Ottawa should restrict Canadian port authorities from investing risk capital and instead rely on private capital to finance expansion. Canada’s port infrastructure is generally funded on a user-fee basis, although ports have also received federal infrastructure funding. Canadian ports face competition from American ports that receive subsidies from local governments, but the private sector has demonstrated a willingness to finance incremental investment in needed capital projects. Therefore, the federal government should refrain from investing capital into commercial projects where the expended demand is unclear, the report warns. As far as Terminal 2,

A second container port is proposed for Roberts Bank. the paper notes that while the port authority has committed $863 million of its own funds toward expansion projects, and it’s not direct tax dollars, the money could instead be returned to the federal government and devoted to other priorities. “The need for this terminal is disputed — the port authority believes projected demand justifies it, and operators of competing terminals surprisingly disagree… The ability of the port authority to attract private capital for the full cost of the terminal is a litmus test for whether the expected demand justifies the investment — regardless of whether it is ultimately funded with public or private dollars.” The report also notes that if private capital is unwilling to finance the project, even though it has financed other termi-

nals throughout Canada and the world, it suggests the future demand is too uncertain. Vancouver Fraser Port Authority representatives were asked about future demand and their projections at a presentation to Delta council last week. Cliff Stewart, vicepresident of infrastructure, said the expansion will be required by 2024 to 2026. “There are up years and down years. Last year was a down year but the year before the growth was twice as fast as it was projected to be,” he said. A federal independent panel is now leading the technical review of T2, a proposed three-berth container terminal adjacent to the existing Deltaport container terminal at Roberts Bank. The federal minister in charge is to eventually make a decision on whether the project proceeds.

Ham radio operators descend on North 40 for annual Field Day PHOTOS BY GORD GOBLE

Chris Fast, Doug McBurney, Oswald Keinspfel and fellow members of the Delta Amateur Radio Society set up shop at the North 40 Dog Park in East Ladner last weekend for the annual Field Day. The 24-hour emergency preparedness exercise has grown to involve over 35,000 amateur radio operators throughout North America. The local event included the erection of an antenna (left) in memory of the group’s late president Doug Barry.

chance. He likes people — just not when they number in the tens of thousands. Too bad. On Saturday, by hook or by crook — whatever the heck that means — I plan to place us with plenty of company. “We’re going to a party on Saturday,” I informed him. “There are going to be a lot of people there.” “How many is a lot?” he asked. “Hundreds,” I said. “More than likely thousands. Yes, thousands. And thousands. And thousands.” “I think I’ll take a pass,” he said. “I should probably sweep the driveway. Or cut the grass.” The grass did not need cutting, I told him. And the driveway could wait. “We have to wear red and white,” I continued. “And we might need face paint.” The husband gave me a look that suggested he thought I was mad.

“Face paint?” he asked. “Um, I don’t think so! Besides, I need to vacuum the car. The floor mats are dirty.” The car wouldn’t be here, I informed him. We would need it to drive to the party. “I need to floss my teeth on Saturday,” the husband said. “And I should probably trim my fingernails.” “That will take all of five minutes,” I said. “Come on! Get in the party spirit!” The husband looked glum. He had, by all accounts, run out of excuses. “So,” he said. “Where’s this party?” “I think you mean, ‘Where isn’t this party?’” I said. “There’ll be parties everywhere! You name it!” A light bulb was beginning to go off inside the husband’s head. “Oh,” he said. “It’s something of a special day, isn’t it?” “You betcha, mister!” I said. “We’re going to belt out the anthem! We’re going to be waving the flag!” “Rightio,” said the husband. “I’m in.” Rightio indeed. Come Saturday, we will rise bright and early and head to the bash — or maybe three or four of them. Canada’s big birthday is approaching. The driveway and grass will just have to wait. We’re going to be there for the party.

We are Steve Nobbs and Kevin Ridley of the Runinn Delta. Twenty five years ago we started our first store in Kerrisdale in Vancouver because we were tired of working for a chain store and we wanted to work in the specialty run business. What does that mean? It means that we wanted to help people live better lives through running and fitness, two things that we were passionate about and what we wanted to do every day. From the day we opened Kerrisdale to the day we opened our Tsawwassen store 15 years ago our motto has always been the same. Give great service, with great product knowledge and give back to our community whenever we can. We think we have done a pretty good job and we’re not shy about saying so. Next time you are looking for some athletic footwear, apparel or just some help starting a running program, come by and give us a chance to help you first. We know you won’t be disappointed.

Galamarksamilestone for Sacred Heart Parish

Sacred Heart Parish celebrated a 100-year milestone Friday. The parish officially became part of the Vancouver Archdiocese in 1917 and Sacred Heart marked the occasion with a centenary gala that included a special mass, dinner for 800 outside, music, dancing and fireworks. The event provided a “good opportunity for us to reflect on how far we’ve come and … it also set the stage to realize that we’ve got a big future ahead of us,” said MC, parishioner and centenary committee member Mitch Drew. Speakers included former premier and parishioner Bill Vander Zalm, well-known actor and parishioner Neal McDonough and Sacred Heart Parish Pastor Edgar Polotan.

Drew said speeches included an oral history of the church from the building of the first one in 1891 to the parish joining the Vancouver Archdiocese in 1917 to today and beyond. Organizers Connie Drake and Holly Hastie welcomed over 120 present and past members to the 50th anniversary celebration of the South Delta Newcomers and Alumnae earlier this month at the South Delta Recreation Centre. In 1967, South Delta was a very different community. With the opening of the George Massey Tunnel in 1959, this area attracted young families. Back in the 1960s families only had one car and when the husband went to work, the young moms felt isolated. This isolation necessitated the friendships and support of these young families through coffee parties, craft groups and exchange babysitting. The first newcomers group formed under Doris Postlewaite and met in members’ homes. The mandate of the club is unchanged today – welcoming new women into the community by sharing common interests and developing life-long friendships. This theme was echoed throughout the evening from speakers on each of the five decades. Avril Gauthier and Ann Featherstone, who are still members, provided highlights of what it was like to live here in the ’60s and how Newcomers was their lifeline. Rose Rohaly, president in 1974, shared her stories from the 1970s and even brought with her the South Delta Newcomers Cookbook the group published that year. Roberta Russell spoke of the 1980s and how she and Gayle Quattrochi brought

new energy and ideas to Newcomers. Among their special interest groups was a walking group whose route once a month would be to deliver the newsletters. Steve McQueen (not the actor, but the club’s own Steve McQueen), who was president in 1992, provided highlights from moving from her all-brick Toronto home to her wooden house in Beach Grove and the adjustments and how she brought fun into Newcomers. Connie Drake, president from 2006-08, talked about the changes that were brought to the club with the computer as a communications tool between the monthly meetings and a way to deliver the club’s monthly newsletter. Linda Rigby, the current president, spoke about how the club continues to thrive with its 117 members. She read congratulatory letters from National Newcomers of Canada, and a letter from Brenda Bourdeau, a former member who has moved back to Ontario and a card from the Vancouver Newcomers Alumnae. Janet Rodgers, a past member and the incoming president of the Vancouver Newcomers alumnae, presented long stem red roses and thank-you notes to the 17 past presidents in attendance. The evening concluded with the club’s annual Strawberry Social. The Newcomers group meets the third Thursday, September through June, at the Kiwanis Longhouse in Tsawwassen at 7 p.m. If you are new to the area, the group welcomes you.

St. Andrew’s inviting kids to attend Sunday school

St. Andrew’s Anglican Church is looking to start a Sunday school. “We want to invite kids to come out. We want families to know that they’re welcome and we want it to be a fun atmosphere for kids,” said Rev. Danielle Martell. The school is aimed at kids from three to 12 and would include crafts, games and stories. The church has traditional Christian values and would like to teach kids about the Bible and give them hope in Jesus, Martell says. “The biggest reason [behind starting the Sunday school] is because we want to share the good news of Jesus with children and we think children are really valuable and an important part of the church community.” The church’s weekly service takes place at 9 a.m. Sundays at 1710-56th St. (the South Delta Artists Guild building next to the

A simple cupcake sale by Grade 1 students at English Bluff Elementary turned into a school-wide effort to spread some love and support to a local organization. The acts of kindness and fundraising started after teacher MaryAnn Scarr read an article in the Optimist about the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society. “I wasn’t even aware of the (Volunteer Cancer) Drivers Society until I read your article,” Scarr recalled. “I’m always looking for ways that we can teach our young children to be better citizens, so I brought the article into the class and we started brainstorming ways that we could help.” As she joked with her students that they couldn’t help as drivers because they were not old enough yet, the students thought a cupcake sale would be a good way to raise money. The baking began and in the end $258 was raised. But Scarr and her students were not done. They came up with the Spreading Smiles campaign and got the whole school involved. “I came up with a template and every student one day drew a picture on the yellow paper. It looks

like a little scroll tied with yellow ribbon because yellow is the cancer colour,” she said. “The idea is the society can hand these out to the patients they are driving with the hope that is spreads a smile and just let’s these folks know that we are thinking about them.” Society president Garth Pinton said the support from the students is appreciated. “We are so thrilled by your support behind this. Coordinating the children and parents to make and sell the cupcakes (is) a wonderful idea,” Pinton said. The Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society was established in 2015 following the unexpected cancellation of a similar program offered by the Canadian Cancer Society. The society serves Delta, Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford, Maple Ridge, Mission, the TriCities, New Westminster and North and West Vancouver. Volunteer drivers offer round trip transportation for patients in these areas for treatment at facilities across the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley. There are 29 drivers operating in the Delta/ Surrey area that so far in the first five months of 2017 have made 947 patient trips.

Alumnitourney allaboutGraeme SDSS soccer graduates come together to help raise money for Carswell award MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Graeme Carswell touched the lives of many and that was evident at the South Delta Secondary School oval on Saturday afternoon. It was in February of last year when Carswell lost his life in a tragic fishing accident on the Chilliwack River. He was just 21. It didn’t take long for the community to find ways to honour the SDSS graduate and national level field hockey standout. The Sun Devils soccer program created an alumni game with all proceeds going to the Graeme Carswell Follow Your Dreams Award. About 30 graduates participated in this year’ event that featured seven-a-side mini-games and a post-match social at the Rose and Crown Pub for further fundraising. The cost was $30 and included a commemorative T-Shirt with all proceeds going to the Carswell award. “He had such great spirit. Everything he did was with a smile on his face yet he was a real competitor. He was one of those rare kids that can be competitive but still be nice too,” said longtime South Delta teacher Stephen Burns, who coached Carswell in soccer and at the school and community levels. “Graeme was not only a good athlete but a musician too. He was able to get along with so many different groups of people in the school,” added SDSS athletic director and co-coach Brent Sweeney. “Quite often you will see athletes hanging out only with athletes or musicians stick-

He was a great kid who basically had no enemies.” Burns and Sweeney received input from Carswell’s parents Kim and Kathleen on criteria for the Follow Your Dreams Award. Initial winner Eric Swanson and this year’s recpient Thorsten Schaub happen to be standout players that also had other deserving qualities. “It doesn’t necessarily even have to be a soccer player,” con-

tinued Sweeney. “It’s somebody, boy or girl, with leadership, kindness and perhaps athleticism too. Graeme wasn’t the greatest of soccer players but he was certainly a very tough guy to play against and those are the sort of qualities we are looking for. “Ideally, we would like to increase the funding and the Carswells can give out two scholarships down the line.” The Graeme Carswell Follow Your Dreams Awards was also

established by the Falcons Field Hockey Club. Last week, the Falcons announced Brendan Guraliuk as the 2017 winner. Guraliuk was recently named to the 2020 junior men’s national team and volunteers a tremendous amount of his time to the club as a umpire and a coach. Krista Jensen won the inaugural award a year earlier thanks to her talent on the field and immense contributions to the game off of it.

Pioneers closing in on first place finish MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Sitting atop the league standings is nothing new for the Ladner Pioneers. The way they are doing it most certainly is. The storied franchise has enjoyed plenty of success as a perennial frontrunner in the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association. This year is no exception. Ladner improved to a 9-1-0 with an 11-5 win in Coquitlam on Sunday night and are on the verge of locking up first place and a bye directly to the league semi-finals. The Pioneers are surrendering just six goals per game, which is far and away best in the league. They have always had solid goaltending and take pride in their defensive play. Ladner also tops the circuit in scoring and, surprisingly, is the WCSLA’s least penalized team. For years, intimidation was a key ingredient in the club’s success. Now it’s more about a young roster deep in talent that thrives playing a run-and-gun style. “We used to go into each season thinking we needed 250 goals for, 100 against and about 1,000 penalty minutes,” chuckled head coach Ross Frehlick. “Now it’s all about playing uptempo lacrosse. Our goal is to got out there and play at a pace other teams can’t keep up with. “It definitely is a new era for lacrosse here. We have never had a team like this

Ladner Pioneers Nathan Clare fends off a pair of Royal City opponents in Thursday’s 10-9 home floor win. The Pioneers now sit at 9-1-0. before.” The regular season is unfolding exactly the way the club had hoped knowing all along three key players will soon be leaving for the European Box Lacrosse Championships in Finland. Nathan and Sam Clare, along with Dan McDermott, will be suiting up for Team England. The trio are key pieces in the Pioneers’ success with Clare brothers providing plenty of offence and McDermott anchoring the back end.

The hope was first place would nearly be locked up before their departure. They will play their final game Thursday (8 p.m.) at home against Coquitlam and a win would give Ladner a five-point cushion on Langley with three games left. At very worst, a top two finish would advance Ladner directly to the WCLA semi-finals and the trio would not miss any post-season action. That doesn’t mean the Pioneers aren’t

looking to add some depth prior for the stretch run. They welcomed back one of their alltime greats when goalie Rob Cook decided he wasn’t finished stopping shots at the age of 49. He joins Nathan Wilson and Kevin Hill to give Ladner three quality netminders. Wilson was excellent in a big 10-5 win at Langley on June 16 and Cook made a solid debut in last Thursday’s 10-9 triumph over a tough Royal City team. It was Hill’s turn in Sunday’s win over Coquitlam. Frehlick has no concern carrying three goalies the rest of the way but it does give him one fewer option for runners on his 25-man roster with three regulars about to head to to Europe. He called-up juniors Riley Taylor and Jayven Gill for the Coquitlam game and wants both to be eligible for the playoffs, along with part-time veterans Quinn Waddington and Travis St. Germain. The hope is Mike Berekoff will be available too. The local standout led the team with 40 goals last season. “Rob called me up and said he wanted to play. There is no way we would ever say no to him with everything he has done for this team,” added Frehlick. “He’s not our No. 1 goalie. Right now, I don’t know who that is We wanted to carry three goalies all along and we are in a good position. “We are also looking at potentially adding a couple of WLA cuts.”

ELPHICK, Bradley Craig 1959-2017 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brad Elphick. After a courageous four year battle he left us on June 18th, 2017. He will be deeply missed by his wife and soulmate Shelly and their children, his pride and joys, Brett and Brooke. Dearly loved by his mother, Barbara Matters, brother Steven (Paula), sisters Diane (James Sealy), Barb (Brian Ferguson), Nanci (Scott Stubbington), his in-laws and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his dad Arthur, stepdad Jerry Matters and brother Rick. Brad loved and was loved by friends too numerous to count who enriched his life as much as he did theirs. Brad will be remembered as an athlete and artist, a family man and friend. Through this journey, Brad fostered a passion for art and photography which he so generously shared with others. Daily walks on the beach inspired the themes of his life and his art; nature, joy, faith and the greatest of these, Love. Please join us in celebrating Brad’s life on his birthday, Monday, July 10 from 3-5 pm at Cammidge House, Delta BC. In lieu of flowers, donations are kindly accepted to the Delta Hospice Society who were true angels in their love and care or to the BC Cancer Agency, in support of brain cancer research.

Our beloved mom Marg, 94, died on May 27 in Tsawwassen. She leaves five children, nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. She will be sorely missed. Please join us for a Celebration of Life on Wednesday, July 5th at 1 PM at Beach Grove Golf Club 5946 12th Ave, Tsawwassen, BC. Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040
