Several SOFA plans kick off this summer

DELRAY BEACH, FL – In partnership with the City of Delray Beach and local developers, the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) held a meeting on Thursday, June 19th at the Delray Beach Library to launch and discuss the creation of a new district known as “South of Atlantic,” or SOFA. The new district is expected to become an important investment into the revitalization and growth of downtown Delray Beach.

S The SOFA district is an unnamed commercial area that is set to extend the downtown area south of Atlantic Ave.

This SOFA district consists of the area from SE 1 Ave. east to SE 5 Ave., and from SE 2 Ave. north to the Alleyway just south of Atlantic Ave. The meeting gathered the business and property owners within this community to announce the beginning of several new development plans that are expected to begin in August. occer Shots players and parents benefit from learning the skills of the game, sportsmanship and character from professional soccer players each Saturday at Veterans Park in Delray Beach. Last year, Soccer Shots coaches midfielder Daniel Villegas and forward Edvin Worley were playing professional soccer as members of the Wichita Wings Major League Indoor Soccer League. This dynamic coaching duo now calls Boca Raton home and in January 2014, started Soccer Shots, a youth soccer skills tutorial, and character building program for children ages 2-5 held each Saturday at Veterans Park. The City of Delray Beach and the Delray Beach Police Department are proud to announce that Jeffrey S. Goldman has been selected as Chief of Police for the City of Delray Beach, to begin September 1, 2014. The position of Chief became available upon the retirement announcement of Police Chief Anthony Strianese. Chief Strianese will be retiring effective August 31, 2014, after twenty-five years of dedicated service. Assistant Chief Goldman has served in his current position since 2011. He is a seasoned and educated law enforcement executive with over twenty-five years of progressive urban policing experience. Hired by the City in 1989, he rose through the ranks of the command staff and has led several divisions including Community Patrol, Criminal Investigations, Support Services and SWAT.

Delray Chamber’s NonProfit Council Members Learn About Local Hunger DELRAY BEACH, FL – Members of the Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce’s Non Profit Council made and ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches during the recent June meeting, which focused on hunger in Delray Beach. “Our goal was to remind our members that for some people in our community a peanut butter and jelly sandwich may be all they have to eat that day,” said Lynn Van Lenten, chamber member-relations coordinator and liaison to the non profit council. “We also wanted people to see how CROS Ministries, a council member, is helping meet the needs of those in Delray who don’t get enough to eat.” During the monthly meeting at the city of Delray Beach’s Pompey Park, a group of more than 60 Non Profit Council members heard from featured speaker Juanita Bryant Goode of CROS Ministries, who offered an overview of the needs in the community and of the work Continued on page 7 her organization is doing to address
