B

OCA RATON, FL -- Florida Atlantic University’s Peace Studies Program in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters and Peaceful Mind Peaceful Life will host James Finley at a conference called “A Path to Inner Peace: Freeing the Mind and Heart through Spiritual Sobriety.” The conference, underwritten by the Schmidt Family Foundation, will take place from Friday, April 10 through Sunday, April 12 in the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing Auditorium on FAU’s Boca Raton campus. During the conference, Finley will discuss how the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous are not just for addicts, but can help to set one free from habits of the mind and heart that perpetuate suffering.

James Finley

Finley lived as a monk at the cloistered Trappist monastery of the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky where the worldrenowned monk and author Thomas Merton was his spiritual director. Merton studied Eastern meditation techniques and is credited with reviving an interest in Christian meditation. After six years, Finley left the monastery and went on to earn degrees from the University of Akron, Saint John College and the Fuller Theological Seminary. Finley now leads retreats and workshops throughout the United States and Canada and is also a clinical psychologist in private practice. His books include “Merton’s Palace of Nowhere,” “The Contemplative Hearts” and “Christian Meditation: Continued on page 5 Experiencing the Presence of God.”

Tony Orlando

Break out the yellow ribbons and knock three times on the ceiling. Vocalist Tony Orlando will visit the city this month to pay homage to a couple of his musical friends being honored by the Boca Symphonia. To celebrate its 10th anniversary, the Symphonia will present its first-ever Apollo Awards for musical excellence to longtime Boca arts patrons Edith and Martin B. Stein. Also scheduled to receive the specially designed statuette are two internationally known composers: Boca resident Dennis Lambert, who wrote “Ain’t no Woman Like the One I Got,” “We Built this City on Rock and Roll” and many more hits in the 80’s and 90’s, and the late Ervin Drake, who wrote American Songbook standards, including Frank Sinatra’s “It Was a Very Good Year,” will also be honored. Drake died in January at age 95. The celebration will be held April 18 at Jazziz in Mizner Park, 201 Plaza Real, Boca Raton. The evening will include a 6 p.m. VIP Meet and Greet with Orlando and the award winners, a 7 p.m. cocktail reception and an 8 p.m. award presentation. A Manhattan-born performer of Greek and Puerto Rican ancestry, Orlando is marking his 54th year in show biz since his first hit, the Carole King-Gerry Goffin melody “Halfway to Paradise,” charted in 1961. But he is likely best known for fronting the musical group, Dawn – with Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent -- during most of the 1970s. “They were performing as background singers at the time. I asked them to be part of the act,” said Orlando. “We were the first multi-racial performing group. We received a ‘Pioneers of Television’ award from the Public Broadcasting System.” As to his upcoming visit, Orlando, in a telephone interview, said, “I love Boca Raton, so many of my friends are there. HELENA RUBINSTEIN: BEAUTY IS POWER Opening at Boca Raton Museum of Art April 21

BOCA RATON, FL (March 25, 2015) – Helena Rubinstein: Beauty Is Power is organized by The Jewish Museum, New York and opens to the public on April 21, 2015 at the Boca Raton Museum of Art, 501 Plaza Real, Boca Raton, FL. This exhibition is made possible by The Jerome L. Green Foundation. Programming and events schedule is available at www.bocamuseum.org. The name Helena Rubinstein conjures up elegant images of international beauty salons and fabulously packaged cosmetics that rivaled Estée Lauder and Elizabeth Arden. Madame, as she was known, changed the way women envisioned themselves and empowered women to define and assert their individuality beginning in the early twentieth century. This is just a dab of blush compared to the depth and breadth of Rubinstein’s accomplishments including visionary art collector, entrepreneur, and one of the first female self-made magnates. Rubinstein’s lush, inspiring story comes to life – and to Boca Raton via The Jewish Museum in New York City -- in the varied and significant exhibition, Helena Rubinstein: Beauty Is Power organized by Mason Klein. According to Mason Klein, “Helena Rubinstein: Beauty Is Power explores how Madame helped break down the status quo of taste by blurring boundaries between commerce, art, fashion, beauty, and design.” The exhibition includes works of art, photographs, and ephemera which reveal how Continued on page 7
