APRIL 2014
Sit down with newly elected Boca Raton Mayor Susan Haynie
O
n March 11, 2014, Susan Haynie, previously the Deputy Mayor of the City of Boca Raton, won the election for Mayor, a hotly contested race against one of her City Council colleagues, Anthony Majhess. With a vote of 6,250 for Haynie versus 4,716 for Majhess, Haynie told supporters during her victory party, “I am so thankful that the voters have spoken and they have chosen my leadership.” To coincide with the inaugural issue of the Boca Raton Pineapple, Ryan Boylston, co-founder of the newspaper, sat down for a candid interview with Boca Raton’s new mayor. Boylston: So, why run for Mayor? Mayor Haynie: Well, I’ve served on the council for a total of 12 years. I served 6 years, completed my service and then enjoyed private life for 2 years. At that point I was recruited to come back and served another 6 years. I was term limited as a council member, and I felt that I had the experience and leadership that this community needed at this time and place, so I put my name in the race. Boylston: Welcome back, again! Mayor Haynie: Thank you, I’m thrilled. Boylston: Sounds like the community is too. What are some of the hot topics the community wants you to address? Mayor Haynie: We’ve just come out of the recession and things are really starting to engage again. You see cranes in the Boca Raton Mayor Susan Haynie sky, and you know, during the campaign we heard a lot of individuals express concern about balancing development with quality of life. Traffic has been an issue, and the long-term fiscal sustainability of our community has been a big topic, because of public safety cost. So those are probably the closest things on the horizon that need to be addressed. Boylston: What is your feeling about downtown density? Mayor Haynie: Well you know, the idea of a downtown is a topic that we need to educate our residents about - and it’s something I’m going to present to the new council. In 1987 the community voted to create the downtown DORI and entitled it with 8 million square feet of buildable rights and a whole host of Continued on page 3 infrastructure that was put in place.
