FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Just before students left for winter break, I watched a Form 7 student take a moment out of her busy day to hold the door for a group of Lower School students returning from a rainy-day walk, admiring each as they walked by.
I love getting the opportunity to talk with someone who has just completed a tour of the school, especially if they are seeing it for the first time. Almost one for one, I can count on them starting with, “I just can’t believe…”, and ending with something like this:
“…every student I passed in the hall looked me in the eye and said hello!”
“…how poised and confident the student tour guide was!”
“...how well the student body was getting along in the dining room!”
“...EVERY student was actually STUDYING!”
“...how friendly everyone was!”
Touring Delphian for the first time has a tendency to clash with what one expects to see in a K-12 school. The culture of the student body is visible and unmistakable as is the integrity of each individual that makes it up.
It is so unmistakable that the majority of families that make it here for a tour end up enrolling. I would like to ask for your help in getting people here to campus to experience and understand what Delphian is and what it can be for their children.
Walking through the school recently, I was reminded of a precept from The Way to Happiness.
“Now what do you suppose would happen if one were to try to treat those around him with justness, loyalty, good sportsmanship, fairness, honesty, kindness, consideration, compassion, self-control, tolerance, forgivingness, benevolence, belief, respect, politeness, dignity, admiration, friendliness, love, and did it with integrity?”
“It might take a while but don’t you suppose that many others would then begin to try to treat one the same way?”
“The pebble, dropped in a pool, can make ripples to the furthest shore.” -
L. Ron Hubbard
The first such pebble was dropped into the pool of Delphian’s student body 47 years ago. New pebbles are dropped by countless staff and students every day.
I believe those of us that see the school and interact with its students frequently can easily forget just how special they are. The next time you are here, walk around and do your best to see the school as if you too were seeing it for the first time. Maybe I’ll see you after your tour and you’ll say, “I just can’t believe…!”
All my best,

THE GOLDEN RULE
“TRY TO TREAT OTHERS AS YOU WOULD WANT THEM TO TREAT YOU.”
Excerpts from precept 20, The Way to Happiness
by L. Ron Hubbard
f one were to think over how he or she would like to be treated by others, one would evolve the human virtues. Just figure out how you would want people to treat you
“You would possibly, first of all, want to be treated justly: you wouldn’t want people lying about you or falsely or harshly condemning you. Right?
“You would probably want your friends and companions to be loyal: you would not want them to betray you.
“You could want to be treated with good sportsmanship, not hoodwinked nor tricked.
“You would want people to be fair in their dealings with you.
“You would want them to be honest with you and not cheat you. Correct?
“You might want to be treated kindly and without cruelty.
“You would possibly want people to be considerate of your rights and feelings.
“When you were down, you might like others to be compassionate
“Instead of blasting you, you would probably want others to exhibit self-control. Right?
“If you had any defects or shortcomings, if you made a mistake, you might want people to be tolerant, not critical.
“Rather than concentrating on censure and punishment, you would prefer people were forgiving. Correct?
“You might want people to be benevolent toward you, not mean nor stingy.

“I
“When one is lucky enough to get to meet and talk to the men and women who are at the top of their professions, one is struck by an observation often made that they are just about the nicest people you ever met.”
“Your possible desire would be for others to believe in you, not doubt you at every hand.
“You would probably prefer to be given respect, not insulted.
“Possibly you would want others to be polite to you and also treat you with dignity. Right?
“You might like people to admire you.
“When you did something for them you would possibly like people to appreciate you. Correct?
“You would probably like others to be friendly toward you.
“From some you might want love
“And above all, you wouldn’t want these people just pretending these things, you would want them to be quite real in their attitudes and to be acting with integrity
“You could possibly think of others. And there are the precepts contained in this book. But above you would have worked out the summary of what are called the virtues
“It requires no great stretch of imagination for one to recognize that if he were to be treated that way regularly by others around him, his life would exist on a pleasant level. And it is doubtful if one would build up much animosity toward those who treated him in this fashion.”
one is struck by an observation often made that they are just about the nicest people you ever met. That is one of the reasons they are at the top: they try, most of them, to treat others well. And those around them respond and tend to treat them well and even forgive their few shortcomings.
“All right: one can work out for himself the human virtues just by recognizing how he himself would like to be treated. And from that, I think you will agree, one has settled any confusions as to what ‘good conduct’ really is. It’s a far cry from being inactive, sitting still with your hands in your lap and saying nothing. ‘Being good’ can be a very active and powerful force.
“There is little joy to be found in gloomy, restrained solemnity. When some of old made it seem that to practice virtue required a grim and dismal sort of life, they tended to infer that all pleasure came from being wicked: nothing could be further from the facts. Joy and pleasure do not come from immorality! Quite the reverse! Joy and pleasure arise only in honest hearts: the immoral lead unbelievably tragic lives filled with suffering and pain. The human virtues have little to do with gloominess. They are the bright face of life itself.”
“The way to happiness is made much brighter by applying the precept, ‘Try to treat others as you would want them to treat you.’ ”
“When one is lucky enough to get to meet and talk to the men and women who are at the top of their professions,

A tribute to Steve Anderson
Delphian Alumnus and Late Chairman of the Board
After graduating from Delphian in 1987, Steve became a big player and supporter of the Delphian game in countless ways. He and his wife, Jennifer, did tremendous volunteer work for us, from hosting guests on campus to referring dozens of students to the school and assisting with admissions tours. Their two oldest daughters, Maxine and Maisee, are alumni, and their youngest daughter, Mila, is currently in her senior year.
Steve and his wife Jennifer were also leading contributors to nearly every fundraising campaign since 1992, moving up the donor categories each year to become Delphian Benefactors with Honors this past year. He and Jennifer sponsored the last several Parents Weekend fundraisers that raised pledges totaling more than $5 million.
In 2011, Steve took on even more ownership of the group and joined our board of trustees. He then became Chairman of the Board in June 2019, following the retirement of founding staff member and board chair, Greg Ott.
In the 1980s, a few awards were given to students with outstanding characteristics who needed special recognition. Steve was one of those students. The Reliability Award was given for showing up and doing the work. It was presented to students who could be consistently counted on to contribute to the Delphian community by rolling up their sleeves and lending a hand. Steve received this award twice while enrolled at Delphian and continued to be highly deserving of it throughout his life.
Beyond what he contributed to and for the school over the years, Steve always brought a verve and vitality with him. Those who knew him would say he lit up any room he entered with his bright smile, enthusiastic warmth, and the energy he carried. Steve was a big thinker and a doer, embodying everything Delphian stands for and more.
We will be eternally grateful for all of his contributions to the Delphian community.

District Champions!
Another stellar year for the Dragon soccer stars
Our record for the regular season was 5 wins, 0 losses and 2 ties. The team was undefeated! We placed first in the league which set us up to play our undefeated rival for the district championship. Our team stepped up to the pressure during a very rainy game, winning 5-0 and securing a state playoff spot. This was Delphian’s first hosted States game in nearly seven years. Winning again and moving on to the quarter-finals, we fought hard but lost in an overtime penalty shootout.
Delphian was awarded the Sportsmanship Award for the second year in a row. It can be very hard to keep your temper in check when other teams test you and push the boundaries. The whole team made a conscious effort the last couple of years to show grit through play, not words. Most importantly, the team learned what it takes to complete a goal. They learned how to do this as a group–together. They got to see first-hand all of the actions, thoughts, conversations, adjustments, corrections, practices, and inspections it takes to make their goal a reality. We are very proud of them! Go Dragons!

An Unusual Community
Celebrating the class of 2012
After two years of disruptions due to the pandemic, Delphian alumni returned to campus in October for the first “normal” Alumni Weekend in three years. While alumni and faculty enjoyed returning to their yearly fall tradition, anyone who has attended Alumni Weekend can attest that “normal” is actually the last word that comes to mind. This feeling got staff thinking about the purpose of Alumni Weekend and newly appreciating what the weekend means to both attendees and for the Delphian School as an institution.
First, the number of Delphian alumni that attend the weekend is exceptional. For comparison, approximately 20% to 30% of an average American high school class will attend their ten-year high school reunion. At Delphian, 60% to 70% of every graduating class attends their tenyear reunion. Also, despite having an average graduating class of twenty-five students, nearly two hundred alumni in total from every decade of the school’s history attend Alumni Weekend every fall.
Clearly one major purpose of Alumni Weekend is to provide an opportunity for our former students to reconnect with the faculty and their friends. Alumni have described the sense of returning to Delphian to check on each other, the school, and its faculty as “coming home.”
Another vital purpose of Alumni Weekend is to help the school flourish and grow. Every fall many alumni attending the weekend take the opportunity to donate towards campus improvements or pledge to volunteer their time and expertise toward student and faculty projects. Alumni thus play an integral part in maintaining the school’s community and forwarding its mission: “to empower young adults to bring positive change in the world through reason, creativity and integrity.”
To all the alumni who attended this past fall – thank you for being a part of the thriving Delphian community. We hope to see everyone again next year!

New Delphian Alumni Website!
Staying connected is now easier than ever
This Alumni Weekend we were able to announce the launch of our alumni networking website, www.DelphianAlumni.org.
This new website is designed to bring the alumni community together as a powerful and supportive group. It allows alumni to connect directly with former classmates, offer and access mentorships, share job postings, access a business directory, and browse groupbased discussion boards that can be sorted by industry, interest or location.
We strongly encourage all Delphian alumni to register today!

YOUR IMPACT
It’s what Dragons do Giving back Y
our annual gifts have made learning possible both inside and outside the classroom. From supporting scholarships to sports to special projects –– your contributions create ripple effects as students go on to become self-determined, independent thinkers and pursue their individualized study programs tailored to their dreams and goals.
Thank you for furthering the education of amazing Delphian students and helping them to “Start Here” and “Go Anywhere.”
YOU ARE CHANGING LIVES.
Delphian relies on visionary philanthropy to support our mission, students, programs, and future. Parents and grandparents give because they witness the impact of a Delphian education on their child or grandchild. Alumni give because they value the lasting effect Delphian has had on their lives.
The Annual Fund is the school’s only yearly fundraising
initiative, and support comes from every corner of our community. Gifts to the Delphian Annual Fund make up the difference between the annual operating budget and tuition revenues and are put to immediate use, ensuring that every student can benefit each year from an exceptional, rigorous academic program led by dedicated faculty and has access to state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and supplies.
Every gift — no matter the size — counts and is needed and appreciated. Robust Annual Fund participation is a valuable endorsement of our school and our community.
Last year, because of your generous support, Delphian was able to build a new, larger student mailroom and build covered fan stands at the soccer and track field, complete with a concessions stand and bathroom. These projects were financed 100% with fundraised dollars. Your support makes a huge difference in the school’s future, and is what makes it possible for Delphian to remain competitive while carrying out its mission. Thank you!

“Completing this project creates a far better experience for our great fans, with the covered stands, food truck and bathrooms.
“The sound system allows us to further enhance the experience, as well as help with track meets and other events hosted at the field.

FALL PLAY
A Murder is Announced
A
Murder is Announced is based on the novel of the same name by Agatha Christie. The play takes place in a sitting room in the home of Letitia Blacklock (Coco RoseCoates) called Little Paddocks.
One October on Friday the 13th, a typically uneventful day becomes tense when Bunny (Elizabeth Swan) sees an ad in the newspaper which states that a murder will occur at 6:30pm in Miss Blacklock’s Victorian house.
It turns out that the victim is not one of the house’s several occupants, but an unexpected and unknown visitor. What follows is a classic puzzle where an eccentric inspector (Odin Vargas) takes the lead in discovering who did it along with help from Miss Marple (Ella Feilmeier). With many twists and turns, they uncover mixed motives, concealed identities, and even a second death!
This humorous show keeps the audience on the edge of their seats while the mystery unfolds.
