ON A MISSION

TO REVOLUTIONIZE HOW PEOPLE GET & STAY HEALTHY

Dell Medical School is rethinking the role of academic medicine in improving health — with a unique focus on community.

WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT

Unprecedented Community Partnership

In 2012, Travis County residents voted to invest in a new medical school, the first built at a top-tier research university in nearly 50 years. The result was Dell Med, a new kind of school focused on improving health locally and equitably as a model for the nation.

A Foundation for Collaboration

As part of The University of Texas at Austin, one of the country’s leading research universities, Dell Med benefits from cross-campus collaborations that bring business expertise, engineering capability, nursing know-how and other vital perspectives to every aspect of our work.

Starting From Scratch

At the same time, with the opportunity to start from scratch comes the freedom to try new things — the first step toward our aspirational mission to revolutionize how people get and stay healthy.

The Central Texas community charged Dell Med with creating better health for all. And we’re just getting started.

EDUCATION THE RIGHT LEADERS

People are why we’re here, and they’re key to our success. Dell Med has assembled a talented, visionary team, starting with top doctors and researchers from around the country. As faculty, they train tomorrow’s physician leaders, care for patients and work with the community to identify health challenges and develop new ways of solving them.

As they shape the future of health and health care, they prepare the next generation of doctors to do the same. Our exceptional students — chosen not only for their intellect but also for their big-picture thinking, creativity and public service — are trailblazers in their own right.

Dell Med fosters medical students as health leaders with a groundbreaking curriculum that:

• Introduces patient care a year earlier with a focus on empathy and communication;

• Allows for the completion of dual degrees in business, engineering, design, health care transformation, public health and other areas;

• Emphasizes teamwork and problem-solving through courses with UT Austin students studying nursing, pharmacy and social work; and

• Incorporates training in value-based health care.

The Work of Our Teams

More than 340 residents and fellows, physicians in training, are providing 700,000+ hours of care at 75+ clinics and hospitals across Central Texas, including at Ascension Seton and CommUnityCare Health Centers.

And our leaders, working alongside partners, are redesigning the continuum of care for brain health, expanding pediatric specialty care, tackling the opioid crisis, playing critical roles in managing COVID-19 and more.

CLINICAL CARE A FOCUS ON VALUE … & YOU

Your reasons for wanting to get and stay healthy are just as important to us as they are to you.

UT Health Austin, the clinical practice of Dell Medical School, puts you, your family, your goals and your needs at the forefront of your care, bringing an elevated level of excellence to value-based health care in Texas.

Teams of health professionals come together to deliver an uncompromising quality of care in specialties across musculoskeletal and women’s health, primary care, neurology, oncology and more. To continuously improve patient outcomes, we are always learning and improving care delivery based on research and data collected through clinical care.

Where possible, we have redesigned the care model to enable patients to see multiple specialists during the same visit depending on their specific health needs. This multidisciplinary, coordinated care model makes it easier for you to get the care you need without having to make multiple trips to various locations.

Part of Dell Med’s responsibility is to serve the community of Central Texas. We do this by not only providing care, but also supporting our physician leaders in modeling new ways of delivering care that build a better, more equitable system.

Our goal? Make care more accessible to you.

BUILDING THE HEALTHSCAPE WHERE WE LIVE, WORK, LEARN & PLAY

Some of Dell Med’s most important work is happening outside our classrooms and clinics; this is the focus of our fourth mission pillar, the Healthscape. Because no one understands a community’s challenges like the people who live in it, Dell Med works with community organizations to identify opportunities and address problems specific to their lives and the lives of those around them.

We also know that meaningful health care reform will require new economic models that reward the right things: programs that support health regardless of where they are delivered.

A New Business of Health

Dell Med’s Factor Health brings together social service providers, health care payers and investors in new ways, building programs that make people healthier and proving that they work — a critical step that makes it possible for insurance to pay for them.

Examples: In partnership with Meals on Wheels Central Texas, Factor Health is proving that medically tailored meals and companionship improve the health of older adults managing diabetes in their homes. And with Boys and Girls Clubs of the Austin Area and the UTHealth School of Public Health, we’re showing how education, exercise and family health coaching improve the health of kids enough for payers to pay for outcomes.

INNOVATION & RESEARCH HARNESSING OPPORTUNITY, EXPANDING IMPACT

As part of The University of Texas at Austin, a national research powerhouse, Dell Med is poised for discoveries that lead to medical breakthroughs, new insights and new ways of keeping people healthy.

With emerging centers of excellence in brain health, cardiovascular health, cancer and pediatrics, our expert faculty address new and longstanding clinical challenges to improve prevention, diagnostics, treatment and recovery, with a focus on translational research that leverages discovery in direct pursuit of improving health.

Data & Technology: New Tools for Better Care

Data and technology are the medical instruments of the future. Together, they will give health care providers critical information about air quality in the neighborhoods of people living with asthma. They’ll allow patients to access medical records from anywhere. And they will warn doctors when the way a woman is using her phone means there may be a problem with her pregnancy.

Dell Med is working on these examples and more as it positions itself to play a leading role in the development of data solutions in health.

MISSION Revolutionize how people get and stay healthy by: • Improving health in our community as a model for the nation; • Evolving new models of person-centered, multidisciplinary care that reward value; • Accelerating innovation and research to improve health; • Educating leaders who transform health care; and • Redesigning the academic health environment to better serve society.
