Home & Interiors Invaluable Decorating Tips By Katherine Sorrell

Planning changes to your home? Interiors expert Katherine Sorrell has some handy hints…

Living rooms • Use a scale plan of your room with cut out mini furniture items, and move these around until you find the right positions.

• The alcoves either side of a chimney breast are perfect for creating extra storage.

• For maximum light, fit a pole or track that overhangs far enough each on side of the window to allow the curtains to be drawn right back.

• Avoid using a central hanging pendant as the only light source, but add in table lamps, floor lamps and wall lamps for a more flexible and flattering ambience.

• Consider ways to disguise the TV when not in use – can you adapt a piece of furniture, such as an armoire, so that it sits behind closed doors when necessary?

Kitchens • Have tall cupboards at one end of your cupboard run, with the hob nearby and plenty of worktop space between the hob and the sink. Add the dishwasher on the other side of the sink.

• If possible, make worktops 700mm deep instead of 600mm, to give more working space and to better accommodate a large sink.

• In an open-plan kitchen, choose quiet appliances, and design so the washing up is hidden from the view of the dining table.

• Paint the inside of a wall cabinet door with blackboard paint to give somewhere to write a shopping list.

• Base cabinets on legs, or recessed plinths, make the room seem larger.

• Cover boring walls with blackboard paint, magnetic wallpaper, peg board, maps or wall stickers.

• A high-level bed provides space beneath for study, play or storage.

• Fit a dimmer switch so you can adjust the light from bright for playing or reading to soft and calm at bedtime.

• Storage is all-important. Felt tips and paint brushes can be kept in tins, though beware of sharp edges. For storing tiny Lego sets and the like, ice cream tubs or shoe boxes are ideal.

Bedrooms • Plan storage with precision, and divide the interior of your wardrobe into hanging space plus shelves, drawers and shoe racks. Consider storage gadgets such as belt racks and pull-out trays.

• Maximise space by building fitted wardrobes right up to the ceiling.

• Add a blackout lining to your curtains, or choose wooden shutters for additional sound and draught-proofing, and security.

• Swing-arm lights on either side of the bed free up space on bedside tables.

• A blanket box at the end of the bed is ideal for storing bedding and doubles as a seat.

• If you’re on a budget, invest more in taps, shower doors and bath screens and save on a plain white suite, adding decorative appeal with tiles and attractive accessories.

• Wall-hung WCs and washbasins create the illusion of extra space.

• Hide pipework under floorboards or behind false walls and punch shallow shelves into the studwork to create useful storage niches.

• Lights on both sides of your washbasin mirror dispel unflattering shadows.

• Chosen a cast iron bath?

St Cuthbert’s Badminton Club

St. Cuthbert’s Church Hall in Westgarth Avenue was built in 1926. The Architect was Alexander Lorne Campbell and the building was erected beside the Episcopal Church by Wm. Gerrard & Son of Edinburgh, the two buildings being connected by a passage. Over �me, extensions have taken place to provide accommoda�on either side of the passage.

The original Hall plan envisaged a clergy vestry and other accommoda�on with a sizeable stage at one end. But by 1933, clearly the stage was taking up useful space so the vestry was converted into a ‘pla�orm room’ where the dismantled stage sec�ons could be stored and brought out as necessary. The floor space thus released enabled the Hall to be used as a full­length, if not quite a full­width badminton court. Whether badminton was one of the influences in the altera�ons is not known, but it created the more flexible space we have today.

During World War II, the Hall was used by the Auxiliary Fire Brigade. When they no longer needed the space, it became available for others. By 1948, there was an established badminton club and for a number of years, table tennis was played in an adjacent room.

While the club has had an unbroken existence for nearly 70 years, as with any other organisa�on, it has its ups and downs. It does not set out to offer compe��ve badminton, though some of our players would do well in that league. Instead, it provides a friendly venue where playing the game and sharing views on local and more domes�c issues have equal prominence.

Membership has varied over the years but has always included people drawn from the current or a previous congrega�on. We have no upper age limit though we would be keen to see more people aged eighteen upwards to keep us on our toes. We meet on Monday nights from the end of September and through to Easter, when we give our racquets a rest and concentrate on our gardens.

Does Your Pet Have Joint Problems?

Joint pain can cause severe mobility problems that take away your pet’s joy for life, but it’s not just older animals that suffer in this way.

Genetic issues such as hip or elbow dysplasia in dogs, or an old injury, increase the risk of them suffering from arthritis.

What to look out for It’s fairly easy to spot the signs of arthritis in dogs, simply because they are in your company more than a rabbit or a cat, for example. These are some of the indicators to watch out for: • Stiffness when your dog gets up, or after a walk.

• They walk with a limp, even if only for a few minutes.

• Your cat’s reluctance to jump

• Your rabbit being less inclined to run around its cage.

It can be particularly difficult to notice the signs of arthritis in a rabbit, as one of the ways they survive in the wild is to move less when they’re injured, so as not to appear vulnerable.

Is there anything you can do to prevent joint problems in your pet?

As far as puppies are concerned, it’s important not to over-exercise them while their bodies are still developing. Being overweight will also have a huge impact on your pet’s joints, so watching food intake is a key factor.

The vet may prescribe an anti-inflammatory if your pet has severe joint pain, or glucosamine and chondroitin, as these are supplements known to help with mobility.

Eating Disorders Awareness Week - 27th February to 5th March

Eating disorders affect over 725,000 people in the UK and one in five of those most seriously affected die prematurely through suicide or physical consequences. That’s why it’s essential we’re all aware of the dangers of eating disorders and our susceptibility to them.

Forget the stereotypical teenage girl starving herself.

There are several different eating disorders that can affect people of any age, gender or ethnicity.

WHAT CAUSES EATING DISORDERS? Often, it’s a combination of genetic, psychological, environmental, social and biological factors. Risk factors are: • Bereavement or abuse.

• Being criticised about weight, body shape or eating habits.

• Intense stress.

• Family history of addiction, depression or eating disorders.

• Pressure to be slim from themselves, society or a career/ hobby, e.g. dancing, sports.

• Underlying issues such as anxiety, low self-esteem, perfectionism or obsessive personality.

• Relationship issues.

TYPES OF EATING DISORDER Anorexia Nervosa Around 1 in 250 women and 1 in 2,000 men will experience

anorexia, becoming preoccupied with weighing as little as possible via excessive exercise and/or starving themselves. It usually develops at age 16 or 17 but sometimes, as young as 7.

Bulimia Bulimia sufferers alternate between binge eating and purging by inducing vomiting or using laxatives, and 90% are female. It’s more common than anorexia and usually develops at around 18 or 19.

Binge eating disorder (BED) BED affects around 5% of adults, compelling them to eat large amounts of food very rapidly.

It affects both sexes equally, usually developing between 30 and 40 years old.

Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS) Some people may have some but not all of the symptoms of a specific eating disorder, so they receive an EDNOS diagnosis.

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT Doctors and healthcare professionals use internationally agreed criteria to diagnose eating disorders, normally using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) or International Classification of Diseases (ICD). They ask patients about their weight, selfimage and relationship with food.

But how do you know someone needs to be referred for diagnosis?

Often, people with eating disorders will be in denial or try to hide symptoms, but they may: • Skip meals or claim they’ve already eaten/will eat when they’re out.

• Only eat tiny/low-calorie meals.

• Claim they’re fat when they’re a healthy weight/underweight.

• Repeatedly weigh themselves/ study themselves in the mirror.

• Cook large family meals yet eat little themselves.

• Refuse to eat in public or become stressed when they do.

• Use ‘pro-anorexia’ websites.

If you suspect you or someone else has an eating disorder, get professional help immediately.

Rapid treatment makes full recovery more likely and minimises the impact on the patient’s body and life. However, recovery can be lengthy and, like the disorders themselves, complex.

Physical health is monitored while the disorder’s underlying causes are treated. This may involve: • Self-help books.

• Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), aiming to change thinking and in turn, behaviour.

• Interpersonal psychotherapy: a talking therapy focusing on relationship issues.

• Dietary counselling.

• Psychodynamic therapy or cognitive analytic therapy (CAT), focusing on how personality and life experiences influence thoughts and behaviour.

• Family therapy, considering the eating disorder’s effects on them and their family.

• Medication: often SSRI antidepressants (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors).

Recipes/Food Notes Caramelised

Onion & Goats’ Cheese Pizza Serves 4

Ready in 1 hour

This is a tasty alternative to the classic cheese and tomato pizza. Serve with a simple mixed green salad dressed with balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

Ingredients: • 3 tbsp olive oil, plus extra to drizzle • 2 large onions, peeled and thinly sliced • 2 tsp brown sugar • 2 x 145g packets pizza base mix

• 2 tsp fresh chopped rosemary leaves, plus 1 tbsp small sprigs • 2 x 100g round goats’ cheeses, sliced

• 5 cherry tomatoes, halved

TIP

Instead of the caramelised onions spread, the pizza base with sun-dried tomato paste then top with some cooked and drained spinach. Scatter over diced mozzarella cheese, grated parmesan cheese and some fresh chopped oregano.

Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and add the onions. Fry over a gentle heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened.

Add the sugar and fry for a further 10 minutes until golden brown. Leave to cool.

Preheat the oven to 220C, Fan 200C, Gas Mark 7. Empty both sachets of the pizza base mix into a large bowl and stir in a large pinch of salt and the chopped rosemary leaves. Stir in 200ml hand-hot water and mix to a soft dough. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Roll the dough out to a 30 x 45cm oblong.

Place on a greased baking sheet and turn up the edges of the base. Spread the caramelised onions over the base, then top with the sliced goats’ cheese, cherry tomatoes and rosemary sprigs. Leave in a warm place for 10 minutes.

Drizzle with olive oil and season with a little salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper.

Bake for 15-20 minutes until the base is golden brown.

Brodie's Year with the Project Trust Local student, heading towards her her GAP Year, has been selected by the Project Trust to work in a Children's Home In Swaziland South Africa.

At the moment I am in my last year at Firrhill high School but in August when all my friends leave for University, I will be to travelling to Swaziland, which is located in the south of Africa, to work in a children’s home for a year.

I am delighted to say that I have been selected by the charity Project Trust, who send 17 to 19 year olds on a gap year to learn about the developing world and to immerse themselves in a new and different culture from their own.

It will be an amazing opportunity and I am so excited at the idea of living and working with the kids, in their community. I am looking forward to creating new friendships and hope to be a positive impact on the children’s lives plus see a part of the world that I have never seen or experienced before.

To allow me to take part in this experience I need to make my contribution of £6200 to fund my accommodation, food, insurance, flights, a 4-day training course before my departure as well as support overseas from Project Trust. I have already completed the Smarties Tube Challenge with my local brownie pack along with friends and family and also a Body Shop

evening in November. I am also keeping busy with odd jobs such as ironing, dog walking and babysitting for the neighbours.

I will also be running a Ceilidh on February 18th at Colinton Bowling club. Please contact myself or my mum (Anne Saunderson) for more details.
