Members of The Indian National Association of Street Vendors shout anti-government slogans during a protest against Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail in New Delhi. New Delhi, Dec 7 (IANS) The deadlock in parliament over the government's decision to allow foreign investment in the retail sector ended today after an all-party meeting passed a resolution to suspend the move till consensus is reached. Ahead of the meeting, opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) continued to insist on a rollback of the FDI decision. Janata Dal-United leader Sharad Yadav said he was talking to various political parties in an effort to create consensus on smooth running of parliament after the all-party meeting. The government had over the past three days reached out to its key ally Trinamool Congress and the opposition to signal its willingness to "pause" the FDI decision. Finance Minister Pranab Mukher-

The BJP Tuesday sharpened its attack on the government with its leader Arun Jaitley questioning "silence" of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and party general secretary Rahul Gandhi on the FDI issue. Nearly half of the winter session of parliament has been lost due to protests and slogan-shouting by opposition members over various issues, mainly FDI in retail. The government decided Nov 25 to allow 51 percent foreign ownership of multibrand retail stores and 100 percent FDI in single brand outlets.

No delay on Single smart card for different Lokpal bill: modes of transport launched Singhvi New Delhi, Dec 6 (IANS) There would be no delay, except for a "couple of days" of procedural extension, in submitting the anti-graft Lokpal bill in parliament, according to Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who heads the parliamentary panel studying the draft legislation. "This is nothing but a short procedural extension. We have a formal adoption meeting Dec 7," Singhvi, also a senior Congress leader, told reporters here Tuesday. He added that the report could be tabled in parliament after a "couple of days" of extension. He refused to give a definite date when the report would be tabled but said the extension was for translation, printing and binding of the draft report. He said the original date for submitting the report was Dec 7 and a two-day procedural extension could not be called a delay. "I want to also remind you that if and when this report is given in the near future, it would have been done in less than two and a half months. I would like you to tell me which issue as vast and complicated as this has resulted in a parliamentary committee report in less than two and a half months," he said. Singhvi's comments come in the wake of social activist Anna Hazare's threats to hold a daylong protest Dec 11 to press his demand for a strong Lokpal bill and an extended agitation Dec 27-Jan 5, 2012 if the legislation was not passed in the winter session ending Dec 22.

New Delhi, Dec 6 (IANS) The national Common Mobility Card that will soon allow seamless and convenient public travel across different modes of transport, including trains and buses, was launched here Tuesday. The rechargeable pre-paid card, named More, works on the same principle as the Delhi Metro card and was launched by Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath at the Urban Mobility India (UMI) conference-cum-exhibition here. According to the ministry, More

can be used on various modes of transportation like metro, bus, train, taxi and ferry. It can also be used to pay toll across the country. "The challenges of resource crunch and service delivery have to be met, to provide better transportation methods for the growing urban population. Development has to precede growth," Kamal Nath said. The implementation will be partly funded by central government under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) scheme.

Anti-Kudankulam relay fast continues for 50th day

Chennai, Dec 6 (IANS) The relay fast against Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) set up in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu continued for the 50th day Tuesday, with former naval chief L. Ramdas present at the venue, an activist said. In their third phase of the struggle against the KNPP, villagers in Tirunelveli and other neighbouring districts are participating in the relay fast being held at Idinthakarai village near Kudankulam, around 650 km from here. "Today (Tuesday) is the 50th day of the relay fast protest at Idinthakarai. Former Indian Navy chief Ramdas and his wife are present at the venue. The relay fast protest began Oct 18," M. Pushparayan,

convener of the Coastal People's Federation and a leader of People's Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE), told IANS. India's nuclear power plant operator Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) is building two 1,000 MW atomic power reactors at Kudankulam. Villagers fear for their lives and safety in case of any nuclear accident and the long-term impact the nuclear plant would have on the population. Their agitation from Aug 16 has put a stop to the project work, thereby delaying the commissioning of the first unit by several months and increasing the project cost from the budgeted Rs.13,171 crore.

Muslims mark Muharram with mourning, processions

New Delhi, Dec 6 (IANS) Amid cries of “Ya Hussain”, thousands of Muslims in India flagellated themselves in large processions on Tuesday to mourn Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Mohammed, who was martyred some 1,330 years ago at Karbala in Iraq on the 10th day of the first Islamic month of Muharram. In Delhi, thousands of Muslims took out processions at many places to observe the day, also known as Yaume-Ashura, the day of enlightenment, which is an important date in the Islamic calendar. Muslims believe that many key events in Islamic history occurred on the day, including the events of Karbala. Holding flags and dressed in black, men and women, mostly belonging to the Shia sect, who along with Sunnis make up India’s 140 million Muslims took out processions, crying and beating their chests in the ceremonial “maatam” or mourning. Barefoot men with blades and other sharp-edged weapons cut and flagellated themselves and recited elegies in the memory of Hussain. Delhi Police had put in place security measures to ensure that the day passes off peacefully as it also coincided with the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition anniversary. “We had taken enough security measures for the processions in Delhi,

Chandni Chowk to get a facelift

New Delhi, Dec 5 (IANS) Delhi’s walled city will soon be getting a facelift, focusing not only on beautification but also on conserving the cultural heritage. Two projects; tucking the dangerously dangling electric wires underground and addressing the traffic congestion will be undertaken in the first phase in Chandni Chowk by the Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation (SRDC). “There will be no dearth of funds for this purpose and the work relating to laying underground the hanging cables will be completed in next few months,” said Delhi Urban Development Minister A.K. Walia. According to SRDC, the first project will effectively take care of the dangling wires which, apart from being an eyesore, can result in a major accident as a small spark may lead to a blaze in the congested neighborhood. The second project aims at taking remedial measure to decongest the current mixed traffic in a way that is economically feasible as well as technologically viable. Some of the major roads which will be covered under the first phase are: the main road from the Red Fort to Lahore Gate, Church Mission Road, Esplanade Road, H.C.Sen Road, Naya Bazar, Khari Bowli, Nai Sarak and Dariba.

Draft mining policy to help in faster clearances

Hyderabad, Dec 6 (IANS): India's new draft mining policy is ready to ensure that the local communities are also benefited from the activity, a top official said Tuesday. G. Srinivas, joint secretary in the union mines ministry, said the new policy would also help in getting faster clearances for mining. Addressing the sixth International Conference on Aluminium (INCAL), which began here Tuesday, he underlined the need for making available bauxite and coal blocks for aluminium projects to boost the production. Srinivas called upon states to take advantage of the draft policy and speed up the clearances for the

mining. Voicing his concern over several projects that have remained stuck for environmental clearances; he said this may hamper achieving the expected aluminium production level of 4.7 million tonnes per year in the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17). The current production of aluminium in the country is 3.6 million tonnes per annum.

Manila, Dec 6 (IANS): Economic growth in emerging East Asia will continue to moderate in 2012 as growing sovereign debt problems in Europe and an anemic US economy raise the specter of a deep global economic downturn, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) said Tuesday. In the event that both the Eurozone and the US economies contract sharply, the impact on emerging East Asia would be serious but manageable, the ADB's latest Asia Economic Monitor said. "The turmoil emanating from Europe poses a growing danger to trade and finance within emerging East Asia; so the region's policymakers must

be prepared to act promptly, decisively and collectively to counter what could be an extended global economic slowdown," said Iwan J. Azis, head of ADB's Office of Regional Economic Integration, which produced the report. ADB cut its forecast for the region's growth in 2012 to 7.2 percent from the 7.5 percent forecast in the September Asian Development Outlook 2011 Update. Growth is still forecast at 7.5 percent for this year. In a special section -- Can East Asia Weather Another Global Economic Crisis -- the report describes the events that could lead to a recession in the Eurozone and

a new economic downturn in the US, Xinhua reported. It examines how a new global economic crisis would affect the region under differing scenarios. In the worst case scenario -- with the Eurozone and US contracting as much as they did in 2009 -- emerging East Asia would grow by 5.4 percent in 2012. That would be 1.8 percentage points below the current forecast but not as severe as the impact of the 2008-09 global crisis. This is due in part to diversification of the region's export markets and increased domestic demand as a source of growth. Nonetheless, the region's financial systems remained just as vulnerable as they were in 2008.

The Indian cricket team celebrates after winning the World Cup

But the key question is, is cricket responsible for this? The arguments are endless both in favor and against this argument. The supporters will say that all games have their separate, non-intersection identities, interests, fan-following and popularity scales, so how come we attribute other sport’s losses on cricket’s gains. The critics will respond by equally strong arguments-if all the financial aids, funds, sponsors will be consumed by the ‘cricket’ giant, wont the other games be starved of existence? The conclusion is not easy to draw and one possible solution is to focus on aggressive advertisement of other sports, by roping in the government

aids, big corporate sponsors, the media and broadcasting people, the game’s iconic players as ambassadors etc… Maybe someday we can produce

Quick Facts why FDI is not a Curse for the Country! 1

3

We all know that food never reaches us consumers directly from the farmers. there is a complex labyrinth of dalals-stockiestdealers-wholesalers-retailers and the added costs in each step. What the farmers receive, we pay an exorbitant amount of that price. These companies would directly buy from the farmers, thereby cutting costs. Moreover there have been cases of these middle-men hoarding up goods so that prices will rise (I myself have seen one such case). With FDI this will be eradicated.

A huge employment arena will be generated in terms of logistics and storage. The dynasty of ‘family business’ will be a passé.

FDI in retail will only be allowed in cities with >1 million population, so the village folk needn’t worry. Moreover the govt. has put stringent monitoring clauses in the agreement that will discourage them from any malpractices.

whenever the little master, Sachin crosses yet another milestone. But these cricket-savvy arguments rarely bring to light the other dark picture. While cricket’s popularity has increased in India at an exponential rate, the fortunes of the other games has fallen to new lows. Hockey – our national game, in which India was considered a superpower has degraded so quickly that team India had failed to even qualify for the Olympics-the international sporting event in which India won medals in its golden era of hockey. It’s a pity that many international games like Motor-racing, Formula 1 races, golf, tennis, Athletics, gymnastics, swimming etc. don’t even find an Indian representation.

‘Cricket is a religion in India’- a powerful statement that would bring a smile on all cricket lovers in India. However, rarely expressed is the other side of the coin – an issue of one man’s extreme popularity killing the very identity and existence of all other players in the mix. No Doubt that the game’s popularity has brought glory to millions of fans residing in India and worldwide, has instilled a sense of pride even in non-cricket-following Indian audience. Whenever the country has won, it has brought laurels to the nation, elation to Indian people from all age groups- be it a tiny toddler who craves for sixes from Sachin and Sehwag’s bat and or the keen cricket follower who deeply understands the nuisances of the game and gets elated

Now whenever there is an acute shortage in essentials, many do not know where the fault lies. The production is okay, so why the shortage? In this complex system, it’s difficult to pin-point the wrongdoer. With a single corporate entity, the entire process will be transparent. When there is a shortage, we’ll be able to exactly determine where it has originated.

A balance, possibly an agreement, needs to be reached between you and a certain person now. It really is as cut and dried as that. You’ve tiptoed around someone, choosing your words carefully, trying not to sound accusatory and someone simply isn’t getting the message. You want reassurance that help or support they pledged some time ago that hasn’t been forthcoming is coming, that’s all. The discussion might be tense but it will be productive.

The main reason behind our belief that we are incapable of doing something often stems from a negative comment made to us, usually when we were children and our willingness to believe that what was said to us was true. Sometimes though, all it takes is for someone to say something that confirms what we believe ourselves. Don’t take someone’s comments to heart now. Someone would like to know their comments have upset you. Don’t give them that pleasure.

Water has the ability to extinguish fire. Fire, on the other hand, if strong enough, can dominate water. A splash of water on a raging inferno will do nothing to extinguish it. For one to conquer the other, a clear advantage within a balance of power is needed. You appear to be in a somewhat similar situation through having to maintain control of something that could gain the upper hand if allowed to do so. Soon, a balance of power will be entirely in your favor.

What if surgeons decided they didn’t feel like performing life-saving surgery on a particular day? What if airline pilots decided they had something better to do than fly hundreds of fare-paying passengers to holiday destinations? We all have to work hard to summon energy and enthusiasm sometimes but can overlook how, if we didn’t do something, others may be affected. Before you decide not to bother doing something, consider the implications to others.

Despite technological advancements, lighthouses remain in use. These life-saving beacons continue to illuminate shorelines around the globe, warning vessels of potential danger. A way forward is being highlighted to you now, albeit in a subtle way. Don’t look for grand gestures or glaringly obvious signs or clues. A faint glimmer of hope is all you need to feel infinitely more positive about something than you have of late.

Some bicycle repair kits are amazing. These compact kits designed to fit snugly beneath the narrowest of seats can contain almost as many tools as a mechanic’s toolbox. Repairs on bikes are intended to be temporary though; just enough for a cyclist to get home and sorted properly later. You can now mend something that doesn’t need to be fixed permanently. Through applying a bit of imagination, you can offer a solution that will make a difference initially.

Don’t be so selfish!

If you keep looking for bigger signs you’ll be waiting for a while!

Most of us possess enough intelligence to know that, if something appears too good to be true, then it usually is. Our instincts tend to be accurate when we find ourselves feeling doubtful about an opportunity that doesn’t ‘add up’ in the right way. You have reason to be wary about something proposed to you now. You are right to reserve judgment until more facts are available. If an offer is genuine, then someone will be prepared to wait.

Subservient. Beholden. Obliged. These are a few words that seem to describe your relationship with a certain person. You appear concerned about how you appear in their eyes. Their opinion of you matters greatly. You would be prepared to go to great lengths to ensure they were happy. What about your own feelings of self-worth? What are the benefits to you of doing something to make them happy? Prepare to explore such questions in depth, very soon.

There are two sides to every story and it might be time for you to reassess your standing or viewpoint where one particular saga is concerned. For some time, you’ve maintained an unyielding stance and been rigid about your opinion surrounding a dramatic event in the past. You appear willing now to accept that there is more to a certain situation and could even be willing to extend a proverbial olive branch. At long last, you and someone else can make progress.

Keep a firm head on your shoulders!

Long ago, kings and queens had people called ‘court jesters’ entertain them. It was always in the best interests of jesters to ensure their royal audience laughed or jesters would meet with an unfortunate end. What if a king or queen didn’t understand a joke at first, had the jester executed but ‘got’ the joke afterwards? Before you dismiss or eject someone from your world, consider that you might be misinterpreting or overlooking an essential fact that will make you regret doing so!

A ‘shooting star’ is a meteoroid that burns up as it passes through Earth’s atmosphere. A shooting star isn’t really a star at all. Oops. Maybe I should have been more sensitive toward those who believe in shooting stars or your willingness to believe in anything that will bring a desired result now. You don’t need meteoroids, four leafed clovers or horseshoes. All you need is faith in a plan, pure and simple. If you have that, the rest will fall into place soon enough.

At seaside funfairs, donkeys take children for rides in blazing sun. They walk slowly and tired in a circle, carrying fare paying customers of their cruel and materialistic owners on their backs. Although you’re unlikely to be experiencing similar exploitation, you could be weary with being beholden to a certain person who believes they have some level of control over you. Money forms part of this belief. You have a chance to break free now if you truly want to.

1.The Burn Journals by Brent Runyon (A True Story)

Brent Runyon set himself on fire in an attempt to kill himself when he was 14 years old. The first few chapters focus on his suicide attempt and the rest outline the paralyzing regret that he goes through and his recovery at a children’s hospital. It reads like a diary and helps the reader understand Brent’s mind and his reasons for doing what he did. It’s intense, yes and even though it’s 325 pages long, you won’t be able to put it down- it surely is that gripping.

Wednesday, 7th December, 2011

Out on a road trip? Can’t fall asleep at night? To combat these or any other reasons that are making time go by slow, we recommend these single-sitting books that will come to your rescue! Keep in mind that they’re not light reads, but simply fast-paced and gripping novels that you won’t be able to put down.

Quotable Quote I don’t want to get out of bed. I’m so stupid. I’m going to be in so much trouble. What am I going to do? I’m completely screwed. -Brent

3.Push by Sapphire Quotable Quote I’m gonna break through or somebody gonna break through to me - I’m gonna learn, catch up, be normal, change my seat to the front of the class. -Precious Jones Another excellent book that reads like a diary! Push is about Precious Jones, an obese 16 year old girl who gets expelled from school after her father impregnates her for the second time. She then becomes a part of a learning program that encourages her to keep a diary, so as to keep a track of her thoughts. It’s a powerful book that creates empathy with the character and make the reader admire the sincerity with which she talks about her life.

4.The Sorrows of Young Werther by Johann Von Goethe Quotable Quote

Every day I succumb to the temptation and make a sacred promise to myself: Tomorrow you’ll stay away for once. But when morning comes I again find an irresistible reason, and before I know it I’m with her. -Werther This book is definitely not for the faint hearted. The story unfolds in the form of letters that are sent back and forth between Werther (a moody and overly emotional man) and his friend. Werther falls in love with a woman (Charlotte) who is engaged to be married to somebody else. The young man can’t handle his heartbreak and when Charlotte’s husband confronts him, he has no choice but to stop speaking to her. Does he kill himself? Does he manage to move on? Read it and find out! -Aanchal Ghai (aanchalghai@delhionthego.com)

2.Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen (A True Story) Quotable Quote I think many people kill themselves simply to stop the debate about whether they will or they won’t. -Susanna

You may or may not have seen the movie, but it has to be said that this book deserves every bit of accolades that it has earned. “Girl, Interrupted” focuses on Susanna Kaysen, an 18 year old who is diagnosed with Borderline Personality disorder. She admits herself to McLean Hospital and the psychiatrist further diagnoses her with depression. The people that she meets and the situations that she is faced with forms the foundation of the book.

T

he first thing that you notice when you walk into Moksha is the atmosphere which is inviting and comfortable without being sloppythanks to the huge candles scattered thorough the room. Another thing that stands out is that it’s primarily meant for small groups and because each table has white curtains on

either side, the setting instantly becomes more private. Bathed in shades of white and beige, the décor gets full marks but the music could definitely use a makeover. The menu offers a unique helping hand by suggesting the beverage that goes best with each dish under the Sea Food, Chicken, Mutton and Vegetarian categories of every course. The Fish Amritsari, for example, is best enjoyed with Malambo Chenin Chardonnay. We, however, chose the Indian Red Wine (Sula) which, we have to say, complemented each dish perfectly. The bar at Moksha will definitely not let you down and the urge to continue ordering will just keep pushing you. The selection of Non Alcoholic Beverages is quite impressive as well- we recommend the Virgin Mojita and the Sweet 16 Margarita. Speaking of the menu, eating at Moksha can be a delight for all you veggies out there because of the number of green entrées that it offers. It includes innovative and palette-

tickling options like Kamal Kakdi Kababs (delicately spiced lotus stem kababs); Tandoori Mushroom & Pineapple cubes and Arbi Kababs that are mildly spiced and deep fried. However, to satisfy your taste buds with the starters, the Dahi Kabab or the Hara Bhara Kabab (the perfect blend of spinach and potatoes) are a must try. The staff is polite and well versed with what the restaurant has to offer. Another USP of the starters is that they all come with two thin pieces of bread that they go best with. The Sharaab-e-Kabab (time for chicken lovers to read), for example, comes with slivers of Missi Roti- which is a sweet paratha that tastes a lot like the Pakistani Bakarkhani. For the main course, we tried the Chicken Dum Biryani and the Mutton Dum Biryani accompanied with mix raita which was delicious without being doused in oil or ghee. If you can’t do without the staple Kali Dal, the Dal-e-moksha should make you happy! The menu also dedicates a

page to Value Deals, out of which the Moksha Grande stands out because of the enormous portions that it offers and the fact that it’s priced at Rs. 645 doesn’t hurt either! Ah, the deserts section! Who can resist? Even if you are stuffed to the gills, you can’t walk out without eating the desert can you? We tried Choori with Ice Cream (shred-

ded sweet parantha) and the Shahi Pakodi (baby gulab jamuns bathed in Rabri) both of which are moksha classics, and yum is the least we could say.

We give Moksha 4.5/5 stars, primarily for the rich food that it has to offer without being heavy on the pocket.

Fruit Acids for radiant skin

If you would like to contribute with articles/ pictures, Email features@DelhiOnTheGo.com

It has been found that the use of fruit acids can result in significant improvement in the appearance of your skin. The five main fruit acids are: citric, glycolic, lactic, malic, and tartaric. Citric acid is derived from citrus fruits, glycolic from sugar cane, malic from apples, and tartaric from grapes. While lactic acid is milk-derived (remember Cleopatra’s milk baths), it is still considered a fruit acid.

Benefits of fruit acids: Fruit acid is a mild chemical exfoliant that works by penetrating and breaking apart the uppermost layer of skin. This facilitates the removal of dead and damaged surface cells and exposes the newer, healthier layer of skin underneath. Fruit acids are an ideal exfoliant for most skin types, especially beneficial for combination and oily skin. They are not recommended for use on extremely sensitive skin, including those with rosacea, eczema, and other skin irritations or open sores Fruit Acids encourage cell turnover to help fade surface imperfections, fine lines and wrinkles associated with aging skin. They may also help maintain younger-looking skin by boosting the production of collagen and elastin.

Fruit-based skin care recipes Here are some fruit-based skin care recipes that one may use to gently exfoliate one’s skin, prevent dryness and keep the skin looking young, radiant and beautiful:

Limes

Oranges

Watermelons

Tomatoes

Lime juice is an important natural aid for healthy skin. Mix lime juice with boiled organic milk and a teaspoon of glycerin. Apply to the skin at night and allow to dry overnight. If skin is very greasy, you can mix lime juice with cucumber juice and apply liberally to the face and neck. Allow the mixture to dry for fifteen minutes and rinse with warm water.

Several parts of the orange can be used to help improve the complexion and reduce blemishes. Freshly squeezed orange juice can be applied directly to the skin and rinsed off with warm water to freshen the face.

Watermelon juice can be used to remove blemishes on the skin. You can prepare a lotion by grating and squeezing the juice of a small slice of watermelon. Rinse the lotion from the face after fifteen minutes.

The pulp of a tomato is very good for improving the condition of the skin. Apply tomato pulp to the face and allow it to dry for one hour. Wash off with warm water. Repeat this daily.

Pineapple and Papaya peel Ingredients required for this peel:

1 cup fresh pineapple; half-a-cup fresh papaya; 2 tablespoons honey

How to prepare:

Puree pineapple and papaya in a blender or otherwise. Add honey and mix thoroughly.

How to use:

Wash your face, then apply the mixture to your skin, avoiding the eye area. Leave on for no more than 5 minutes (less if you have sensitive skin), then rinse with cool water. When done, apply a moisturizer. Don't use more than once a week. Note: when using this peel for the first time, keep for only 1-2 minutes to make sure there is no skin irritation. Pineapple contains bromelain and papaya contains papain. When applied to the skin in small amounts (i.e. the amounts naturally found in pineapple and papaya), these enzymes help gently remove dead cells from skin surface producing mild peeling effect.

SAFF Cup: India need draw against Sri Lanka for semi-final berth

Sports

competition. The team comprises Tarachand of Madhya Pradesh in 49-kg category, Dheeraj of Army in 52-kg category, Ajay Kumar of Haryana in 56-kg category, Rohit Tokas of Delhi in 60-kg category, Deepak Tanwar of Madhya Pradesh in 64-kg category, Gurlen of Punjab in 69-kg category and Surendra of Haryana in 75-kg category.

New Delhi, Dec 6 (IANS) India cannot afford to be complacent as they face Sri Lanka in their last Group A match of the SAFF Cup football tournament at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium today in their bid to book a semi-final berth. Both India and Afghanistan have four points each from two matches but the hosts are on top in Group A because of a better goal difference. A draw with Sri Lanka would be enough for 162nd ranked India to book a berth in the last four. A loss, however, would shatter India's hopes of defending their title. Five-time champions India started their title defence with a 1-1 draw against lower-ranked Afghanistan but came back strongly with a 5-0 thrashing against Bhutan, the lowest ranked team in the tournament.

Formidables keep lead in bridge nationals Chennai, Dec 6 (IANS) Formidables from Delhi, the favourites, remained at the top with 45 Victory Points (VPs) at the end of the second round of the pre-quarterfinal stage for the Ruia Gold Cup team event of the 53rd Krishnapatnam Port Winter National Bridge Championship on Tuesday. Close on the heels of Formidables are local Nest Inn, Malani from Andhra

Pradesh, Manyavar from Maharashtra and Maya Mira from Delhi with 43.26, 42.96, 42.78 and 41.43 VPs, respectively. In Ruia Silver Trophy for the lesser rated players, T Bose's IV from Bengal are leading the field at the end of the third round with 78.84 VPs followed by Chowdhury Combines from Rajasthan (70.37) and local Ramaratnamn (69.58).

New Delhi, Dec 6 (IANS) The Delhi franchise of the i1 Super Series racing league has been named Delhi Gypsies and Billionaires. Management expert Arindham Chaudhuri, the owner of the Delhi team, on Tuesday said the name Delhi Gypsies and Billionaires represents the pulse of the city. "Motorsports is as much a sport for the gypsies at heart as for the billionaires by style! The name is as much a tribute to Delhi, the city which is often referred to as Dilwalon ki Dilli, as to the city which boasts of the highest number of billionaires and is undoubtedly the style capital of India!," said Chaudhuri. So far, the owners of five out of nine franchises have been made public. Besides Delhi, there is Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore and Mumbai, which was bought by Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan. Teams from Kolkata, Pune, Ahmedabad and Chandigarh will also compete in the city-based event, starting with the first round in Abu Dhabi Jan 7.

JOHANNES EISELE / AFP

Delhi i1 Series franchise named after Gypsies and Billionaires

Each team will have an established foreign and Indian driver in its line-up while the third driver will be picked from the pool of talented young Indian drivers. Radical S3 Sportscar having a maximum speed of 250 kmph will be used in the single-make series, which will have 12 races in a season.

India coach Savio Medeira admitted that the win against Bhutan has given the team the much needed confidence, but asked his boys not to take any chances against the 1995 champions. "The first game is always tough for any team. But we have prepared well for this match like we did against Bhutan. We can't take any chances," said the India coach. Medeira is likely to retain the same side that won against Bhutan and a call on winger Steven Dias would be taken only on the morrow. Dias was rested against Bhutan as the coach wanted to preserve him for the later stages of the tournament. "We will decide on Dias on the morning of the match," the coach said.

Ranji Trophy: Delhi fightback against MP

Zaheer Khan

New Delhi, Dec 6 (IANS) Railways' Nitin Bille, Saurashtra's Chirag Pathak, Punjab's Ravi Inder Singh and Karan Goel struck hundreds on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy Elite Division matches on Tuesday. Punjab made a promising start against 2010 champions Rajasthan in a fifth round match, scoring 283 for 3 by stumps at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. Inder Singh's 133 and Goel's unbeaten 116 laid a strong foundation for a big score in the first innings. Pathak's fluent 116 helped Saurashtra end the day at 244 for 2 against Mumbai. Pathak

was involved in a 218-run stand with Bhushan Chauhan, who remained not out on 87. Once again all eyes were on Zaheer Khan at the Khandheri Cricket Stadium in Rajkot. India's premier fast bowler, who is aiming to be match fit for Australia tour, bowled 13 overs and picked up a wicket for Mumbai. Delhi, who thrashed Baroda by 10 wickets at home last week, fought back against Madhya Pradesh after an ordinary batting effort at Emerald High School Ground in Indore. Ashish Nehra and Pradeep Sangwan shared two wickets each as Delhi reduced the hosts to 86 for six at stumps.

London, Dec 6 (IANS) World No.1 Novak Djokovic believes it was not improvements to his game but his mentality that helped him win three grand slam titles in 2011. Reflecting on a hugely successful season, Djokovic believes it was his new-found maturity which made the difference. "It's true that I have improved but by a very small percentage," Djokovic was quoted as saying in ESPN. "It's the same game I've had the last couple of years. It's my mental approach on the court that's changed." After a brief break, Djokovic will return to action next month, when one of his first tasks will be to defend his Australian Open title - the first of 10 title defences in 2012. But Djokovic already has his sights on another prestigious title on the Wimbledon courts in 2012. "I'm only 24, and I want to have

World No.1 Novak Djokovic many more successful years, win as many major titles as possible," Djokovic said. "The Olympics are coming up. I want a medal."

Irfan Pathan keen to make return to national squad count

Baroda, Dec 6 (IANS) Irfan Pathan, making a comeback into the Indian team after two years, is eager to cash in on the opportunity given by the national selectors. Pathan was on Monday named in the India squad for the remaining two One-Day Internationals against the West Indies on the back of having had a successful season so far in the ongoing Ranji Trophy where he is the leading wicket-taker with a tally of 21 in four matches. The Baroda all-rounder last played for India during the World Twenty20 in England in 2009. "I am really happy to get back into the team. It is a great feeling. It has been a long wait for two years and god has fulfilled my dreams. Nothing comes better than playing for your country. If given the opportunity to play, I will try to do my best," Pathan told reporters. Pathan remembered the tough times in his career and said it made his return all the more worthwhile. "The dream to play for the country has always been there. When it is fulfilled, you feel nothing gets better than this. Having all the luxuries in life - having a big car, big house - nothing comes close to this," said Pathan. He was also in the running for Praveen Kumar's replacement in the Test squad for Australia but lost out to Abhimanyu Mithun. He would be looking forward to impress the selectors and get a berth in the ODI squad for the tri-nation series in Australia.

Samantha Stosur awarded Newcombe medal

US Open champion Samantha Stosur

Melbourne, Dec 6 (IANS) US Open champion Samantha Stosur collected her second Newcombe Medal to top off this year's stellar tennis season. The 27-year-old was crowned the inaugural winner last year after reaching the French Open final, breaking a drought for Australian women in making a grand slam decider. The Queenslander was a hot favourite to win the award. Wimbledon quarter-finalist Bernard Tomic, Shanghai Masters quarter-finalist Matthew Ebden and Jarmila Gajdosova, who achieved a career-high WTA ranking of 25, were also in the running for the award. The Newcombe Medal, presented for the season's outstanding achievement in tennis was held at the Palladium Ballroom at Crown Casino Monday night with greats of Australian tennis including Goolagong Cawley present. It had been 30 years since Wendy Turnbull lost to Hana Mandlikova in the 1980 Australian Open final and Evonne Goolagong Cawley beat Chris Evert at Wimbledon six months later. But this year Stosur went one better, winning the US Open in September on a historic day in New York to become the first Australian grand slam champion since Lleyton Hewitt's 2002 Wimbledon triumph and the first woman in 31 years.

Alex Fabregas (C) of Spain maneuvers past Liam De Young (L) and Jamie Dwyer (R) of Australia Auckland, Dec 6 (IANS) Australia thrashed Pakistan 6-1 with captain Jamie Dwyer scoring a hat-trick while hosts New Zealand drew 3-3 with the Netherlands after a sensational day of action at the Owen G. Glenn FIH Champions Trophy hockey. Spain, too, produced a stellar performance to defeat Great Britain 8-1 in their final Pool A encounter. It was a magnificent display from the Spanish, who came back from 0-1 down to score four times in either half to seal their place in championship pool along with New Zealand, Australia, and the Netherlands.

Australia continued their great form making it three wins in a row. Dwyer opened the scoring the 22nd minute when his speculative cross within the circle was inadvertently diverted into his own net by Pakistan keeper Salman Akbar. Their advantage was doubled four minutes from the end of the half when Eddie Ockenden lashed home a powerful reverse stick effort to provide some breathing space. New Zealand fought back to claim a memorable draw with The Netherlands, a result which put both teams through to Pool C, the Championship Pool.

Symonds to enter 'Bigg Boss 5' this week

Beaches, babes, bikinis.. here's India Resort Fashion Week tunities to designers. Mumbai-based designer James Ferreira will open the show while Bollywood favourite Manish Malhotra will bring the curtains down Dec 10. In fact, Pallav Ojha, director of UVAR Pvt Ltd, a retail firm which is also one of the main organisers of the event, felt the venue, the mood and the spirit of the fashion week goes hand-in-hand with the city of beaches. Hence the choice of the venue itself speaks a lot about the event. The enthusiasm amongst the participating designers is equally upbeat and positive. Delhi-based designer duo Shivan and Narresh, who specialise in resort wear, feel there is a long way to go to the next level, but are optimistic that with shows like this, resort wear in India will grow with leaps and bounds. Marriage talk hampers Geeta Basra's career! Mumbai, Dec 6 (IANS): Geeta Basra, who is said to be dating cricketer Harbhajan Singh, finds engagement-marriage rumors infuriating because these can harm her career, which is yet to take off. "He (Harbhajan) is a dear friend. Look, everyone in this industry has a personal life. I am not saying I am single or not single. Beyond that, whether we are getting married or not...I am not getting into all that. I am here to work really hard. And it hurts to hear my hard work being trivialised by such rumours," she said. "I've shot a terrific item song for 'Zilla Ghaziabad'. Rumours of an engagement or marriage at this juncture would definitely harm my career. There is no shaadi on the anvil. Such talk will take my career 10 steps backwards. I can't afford that. When producers hear such rumours, they will obviously say, 'Isski to shaadi hone wali hai.' I've been hearing such talk for three years. How come I'm not married yet?"
