The India Gate was built to commemorate the soldiers of the Indian Army who lost their lives during World War I and the Third Anglo-Afghan War. Originally known as the All India War Memorial, it was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, a renowned British architect, and was completed in 1931.
The structure itself is a massive triumphal arch, standing at a height of 42 meters (138 feet). It is made of red sandstone and features intricate carvings and inscriptions. At the top of the arch, there is a shallow domed bowl, which was intended to be filled with oil and used as a perpetual flame in honor of the soldiers.
