CENTRE FOR DELIBERATIVE DEMOCRACY AND GLOBAL GOVERNANCE

End of Year Report 2022

The Centre for Deliberative Democracy and Global Governance (CDDGG) is the world-leading centre for scholarly and applied research in deliberative governance. We advance a common research agenda that examines how deliberation can empower people to shape political decisions that affect their lives. We look at ways in which political deliberation and discourse can be reasonable, reflective, and inclusive of the public, and we share this through our research and teaching.

CDDGG is based in the Faculty of Business, Government and Law at the University of Canberra.

Democratising Sustainability Transformations

A panel of researchers and practitioners discussedthe prospects and pitfalls for democratising sustainability transformations in light of current developments in global politics. The webinar built on findings from a recent review of research on the nexus between democracy and sustainability published in the Earth System Governance journal.

Jonathan Pickering led the discussion followed by a critical commentary by Julia Tschersich (Utrecht University) and reflections from two practitioners: Melani Gunathilaka (Climate Action Now, Sri Lanka) and Rafael Jimenez Aybar (Westminster Foundation for Democracy). The panel was moderated by Wendy Conway-Lamb.

The Earth System Governance Project’s Working Group on Democracy co-hosted the webinar.

Democratic Play Workshop

Visiting scholar Matthias Poulsen hosted an imaginative junk playground session for Centre staff to explore the nature and future of democracy. Mathias’ research focuses on the intersections between play, design, democratic participation and deliberation. The workshop was an opportunity to think creatively about problem-solving and reaching consensus outside of our cultural and academic norms.

NSW Government

The project Building Democratic Resilience: Public Sphere Responses to Violent Extremism develops the concept of ‘democratic resilience,’ drawing on the theory of deliberative democracy and novel empirical research on countering violent extremism (CVE) in New South Wales. The report provides practical measures for government and other public sphere actors such legacy media to take to improve the resilience of the public sphere in the face of violent extremism. This research was the product of a 6-month project in partnership with academics from the University of New South Wales, funded the NSW Government, Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) Program 2022 ($50,000).

We are the institutional lead for research and evaluation of the world’s first global assembly on the climate and ecological crisis. Mohammad Abdul-Hwas, Wendy Conway-Lamb and Nicole Curato are part of this pioneering research team.

Watertrust Australia

CDDGG and Watertrust Australia are joining forces to co-design a research project informed by the analysis of water politics in Australia from a deliberative theory perspective. Centre co-founders John Dryzek and Simon Niemeyer are leading this project.

Global Assembly on the Climate and Ecological Crisis Democracy R&D

Our Centre is proud to be part of Democracy R&D – a global consortium of advocates, scholars, and practitioners of deliberative democracy. Democracy R&D convenes regional learning calls and an annual conference. Lucy J. Parry represented the Centre in this year’s DR&D conference.

The ABC

Jordan McSwiney was one of the panellists of this year’s Futurecast – a planning workshop that shapes the direction of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) for the next 10 years. Thematically, it was focused on declining trust and what public broadcasting needs to do to reengage audiences and rebuild trust.

Two talented students from the School of Politics, Economics and Society at the University of Canberra successfully completed their winter internship programme at the Centre.

Nitya Reddy examined international best practices in countering violent extremism. The intent of this research is to inform recommendations for government agencies and civil society organizations involved in countering violent extremism in Australia. Nitya was mentored by Jordan McSwiney and Selen A. Ercan.

Atosha Birongo examined the practices of voice and inclusion in the Global Assembly on the Climate and Ecological Crisis by interviewing assembly members and community hosts. These interviews contributed to the overall research outputs of the project. Atosha was mentored by Nicole Curato.
