The Sherwood Park & District Chamber of Commerce is where local businesses Meet, Learn, Speak, and Help each other’s businesses to grow through member benefits and advocacy to all levels of government.

Some of the Chamber’s many activities include: • Facilitating networking events that build relationships among Chamber members that lead to new business opportunities and increased sales.

• Learning opportunities regarding topics that are timely and relevant to business owners and key staff. These opportunities can be in the form of workshops or presentations at events.

• Speaking as a strong voice on business issues to advocate for change positively but forthrightly at the local, regional, provincial, and federal levels in concert with the Alberta Chambers of Commerce and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

• Affordable programs for Chamber members such as health care benefits, merchant services programs and commercial/home/auto insurance, courier, and fuel discounts.

Businesses and industry create wealth and jobs in our community and provide 66 per cent of the municipal tax revenue, which helps pay for services such as police and fire protection, parks and recreation, road repairs, and snow removal.

It is the investment from our membership, by way of annual membership dues and community events, which allows the Chamber to strengthen both in numbers and influence. The Chamber membership provides a tremendous number of volunteer hours throughout the year, dedicating both time and sponsorship to our numerous events. I thank every one of you for your continued support.

The 46th Annual Business Awards 2023 Recipients

Business of the Year Award The Business of the Year Award recognizes a Strathcona County business that demonstrates excellence in the areas they consider key to their success.

Business of the Year Recipient: Imperial Oil Ltd. Imperial Oil’s Strathcona refinery has operated in Strathcona County for 75 years, opening after the discovery of oil near Leduc in 1947. Strathcona refinery accounts for about 30% of western Canada’s refining capacity and manufactures a full range of gasoline, diesel, aviation fuels, liquid petroleum gases

and asphalt. The refinery processes approximately 200,000 barrels of crude oil per day, with ¾ of it being transportation fuel that equates to about 500,000 fillups/day. Community Attraction Award Recipient: MB Events MB Events is a sports event production company specializing in the planning, organization, and execution of sporting events. They offer a range of services to bring sports competitions and events to life, ensuring that everything runs smoothly and successfully. MB Events hosted L’Etape Canada by Tour De France in Strathcona County, attracting over 900 participants and 1500 spectators from both the local community and beyond. Welcome to Strathcona County!

Discover Strathcona County, our unique and thriving specialized municipality, located on the eastern boundary of the Edmonton Metro Region. We are home to the Industrial Heartland, the UNESCO-designated Beaver Hills Biosphere at Elk Island National Park, a diverse agricultural sector, and so much more.

With over 100,000 residents living across dynamic rural and urban communities, we are a county that strives to provide an exemplary level of quality services to our residents. Strathcona County is, and will continue to be, a truly desirable place to live, work, and do business.

Sherwood Park & District Chamber of Commerce produced nine provincial policies that were approved at the Alberta Chambers of Commerce Conference and AGM May 25 – 27 in Fort MacMurray. These policies are now in the applicable Ministers offices for consideration.

ENHANCING ALBERTA’S NATURAL GAS SYSTEM Serious challenges persist within Alberta’s natural gas system

which negatively impacts natural gas supply chain reliability, industry operations, and investor confidence. These challenges can and should be addressed to better manage the current system demand and industry operations and to further position Alberta as an industrial investment location of choice. With an abundance of natural resources, developing world-class infrastructure would provide investor confidence in the competitive advantage Alberta has for attracting new investment.

Given the essential role hydrogen has in achieving net-zero goals it will be essential to improve the natural gas system reliability to ensure enhanced reliability of the production of this vital clean fuel of the future and enable the hydrogen economy to develop in a safe, reliable, and sustainable manner.

Our Recommendations 1. S et quality standards for natural gas specifically at the delivery point and create provisions for losses related to the delivery of off-spec natural gas.

2. Ensure timely development of new, and expansion of existing, natural gas supply infrastructure to support growing natural gas demand, attract new projects, and secure further investment in Alberta.

3. Streamline regulation and approval process for critical infrastructure builds, such as pipelines.

Our Recommendations 1. Amend or remove the microgeneration Rule 024 to allow qualified technologies to generate electricity to meet the site peak load rather than the annual operating load so that the site is capable of full capacity islanded operation.

2. Designate the Utilities Consumer Advocate (UCA) to enforce competitive energy market regulations for the local distribution (below the substations) microgrid network which include Consumers, Prosumers, Retailers, Wire Service Provider (grid connection), and Active System Operator (microgrid connections).

3. Amend the Electric Utilities Act to recognize the Active System Operator (non-profit corporation or co-operative) that can monitor and coordinate growth of the microgrid virtual infrastructure with the Active System Operator (ASO) and Distribution Facility Owner (DFO).

INCLUDING HUMALITE IN CANADA’S AGRICULTURAL EMISSION REDUCTION SOLUTION Climate change is among the most pressing issues on the world’s agenda today. Climate change combines with geopolitical strife, global food security issues, and economic challenges to make a particularly challenging time in the world’s history. Major action is being taken on many fronts to address climate change, including food production; however, creative solutions are required to balance any net negative impacts on other areas, such as agriculture productivity which can contribute further to food security and economic success.

In Canada, the Federal Government has “committed to set a national fertilizer emission reduction target of 30% below 2020 levels by 2030.”

This ambitious target has been criticized as high nitrogen-based fertilizer is common in today’s farming methods to maximize crop yields.

Our Recommendations 1. Support and promote the research, production, domestic use, and export of environmentally friendly humalite products, including raw materials/products that are mined/manufactured in Alberta, for agricultural use.

2. Ensure that any fertilizer emission reduction plan includes a strategy to maintain and maximize crop yield, including the use of humalite.

RETURN TO A SINGLE RATE PERSONAL INCOME TAX REGIME In 1999, the Alberta provincial government proposed a net tax reduction of approximately $500 million, which represented about 10.9% of the forecast 1998-99 personal income tax revenue to be generated. The outcome of this proposal was the introduction of an 11% single rate tax to be levied on the taxable income of Albertans. These measures were intended by Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration (ATRA) to become effective in 2001 with an announcement of the changes in the 2000 February budget and were targeted to provide Albertans with a significant reduction in their overall combined federal-provincial personal income tax burden with almost all Albertans realizing some tax savings as a result.

Our Recommendations 1. Restore the single rate personal income tax regime at a rate equal to 8% of taxable income in excess of a basic personal exemption equal to $21,000.

2. Apply a 50% surtax for high and ultra-high net-worth taxpayers effective for taxable income in

excess of the prevailing top marginal bracket amount, which for 2023 is reflected at $235,675.

Economy Act, which had a stated objective of boosting investment in Alberta’s small and medium-sized businesses, drive innovation, diversify the economy and create new jobs outside of the traditionally dominant oil and gas industry and broader resource sector. The operation of the AITC program was relatively straightforward as it provided eligible individual and corporate investors in emerging corporations substantially engaged in “eligible business activities” (which includes research, development, and commercialization of proprietary technologies) with a 30% nonrefundable tax credit to be applied against Alberta income tax payable by the individual or corporation.

to 2020 levels”. Humalite should be supported as a soil and foliage enhancer, and it may be a perfect solution to reduce GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions while working to maximize crop yield.
