Whisky business

Anohka Distilleries puts Albertagrown whisky on world stage The name “Anohka”, derived from Sanskrit, means “weird but wonderful” — a fitting descriptor for a distillery that marries ancient techniques with cutting-edge technology.

In the heart of Parkland County, where golden fields of grain stretch toward the horizon, a small distillery has made a monumental mark on the global stage.

Anohka Distilleries, the brainchild of Gurpreet Ranu, claimed the title of World’s Best New Make & Young Spirit for its bold, heavily peated single-malt creation, This is Not Whisky, at the renowned 2024 World Whiskies Awards in London, England. For a distillery that opened its doors just over three years ago in December 2021, this achievement is nothing short of extraordinary—a testament to innovation, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to quality.

Ranu, a lawyer by trade and now owner of Anohka, didn’t set out to become a distiller. Instead, his journey began with a simple observation about the province he calls home.

“What inspired me to start everything was just looking at the amount of grain we grow here in Alberta and realizing we weren’t really valueadding to much of it at all,” says Ranu.

“There’s a huge missed opportunity.”

That realization sparked a vision: to transform Alberta’s abundant harvests into something exceptional—world-class whisky.

Before diving into distilling, Ranu built a career in law, a path that might seem distant from the tactile art of

Before diving into distilling, Ranu built a career in law, a path that might seem distant from the tactile art of spirit-making.

Now, while still serving as Anohka’s in-house counsel, he dedicates himself full-time to the distillery, channeling his energy into a deeply personal mission—one that’s seen him and his family stake their life savings on its success.

That road to success, however, was far from smooth. A defining challenge came with Anohka’s choice to heat its stills with fire, a throwback to whiskymaking methods largely abandoned by the 1920s. Most modern distilleries opt for steam, but Ranu was determined to revive this old-school approach. It meant creating custom equipment from scratch, a daunting task that involved adapting a flare stack burner—an oil and gas industry tool—into something fit for whisky.

Partnering with a local Alberta company, Ranu’s team spent 11 months and endured four redesigns to perfect it.

“There were times we weren’t sure it would work,” he reflects. “It was a nerve-wracking stretch of trial and

The World Whiskies Awards, a globally recognized competition, pits emerging distilleries against industry giants from Scotland, Ireland, Japan, and beyond. Ranu entered Anohka’s spirit after years of studying the awards’ winners and tasting their whiskys.

“Every time I’d try one, I wasn’t surprised they’d won—it was fantastic,” he says. “I wanted to see

how we’d rank against what I believe are truly some of the best whiskys in the world.”
