message Our favourite time of the year is here once again Not only are the days longer and the weather warmer, but for those working in the wine industry, it’s the busiest season in the calendar.

Canada has one of the most beautiful and robust winery regions in the world.

That’s why it’s important to showcase our award-winning wines to the world, as well as getting them into the hands of consumers in more traditional ways. This is just a taste of what we have in store for you, dear reader, in this issue of Crush.

In these pages, we take a look at new innovative ways that vineyards are managing their crops, as well as new technologies and products that make vineyard management so much easier. But it’s not all work and no play, we glance at our favourite four-legged staff members who prove that wineries are truly gone to the dogs. The wine club at Poplar Grove has three packages to choose from: a collection of six red varietals, six white varietals, or a combination of red and white. Members can change their preference at any time during the year.

While the most obvious advantage for customers may be convenience, membership definitely has its privileges too.

“Our release schedule is based around our wine club,” says Burt.

“Our members have access to the first vintages before they are released to the general public.”

Not only do members get first access, but many vineyards will make special lots of wine specifically for club members. This summer, Poplar Grove is planning to release a small batch of Syrah exclusively for its wine club members.

t’s fair to say that there’s plenty of change and innovation happening with the McWatters family. In fact, Christa-Lee McWatters Bond, director of sales & marketing for ENCORE Vineyards Ltd., says that change and innovation have been the constant motion of her family for years.

Whether it be opening one of the first vineyards in the Okanagan to feature bordeaux varietals such as cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc, welcoming of their new director of winemaking, Lawrence Buhler, in 2015, or converting the PenMar theatre in Penticton into the Okanagan’s first urban winery, the McWatters are always moving forward.

McWatters Bond knows a lot about wine and British Columbia – she grew up in the wine industry alongside her father, and watched as her family pioneered the planting of their iconic vineyard in Oliver in 1993.

Before that, the majority of the wine produced in B.C. was from cool-climate hybrids and other vinifera.

“Growing up at a winery, there was never a dull or quiet moment. We did everything together as a family, from working in the tasting room, to helping on the bottling line, and of course working in the vineyard itself,” says McWatters Bond. “We all helped plant that vineyard, and in fact, it was one of the first things that formed

grape colleagues who produce superb fruit, and grow into their new roots at the historic PenMar theatre in Penticton.

The new facility, which will be called TIME Winery, will be fully renovated to include ENCORE Vineyard’s winemaking facility, a barrel room, a custom-designed fermentation hall, a tasting lounge, bistro, and a gift shop. Additionally, the space will include a 75-seat theatre that will be used for movies, performances, cultural events, and other public and private functions.

“Our new neighbours in Penticton are hungry for additional space for community events and we are happy to be able to maintain the history and spirit of the building,” says McWatters Bond.

The focus is on cool-climate varieties and stainless-steel-based wines, which Yannick says are more aromatic and true to the grape variety without influencing the taste of the grape with any kind of oak or wood product (Yannick is the winemaker, while Greg focuses more on the business side).

“We don’t want people to pick up a bottle, take it home, and not like it. We want them to take it home and be proud of that bottle, instead of making their decision based on Air Miles,” agreed Greg.

Besides wine production, Between the Lines also hosts tours, tastings, a wine club, and yoga in the vineyard on Sundays.

With a huge number of wineries in the greater Niagara region, what makes Between the Lines stand out is the relaxed atmosphere, in-person sales, and the young age of its owners (Greg is the oldest brother at 32).

“For us, we are relatively young as winery owners, and it’s been pretty much only a benefit for us. [It] lets us put a lot of long hours in to make sure everything works. It’s not like we went into this business without any experience – we grew up in the grape industry,” said Yannick. o

The Ontario Viticulture and Winery Sustainability Certification Program has introduced a voluntary and confidential self-assessment and certification program to recognize environmentally sound, economically feasible, and socially sustainable practices. It was established to provide a marketing opportunity for raising awareness of industry commitment to the environment and to increase the ability of Ontario’s wines to compete at home and abroad. The program was launched in 2015 and has received a Premier’s Award for Agri-Food Innovation Excellence.

Since introducing a sustainability policy in 2007, about 90 per cent of their wine produced is now certified. The program provides a framework to improve vineyard and winery performance in terms of environment, social, and economic sustainability. It has also developed management tools that address production issues and helps companies develop environmental management systems.

Sustainable Wine South Africa has achieved certification of more than 90 per cent of its wine. Certification comes with a seal that indicates meeting requirements relating to agrochemicals, unregistered chemicals, non-permitted residues in grapes, natural predators in vineyards, cultivation of virgin soil, registration and treatment of water use, and the health and safety of workers. Compliance is assessed annually through a self-evaluation questionnaire, which is independently audited.

Raise a glass (and a paw) Our favourite four-legged security systems (and greeters!) are doing more than just chasing away the mailman at vineyards

or some winery owners in B.C., it’s never a ‘ruff day on the job – especially when their furry friends work alongside them as greeters, security guards, and, occasionally, even help with slurping up spills.

At Misconduct Wine Co. in Penticton, Marnier and Nutella are among the winery’s dozen employees. The two Portuguese water dogs act as four-legged mascots for the family-owned business, and no visitor’s photos are complete without a snap of their friendly faces.

Richard da Silva and Twylla Field, co-owners of the winery, consider themselves lucky to be able to work alongside their dogs each day.

“It’s so nice to have them around, they are definitely part of our family here. [We always have] people coming by to visit – people like seeing them as much as they like our wines,” says Field.

She describes Marnier and Nutella as easygoing, friendly, and outgoing dogs. The pair helps greet customers for tastings, chase away deer and varmints, maintain quality control (Field once caught Nutella, two, in the vineyard sampling grapes), and even assist with bottling – a task Field says can get messy.

“They’re usually pretty good, but if any wine gets spilled, Marnier loves wine, he’s there to clean up any spills. If he can sneak into the

manufacturing area, he’ll see if anyone drops any,” says Field, noting the 11-year-old dog likes both red and white varieties equally.

At Monster Vineyards, six-year-old Hiro and three-year-old Scout, a labborder collie mix, are official vineyard managers – it’s their job to deter pests and dig up moles that can wreck vineyard root systems. For them, being outside and around people is what makes them happy.

And at Tightrope Winery in Penticton, a bucket of balls sits at the front door for greeters Hunter and Lucy. Both part labs, the dogs love to play fetch with visitors, and owners Graham and Lyndsay O’Rourke encourage others to bring their own dogs to the winery.

“We’re quite dog-friendly here. When people have dogs, they bring them out and they have a play. A few dogs have come right in the winery. People often come with children when we get into the summertime, and they love the interaction with the pets,” says Heather, assistant general manager of Tightrope Winery.

Winery dogs are so well-loved that Polyglot Publishing now releases a winery dogs of B.C. calendar each year. The publication sells quickly, and it’s become a collector’s item among dog lovers (some even seek out and visit each of the 12 dogs every year).o

Research project uses UAVs in vineyards

winery in B.C. has paired up with a local college to research the use of UAVs in vineyards and figure

out what exactly the data will mean for wineries across the country.

Church & State Wines and the College of New Caledonia are collecting data from UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles or drones) to monitor vineyard assets and improve harvesting practices, irrigation programming, and fruit quality.

The idea began with John Pullen, marketing director at Church & State Wines. He saw opportunity to better monitor vineyard assets from the air rather than the ground (vineyard staff typically use a quad when visiting the field).

“The ability to effectively monitor high-value grape crops through to harvest is a major challenge to producing quality wine in an extremely competitive global market,” says Pullen. “I see huge potential in using this technology.”

So Pullen teamed up with Doug Jamieson, an instructor at the College of New Caledonia, to test out the drones. Jamieson and a handful of students are spearheading the twoand-a-half-year research project that hopes to prove beneficial to the wine community.

Pillars of Inspiration Food, wine, and art at Liquidity Wines in the Okanagan Valley

riving up the long and winding path towards Liquidity Wines, you pass by dewy ponds, colourful flowerbeds, flowing

vineyards, and a sculpture park of 16-foot trees made of rebar and laced with growing plant life.

When Ian MacDonald purchased the old vineyard eight years ago, his intention was to turn it into an exceptional winery and a distinctive public space. His team spent five years upgrading the in-ground technology before he began construction on the winery complex, which includes a bistro, winery, and tasting room.

The public viewing area, located on a knoll on one side of the property, has spectacular views of Vaseux Lake and surrounding mountains. He says he wanted to create the best place to experience food, wine, and art – something he calls the three pillars of the customer experience.

An avid art collector for over 25 years, MacDonald rotates approximately 70 works of art from his personal collection throughout the Liquidity property to keep things fresh, fun, and interesting.

“It truly is a gallery experience.”

The pieces vary between drawings, illustration, photography, paint, and mixed-medium. “It’s something to engage the public and get them to interact with it, think about it, and experience it,” he says. “Even the building is designed to encourage that.”

His goal was to create an entire experience for visitors. “You see the view, smell the food, taste the wine, and see the art,” he says. “We want to have as many of the senses tingling at one time.”

He says it’s common to see visitors on a wine-tour-mission while travelling in the region, often planning back-to-back tastings. So his goal for his customers was to slow the pace down for a moment and allow them to savour the experience.

“I think you can do that with the combination of experiences happening. It transports you into a different frame of mind, and when that’s happening, I feel like we are accomplishing what we set out to do.”

This summer will mark the third year that Liquidity Wines is open to the public, and just as the wines change with the season, so does the menu, and so does the art. o
