EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION IN THE WILDERNESS

Strathcona Park Lodge & Outdoor Education Centre (SPL) celebrated its 50th anniversary this year. The opportunities for schools are better than ever while the mission remains the same: to teach the wonder, spirit and worth of people and the natural world through outdoor pursuits.

Outdoor skills instruction is the building block of SPL programs. Valuable in themselves as recreational pursuits, outdoor skills are the vehicles for the curriculum goals of Environmental Awareness, Personal Growth and Group Development.

Environmental Awareness At SPL participants examine the wilderness around them and develop a sense of responsibility and belonging within it. They measure their ecological footprint during their stay at SPL and compare it with home.

Interrelationships and ecosystems are discussed and responsible stewardship is fostered through analysis and critical thinking.

Instructors SPL Instructors are professionals. They love the outdoors and they love to teach and share their passion for adventure. They are excellent role models and are chosen not only for their high level of technical skill, but because they are smart energetic, caring leaders who have the ability to work with and care for people of all ages.

This poetry was inspired by a week at SPL and his instructor. but listen to the raven and watch the eagle. you can always live your life as a happy warrior who carries no sword but devotes itself to a cause and feels no hate to those who are against it. you can always laugh with tears and cry with a smile you can always believe in something that feels right to you to carry a backpack and discover something that no one else has every seen open your mind to knowledge you can believe in the circle that holds us and nature the earth; be kind to it.

SPL is not a place you visit. It is an experience. As founder Jim Boulding said more than 25 years ago, “We are concerned with the less visible realms of education where perceptions are changed, confidence is built, bodies are strengthened, identity is broadened and a basic sense of integration with nature is experienced.�

Personal Growth A series of progressively more difficult challenges including ropes courses, rock climbing and expeditions, including guided processing of these experiences provides opportunities for individuals to develop real strengths within themselves, including leadership qualities.

Group Development Students work to become a cohesive group founded on trust, respect, openness and common goals. Groups face challenges ranging from initiative tasks to cooking dinner over a campfire and are empowered to develop their own solutions. Through instructor facilitation group members lead, support and encourage one another. Group energy carries individuals through challenges which they would not normally contemplate.

We are happy to offer special lessons, tour programs and pricing to Community Centres and School groups. The calm waters of Deep Cove provide a comfortable, safe environment for young, first time paddlers. We adapt our tours based on the needs or requests of the groups.

We can focus our tours on fitness and fun for P.E Classes, marine ecology for science and biology classes, landscape and geography and more.

At Deep Cove Canoe and Kayak Centre safety is of utmost importance. We abide by all Transport Canada regulations and all of our guides are certified Sea Kayak Guides or Instructors with current First Aid and CPR certification. We offer a guide to student ratio of 1:6 in single kayaks or 1:8 in double kayaks. This ensures that we can quickly address any safety concerns and ensure that all of our students have a great time on the water.

Our facilities include changerooms, bathrooms and showers. We have nearby picnic shelters and a grass field that can accommodate large groups. You can easily make a day trip out of your stay in Deep Cove by combining a kayak tour with the short and scenic hike up to Quarry Rock.

Programs include 1.5 hour Dragon Boat sessions or 2 hours+ kayak excursions. These programs are not offered on weekends or public holidays. A guided program is required unless qualified on-water supervision is provided. Deep Cove is an excellent venue for your school or community group.

TRAINS DELUXE

The Museum received National Historic designation in 2011, and is different from almost all other Railway Museums in North America in that it explores the social history of travel by rail in various eras. It also exhibits the interior design and decor of passenger rail cars as part of complete train “sets” that were advertised as “Deluxe Hotels-onWheels” during the golden age of rail travel between 1886 and 1936.

The museum also exhibits railway art, design and architecture at its best from the “Edwardian Era” in the first decade of the 20th century.

It is therefore a non-mechanical experience.

Due to security for interiors of these rare and fragile artifacts, students tour with guides through the sumptuous interiors of the railcars representing different eras: the 1907 “Soo-Spokane Train Deluxe” and the 1929 “Trans-Canada Limited” complimented by Business, Royal, and interpretive cars.

Tours also include the beautiful “Royal Alexandra Hall” the restored 3,000 square-foot, 2-1/2 storey high grand cafe from the former 1906 luxurious Royal Alexandra Hotel of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The huge 2-storey-high carved coal fireplace from the formal dining room of the hotel is also on display as a first impression for visitors in the imposing Entrance Hall of the Museum. The website has a large amount of history in text and photos to help students learn more before they arrive, as well as a link to special school tours for grades 1 to 3 during the period Mid-Oct to Mid-May. The tours are enhanced by other interpretive visual and textural material in the buildings before and after tours, all by advance arrangement

U’mista Cultural Centre The U’mista is one of the longest-operating and most successful First Nations cultural facilities in BC, opened in 1980 to house potlatch artifacts seized during an earlier period of cultural repression. From April until the end of October you can arrange a pony ride service for your party where for $85.00 up to 12 children, accompanied by a farm attendant, get to ride on Krokur – Maplewood’s Icelandic horse.

Since 1975 North Vancouver’s Maplewood Farm has been a place where animals and children can meet and get to know each other. For the animals, it’s a special home where they can live in comfort and safety, cared for by the farm’s workers.

For the children, it’s a chance to spend time at a working farm in the heart of the city.

Maplewood Farm was created by Dirk Oostinde, former District of North Vancouver Parks Superindendent. His plan was to expose urban children to rural life and give them some education about basic country life and provide them with an experience they might not normally get.

Farm residents include goats, cows, sheep, donkeys, horses, ducks, chickens, rabbits and pot-bellied pigs.

During the winter months, Maplewood has a program called “Behind the Scenes”, where young farm visitors get a chance to be a farmer for an hour. Children help farm workers collect fresh eggs and groom and feed the animals.

The “Behind the Scenes” program runs at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm two days each month from October to March.

Preregistration is required to make sure you get a spot. The program books up quickly, so don’t wait too long.

Barkeville Celebrates 150 Years Imagine… hand-digging through layers of soggy, worthless, frustrating gravel, hoping and praying the next shovel-stroke will expose a fortune in gold. Twenty feet, thirty feet, forty feet: everyone says it’s crazy, but there’s too much at stake. Then, just when the outcome seems impossibly bleak, at a depth of fiftytwo feet, the ground begins to pay. The lead is struck, and the greatest creek-side placer gold deposit the world has ever seen is suddenly yours for the taking.

This is Barkerville’s story.

The Cariboo region of British Columbia’s central interior has been profoundly shaped by gold, thanks to a simple, working-class English prospector named Billy Barker who, in 1862, spearheaded a twenty-year, multi-billion dollar industrial revolution that literally helped build a Province.

Lodge dorm rooms sleep 12 to14 people, and every room is equipped with a private en suite bathroom with showers, toilets, and sinks. A lounge/meeting space is available on each floor. In total, we can accommodate 330 people in dorm rooms.

Wolfe Creek Lodge is a full service luxury lodge with 47 well-appointed guest rooms. A maximum of 132 beds are available, depending on room configuration. The lodge is ideal for community building and networking as people mingle in inviting lounge areas with fireplaces.

The Okanagan and Little Rimrock meeting rooms can accommodate more formal gatherings. The Rimrock Dining Room provides an intimate setting for up to 88 guests. Wolfe Creek Lodge is the perfect location for a Staff Retreat or Pro D event.

Our Pinnacle Day Lodge is an awe-inspiring post and beam building in the heart of camp. The Pinnacle Dining

Having grown up in the Strathcona area and having walked from my elementary school, Strathcona, through Chinatown to Chinese School for four years, I thought that I knew Chinatown well. However, when Judy Maxwell took fifteen of my fellow members of the Canadian Federation of University Women from throughout B.C. on a tour, I learned so much more. Vancouver’s Chinatown is full of history. We learned how the Government of Canada was forced to recognize its Chinese-Canadians as Canadian citizens and the impact of the sacrifices made by ChineseCanadian soldiers during the two world wars.

We walked on the main street, Pender, but also went to Shanghai Alley, Keefer Street and even the alleys which lead to once bustling courtyards of old buildings – formerly lively homes to many multi-generational families. We even entered a historic building which is currently a recreation area for players of mah jong, fan tan and pai gow. How fascinating, too, it was to see Pender Street from a balcony which towered over the walkers below and provided an incredible view of the adjacent structures – all the better for us to view the intricate designs and unique architecture.

Judy made the visit to Chinatown alive as she talked about its structures, the people, their businesses, triumphs, pains and joys. “Wow – listen to that!” The excited teacher just noticed the complete absence of sound coming from his students participating in Stanley Park Ecology Society’s (SPES) Mysteries of the Marsh program.

A great blue heron had landed right in front of the students and was holding them rapt, laying on their bellies, silent and fully absorbed, watching as the heron hungrily ate fish after fish.

Located in Vancouver’s Stanley Park, SPES offers a wide range of environmental education field trips for elementary school students. Students discover towering trees, slithering slugs, incredible invertebrates and beautiful birds in hands-on sciencebased and curriculum-connected activities both in Stanley Park and local classrooms.

SKYTREK ADVENTURE PROGRAMS FOR SCHOOLS SkyTrek Adventure Park is a fully insured Aerial Adventure Park filled with fun, unique, and exciting experiences for all students. Teachers and students can challenge themselves in our High Ropes course or experience a fun filled adrenaline rush at our Adventure Tower.

The High Ropes course features four courses, each one progressively more challenging than the last. Our competent and highly trained staff will set your students up with harnesses, and teach them how to use all their equipment in our training course. Once completed they will move on to the exciting High Ropes course that includes obstacles such as a Skateboard, Swinging logs, Monkey bridges, Cargo nets and a multitude of other exhilarating challenges.

The Adventure Tower is our most adrenaline filled attraction. Featuring a 13m high simulated free fall, a giant swing, a climbing wall with a multitude of different routes, each varying in difficulty, and a climbing route set up a series of swinging logs, it is sure to offer an adventure for every skill level.

The activities at SkyTrek Adventure Park will encourage teamwork, leadership skills and inspire self-confidence.

Students will have to work together, support one another and participate as a group for maximum success.

Our park utilizes the most environmentally friendly practices possible and students will learn the importance of environmental sustainability.

At SkyTrek Adventure Park the well-being of our guests is our number one concern. We ensure that the students are competent and capable before they are allowed to enter the ropes course. Our equipment is routinely inspected and all aspects of the ropes course are built to the highest standards. While in the trees the students will continuously be under supervision by our guides to ensure they are making their way through the course properly.

SkyTrek Adventure Park is open from mid May to Thanksgiving weekend. We offer group rates on weekdays for the months of May, June, September and October. Explore the history of Walhachin, a British orchard settlement established in 1908, with a walking tour of town site and original houses, demos on soap making, spinning/weaving, telegraphy and steam engines, and participate in archaeological digging techniques. Our museum contains First Nations artifacts, natural flora and fauna, and household items left behind from the British settlers. The museum is situated in the community hall named in memory of the Walhachin soldiers who left for the First World War. This grand exodus of 90% of its population was the demise of Walhachin. Of 117 men who lived here, 97 enlisted and went to war. The wooden flume used to bring water to the orchards fell into disrepair and the town never recovered from this disaster.

Normal hours of operation are 10-5 Friday to Monday June 1st to September 30.

However, we are very flexible and tours can be arranged with advanced notice.

The Delta Museum and Archives Society offers curriculum coordinated education programs for elementary and high school students as well as youth and senior groups.

• Complimentary chaperone lift tickets will be provided to teachers and adult chaperones valid for your trip date only. As with years gone by, these tickets will be based on an 8:1 ratio for elementary and a 12:1 ratio for secondary schools. Any additional adult day of lift tickets can be purchased for $65 (HST included). Both of these tickets will only be valid for your RTS trip date, no exceptions.

• We value all the hard work that goes into organizing trips with the Ride Tribe Schools program for your students each season and would like to offer the following rewards to organizers: • The first reward is a $2/student commission paid back to the organizer through a WB Gift Card should they bring within 5% of the numbers submitted on the school trip forms sent in two weeks prior to your trip date. For example, if you submit your Ride Tribe Schools Trip forms with 100 students, and 98 actually attend on the day of your trip, you will receive a Whistler Blackcomb Gift Card in the value of $196. If 100 students were submitted on your forms and only 90 attend, then you would not be eligible for this perk.

• For the second reward, we will be offering complimentary any-day lift tickets to the organizer based on the following ratios: 1 ticket/trip with 25-49 students - 2 tickets/trip with 50+ students. The tickets will not be available on the day of the trip. You will be issued a Mountain Money Number that you can take to any WB Guest Services location to pick up your tickets.

Benefits: • All students ski/ride in a session with a coach for the entire day. The presence of a coach is mandatory, but students will be having so much fun it won't matter.

• Students will be supervised by our coaches for the entire day on Blackcomb Mountain. School Rewards • Complimentary Chaperone lift tickets will be provided to teachers and adult chaperones valid for your trip date only. As with years gone by, these tickets will be based on an 8:1 ratio for elementary & a 12:1 ratio for secondary schools. Any additional adult day of lift tickets can be purchased for $65 (HST incl). Both of these tickets will only be valid for your RTS trip date, no exceptions.

• We value all the hard work that goes into organizing trips with the Ride Tribe Schools program for your students each season, and would like to offer the following rewards to organizers.

• The first reward is a $2/student commission paid back to the organizer through a WB Gift Card should they bring within 5% of the numbers submitted on the school trip forms sent in two weeks prior to your trip date. Discover the Revelstoke Railway Museum!

Through our intergenerational program students will have a personal experience that brings the railway and our country to life.

Join us trackside for a discovery stations program that explores the railways role in the development of British Columbia and Canada, community development through immigration and resources, railway operations as part of the transportation system, as well as looking to the future of trains and personal safety.

There are a variety of programs available for a wide range of age groups and and we are happy to modify stations to fit interested classes, based on lesson plans and learning outcomes. Curriculum based programs are established for grade 5 and 10 levels with more in development.

Teachers are encouraged to consider a class visit and share any specific topics, themes or information that is of interest for their students.

Hands - On - Heritage The Alberni Valley Museum offers a variety of school programs for Kindergarten through Grade 12 classes. Interactive and engaging programs are offered at three sites: the Community Museum, McLean Mill National Historic Site and the Maritime Discovery Centre. Opportunities to discover Port Alberni and provincial history, from First Nations culture and pioneer experiences to forestry and maritime heritage, our programs address many of the prescribed learning outcomes of the Social Studies curriculum.

The McLean National Historic Site is a restored 1920s steam sawmill and lumber camp. Step back in time and discover the early days of BC’s logging and forestry industry and experience what mill camp life would have been like.

At the Maritime Discovery Centre visit a lighthouse and gallery. Located on the waterfront in the centre of our active deep sea port, exhibits focus on the history of lighthouses, navigation and exploration of the west coast, the 1964 Tsunami and the contemporary work of Neptune Canada.

The Alberni Valley Museum is a regional history museum utilizing a unique visible storage display system. Collections include First Nations art and culture, folk-art, agriculture and modern history.

Our Temporary Exhibits Gallery hosts new exhibits every year.

Programs and tours are available throughout the school year and can be combined to create a half- or full-day experience. All twelve of our core programs are presented by our experienced staff and volunteers and are linked to the BC Social Studies curriculum.

Nestled in the district of Errington on Vancouver Island, NIWREC is a park-like setting with a peaceful, rustic atmosphere. When visiting the centre, you will be able to view eagles, several species of owls, falcons, hawks, ravens, turkey vultures and black bears.

Your class will be greeted at the Museum of Nature, a living display of flora and static mounts of fauna.

You will head over to the eagle flight cage were eagles can be viewed through one way glass. Monitors have been set up for children to view rehabilitating black bears. The public viewing area of non-releasable birds is beautifully arranged for your delight. As well, children will be able to walk around a release pond where turtles, ducks, geese and fish reside. New this year is a Trapper’s Cabin, where the history of trapping will be explored.

During your tour, the children will be visited by a glove-trained bird (an owl or falcon) and receive an educational talk about the bird. A sponsorship certificate will also be given to your class for supporting the centre with your visit.

NIWRC’s docents are highly enthusiastic and well trained in delivering the programs offered. There are many visual biofacts and sensual displays available for all ages and capabilities of children.

This truly is a “Wildlife Experience for the Whole Class.”
