From the Headmaster Dear Families and Friends of Delbarton, It never even crossed my mind that my final letter in Delbarton Today would be a memorial tribute to Abbot Giles, but so it is.

The ways of the Lord are infinite. On behalf of the monastic community, I want to thank all of you who came to the wake and Funeral Mass. Your presence and the outpouring of sympathy were a great consolation to us. Sincere thanks also to all of you who sent Mass cards and messages of sympathy at the loss of this very special person – a monk, priest, leader, educator and friend to countless individuals.

Since Abbot Giles’ passing, I have had occasion to reminisce with many of you about the influence he had on us. I think it is safe to say that, if your path passed through Delbarton in the last fifty years, you probably have at least one Fr. Giles story to tell. Many of you have several! I know that I have mine. This is a testament to the amazing ability he had to connect with people. It is also a testament to his deep and profound love of Delbarton. I hope you will not find it irreverent, but for me Fr. Giles was “Mr. Delbarton”. As Fr. Hilary mentioned in his homily, Fr. Giles spent virtually his entire adult life at Delbarton, arriving as a fourteen-year-old freshman and now resting in the abbey cemetery. Except for the years he was off studying theology, Fr. Giles could be found here at Delbarton. Unlike the author of this letter, Fr. Giles was not a traveler. This was his home and it seemed that all he needed to be happy was right here. If ever there was a model of Benedictine stability, it was Fr. Giles.

One of the last conversations I had with Fr. Giles occurred over Christmas break. He said to me “So what are you reading these days, kiddo?” I told him I was reading a biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the German theologian and anti-Nazi resistance martyr. “Awesome!” he replied. I knew that my answer would please him, because he often spoke about Bonhoeffer in his homilies and talks to the monks. We started talking about Bonhoeffer and Fr. Giles repeated something he had said before. “You know, I think Bonhoeffer was a crypto-Catholic.”

I told him that I had to respectfully disagree. From my reading, Bonhoeffer was a Lutheran through and through. For him the Bible was everything; and, in reading the Bible devoutly and attentively one would hear God speaking directly to one’s heart. In this regard, Bonhoeffer sounds like he could be talking about the monastic practice of lectio divina, a practice that Fr. Giles cherished and advocated. Perhaps this is what made Fr. Giles think that Bonhoeffer was “Catholic”. Fr. Giles himself was very much a man in love with the Scriptures. This was

always plainly evident when he preached. Bonhoeffer once wrote: “Do not try to make the Bible relevant. Its relevance is axiomatic...

Do not defend God’s Word, but testify to it... Trust to the Word.” I could imagine Fr. Giles saying exactly the same thing.

One of the things that Fr. Giles often did say was “The other guy first”. That was one of his mantras in his work as headmaster. One of the most enduring gifts that Delbarton has received from Fr. Giles is the vision of “servant leadership” that he championed and which permeates the school culture today.

The most recent version of the School’s mission statement reflects this: Delbarton School, an independent Roman Catholic learning community guided by the Benedictine monks of St. Mary’s Abbey with their lay colleagues, welcomes diverse young men and challenges them to pursue excellence, to build character, and to develop leadership through service, by educating the whole person: mind, body and spirit. The words in bold were added at the last revision. That is the legacy of Fr. Giles. That is how he lived his life.

I want to conclude with another quote from Bonhoeffer, because he says it far better that I could. After a former student had died in combat, he wrote the following in a letter to another one of his former students: In life with Jesus Christ, death as a general fate approaching us from without is confronted by death from within, one’s own death, the free death of daily dying with Jesus Christ. Those who live with Christ die daily to their own will. Christ in us gives us over to death so that he can live within us.

Thus our own inner dying grows to meet that death from without.

Christians receive their own death in this way, and in this way our physical death very truly becomes not the end but rather the fulfillment of our own life with Jesus Christ. Here we enter into a community with the One who at his own death was able to say, “It is finished.”

The Darché family celebrates the Hall of Honor induction of Rich Darché ’72 .

Rich Darché ’72, P’07, ’10, ’11, ’13 Delbarton School has always been a significant part of Rich Darchés life. Born and raised in Morristown, NJ, Rich entered Delbarton as an 8th grader in 1968 and immediately embraced his Delbarton experience. Lower school track, Saturday morning school, green Delbarton blazers, ties, and predominantly monastic educators became the new normal. He played as a substitute on the varsity golf team in 8th grade and was a regular member of the team for his four high school years. He was also one of the photography editors of the Archway yearbook staff.

After graduating Delbarton in 1972, Rich attended the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. He earned a BA in Economics in 1976 and returned to Morristown to join Masda Corporation, the family distribution business, in Whippany, NJ. After two years, he decided to leave the business to start RJ Darché Associates, his own sales and marketing company in the leisure products industry.

While building his business, Rich became

a licensed pilot in 1978 to more effectively and efficiently cover the northeast and mid-Atlantic states. To this day, flying is an enduring passion.

In 1982, Rich formed Kodar Corporation to market the Gaslow Propane Fuel gauge to mass merchants and catalog houses, and in just a few years, he built the sales to 600,000 pieces annually. In 1996, he incorporated and became President of Cavagna North America, an Italian based company. Cavagna is a manufacturer of high pressure and propane gas control valves and regulators. The company currently supplies gas control equipment to Weber, Blue Rhino, Praxair, and Amerigas, among others, with annual sales totaling 55 million dollars.

In 1984, Rich married his wife, Virginia Kearney, whom he met through his Delbarton classmate, Dennis Kearney.

They have been blessed with five children and one grandchild (so far): Christine (who with her husband Andrew Yawger have a son Colin), Richard (RJ), Michael, Matthew, and Patrick. He is very proud

that his sons are also graduates of Delbarton, classes ’07, ’10, ’11, and ’13 respectively. Rich is an active member of his parish, St. James, in Basking Ridge, and currently holds an advisory seat on its financial board. He was also a member of the Parents Council for St. Mary’s College, in Notre Dame, Indiana from 2005 through 2008.

As class representative since 1972, Rich has participated in many alumni events and encourages classmate support for annual giving and attendance at reunions. Not only has he been a consistent contributor to the annual giving since graduating, but he is also a capital campaign donor. Rich continues to support Delbarton School year after year because he feels the brotherhood and Catholic tradition formulated during his high school years have greatly influenced the person he is today. Giving back to the Delbarton community has always been, and will remain, an important priority.

Brian Hanlon ’87 Brian’s Delbarton Experience began well before he arrived in fall 1983. In fact, the Hanlon Clan had four sons attend Delbarton School: John ’81, Tim ’84, Brian ’87 and Kevin ’88.

During Brian’s time with the Green Wave, he played Varsity Football, captained the Wrestling Team for two years, played Freshman Baseball and ran Track. He also was elected to Student Government positions and was appointed a Deanery leader. Next, Brian earned a B.S. in Business Administration from West Virginia University where he majored in Marketing. Brian wrestled for the Mountaineers from 1987-89, was a member of the Finance & Marketing Clubs and the Ski Club. Brian serves as the Mountaineer Ambassador for NJ and is Vice President of the Jersey Shore WVU Alumni Chapter.

industry for both institutional and private clients. After seven years on Wall Street trading floors, Brian left New York to join Merrill Lynch in Morristown. Currently, Brian is an Executive Vice President & Sr. Financial Advisor for Capitol Securities where he opened and anchors their newest branch office in Red Bank, NJ. The Delbarton Alumni Association has enjoyed the long-standing and loyal services of Brian. A Past President of the Alumni Association, he has served as Class Rep for twenty-five years and as an active Board Member for fourteen years.

He currently Co-Chairs the Delbarton Alumni Club of the Jersey Shore.

During his tenure on the Board, Brian travelled across the country with the Alumni Association. Leading by example, he attended and participated in all aspects on the Alumni Calendar, one of the greatest distinctions that set Brian apart during his Alumni tour of duty.

During his term as President, Brian - with the help of his Board - helped to evolve annual regional gatherings into the Delbarton Alumni Clubs. Brian kept alumni connected, and his fun and endearing personality filtered throughout the entire Delbarton alumni community. While Brian served on the Board, Alumni participation in Annual Giving more than doubled. Brian’s favorite task as President was to address the Delbarton student body at Homecoming pep rallies. He naturally bonded with future alums, and earned their acceptance and respect, ultimately, establishing what we call the Brotherhood.

Brian and his wife Jenny Lynne married at St. Mary’s Abbey Delbarton in 2005, and they continue to hold the record for most alums in a Delbarton Today wedding photo! The couple has two daughters, Lily Ann (8) and Emma (6), and Brian serves as a Board Member for the St. James Athletic Association, the school their daughters attend. He is a member of the Red Bank Elks Lodge No.233 on the Navesink River and has held several positions on Red Bank commissions and committees.

As legend has it, one day while attending St. Rose of Lima Academy, Brian’s mother Jo Ann couldn’t brush his hair to match the rest of the Brothers Hanlon on picture day. His mother, visibly frustrated, said to her husband, “Your third son has a wig for a head of hair!” The Hanlon siblings and friends quickly picked up Brian’s new alias. Fast forward to spring freshman year, his older brother Tim, a senior, made sure the entire student body referred to Brian as “Wiggy” while he was out sick.

Miraculously, Wiggy made the cut for Freshman Baseball, the last name on the final roster. Coach explained, “We just needed a kid with a nickname.”

Hence, Brian Hanlon became known to the Delbarton Community with great affection as “Wiggy”.

Rudy Marchesi ’67 Rudy graduated from Delbarton in 1967 and his time there was marked by varied interests and experiences. Upon graduation he was recognized as “Athlete of the Year”, served as President of the Glee Club and was a member of a performing vocal group that served as a catalyst for future development of Delbarton’s music programs.

After a degree in Psychology from Springfield College he was pursuing a graduate degree at Sonoma State University when the lure of the grape became too strong and he made the abrupt turn toward a career in viticulture and winemaking. After several years of valuable experience in California he headed back to his native New Jersey and planted a vineyard in western NJ and in 1982 established one of the Garden State’s first farm wineries, Alba Vineyard.

In 1991 he joined a regional importer/wholesaler, Allied Beverage Group, to help them establish a fine wine division and eventually served as Vice President of Brand Development.

In 1997, after visiting his daughter who was attending Reed College in Portland Oregon, Rudy started consulting to several Oregon wineries and eventually joined Montinore Estate as President. In 2005 he and his youngest daughter Kristin purchased Montinore Estate and in the ensuing years developed it into one of Oregon’s most recognized brands with sales throughout the US, Europe and Asia.

Montinore Estate is now the second largest producer of certified Biodynamic wines in the US.

He served as President of the NJ Department of Agriculture Wine Advisory Council, cofounder of the Rutgers Cooperative Extension short course on viticulture, and studied at the Institute of Masters of Wine in London becoming the first American recipient of their Rosemont Scholarship.

Rudy lives with his wife Susan on their farm in Gaston, Oregon where they grow Pinot Noir, raise various livestock and grow a variety of fruits and vegetables for the extended family. His life is spiced with daily sessions on the piano and as many sailing trips as he can fit in between winery responsibilities.

Rudy’s youngest daughter, Kristin, is the General Manager of Montinore Estate.

His oldest daughter, Greta, received her PhD from UC Berkeley two years ago and is currently teaching at Dartmouth College. His step children Sean and Margaret have both recently graduated from the University of Oregon and are pursuing careers in commercial real estate and journalism.

Rudy has served on a variety of State Boards and Industry Councils both in

By George Diebold ’71 n an often-overlooked part of America, there exists a mesmerizing landscape so captivating that it has drawn me back year after year to record its stunning beauty.

The area, which consists of some 3,000 square miles of verdant rolling hills, is known as The Palouse.

Palouse Endless Road

This land extends from the eastern boarder of Washington State into Idaho and it is home to a massive wheat belt, rivaled only by America’s mid-western states. Few places I have ever explored have provided me with the stark, graphic quality I am always looking for in my photographs. The combination of unimaginable shades of green along with constantly changing lighting conditions presents the opportunity to photograph a limitless variety of panoramic landscapes.

With the exception of one year when I photographed the wheat harvest in the late summer, all of my shooting was done in the spring. It is during this period when the new seedlings are taking hold that the greatest contrast in color is at its peak.

I usually arrive when the planting is completed, and the absence of human activity adds to the overall starkness of the environment. In fact, it is very rare that I run into anyone while shooting and this in itself can create a whole different set of circumstances.

Since the entire region is an endless crisscross of roads, mostly gravel and unpaved, finding ones way around can at times be very frustrating. It sometimes seems as though once the planting is done, people stays inside their homes until the harvest. What is a blessing photographically can often become a real dilemma when evening sets in and it comes time to find my way back to a town or my hotel.

Regarding the actual process of being on the road for five or six weeks, in search of the perfect image; in a nutshell, not very glamorous.

As I recalled in one of my recent blogs, between my two longest trips in 2017 I was on the road for ten weeks. I racked up a total of 26,000 miles of driving, which equates to 371 miles a day for 70 straight days – like a trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco every day for ten weeks. A long day considering it does not include any of the actual shooting time.

People familiar with my website georgediebold.com know that I define my imagery as either Imagined or Discovered, that is to say, pictures dreamed up in the studio, as opposed to images found already existing in nature.

The pictures I selected for this article fall into that second category. Whether Imagined or Discovered, there is a common ground of that moment of discovery, illustrating the control of the studio versus the freedom of shooting on location.

As a photographer, I like to point out that having blind ambition is a big asset, never spending too much time trying to explain the validity of what I decided to shoot. I would rather concentrate on exposing the opportunity and let the viewer concentrate on the visual excitement.

Palouse Spring

The Palouse: Harvesting America The Palouse is a major American agricultural region, primarily producing wheat and legumes. Located 160 miles north of the Oregon Trail, the region thrived in the 1880s century and was once Washington’s most populous area. The origin of the name “Palouse” is uncertain. Perhaps it derived from the name of the local Palus tribe, or maybe French-Canadian fur traders coined the name from the familiar French word pelouse, “land with short and thick grass”. Once an extensive prairie, today virtually all of the Palouse is planted with agricultural crops, creating the stunning vistas captured by professional photographer George Diebold ’71.

Deconstructing Admissions

Delbarton and the Independent School Admissions Landscape

Independent school admissions is a challenging business. Myths and misconceptions often prevail over facts and reality. To the onlooker, the process remains shrouded in mystery, yet, for those making difficult decisions regarding who will be accepted or declined, it is not about secrecy or “magic”, but about fit: matching student capacity and personality with school offerings and culture, and making informed, prayerful choices regarding real human beings.

This is certainly the case at Delbarton, where a faculty committee of twelve to fourteen members takes seriously its charge to be as fair and responsible as possible in its collective deliberations.

So it is in this same spirit of community and conversation – two core Benedictine virtues – that I write this article and provide both a glimpse into Delbarton admissions and an assessment of the current challenges facing a competitive independent Catholic school like our own.

Any discussion about Delbarton admissions must acknowledge the tremendous work of many individuals.

Specifically, the admissions process at Delbarton is very democratic, meaning that the responsibility for making decisions is shared by the very stakeholders, namely the teachers, charged with educating those they admit. This structure is unique among our

peer schools and speaks to the trust and responsibility the administration invests in our faculty. Starting with the Headmaster, who oversees our admissions strategy, to the office staff of our amazing admissions team, much goes into creating a strong and wellbalanced student class year after year. I thank the many professionals who bear the weight of this important process;

their labors advance the strength and reputation of Delbarton as it moves confidently into the future.

Delbarton welcomed these boys to the Class of 2022 and Class of 2024 during a 2-day Orientation in September 2017.

As I assess the state of Delbarton admissions, I am inspired by very clear institutional gains. In the past three years, the annual financial aid budget grew 50% from approximately $2 million to $3 million, broadening our student

population by attracting talented young men who otherwise might not afford Delbarton. Although this budget is still not large enough to meet the need of every qualified applicant, its growth signals the faith of families, friends, and foundations who believe enough in our mission to provide crucial donor support.

Despite the “male crisis” in education and the reality of tuitions outpacing inflation, Delbarton remains as popular as ever among families looking for the best educational option for their sons. We know this anecdotally and through surveys reporting the public perception of Delbarton.

To learn why people do and do not enroll, we recently commissioned a study of applicants and families, and the results drive our strategic planning, marketing and advertising. Not surprisingly, the most common phrases used to describe Delbarton were prestigious, challenging, academic, exciting, and intellectual.

Delbarton ranked higher than its top competitors in: • Attractiveness of campus • Academic reputation • Variety of courses • Community service opportunities • Quality of academic facilities • Contact about financial aid • Contact with teachers • Campus visit before admission • Post-admission contact Compared to our competitors, however, Delbarton is perceived as less artistic, affordable, and diverse. Thus, we are motivated to share the strength of our arts program, the dramatic increases in financial aid, and the growth in our student diversity.

There is much to celebrate in our research data and, of course, much work to do.

However, many might not realize the broad reach of Delbarton. We draw students from ten counties and eighty municipalities, south from the Princeton area, north from the New York state border, east from in and around Newark, and west from towns approaching Pennsylvania. Delbarton continues to make dramatic strides in welcoming a growing and diverse student population.

Nearly 20% of our students self-identify as non-white and the economic background of our families is increasingly diverse. Our students represent a range of religious backgrounds too: roughly 20% are non-Catholic, including students from Protestant, Jewish, Muslim, and Hindu faith traditions. In the last three years, moreover, we developed one of our most successful Delbarton student organizations, Diversity Among Peers (DAP), which sponsors a robust calendar of events from speaking panels, urban retreats, and co-ed coordinate programs to leadership training, workshops, and parent-student socials. With the creation of our recent Admission Outreach Coordinator role, we have been able to spread the good word to others about these ambitious institutional goals and gains. This is certainly an exciting time for Delbarton admissions.

We have adopted several initiatives to connect Delbarton more effectively with our market population. For example, short videos are now posted on Delbarton.org to clarify the application process as well as our financial aid and transportation programs. NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools) market research and demographic studies are used to target populations not normally considering a school like

Responding to changing consumer behavior and demand, we continually modify and update strategic touch points using tools like Google analytics and process audits. The good news is that, while many peer schools see declines in

the quality of incoming classes due to a shrinking demographic pool, Delbarton maintains its student profile strength despite the “triple threat� of higher tuitions, fewer students, and greater educational options including competitive public schools, magnet and charter options, and a burgeoning online and homeschooling movement. The downside of generating expanded interest is that Delbarton must decline qualified applicants.

by necessity must decline some strong candidates every year, we do not want this reality to discourage prospective students from looking at us. Instead, we have made the application process as open and welcoming as possible for students to apply so that it is left to the Admissions Committee to make the acceptance decisions according to the changing strengths and needs of each incoming class. So if you know a young man thinking about applying to Delbarton, please encourage him to do so or to contact me directly with any questions.

As mentioned, we streamlined the entire admissions process to be less daunting for families. We also host a large fall Open House in October and an Accepted Student Reception in February. These measures are intended to connect Delbarton with the public in a more open and inviting way.

How the admissions process works.

The majority of our students are accepted into our usual entry points of 7th grade and 9th grade where we typically have a class of about 34 (2 sections of 17) for 7th and 135 (34 of whom come from our own 8th grade) for 9th. We also encourage transfer applications to our 10th and 11th grades since we are always looking for talented young men to join us, though we do not consider candidates for 8th or 12th grades. At full capacity, we are a community of just under 600 boys in grades 7 through 12. Although Delbarton

The admissions calendar runs from August (when online applications open) to mid-January (when decisions are finalized). In order to be considered for admission, applicants must complete the online application, interview at the school, and sit for the Delbarton admissions examination that involves aptitude, subject achievement, and writing sample components. We conveniently offer interviews every Saturday in the fall and testing on two Saturdays, once in November and once in December. In mid-January, students are accepted, declined, or placed into our wait pool which remains active until June.

The Admissions Committee considers three areas when making decisions on applicants: academic strength (grades, standardized test scores, and teacher recommendations), student character (admissions interview and recommendations), and extracurricular contributions (arts, athletics, community service, and leadership). Delbarton seeks to build a well-rounded class, so strong students who also demonstrate a talent or passion in a particular area often draw the attention of the Committee. Consideration also goes to legacy candidates (sons and grandsons of graduates) and siblings (brothers of current or former students). With all these variables, the one constant is that acceptance criteria are always exacting. Indeed, there is no such thing as a “sure” admit, as we routinely decline applicants whose intelligence, extracurricular talent, or legacy/sibling status alone are not enough to gain admission.

The Legacy of Abbot Giles P. Hayes, OSB

passed away in the seventy-ninth year of his life and the fifty-ninth of monastic profession. For many he was the face of Delbarton. 67 of his 79 years were spent in close association with the School.

Peter was born on February 27, 1939 in Newark, New Jersey to the late Florence Auth and Dr. Gerald Hayes, M.D. He entered Delbarton School for ninth grade in 1952 and his leadership skills revealed themselves early; in 1956, he was Delbarton Student Body President. He attended St. Vincent’s College in Latrobe, PA and St. John’s University in Collegeville, MN, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy.

In 1959, he professed monastic vows to the Order of St. Benedict at St. Mary’s Abbey in Atchison Kansas, taking the name ‘Giles’, and received seminary training from both St. John’s and St. Mary’s. In 1965, he was ordained to the priesthood and did postgraduate studies at Catholic University, Seton Hall University, Rutgers University, and Princeton Theological Seminar. In 1987, he received an honorary doctorate from Georgetown University an appropriate honorarium since he guided so many Delbarton graduates to its doors.

In 1980, Father Giles began the first of two five-year tenures as Headmaster. His second tour of duty was from 1995-1999.

Nothing made him happier than interacting with Delbarton students.

On March 8, 2006, he was elected and confirmed as the tenth abbot of St. Mary’s Abbey, was blessed on June 10, 2006, and served until March 8, 2014. He was pleased to serve on the Executive Board of the Conference of Major Superiors of Men – the pontifical conference that promotes the welfare of all religious priests, brothers, and candidates in the United States – from 2006 to 2013, acting as President in 2012-2013. He also performed local community service with the Morris County Urban League, MORHELP, and Morris County Fair Housing, among others.

At Delbarton, Father Giles served in many positions: teacher, coach, dean, guidance counselor, and two terms as Headmaster,

from 1980-1985 and 1996-2000. As Headmaster, he attended as many athletic events, concerts, and plays as he could. He enjoyed construction projects, and Delbarton facilities expanded during his tenure as abbot, adding the Fine Arts Center, which transformed the arts at Delbarton, the Brian Fleury Baseball Field, the Ryan Family Soccer Field, Passarelli Track and Cocoziello Lacrosse Field.

Abbot Giles was the ultimate fan. Show any sign of energy and passion, and Abbot Giles was your instant supporter.

Struggle with self-doubt, and he was your avid advocate. He inspired generations of boys to reach higher, try harder and do their best. He taught them to believe in themselves telling them “You can do it, kiddo!” He loved aphorisms and printed his favorites on cards to hand out to students, sayings like “The other guy first” and “If you think you’re finished, you are.” He coined the classic Delbarton chant: “What school do you go to? ”Delbarton!”

“TOGETHER!” As headmaster and abbot, Abbot Giles helped cement Delbarton’s foundational drive for excellence, intuitively understanding the power, in today’s parlance, of a strong and distinctive brand.

In his 67 years as student and, later, as teacher, coach and headmaster, Abbot Giles witnessed and influenced the evolution of Delbarton’s unique ethos.

Teaching and modeling tolerance and acceptance came naturally to him, and his commitment to the Delbarton

Appalachian Program never wavered. For nearly 35 years, from 1980 through 2014, he organized gift, clothing and food drives to support the coal mining regions of the Eastern Kentucky, and recruited busloads of Delbarton juniors and their parents to join him. Post-Hurricane Sandy, the School’s focus turned to more local needs and, in the past few years, Delbarton delivered Christmas to hundreds of families in Paterson, NJ. He approved.

For many, Giles was Delbarton. When news of his death spread on social media, tributes poured in from people whose lives he touched. Alumni reported that he gave them confidence, listened, respected and encouraged them, offering kind, insightful and supportive guidance.

He told one young man recruited by a service academy, “Aspire, aspire, ASPIRE!” He encouraged the boys to be risk takers and he heartily appreciated competitive sports for how they taught fair play, justice and respect. Nobody supported Green Wave athletes more enthusiastically than Giles. “Way to go, big guy!” he would say when things went well. The message was always the same: believe in yourself.

He embodied the school motto Succisa Virescit. When his own health failed, he never backed down. In recent years he quietly navigated sports fields and events in a motorized cart with an oxygen tank at his side. Never give up. Never stop climbing. Former Delbarton Lacrosse Head Coach Chuck Ruebling ’79 calls him, “The most affirming person I have ever known. He was the #1 go-to guy in difficult times and a great priest, school leader, mentor, and friend.”

Abbot Giles was also a masterful relationship builder and, knowing the power of communications, he penned thousands of personal notes, letters and, later, emails. As headmaster, he sent a hand-written birthday card to every Delbarton student, specifically referencing the young man’s activities.

Invariably he would end his notes, ‘Thank you for all that you do for Delbarton.’ The hidden message was, if you are not already doing something… start.

Abbot Giles recognized the importance of expressing appreciation and shared gratitude for even the smallest gesture. He also understood that Delbarton and St. Mary’s Abbey require the generosity of many to thrive, and so he became an adept and enthusiastic fundraiser. “It’s been expensive to know you, Giles,” joked one close friend who had been approached perhaps one too many times for a donation. Undaunted, Giles, the Lone Ranger of fundraising, tried to find the right fit for a potential donor, optimistically hoping that the financial support would benefit both donor and Abbey or School. In a fitting salute, on May 18, 2018, Abbot Giles was honored posthumously with his good friend Tom Ferguson, Chairman Emeritus of the Delbarton School Lay Board of Trustees, at the Second Annual Abbot’s Table fundraiser. Years before, when Ferguson’s company dedicated a conference room to him, the tribute described Giles as a “man for all seasons...he is an inspired leader,

a selfless worker, a compassionate friend, and an obedient member of the Benedictine Order. His leadership arises from – and is sustained by – a deep understanding of the needs of those whom he serves.”

A former history teacher, Abbot Giles also appreciated the significance of institutional history. In 2006, as he transitioned into his new role as abbot, he wrote Unto Another Generation, a history of St. Mary’s Abbey and Delbarton from 1836 to 1990.

In 2014, with the help of teacher Mike Carr ’01 and Delbarton film students, he narrated several videos (posted on YouTube) and wrote an article for Delbarton Today, ‘The Evolution of Delbarton’s Culture’. Sensing his mortality as he struggled with lung disease, he worried that people might forget significant changes that occurred in the late 60s and early 70s, when the administration decided to inform Delbarton students’ education with the principles of the Rule of St. Benedict.

Freshman initiation was ditched, jacket and tie rules amended, detention and demerits tossed, the deanery system initiated and social justice became a new focus. By giving the Rule of St. Benedict a higher profile, Delbarton created what Giles liked to call a ‘hidden curriculum’ that promoted values and learning with respect. Today, this intentional focus on leadership and character building continues to set Delbarton apart. He wrote, “This is what the parents and graduates who send their sons to Delbarton expect for their boys; that they become happy, loving, compassionate, just, effective agents for change in this world. We honor the unique Benedictinedriven culture that began in 1939, was refined for 75 years, and ultimately makes Delbarton unique.”

In his eulogy, St. Mary’s Abbey confrere Fr. Hilary O’Leary said of Giles, “He was known to the St. Mary’s Abbey and Delbarton community as a person who was always the first to affirm,

The night after he died, a tribute to Abbot Giles appeared at The Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes at Notre Dame, a sacred place next to the Basilica of the Scared Heart where community members pray the Rosary each evening.

His father was a Notre Dame graduate, Class of 1926, and Giles’ support for the University ran deep. Acknowledging this love of Notre Dame, Nick Diana ’16 led a large group of Delbarton alumni, current Notre Dame students, to the Grotto where they spelled out ‘Giles’ in votive candles, a touching tribute that surely he would have appreciated.

He ended his 2014 article with the words “Treasure Delbarton, for it is a very special place.”

The Delbarton community treasures and honors the memory of Abbot Giles Hayes, OSB, for he was a very special man.

Endowment was another top priority: Abbot Giles understood that a relatively young school like Delbarton needed to build its fiscal foundation, and he encouraged others to support this initiative. In 2014, a Delbarton family established the Abbot Giles P. Hayes, OSB Scholarship Endowment Fund in tribute to him.

Generous benefactors, including the alumni and friends who gather annually for the Delbarton Shooting Classic, contribute to this fund to strengthen financial aid at Delbarton.

Abbot Giles embraced the opportunity to encourage families to invest in Delbarton’s mission to educate, build character, teach leadership and encourage service to others. In doing so, he shared with them the unique vision of his predecessor, Fr. Steven Findley, OSB. Today, Delbarton ranks among the top independent schools in the country thanks to the generous benefactors stewarded

by Abbot Giles throughout his life.

His legacy lives on and continues to inspire us.

Abbot Richard Cronin, O.S.B. had a busy Holy Week this year! After celebrating Palm Sunday Mass with the DPGA in attendance, followed by their annual brunch, Abbot Richard, Abbot Elias Lorenzo, O.S.B., newly professed Br. William McMillan, O.S.B., and newly clothed novice Br. Javier Brion, traveled to Paterson to the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist to participate in the Chrism Mass.

Abbot Richard was the celebrant for the Triduum liturgies, preaching at all the liturgies, with the exception of Holy Thursday. At that liturgy, Fr. Andrew Smith, O.S.B. preached well on the significance of the foot washing as an important gesture of Christian service. Abbot Richard washed the feet of oblates, students, friends of the abbey and several monks. The Good Friday liturgy was especially moving with three students exquisitely singing a capella the Passion of St. John, according to the Vatican usage.

On April 12, Abbot Richard and Abbot Elias attended the Tri-County Women’s Achievement Luncheon at Fiddler’s Elbow, Bedminster. On April 17, Abbot Richard also attended with area clergy a meeting at the Police Academy in Morristown with the Morris County prosecutor on Police Use of Force and Officer Involved Shooting. Later that night the Delbarton Mothers’ Guild hosted its annual fashion show at the Birchwood Manor, Whippany. Abbot Richard continues as the moderator of the Mothers’ Guild.

In November, Bill and Kathy Magee, founders of Operation Smile, renewed their vows in an Abbey Church service presided over by Abbot Elias Lorenzo, OSB. Family members and friends attended the service to celebrate the couple who continue to organize medical teams around the world to correct juvenile cleft lips and cleft palates. St. Mary’s Abbey and Delbarton, which has a very active Operation Smile chapter, salute the Magees on their Op Smile mission and on their 50 years together.

Abbot Elias, in his capacity as abbot president, was busy with many things throughout the winter

months, despite the travel-impeding weather. In early January, Abbot Elias traveled to London for a meeting with abbots of the Benedictine English Congregation. Later in the month, he was at St. Gregory’s Abbey, Shawnee, OK, and the following week he attended a board meeting for Praesidium, Arlington, TX.

In early February, Abbots Richard and Elias traveled to warmer climes to attend the meeting of the North American abbots St. Joseph Abbey, St. Benedict, La. Abbot Elias even made time for a reunion with his fellow “Johnnies,” alums of the St. John’s University, Collegeville, MN. On February 9, the eve of the feast of St. Scholastica, Abbots Richard and

St. Mary’s Abbey announces with sorrow the passing of Father Benet (William) Caffrey, O.S.B. on April 9, 2018, in his 66th year of monastic profession and 60th of ordination.

William Caffrey was born on June 18, 1931 in Newark, New Jersey to Lucille Trumbauer and William Edward Caffrey. He attended grammar school at Our Lady of Good Counsel and high school at St. Benedict’s Preparatory School.

He then entered St. Vincent College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1954. His postgraduate work began at St. Mary’s School of Theology, where he completed his studies in 1958. He took further postgraduate classes in Latin at Notre Dame in the summers from 1955-1957. He then enrolled at Columbia University, receiving an MS in Library Science in 1959.

Benet made his solemn profession as a Benedictine Monk of St. Mary’s Abbey in Newark on September 17, 1955. He was ordained to the priesthood at St. Joseph’s Cathedral

in Paterson on May 31, 1958. His first mass was at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Newark on June 8, 1958.

Father Benet was a librarian at St. Benedict’s Prep for two years, and a librarian at Delbarton School – where he also taught history, Spanish, and Latin – for almost 20 years. Fr. Benet was a loyal supporter of the Delbarton tennis program, where he served as coach for a number of years. He began the Freshman Orientation Program in 1964, later creating the freshman “New Wave” photo directory in 1980. He had served as St. Mary’s Abbey archivist since 2003 and Delbarton School’s archivist since

He was a gifted writer and homilist who continued to celebrate Mass at the abbey and at St. Mary’s, Wharton; St Bernard’s Bridgewater; St Bridget and St Elizabeth in Gladstone – Peapack and Far Hills.

Most recently he served at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Bernardsville, even as he suffered the effects of macular degeneration and cancer which left him nearly blind.

He will be remembered at St. Mary’s Abbey and Delbarton School for his dedication, work ethic, and friendly, optimistic nature.

His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at 10:00 a.m., followed by interment in the Abbey Cemetery. A repast was held in the Estabrook Dining Room. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial gifts in honor of Fr. Benet to the St. Mary’s Abbey Infirmary Fund.

Abbot Elias was back in Latrobe in April for a few days to attend the dedication of two new statues for the Archabbey basilica, of Pope St. John XXIII and Pope St. John Paul II, presided over by His Eminence, Donald Cardinal Wuerl, archbishop of Washington. Abbot Elias spent a week in Rome, April 15-23, for the 125th anniversary celebration of the foundation of Sant’ Anselmo. He also led a delegation of students and teachers from the International Commission for Benedictine Educators at the jubilee festivities,

including Delbarton’s own Derek Lattmann ’19.

continues to play an active role as a member of this body, working hard for the citizens of the township. Fr. Edward Seton, as the abbey’s master of ceremonies, is thankful to all the altar servers, lectors, extraordinary ministers, sacristans, musicians, and monks for the beautifully celebrated Holy Week liturgies.

On the home front, on March 7, Abbot Elias celebrated a Confirmation liturgy at Visitation Parish, New Brunswick, NJ. He also presided at several Triduum liturgies for the Sisters of Christian Charity, at Mallinckrodt Convent, Mendham. In mid-March, Abbot Elias attended the regional meeting of the Conference of Major Superiors of Men, in Graymoor, NY. Fr. Beatus Lucey, O.S.B. after some health setbacks and a stint in a care facility, was happy to return on April 13, finally, to the embrace of the brethren. He appreciates all wellwishers, those who visited him and the support of everyone’s prayers.

Father Basil Wallace died on January 24, 2018 after a long illness.

He was born on July 30, 1932, the son of James Wallace and Catherine née Almquist Wallace. He attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Grammar School in Queens, NY, Cathedral Prep Seminary in Brooklyn, NY, Maryknoll College in Glenn Ellen, IL and Immaculate Conception Seminary in Mahwah, NJ. On August 30 1974, he made his simple profession at St. Paul’s Abbey of the St Ottilian Congregation in Newton NJ, and he was ordained there to the priesthood on June 23, 1978. He taught religion at Bishop Loughlin HS in Brooklyn, NY (1965-1970), worked in the CCD Office in the Diocese of Brooklyn designing

Javier, coincidentally, is also a graduate of Seton Hall Prep (2005) and later received a degree from Stevens Institute in computer programming.

He took up residence at the abbey in the late summer for his postulancy.

Br. Javier will continue to assist in the sacristy and abbey library.

O.S.B., of Monastery Immaculate, Ferdinand, IN. Sr. Rebecca is an experienced librarian, especially for monasteries and other religious institutes. She had been the librarian at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. The entire collection will be more appropriately suited for a monastery, and is being re-catalogued using new software and more accurate call numbers. It will eventually be re-shelved. The electronic card catalogue will be linked with the school library.

faculty update In February, Latin teacher Dr. Rachel Carlson attended the Paideia Institute’s teacher workshop on “Active” Latin at Fordham Law School in Manhattan where she learned about incorporating verbal components and teaching methods employed in modern languages in Latin.

Dean of Admissions and Head Soccer Coach Dr. David Donovan joined an NJAIS Professional Accreditation Team to visit Mount Saint Mary’s Academy from April 24-27 in order to assess the schools’s self-study, mission and practices. This past January, Donovan participated in the United Soccer Coaches National Convention in Philadelphia, PA – the largest single-sport convention in the world where he attended classroom sessions and field demonstrations designed to improve coaching and professional growth.

In April, as a member of the Morris County Professional Counselor Association Junior class guidance counselor Kelly Gleason attended the program Suicide Prevention: Beyond the Basics.

In May, Kelly attended the Youth Mental Health First Aid Course at NewBridge.

Sponsored by the Morris County Freeholders, the 8-hour training course discussed the mental health challenges experienced by adolescents, reviewed teenage development, and taught a five-step action plan for helping adolescents.

From February 9-12, Delbarton Librarian Jonathan Kelly ’99 attended the American Library Association (ALA) Midwinter Meeting in Denver, CO. This is a large meeting of professional librarians from around the country and was a great opportunity to learn about new strategies and services to implement at Delbarton. On May 10,

March 22 was a snow day for Delbarton students, but not for a team of boys representing the School at the Euro Challenge, a contest that pits groups of 9th and 10th graders against each other to define, analyze and solve European Union (EU) and euro issues. Five intrepid gentlemen, accompanied

by Business & Economics Club moderator Tom Brady, trekked into New York City to compete in the Euro Challenge preliminary round at the historic Astor House on 80th Street. The boys – Colin Sutter ’21, Dennis Collins ’21, Will Li ’21, Chase Kraeutler ’20, and Matt LeDonne ’20 – researched, studied and prepared for past three months, and Brady reported that they “delivered a fabulous presentation on the challenge of high unemployment in Spain”.

Food Drive Breaks 50,000 Pounds Thanks to the hard work and generosity of so many, the School collected 52,015 pounds of food during our Thanksgiving Food Drive, restocking Morristown’s Community Soup Kitchen for an entire year. Our goal was a crazily ambitious 50,000 pounds, and we were happy to exceed that lofty number.

Deanery Gift Drive Collects 2,600 gifts for Paterson Youngsters

On December 6, students organized in 36 deaneries executed a massive gift and toy collection using the deanery system to collect and deliver toys in boxes to the 18-wheeler parked in the bus loop. In a single day, Delbarton collected 2600 unwrapped toys, enough to provide each child with three toys in Paterson on Sunday, December 10. Parent volunteers Maureen Smart, Nancy Bezzone and Gladden Falivene were instrumental in organizing and executing the back-to-back Food and Gift Drives. We thank them, and all the current families, alumni and friends who helped us during the 2017 holiday season, proving yet again what a unique and special community Delbarton is.

Margaret Nivistich is finishing another yoga teacher training workshop/certification in June. The certification is a 95 hour Powerflow Kids’ Teacher Training which is more specific to appropriate yoga, breathing and relaxation techniques for children and teens’ developing body and minds. She also did a Red Cross cpr/aed recertification over Spring break.

Art teacher Caitlin Servilio received her Standard Teaching Certificate. Earning the certification required two years of teaching with additional course work, and supervisor/ mentor evaluations.

Biology teacher Dan Szelingowski served as a member of a Middle States Association Accreditation (ExBD) Visiting team working with Notre Dame Academy of Staten Island from December 5 through December 8. Rest in Peace, Baby Anthony On October 24, a stillborn baby boy was found at a local recycling center. On December 18, our community was blessed with the opportunity to offer a funeral for this little boy we named Anthony, after the patron saint of the day he was found. Members of Wave-4-Life, led by moderator Elizabeth Mainardi and assisted by faculty member Jesse Mazzola and Campus Ministry Director Dr. David Hajduk, worked together to organize a funeral Mass officiated by Fr. Hilary O’Leary, OSB. Students, teachers, parents and friends of Delbarton attended. Billy Shroeder ’18 delivered the eloquent eulogy.

December flew by with breath-taking speed and everyone at Delbarton crammed a lot into the three weeks. Students, teachers, parents and alumni – all got involved in celebrating the season on a campus magnificently decorated by Mothers’ Guild volunteers.

Jeremy Nugent ’18 Earns Gold Congressional Award Jeremy Nugent ’18 is a recipient of the Gold Congressional Award, the United States Congress’ award for young Americans that acknowledges a commitment to community service, personal growth and fitness. Jeremy was motivated to try for the Award because he realized that he was already accumulating hundreds of hours in service, personal development and physical fitness. In fact, he far exceeded the Gold Medal requirements. Among his other responsibilities, Jeremy volunteers as an EMT with the Madison, NJ. Ambulance Corps and now that he is 18, he plans to take the 10 hour online class that lets him to drive the ambulance he has been riding shotgun in these past two years.

Come and See This year, Delbarton parents were invited to attend three Come and See gatherings in Old Main to enjoy time with other Delbarton parents while exploring the topics of faith and values that make Delbarton such a special place. These complimentary evenings, organized by Campus Ministry Director Dr. David Hajduk included a wine and cheese social hour, a talk, followed by a discussion, coffee and tea.

On November 9, Delbarton teacher and coach Tom Brady P’23, pictured here, spoke about his upbringing in a family that emphasized gratitude. “Thanks be to God” was such a common refrain expressed repeatedly by his mother that, as a young child, he thought the phrase was all one word.

Spirit Week Does Delbarton have spirit? Is the Green Wave GREEN? Spirit Week was a three-day fiesta of fun and games on February 12-14. Day One included several new contests: team manager obstacle course, slow bike races, sumo wrestling (in hilariously bulky body suits), and Dodge Ball and Ping Pong preliminary rounds. Day Two events included a costume contest and hot bites competition, poetry slam, chess tourney, video game competition and deanery spike ball contest. Day 3 offered unparalleled thrills when the Faculty vs. Student Hoops game went into triple overtime with students leading the way throughout the hotly contested game...until, um, they didn’t. Forensics Program Produces Three State Champions In March, Delbarton Forensic Society travelled to Hunterdon Central Regional High School for the New Jersey Speech and Debate League State Championship where the team won 6th place in Debate Sweepstakes, 6th place in Speech Sweepstakes, and 6th place in overall Team Sweepstakes. “These are huge accomplishments for a team from a school our size,” says Society Moderator Martin Page. The team also produced three state champions: Jack Townsend ’19 and Alexander Luo ’19 earned first place in Varsity Public Forum Debate, and Christopher Maximos’19 is the State Champion in Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking and Impromptu Speaking.

Strategy Wins Stock Simulator Contest During winter term, the Business & Economics Club sponsored a stock market contest using an imaginary $100,000 fund and an Investopedia simulator, and Daniel Verrone ’19 won. He explains how: “I joined the Investopedia game a few weeks into the winter term. At that time, the market was going up steadily each day, and almost every stock was rising a lot. Because of this trend, I invested in some simple ETFs that tracked the Dow. This brought me up a few thousand dollars but I knew that I would not be enough to win the game. While I was looking for new things to invest in, I came across an article about how volatility was trading at nearly an all-time low, meaning everyone thought that the market was very safe. I then figured that this couldn’t last forever so I researched ways to bet on volatility increasing. I found a way to buy into volatility and basically waited. Then on February 5th, the market corrected and volatility shot up. That afternoon, I sold everything I had and didn’t invest in anything else for the rest of the game.” Verrone donated his prize money to the Interfaith Food Pantry. Good man.

Bethlehem Farm

In April, a team of students and teachers including Michael Morgan ’18, Michael Lockhart ’19, Max Alexy ’19, John Manahan ’19, and teachers Chuck Johnson and Matt White, traveled to Bethlehem Farm in West Virginia to assist in planting and renovation projects. It was a cellphone-free zone for the week, which left plenty

of time for reflection and comradery. The group also participated in and learned about the four cornerstones of the Bethlehem Farm community of service, prayer, simplicity, and community. Simplicity included foregoing the use of technology and, at times, even electricity.

Delbarton Volunteer Firefighters Patrick Banko ’19, Jack Sameth ’18 and Johnnie Sargenti ’18 were fully engaged Delbarton students this year, but never too busy to give back to their hometowns by serving as volunteer firefighters. The three boys donate their time to their respective towns’ all-volunteer companies. Patrick decided that firefighting was his calling so he signed on as one of 55 Chester volunteers to

train as a firefighter. This summer he plans to spend six weeks in the rigorous certification program. Jack joined the Pottersville fire company in Somerset County where 40 volunteer firefighters respond to emergencies.

Fr. Michael Tidd, OSB, Named 12th Headmaster of Delbarton School In September, Headmaster Br. Paul Diveny, OSB announced that he would step down at the end of the school year. At a Morning Meeting on November 10, Abbot Richard Cronin, OSB announced that Fr. Michael Tidd, OSB, on left, takes over as headmaster this July. Fr. Michael will be 12th headmaster in the seventy-nine year history of Delbarton. Delbarton students and teachers greeted the announcement with a standing ovation. Many know and admire Fr. Michael through his roles as History teacher, Forensics coach and AP Testing Coordinator. Br. Paul said, “I could not be happier about the selection of Fr. Michael to succeed me as headmaster of Delbarton. Fr. Michael has all the skills, training and experience to be an outstanding head of school. He is a master teacher, a seasoned administrator and a man of deep faith…I wish him all the best as he begins this new chapter of his life.”

Record-breaking Sleep Out in Solidarity with Homeless Youths

On Saturday night April 14, students and dads slept out at Delbarton’s 3rd Annual Solidarity Sleep Out to raise funds for homeless youths and Covenant House. April weather did not disappoint: the 80 degree temperature plummeted to the windy mid-40s by nighttime. Our goal was $65,000 – $10,000 underwrites one Covenant House resident for an entire year. Delbarton set a new Student Sleep Out record, besting eleven other schools and parishes hosting sleep outs. We had three out of the top five individual fundraisers and, while we did not quite make the $65,000 mark that night, boys refused to give up. They continued to fundraise after the Sleep Out and, by Monday afternoon, they broke through, ultimately raising over $66,000 for this very worthy cause.

Microfinance Club Invests in Small Businesses The Microfinance Club, moderated by Tom Brady, is an offshoot of the Business & Economics Club. Last fall, student microfinance investors distributed over $1,000 to small businesses located in countries ranging from Honduras to Senegal to Tajikistan using the Kiva.org platform. In a website article, organizers Brandon Feng ’18 and Jack Schaeffer ’18 wrote, “This is not to be confused with charity; loan recipients are expected to pay back all their loans, just without interest…The point of the loans is to help bolster small businesses, especially in underdeveloped countries, as their development often encourages long-term economic growth as a whole. For just $25, we can make a big difference, which is why the Microfinance Club is so important, and why it is such a rewarding experience.

Delbarton Welcomes First French Exchange Students On October 19, Delbarton welcomed its first eleven exchange students from France. Organized in collaboration with Oak Knoll School in Summit, this new initiative invites students to attend classes at Delbarton and Oak Knoll while living with host families. The young people hail from the Lycée du Sacré Cœur, a Catholic high school in Yssingeaux, France, a small town nestled in Auvergne region of France

Encore…Spring Break in France From March 6-16, eight Delbarton French students and their chaperone, French teacher Maureen Pearsall, traveled to Lyon to complete the second half of the program’s French exchange with the Lycée du Sacré Coeur in Yssingeaux. Operation Smile in the Dominican Republic Paul Spada ’18, Thomas Bizub ’19 and Cameron Krell ’20 spent their Spring Break in the Dominican Republic with Operation Smile, part of a surgical team changing the lives of young Dominicans who suffer from cleft lip and palate. Irish Students Enjoy an American Thanksgiving November 21, four students arrived from Glenstal Abbey School in Limerick, Ireland for a three-week American adventure. First stop: celebrating a traditional Thanksgiving with their host families.

The Glenstal boys toured New York City, the Statue of Liberty, Freedom Tower and the 9/11 Memorial and immersed themselves in American culture, including dining out and shopping. Exchange Moderator Fr. Edward Seton Fittin, OSB ’82, accompanied them to Washington DC to visit the White House, the Capitol and dine at The Tombs, around the corner from Georgetown’s front gates. This June, Delbarton students will enjoy the ‘Irish leg’ of the annual exchange.

Schola Concert On the evening of January 28, Schola Cantorum traveled to Jersey City to perform in the 2018 All-Male Choral Festival at St. Aedan’s Church in a concert sponsored by St. Peter’s Prep. Schola Cantorum, led by Delbarton Music Director David Blazier, and Bergen Catholic Men’s Vocal Ensemble joined St. Peter’s Prep Vox in an evening of music. The Rutgers University Glee Club also performed.

New Faces in the FAC After a long tenure as Jazz Ensemble director, Greg Devine stepped down and Delbarton was fortunate to fill the position: Nathan Eklund, a talented trumpet player with a wealth of musical knowledge and experience as a conductor, performer, and composer/arranger. Eklund is the new director of both the Delbarton Jazz and Brass Ensembles. John DiEgidio joined the music staff to direct the Wind Ensemble. DiEgidio has directed the Delbarton Woodwind Ensemble since 2012, and assisted with the Wind Ensemble and the Abbey Orchestra over the years.

AP Art Reception The annual Delbarton AP Art Exhibit debuted on January 30 at an opening reception in the Fine Arts Center. Students, faculty, family members and friends stopped by to check out the multimedia art of seven talented seniors who spent the past two years creating art to fulfill the rigorous requirements of the Advanced Placement Art curriculum.

The Delbarton Art Department opened the school year by showcasing large scale selfportraits produced by the 2018 senior AP Studio Art students.

Servant of Two Masters

In early November, three audiences laughed themselves silly at the Abbey Players production of The Servant of Two Masters.

The play was adapted for the Players by director Matt Corica from previous versions of the classic comedy originally written 300 years ago by Carlo Goldoni. Faculty member Dr. Rachel Carlson assisted Corica with the production.

A Year of Music: Choral and Instrumental Concerts Concerts in November and February featured Delbarton instrumental and choral ensembles, including the Abbey and Young Abbey Orchestras, Instrumental Concerts and Choral Concerts featuring Schola Cantorum.

In December, Delbarton hosted its annual spectacular Christmas Concert to a standing room-only audience.

Dads and Sons Grow A Row…and Serve a Meal On September 30, Delbarton students picked tomatoes at Pittstown Farm alongside their fathers and other volunteer groups for America’s Grow-A-Row (AGAR): 12,000 pounds in just under 3 hours. The next day, Delbarton boys demonstrated their community spirit by serving lunch alongside their families at the Morristown Community Soup Kitchen, the first of three dates that Fathers & Friends committed to help out at the Soup Kitchen this year.

Author Chris DeVinck Speaks at Delbarton On January 18, author Christopher de Vinck spoke at the annual Respect Life Convocation in the Abbey Church. De Vinck is the author of ‘The Power of the Powerless’, the story of his severely handicapped brother, Oliver, and the care and compassion his family demonstrated over Oliver’s thirty-three years of life.

On September 29, Campus Ministry Director Dr. David Hajduk introduced a new event: “a school-wide prayer service that focused on the beauty of God’s creation, our human and Christian responsibility to be good stewards of God’s creation and our natural resources, and the social justice issues related to the abuse of the environment.”

During an assembly in the Abbey Church, the community heard a reflection from a young Franciscan friar and author, Fr. Daniel Horan, who teaches theology at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. His talk was entitled Celebrating Creation as Members of the Same Family.

Modesty, self-effacement and focusing on the team effort factored large. He also shared wise words on how to build a career, not simply in sports but in life: “Have a process and a plan and be the best you can be...and WORK your butt off.”

Power Lunch Students of Italian Celebrate Feast of San Gerardo

Seniors in Delbarton’s AP Macroeconomics classes access so much more than a mere AP course textbook, including the Power Lunch, a super-charged meal hosted by teacher Tom Brady. On the last day in February, the group took over a popular Morristown restaurant, George & Martha’s, filling a dozen tables for a dynamic lunchand-learn experience.

Presiding over each Power Lunch table was an industry expert surrounded by a group of students enjoying the rare opportunity to listen and learn.

On October 16, Italian students from 7th, 8th and 9th grades had an opportunity to celebrate the feast of St. Gerard in style in Newark, NJ. After cappuccino and a cornetto al cioccolato from Caffè Intermezzo, the group learned about the First Ward and the Italian-American communities, then attended mass at the Church of St. Lucy’s. In the piazza in front of St. Lucy students chose from food trucks offering sausage and peppers, pasta fagioli, rice balls covered with marinara sauce, penne vodka, sandwiches with broccoli rabe and fresh mozz, and even Jersey Shore oysters. “Una bellissima festa di San Gerardo!” reported teacher of Italian Dan Pieraccini.

Hockey and Knitting: James Bucknam’s Succisa Virescit Story

DELBAR TON JUNIOR JAMES BUCKNAM’S LIFE. Sadly, several serious concussions meant that contact sports were no longer an option for James. Devastating news for an avid young hockey player.

For some, the bitter disappointment of giving up a favorite sport might leave them adrift. Not James. He took all the energy and desire he might have invested in a career as a player and channeled it into something new: teaching disabled youngsters to love playing hockey as much as he once had.

James became a committed volunteer for the New Jersey Dare Devils (NJDD), a non-profit started in 2002 (and not associated with the NJ Devils) by the mother of an autistic child seeking a physical outlet for her youngster. Today, the organization welcomes 50 eager athletes ages 6 to 28 who compete for the NJDD at the Richard Codey Arena in West Orange NJ. Supporting these special hockey players are one dozen adult coaches and over seventy-five junior/student coaches like James.

In addition to his coaching duties, James found a unique way to raise funds for NJDD: he became a veritable hatknitting machine. Why knitting? “My cousin and I made a bet...and I lost.”

The loser was required to take a knitting class, an interesting twist in the annals of bad bets. James took the class, learned to knit and quickly realized he could

monetize his new skill by producing merchandise: Hats, hats, and more hats, and 100% of his hat proceeds support NJDD. He has already donated $5,000.

With the School’s permission, on February 23 he set up shop in front of the Trinity Hall welcome booth (sagely enlisting its queen, Lorraine Petrolino, as his PR rep) and did brisk business selling his Bucky’s Beanies – each of which takes four hours to knit – for $20 a-piece. Popular colors included Green Wave green and white (booyah) and red, white and blue just in time for the Olympics.

We love this story on so many levels – philanthropy, hockey, knitting – and believe it is the perfect exemplification of the School motto Succisa Virescit: cut down, it grows back stronger.

We salute James for finding inspiration when cut down in fifth grade. He stayed connected to the sport he loves, and discovered new purpose by changing the lives of other young people. “The players benefit from playing hockey, and from working together as a team. Some of the kids even start dating each other. It’s really great,” he says.

PS Real men knit. Just ask James.

In fact, later in the day his mother Jamie did an emergency run from Chatham to deliver more hats.

Fathers and Friends hosted a record-size Night of Dialogue on November 21, where over 200 Delbarton fathers, students, and other community members gathered to discuss the concept of leadership.

The centerpiece of the evening was an interview conducted by Joe Grano Jr. ’03 with his father Joe Grano Sr. P’03, former Chairman of UBS, about his experiences with

leading others. Grano led soldiers in combat during the Vietnam War, managed hundreds of employees over a long and successful career on Wall Street, and oversaw the Homeland Security Advisory Council as its Chairman under President George

Delbarton Football, coached by Brian Bowers, faced another challenging schedule this season, and the team fought hard using a classic strategy of simple football and accountability on all levels: offense, defense and special teams. The Green Wave began the season 0-6 with losses against powerhouse schools St. Joseph, Don Bosco Prep, Pope John and, on Homecoming Day, De Paul Catholic. The following week, Delbarton earned its first win,

defeating Hudson Catholic 35-0. The Green Wave took that momentum into the next week and outplayed Mater Dei Prep, breaking the school’s 17 game winning streak on their home turf, building a 28-10 lead at halftime and hanging on for a 28-26 victory. One week later, Delbarton suffered its 7th defeat of the season, losing to Paramus Catholic 14-6 in tough contest. This set up the ultimate rematch against rival Seton Hall Prep in the first round of the

The Green Wave took a 21-0 lead at halftime eventually coming out victorious 42-7, advancing to the semi-finals against #1 ranked Bergen Catholic. Delbarton’s loss to Bergen Catholic the next week brought their record to 3-8, but players showed they could compete against the best of the state. Green Wave Football is ready to go at it again next season!

The Cross Country team, coached by Dave Sulley, began with a strong core group of returning athletes, including senior captains Ira Daly ’18, Brendan Lawlor ’18, and Jack Looney ’18, joined by talented underclassmen including Stephen Daly ’20 and Harrison Vives ’20. The team finished with a 1-3 record in NJAC competitions, scoring a

landslide victory against Montville.

The team participated in a handful of invitational meets including the Ocean State Invitational in Rhode Island, Shore Coaches Meet at Holmdel, Greystone Park Invitational, and Manhattan invitational. Although the team was still recovering from many difficult injuries, Varsity finished in sixth place out of

14 teams at the NJAC championships, seventh at the County Championships, and an impressive fourth place out of 17 teams at the CTC championships.

At the Non-public A state meet, Daly qualified for the New Jersey Meet of Champions with a scorching individual time of 16:39.

Delbarton Soccer, coached by David Donovan, had a stellar season, ending on a high note as NJSIAA Non-Public, Group A champions. Ranked #1 entering the season, the Green Wave began the year with eight straight wins, outscoring their opponents 27-3. After tying Delran 1-1 in late September, the Green Wave went on an impressive run of consecutive wins, leading into the Morris County Tournament. After a disappointing loss to Randolph in the county tournament last season, Delbarton defeated Mount Olive and Dover in very close games leading to a showdown with Mendham in the finals.

seconds left to claim the Morris County Championship title once again. The Green Wave still had unfinished business: After defeating Union Catholic and Pingry in the opening rounds of the state tournament, the Green Wave beat Seton Hall Prep 4-0 in the Non-Public, Group-A North Finals. The exclamation point on a great season took place at Kean University as Delbarton defeated Christian Brothers Academy 4-1 to secure the NJSIAA Non-Public, Group-A title. Delbarton soccer ended an outstanding season with an impressive 21-0-1 record, MCT and state titles, and NJ.com named Delbarton the Boys Soccer Team of the Year.

The Green Wave started the season 4-1 with big wins against Chatham and Morristown Beard. After a close loss in the J.P. The team played hard all season with tremendous energy, keeping opponents off guard with hounding defense. With two standout players returning next season, the future is bright for the Green Wave Basketball program.

Delbarton Indoor Track and Field, coached by Andrew Sherwood, enjoyed a record-breaking season, winning both the Morris County Relay Championship and Morris County title. At the Non-Public A State Championships, Stephen Daly ’20 won the 3200m event with a personal record time of 9:31.48, earning Delbarton’s second consecutive state championship in the event. Fellow teammates Ira Daly ’18, Dillon O’Loughlin ’18, Justin Yazdi ’19 and Paul Spada ’18 also placed in the state tournament and competed in the Meet of Champions. The team finished an impressive 3rd place at the State Championships and set four new

Delbarton Bowling coached by Kacy Kane and led by team captain Zach Ambielli ’20, finished the season with an improved 6-8 record and a collection of great matches and memories. After a 5-9 season last year, the team has started to rebuild and reload. Freshman Bradley Cavuto ’21 set the bar with a high score of 266 this season, highlighted by a 5-pin team victory over Butler High School (2460-2455). We look forward to more strikes and high scores from Delbarton bowlers in the years to come. Go Green Wave Bowling!

The Varsity Squash team (11-12), coached by Craig Paris ’82, played an extensive schedule throughout the tristate area this winter. Lead by seniors Tom MacCowatt ’18, Matt Campbell ’18 and Griffin Silverthorne ’18, the team posted strong wins over Millburn, Canterbury, Ct., Collegiate, NYC among other schools. At the High School Nationals in Philadelphia, the team finished 8th in Division 5 and an overall National ranking of 72 out of 112 teams.

Seniors Johnny Kirk ’18, Will DeVizio ’18 and Joe Cusano ’18 provided strength and support for the squad along with outstanding play from underclassmen Theo Coughlin ’20, Peter Gajewski ’20 and Adam Majmudar ’20.

In individual play, David Boyer ’19 was a consolation finalist in the NJ State Prep Tournament.

After a mild start to the winter, the Delbarton Ski team, coached by Kevin Malkin, hit the slopes ready to improve on a terrific season last year. The team finished with a record of 20-10, 3rd in the Freedom League, earning 5th seed in the State competition. Senior captain Drake Mead ’18 ranked 5th in the state, finishing 5 of 6 races in the top 5, four of which were 2nd place finishes. At the states, the Giant Slalom team turned in a solid performance finishing second to the eventual state champions. At the Race of Champions, freshman Thomas Johnson ’21 finished all four runs placing him 12 of 42 in the state. For the second year in a row, Drake Mead qualified for the Eastern High School Championships, representing the State of New Jersey.

Hockey Coach Bruce Shatel Earns His 400th Win

On Monday night, February 12, 2018, Hockey Head Coach Bruce Shatel’s Green Wave team defeated Pope John 4-1 in the Gordon Cup quarterfinals. The triumph was the 400th career victory for Shatel, who is in his 17th season as head coach for the Green Wave. Under his leadership, his team ultimately brought home the NJSIAA Non-Public A state title to cap another outstanding season for the Green Wave. Shatel becomes only the fifth coach in NJ state history to reach 400-wins.

Green Wave Hockey (23-6-1), coached by Bruce Shatel – who earned his 400th career win this season – continued the program’s illustrious tradition of excellence with a No. 1 finish in the statewide Top 20 rankings, NJ.com Hockey Team of the Year honors and its third consecutive state championship.

Delbarton began its postseason run by defeating Don Bosco 2-1 in overtime to win its eighth Gordon Cup title. After defeating archrival CBA for the third time this season in the state semifinals, the Green Wave took to the ice at the Prudential Center for a showdown with Don Bosco in the NonPublic Championship. Two third-period goals secured the victory for the Green Wave, which defeated Don Bosco 4-2.

Leading this team this season were goalie Kenny Burgess ’18, who posted a .934 save percentage with seven shutouts, and team captain Nick Siffringer ’18, who tallied 19 goals and 14 assists for 33 points. With its 13th NJSIAA state title in hand, the Delbarton Hockey program continues to build on its impressive legacy. Congratulations to the team and coaches

Delbarton Wrestling, coached by Bryan Stoll, once again showed why Delbarton is considered one of the top wrestling programs in the country. With dominating performances by returning wrestlers and impressive debuts from new members of the Green Wave squad, team depth became an asset for the Green Wave this season. Delbarton (9-2) finished the season ranked No. 2 in the statewide Top 20, winning the Morris County Tournament and District 10 title.

Patrick Glory ’18 continued his dominance on the mat, claiming No. 1 ranking in the 126pound division with a perfect 40-0 record.

Glory, NJ.com Wrestler of the Year, won his second consecutive state title, along with his fourth county, region and district title. The Princeton-bound senior finished his last two seasons with a combined 83-0 record and was a leader on and off the mat for the Green Wave.

He was also nationally ranked #1 in his weight class.

Sophomore Anthony Clark ’20 also shined this season again for the Green Wave, winning his second state title, this time in the 113-pound bracket, after taking home top honors last year in the 106-pound group. Clark also won a Morris County title, District 10 and Region 3 title during his impressive sophomore season.

Nico Nardone ’21 (106-pounds/3rd place), Travis Tavoso ’18 (145-pounds/6th place) and Cole Kreshpane’18 (182-pounds/8th place) were also state place winners. The Green Wave team won the District 10 championship, with 13 of 14 wrestlers making it to the finals and 12 emerging victorious. At Regions, 12 out of 14 wrestlers earned spots in the state championships in Atlantic City. After another successful season, the Green Wave continues to work hard to sustain and build on its impressive program.

Led by Coach Kent Manno, the Delbarton Swim team (11-1) focused on one goal coming into the season: winning the Morris County Title. With a 9-0 record leading into the Morris County Championships, the Green Wave took home first place honors with a commanding 239-point victory, winning the Morris County title for the first time since 2008. Leading the way for the Green Wave this season were Thomas Shepanzyk ’19, Jonathan Hua ’18, Max Alexy ’19, Ryan Park ’21, Justin Yang ’18 and standout freshman Jack Alexy ’21. At the Meet of Champions, Jack Alexy took home first-place honors in both the 50 free and 100 backstroke events, while anchoring the 400- free relay team that took second-place. These swimmers were honored to be named to All-State teams: 1st team – 50 yard freestyle: Jack Alexy. 2nd team – 400 yard freestyle relay: Jack Alexy, Jonathan Hua, Thomas Shepanzyk and Max Alexy.

Football Player Will Anderson ’18 Commits to Navy

On December 20, Green Wave football player Will Andersen ’18 signed his NCAA Letter of Intent to represent the United States Naval Academy Midshipmen’s collegiate Division I football program next year. On January 28, Will Andersen ’18 was recognized by the prestigious Maxwell Football Club as one of fifty “Mini-Max” award recipients from across the state of New Jersey. The criteria for this special award are Excellence in Football, Academic Achievement and Community Service. Will had an outstanding football season for the Green Wave, and was a four-year standout varsity football player. He served as team captain and his steady leadership was respected and admired by all.

Junior Swimmer Jack Alexy Ranked #1 in US

In early December, Jack Alexy ’21 traveled to Knoxville, TN as a qualifier in the USA Swimming Junior National Championships, successfully breaking two New Jersey state records in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events. Jack’s swims in the 50-yard freestyle (20.91 seconds) and the 100-yard freestyle (46.85 seconds) ranked him #1 in the country for both these events among 14-year-old males. Jack also competed in the 100-yard backstroke, clocking in a time of 49.52 seconds, earning the #2 rank in U.S. At Delbarton, Jack is an integral part of the Green Wave Swim Team, already having an impact on his team during his freshman year. Says Delbarton Swim Head Coach Kent Manno, “Jack is a very talented young swimmer who will be a valuable asset to our swim program over the next few years.”

Trey Zgombic ’18 is Morris County Scholar Athlete

On Thursday, March 22, Delbarton football player Trey Zgombic ’18 was honored as a top Scholar-Athlete by the Greater Morris County Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame at the Madison Hotel.

Football Head Coach Brian Bowers said, “A true scholarathlete, Trey has pursued his academics with a passion and purpose equal to his football excellence. Trey is universally admired by his teachers, coaches and peers for his courageous leadership and selfless personality.” Trey will play football at the College of William & Mary next fall.

The Delbarton Alumni Association’s Jersey Shore Chapter hosted its annual Christmas party on December 14 at Rella’s Restaurant and Tavern in Brielle, NJ where friends from the Shore enjoyed getting together to celebrate the season.

Class Notes: 1960 When Delbarton had boarding students, it also had an infirmary run by “Nurse Jane,” who tended to Burke Stinson after he was struck by a car on campus during a wintry morning in 1957. Stinson has established a cash award in her name to mark Nurses Week in May at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, which annually honors a team of nurses.

1986 Michael McGarrity is the new FBI Assistant Director for Counterterrorism, an appointment announced

by FBI Director Christopher Wray in January. McGarrity most recently served as the special agent in charge of the Criminal Division of the New York Field Office.

He joined the FBI in 1996 and began his career in the New York Field Office, where he investigated violent gangs, Colombian drug trafficking organizations, and international money laundering

networks. After the terror attacks on September 11, 2011, McGarrity transferred to the New York Joint Terrorism Task Force, where he investigated international terrorism matters.

1989 Curt Ritter organized Chatham Township’s second annual Out of the Darkness Community Walk, which he launched in 2016. This year’s Walk raised more than $75,000 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention bringing the two year total to more than $150,000. In addition, his annual Chatham Turkey Trot (thechathamturkeytrot.org) now in its 9th year, raised more than $27,000 for first responders and diabetes research and education this past Thanksgiving, bringing the nine year total raised to more than $125,000.

1994 Vincent Laracca coached the Hanover Tigers to the

2017 National Junior Pee Wees Championship in December. During the 3day tournament at the Johnson Controls Pro Football Hall of Fame Village, there were over 1700 players representing 70 teams across the country including teams from both Mexico and Hawaii. In a stunning game, the Hanover Tigers won 14-12 with only six seconds remaining on a ten-yard pass from Vincent’s son Marcello Laracca to MVP Caeden Burkhard.

Alex Thew in Kabul This fall, former Green Wave football player and West Point grad Alex Thew ’06 , on far right, was serving in Kabul, Afghanistan as an Army captain, HHC Commander for 2-501 PIR, and the Chief of Operations for 2-501 Parachute Infantry Regiment (82nd Airborne). They were the Theater Reserve Force located at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan. At Thanksgiving, these fellows were two months into a nine month and they sent us this group picture with the Green Wave.

Crotty ’05 Makes Cut (Again) For US Lacrosse Team The U.S. National Lacrosse team announced the 23-player roster that will represent the US in the Federation of International Lacrosse Men’s World Championship July 12-21 in Netanya, Israel and Delbarton alumnus Ned Crotty ’05 once again made the cut. This is the third world championship for Crotty who, on January 28, was inducted into the New Jersey Lacrosse Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the Mercer Oaks Country Club in Princeton Junction, NJ. Matt Oplinger ’14 is Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year

Tommy Muratore ’12 Signs With Quad City Mallards On March 22, Tommy Muratore ’12 signed with the Quad City Mallards, the ECHL affiliate of the NHL Vegas Golden Knights. Muratore made his pro debut with the Mallards after completing his senior season with the D-1 Men’s Hockey team at College of the Holy Cross.

Tommy Davis ’12: Not a Typical D-I Hockey Player A Princeton degree, a wife and two daughters...”Providence College’s Tommy Davis ’12 is not your typical Division I hockey player...” began a Providence Journal feature that appeared last September about the former Green Wave hockey player. Davis earned a history degree from Princeton University, where he played 97 games on defense, and graduated eligible to play another year due to a freshman year injury that kept him off the ice. He is currently a graduate student working toward an MBA at Providence College. Davis also is a husband and a father. He and his wife, Annabeth Donovan – who played to a first-team All-Ivy Princeton field hockey nod in 2013 – have two daughters, Esme, age 2 and Adeline, age 1.

Yale Senior linebacker Matthew Oplinger ’14, was named Asa S. Bushnell Cup recipient as the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year. Oplinger was the leader and most dominant player on the league’s top defensive team, ranked 8th in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) with just over 15 points allowed per game. He also led the Ancient Eight and was second in the country in sacks this season with 11.5. “This is a team award,” said Oplinger, the third Yale defensive player to hold the Bushnell Cup. “I am just one eleventh of the unit.”

His former Green Wave Brian Bowers said, “His attitude and passion are infectious to those around him, and there is no doubt his leadership played a major role in Yale’s championship football season.

Matt is truly deserving of such an outstanding honor!” In May, Matt headed to the Arizona Cardinals Rookie Minicamp, having earned an official NFL invitation.

’Greetings from Somerville’ Podcasts In December, Michael Somerville ’90 launched his podcast “Greetings From Somerville” after interviewing interesting people during his travels for the last 6 months to create this fun, unique addition to the online universe. In the first 3 episodes he chatted with an NFL cheerleader, prop airplane pilot and Hawaiian native...tune in!

Boo Andreas ’85 Helps With Hurricane Relief After speaking about hurricane relief at Delbarton last October, Greg ’Boo’ Andreas ’85 was back in the Virgin Islands in November helping with the cleanup. Fathers & Friends ran a clothing drive that the Salvation Army distributed, and students sent Andreas home with the Green Wave flag. Here he is at Trunk Bay on St. John, an island ’still in terrible shape’, he reported at the time. We thank Delbarton families, and our alums in Hoboken, who stepped up with bags and bags of clothes for local families, many of whom lost everything.

This February, Fulbright Scholar Adam Vincent ’12 left to teach English at a university in Caxias do Sul, Brazil for nine months.

Adam was awarded a 2016 grant to teach English in Turkey, but the program was canceled after the 2016 political coup. Prior to his departure to Brazil, he was working as an employment specialist at the International Rescue Committee and a communication consultant for the UN’s International Fund for Agricultural Development.

Santiago Robertson-Lavalle ’17 Exhibits Art

In October, the photographs of former Delbarton AP Art student (and Green Wave Soccer goalie) Santiago Robertson-Lavalle ’17 were exhibited at 70 South Gallery on South Street in Morristown. The twoman show features Robertson-Lavalle and Thomas Conroy. In his artist’s statement, Robertson-Lavalle credited Art Department Chair Diane Lopez, pictured with the artist, for recognizing and encouraging his natural talent. Robertson-Lavalle is currently a freshman at Princeton University where his art is already on display in a freshman art gallery – all five of the photos he submitted were accepted for the show. He also landed a job as a Princeton event photographer, taking photos that the University shares on its branded social media channels.

Former Green Wave Soccer Player Jared Stroud ’14 Drafted by Red Bulls Congratulations to Delbarton alum Jared Stroud ’14, drafted 83rd overall by the New York Red Bulls in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft. Stroud had a strong senior year at Colgate with four goals and school-record 13 assists, leading his team to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time.

His efforts helped Colgate beat UMASS in the first round of the NCAA tournament and he assisted on the gamewinner against Michigan, sending the Raiders to the Sweet 16. Stroud, who had 10 goals and a Colgate-record 30 assists in 82 college games, was named first team by Northeast Region by United Soccer Coaches.

Curt Ritter ’89 is Chatham Mayor In early January, Curt Ritter ’89 was sworn in as mayor of Chatham Township, NJ for the third straight year with his wife and three children witnessing the ceremony.

Polar Plunge = Wet Wig Former Alumni Association president and 2017 Hall of Honor inductee Brian ’Wiggy’ Hanlon ’87 took a dip in the Atlantic on January 28 at the 12th Annual AOH Polar Plunge in support of Catholic School Education. His bone-chilling swim raised funds for his daughters’ school (and his alma mater) Saint James Elementary School in Red Bank.

Grant Hewit ’02 and the Green Wave in Chile In March, Grant Hewit ’02 packed the Green Wave on an adventure in the Andes Mountain Range at Lo Valdez, Chile. Grant is president of Hudson-Sutler, manufacturer of custom travel goods, and admirably demonstrates the company tagline ’Here’s to the next escape’.

Spencer Furey Rows for Cambridge University…and Wins!

Spencer Furey’12 went from Green Wave Tennis to Dartmouth Rowing. Now he is earning a master’s degree at Cambridge University where he and his teammates won ’The Boat Race’, the 164-year classic rowing rivalry between Oxford and Cambridge. Google ’the Boat Race 2018’ to see exciting footage of the race that was broadcast by the BBC and witnessed by over 200,000 cheering spectators along the River Thames.

Abdel Banda ’04 and SBIG A Salute to Harvard Wrestler Josef Johnson ’14 In March, Harvard Crimson posted a tribute to former Green Wave wrestler Josef Johnson ’14. Johnson finished the season with a team-best 29-13 record, which included 24 decisions. The Crimson’s two-time captain capped off an outstanding career with 91 wins and three appearances in the NCAA Championship Tournament.

“It’s been an honor to sit in Josef’s corner,” says Crimson Head Coach Jay Weiss. “He’s...made his mark on the program with leaderships, work ethic, and friendship.”

On April 26, Abdel Banda ’04, right, returned to Delbarton to talk about his non-profit SBIG that delivers computer labs and libraries to schools in his homeland of Ghana. 2018 marks the organization’s 10th anniversary, and Banda has received a lot of support from Delbarton alumni and parents over the years.
