Larry Rancilio ‘86 President, De La Salle CollegiateDe La Salle Collegiate is dedicated to the Lasallian Catholic education of its diverse students, including the poor and disadvantaged. We are a collegepreparatory school inspired by the spirit and tradition of St. John Baptist de La Salle, where learning takes place in the presence of God. Each student is encouraged to develop his faith, character, intellect, and morality.
This mission is embodied in the school’s motto: Builders of Boys. Makers of Men.
Our faith extends far beyond religion. It’s rooted in one another and our commitment to excellence.
Recent graduates Calvin Bacall and George Gardey finished in the top 10 in the DECA category at the International Career Development Conference Competition, held in Orlando, Fla., from April 22-25.
Bacall and Gardey became eligible for the competition when they became state champions in their category: Buying and Merchandising Team Decision-Making.
The International event included 22,000 students from all 50 states, Canada, and several Western European countries.
DLS Alumni Director and part-time Business teacher Dennis Koch, ‘94, accompanied the students.
The competition included a 90-minute, multiple-choice, 100-question written exam on Sunday. Gardey and Bacall prepared by reviewing previous tests, and Gardey finished in the top 10 of the 200 teams (400 individuals) in their category.
On Monday, the team competed in the performance portion of the competition. Students are presented a scenario, and may study the written prompt for 10 minutes and then “role play” for 15 minutes.
On Tuesday morning, Bacall and Gardey learned they had finished in the top 10, and competed in a second role play. The top three teams in each category were announced as finalists on Tuesday evening.
Although they did not come home with international medals, both students said they gained so much from the experience.
“It was definitely a fun experience,” Bacall said. “I met a lot of new people. The fact that I was a finalist showed me I have the skills to succeed in anything I attempt.”
Gardey was just as enthusiastic. “DECA was a really fun experience, and helped me improve my communication skills and creativity,” Gardey expressed.
Koch said the competition and learning was “fun for these kids.” He added, “They had the opportunity to participate in an international competition and to be recognized as some of the most outstanding students in the country. This says a lot about these two young men, but it also says that we, De La Salle, produce some of the finest students in the country!“
Both boys are headed to the University of Notre Dame. Gardey, the Class of 2023 Salutatorian, plans to major in Finance; Bacall plans to pursue studies in Biophysics.
Thanks to Joe Wiles, Class of 2011, for his generous donation which helped cover the cost of the trip. DLS is grateful for his support of the Business program, including DECA, the Stock Market Club, and the Banking classes.
Nnaemeka Ikechi, Class of 2024, is the recipient of the 2023 Harvard Book Prize, donated by the local Harvard Alumni Club of Detroit.
He said, “I am very honored to be selected for such a prestigious award.”
Ikechi, who has one of the highest cumulative grade point averages in his class, was nominated by Counselor Tony Albani. Albani said that the selected student must display excellence in scholarship and high character, combined with achievement.
He said the award has been presented to a top student at DLS for the past 17 years.
The books are awarded annually in nearly 2,000 high schools around the world. Participating clubs see the Prize Books as a way to help attract the attention of talented young students to the opportunities at Harvard. The book, “Making the Most of College,” provides useful information about the college process, particularly freshman year.
Ikechi is the newly elected Student Council President for the 2023-2024 school year.
In addition to his activity with Student Council, he is a member of the National Honor Society, the Medical Club, and the Black Student Association.
Ikechi plays varsity basketball, and is on the track and field team for high jump, shot put, and discus.
He has already taken three Advanced Placement exams in Human Geography, World History and U.S. History; during May 2023, he took four exams in American Government, Biology, Calculus AB, and English Language and Composition.
Ikechi has already earned his Eagle Scout award with his local Boy Scout troop, and also the “Order of the Arrow,” a national Boy Scout award similar to the National Honor Society.
Ikechi’s college plans include pursuing a career in the medical field, and he also hopes to play college basketball.
Kim attended Warren Woods Tower High School, and her best friend was a cousin of Jerry Zaccardelli’s, also from the Class of 1975. They introduced her to Richard; Kim and Richard married in 1980.
Kim lives in Macomb Township, and her three children also live nearby.
Her daughter, Diana, a 2000 Sterling Heights High School graduate, is a competitive dance teacher for two studios and the head dance team coach for L’Anse Creuse High School and Chippewa Valley High School.
Her daughter, Lauren, a 2003 Sterling Heights graduate, and MSU grad, 2007, is a chiropractor, with her own practice in Sterling Heights; Lauren and her husband, Mauricio, also a MSU grad are parents of three children.
Paul, Class of 2010, attended Grand Valley State University (GVSU), and his wife, Alexa, is also a GVSU alumnus; they are the parents of a six-month old daughter.
Kim already has several European trips planned in 2023, and more in 2024.
Mrs. Kim Balgenorth, the De La Salle Collegiate Counseling Department Administrator since 2008, retired this June.
After her husband and DLS alumnus Richard Balgenorth, Class of 1975, passed away suddenly in 2007, Kim left her job as a District Manager for a new baby photo company. Her son, Paul, was in his sophomore year, and she needed to curtail her travel to 40 hospitals, with locations ranging from Kalamazoo, MI, to Toledo, OH.
Kim and her family established the Balgenorth Scholarship, beginning with the Class of 2009.
The Richard Balgenorth Memorial Scholarship is a tribute to the memory of Mr. Balgenorth, and his belief that De La Salle Collegiate plays a crucial role as a foundation for life-long learning. The Richard Balgenorth Lasallian Award for Higher Education aims to financially assist a graduating De La Salle senior, to continue his education at a college or university.
The Scholarship, set up as an Endowment, will continue indefinitely.
Principal Brother Ken Kalinowski, ‘84, has high praise for Kim.
“Kim is the consummate professional, willing to help everyone and ensuring all is done perfectly,” said Brother Ken. “She loves to travel, and her knowledge of that field has helped many of the faculty.”
Counselor Andrew Campbell said, “Kim will be sorely missed. Her experience is irreplaceable - she is irreplaceable.”
George Gardey, Class of 2023, is this year’s recipient of the Richard A. Balgenorth Lasallian Award for Higher Education.
Named for the late Richard Balgenorth, Class of 1975, who passed away suddenly in 2007, the award is presented to a graduating senior who displays an understanding of the importance of his De La Salle experience. The award was established during the 2008-2009 school year, to perpetually honor Balgenorth, a faithful and proud supporter of the Lasallian mission at De La Salle.
Richard’s spirit carries on today through the generous work of his wife Kim Balgenorth, who served as a counseling assistant, benefactor, and proud supporter of De La Salle from 2008 until her June 2023 retirement.
In his award application essay, written as a future father writing to his son, Gardey wrote: “Through De La Salle’s life-altering experience, it lives up to its motto of ‘Builders of Boys, Makers of Men.’ Son, I cannot stress enough the importance of finding a school that will foster your growth as a young man and provide you with the support and guidance you need to succeed. De La Salle has been a defining part of my life, and it will be the same for you.
Your education is the foundation upon which you will build the rest of your life, and there is no place like De La Salle to grow into the man God made you to be.”
The Balgenorth Award, valued at $1,000, is to be used by a student to defray expenses directly associated with his first year of college.
The Salutatorian of the Class of 2023, Gardey will be attending the University of Notre Dame, and plans to major in Finance. He chose Notre Dame as “it is the most prestigious Catholic university with strong academics and a fantastic student life."

Congratulations to Mason Collins, Class of 2023, Rhett Roeser, Class of 2024, and John Tosch, Class of 2025 – all winners of the 2023 Rising Star award for their excellence in Academics, Athletics, Leadership, and Character.
According to Counselor/School Psychologist Andrew Campbell, the three DLS nominees were selected from among applicants from five Michigan counties.
Collins, the Valedictorian of the Class of 2023, received a monetary award from the group; he is headed to the United States Naval Academy.
Roeser carries a 3.77 GPA, and is enrolled in a variety of Honors classes, including Spanish 3, and Advanced Placement (AP) courses, including Biology, Computer Science, and English Language and Composition. Roeser plays football (running back), and is a pitcher and third baseman on the baseball team. The baseball programs at several colleges, including Duke, Alabama, Michigan, Stanford, and Harvard, have expressed interest in Roeser.
He came to De La Salle from Anchor Bay North Middle School for the DLS academics and faith component. He plans to attend college and pursue a career in the medical field. He lives in New Baltimore, with his parents Matt and Christine.
Tosch carries a 4.4 GPA, and is enrolled in a variety of Honors courses. He is currently in the AP U.S. History class. This year, he earned an award for General Excellence (ranked second in his class), made the Honor Roll, and was recognized for academic excellence in English, Spanish, History, Math, Biology, Chemistry, and Theology. He plays JV lacrosse, and is on the DLS cross-country team. He would like to pursue a career in the medical field.
He attended Holy Family in Rochester, and lives in Rochester Hills, with his parents, Jon ‘94 and Kim. His late grandfather was John Tosch ‘62, and his uncles are Jim ‘95 and Joe ‘97.
The De La Salle Collegiate SAVE (Students Against Vandalizing the Environment) Club earned a 2022-2023 Evergreen Award from the Macomb County Michigan Green Schools Program.
The Green Schools program, established in 2006, awards “Green School” designations each year to schools in elementary, middle, and high schools. The program requires students to prepare an application, submitting evidence of activity in various categories, such as recycling, energy, and environmental protection.
Led by DLS Science teacher Mrs. Nina Jacks, the SAVE Club perviously earned “Green” status, as well as the more difficult “Emerald” designation. The 2022-2023 SAVE group decided to work toward the highest designation, “Evergreen.”
The Evergreen application requires 20 or more points (each activity is a point), and activities may not be duplicated.
Francesco “Frankie” Polonis, Class of 2023, was awarded the 2023 Green Advocate Award by the Macomb County Green Schools Program. Polonis received his award at the Green Schools Program Annual Awards Ceremony in late April.
Polonis, who served as Vice President of the DLS SAVE (Students Against Vandalizing the Environment) Club, was selected by a panel of judges for the recognition.
Among Polonis’ accomplishments was his leadership of the school recycling program, significantly reducing the school’s carbon footprint.
Polonis plans to attend the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and major in mechanical engineering.

Recent graduates Jonathan Opolski and Luke Garner were presented with the Brother Bernard Guzewicz Service Award at the spring honors banquet in early March.
Named for the late Br. Bernard, who served as a Christian Brother at De La Salle for many years before his death in 1985, the award represents selfless service to others.
Faculty member Ben Westphal ‘16, moderator of the DLS National Honor Society, has high praise for both students.
"Jonathan is active in school and in the community,” Westphal said. “He has embraced any task he has been given, and has done it with grace and a smile. Jonathan is an active member of our Student Council, Link Crew, and National Honor Society. He also was a member of our Varsity Tennis Team. Jonathan has taken charge in coordinating school events, and is always willing to lend a helping hand whenever asked. Jonathan is a role model for all students and a prime example of who Br. Bernard was.”
Of Garner, Westphal said, “Luke is a student who has taken the initiative and drive to help those in the community and in the school. He has been an active member in our Student Council, Link Crew, and National Honor Society. Luke was also the Rector of Kairos 51, where he made a massive impact on those involved. He is a true Pilot who displays the core values of service and respect for others. He truly embodies what is a strong representation of Br. Bernard."
The Sam and Nada Simon Foundation, co-founded by philanthropists Sam and Nada Simon, paved the path for recent graduate Michael Perry during his time at De La Salle.
The Simons have played an integral role in his development, both inside and outside the classroom. And, because of their generosity, Perry is now ready to further his education at Tuskegee University, located in Tuskegee, AL.
In early May, Perry met Nada Simon in person for the first time, and offered high praise for the impact she has made on him.
“She helped provide stepping stones for me to get through my time at De La Salle,” Perry said. “She gave me my ‘Yellow Brick Road’ for success.”
Although Sam and Nada Simon had no ties to De La Salle until a few years ago, they embody the Lasallian spirit, and have lived a life of giving back and serving others.
Advancement Director Greg Esler believes the impact that Nada has had on Perry will extend beyond his four years as a Pilot.
“I’m so thankful for the fact that the Simons have become a part of the De La Salle family,” Esler said. “They are tremendous people, and truly exemplify the Lasallian way. It’s one of the many reasons why I believe the relationship between Michael Perry and Nada Simon will last forever.”
De La Salle is forever grateful to the Simons for their support of Michael and the students of De La Salle.
On behalf of De La Salle, Sportsmen’s Club moderator Mr. Mike Jolly accepted a check for $550 from the local chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF).
Jolly said the funds will be used to support the clay target program, helping to offset entrance fees for competitions.
Several years ago, the local group, known as the “Beards and Spurs” chapter of the NWTF, partnered with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to help fund the “Archery in the Schools” program, an effort to get students interested in outdoor activities.
The group’s initial donation of $3,000 during the 2005-2006 school year was used to purchase full sets of archery equipment.
In addition to Archery and the Clay Target program, the Sportsmen’s Club also offers students opportunities to participate in other outdoor activities. Currently, faculty member John Berlin moderates the Kayak/Canoe group.
“Depending on student interest - and having moderators, we have offered fishing, paintball, fencing, rowing, and sailing,” Jolly said.
He noted that alumni have earned college scholarships in fencing and rowing, and says the University of Michigan has a competitive fishing team.
Approximately 75 students submitted at least one piece of artwork to the 2023 Annual Art and Music Showcase held at DLS in late April.
The Art students were enrolled in a variety of classes, including semester courses (Introduction to Art, Digital Video, and Computer Graphics) and year-long courses (Studio, Advanced Studio, and Portfolio).
Congratulations to Scott Grimmer, a long-time physical education and health teacher at De La Salle, and Andrew Campbell, school psychologist and a member of the DLS Counseling Department. Both were nominated by their peers for Archdiocese of Detroit honors for the 2022-2023 school year. Grimmer represented DLS at an on-field ceremony during the CHSL Varsity Baseball playoffs at Comerica Park on May 19, 2023.
“This is certainly an honor,” said Grimmer. “Many more qualified colleagues are deserving as well. It’s humbling to be chosen by your peers.”
“It is an honor to be recognized,” Campbell said. “None of the stuff I do can be done by just me. It is a team of people, not just one person. I can’t do anything without the others in my department.”
Principal Brother Ken Kalinowski, ‘84, said, “Both Scott and Andrew are true examples of Lasallian educators. ‘They touch not only the minds, but also the hearts of their students.' They are always upbeat, willing to go the extra mile, and with a generous spirit. De La Salle is lucky to have both of these professionals, and I am extremely proud and grateful for their contributions to our community.”
A native of the Buffalo, NY area, Grimmer came to De La Salle in 1988. He left in 1996, and taught at Kalamazoo Hackett High School (Kalamazoo, MI), before returning in 2006.
In addition to teaching, Grimmer has coached various DLS teams, including football and baseball. He has also served as a strength and conditioning coach for several DLS teams, including swimming, bowling, and golf, along with football, track, baseball, soccer, and lacrosse.
He was a physical education major at Brockport State in the Rochester, NY area, and earned his master’s in exercise physiology from Bowling Green University (Bowling Green, OH) in 1995.
Grimmer was a three-sport athlete in high school - football, basketball, and track, and was on the football scout team in college. He also was a long jumper.
He went into teaching because he “was always involved in athletics and enjoyed it. Teaching seemed to be a good fit.”
His son, Christopher, graduated from DLS in 2014; his daughter, Cara, graduated in 2017 from Regina.
Andrew Campbell is a North Carolina native, and attended college at Clemson University, where he majored in psychology. After college, Campbell worked in the business field for several years, coming to Michigan in 2013 as a development representative for a furniture manufacturing company.
But, he missed working with kids. He had coached a youth cross-country program in North Carolina, and was involved with youth ministry programs. He had also worked with students who were autistic.
In 2015, he decided to quit his job and pursue studies in school psychology at the University of Detroit Mercy, earning his master’s and then a specialist degree in 2018.
Campbell joined the DLS staff in November 2018, drawn by the prospect of being involved in a Catholic high school.
In addition to his counseling responsibilities, Campbell is an assistant for both the DLS cross-country and track and field teams. He and his wife, Julie, who were married in 2016, have three children: aged 6, 5, and 4.
Assistant Principal Chris Dean ‘89 has high praise for Campbell. “I cannot begin to state the value Andrew has to the De La Salle community,” Dean said. “His care for students, parents, and his coworkers is immediately evident, as is his passion for helping others. Every day, you can find him interacting with students in a positive capacity, in some way. We are fortunate to have him sharing his gifts and making an enormous difference at our school.”

Congratulations to Father Brian Meldrum, DLS Class of 2002, who was awarded his doctorate from Catholic University in Washington, DC, in ceremonies during the weekend of May 13-14.
Father Meldrum will be teaching full-time at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit, beginning with the fall semester later this year. His appointment is effective July 1, 2023.
From mid-June through late August, Fr. Meldrum will reside and serve primarily at St. Francis Cabrini Parish in Allen Park. He is also assigned to full-time priest support at Our Lady of the Angels, St. Constance, and St. Alfred in Taylor; Saints Andrew and Benedict (Detroit); St. Andre Bessette (Ecorse); and St. Mary Magdalen (Melvindale).
As of September 1, in addition to his teaching responsibilities at the Seminary, Fr. Meldrum will be assisting at parishes in the SERF Vicariate, including Our Lady Star of the Sea (Grosse Pointe Woods), St. Basil and St. Veronica (Eastpointe), and St. Joan of Arc and St. Lucy (St. Clair Shores).
Congratulations to Dr. Chris Mehall, DLS Class of 1980, who ran in the 2023 Boston Marathon on Monday, April 17, 2023, with a time of 3:45. The time qualified him for the 2024 Marathon.
He qualified for the 2023 Boston event, after competing in the January 2022 Houston Marathon with a 3:40 time.
Mehall has now run marathons in 14 states (twice in Detroit and in Chicago), and aims to run marathons in all 50 states.
He still maintains his private medical practice in Marquette, MI, but he and his wife, Linda, are regularly on the move to marathons and to visit their sons.
After the Boston run, they headed to Baton Rouge, LA, where their son, John, DLS ‘11, got married on April 22, 2023. Eddie, ‘15, married in July 2022, and lives in Wheaton, IL.
Congratulations to DLS alumnus William “Bill” Giovan, Class of 1954, named the John Conti Letterman of Distinction by the University of Detroit Mercy.
Giovan, an All-American fencer at the university, was presented the award, with members of the Conti family in attendance, during halftime at a UDM basketball game on February 5, 2023.
Conti captained the 1949 University of Detroit football team that won the Missouri Valley Conference Championship. At 6-foot-1 and 300 pounds, Conti was an Honorable Mention All-American and the biggest man in college football.
When Conti was inducted into the Titan Hall of Fame in 1984, his long-time employer, Anheuser-Busch, created the award in tribute to Conti’s spirit and charitable enthusiasm. The John Conti Letterman of Distinction Award is presented to former Titan varsity athletes who go above and beyond at work and in the community.
Giovan is a retired Chief Judge of the Wayne County Circuit Court, and continues to be a visiting judge, mediator, arbitrator, and special master.
Five De La Salle Collegiate alumni were recently guests at the Lakeshore Optimists Club Respect for Law Day on May 3, 2023, at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club.
Judge William “Bill” Giovan, ‘54, served as the “keynote speaker,” as he and his barbershop quartet group entertained guests.
He served on the Circuit Court from 1976 through 2008, with prior service for both the Detroit Common Pleas Court and Recorder’s Court of Detroit. Giovan has lectured extensively on evidence and civil procedure for a variety of judicial groups.
He earned All-American status in 1958, when the Titans finished 10th in the NCAA Championships.
Giovan regularly appears on stage with the Grosse Pointe Theatre; a member since the 1950s, Bill’s membership spans eight decades.
He also sings with a men’s “barbershop” type group, “The Forum Shoppers,” with three other legal professionals. The group usually sings the National Anthem at a DLS home basketball game each season.
The event recognizes extraordinary efforts by public safety officers, as well as citizens, as recommended by the various Grosse Pointe departments, as well as the precincts on the East Side of Detroit.
The alumni in attendance, representing their respective public safety departments and city governments, included
• Mike Narduzzi, ‘86, a retired public safety officer from Grosse Pointe Park, now a detective in the city of Grosse Pointe
• Ted Kedzierski, ‘71, Mayor of Grosse Pointe Shores
• John Kosanke, ‘84, Director of Public Safety in Grosse Pointe Woods
• Jim Bostock, ‘89, Deputy Director of Public Safety in Grosse Pointe Park
All in the family: That’s been the Mitzel Agency way for the last 100 years.
Established in 1923, four generations of Mitzels have run the insurance-based company.
Originally located in downtown Detroit, and then in St. Clair Shores, the Mitzel Agency is now in Macomb Township. The firm specializes in surety bond services, and provides insurance services and solutions to both individuals and businesses.
The company’s founder, Frank G. Mitzel, became president of the American Bowling Congress in the 1950s. He eventually turned the business over to his sons, Frank, DLS Class of 1942, and Ken, DLS Class of 1945. A third brother, Don, graduated in 1943.
The Mitzel Agency’s ties to DLS don’t come close to ending there, either.
Several more Mitzels, all DLS alumni, have been part of the family business:
• Ken’s sons, also DLS alumni, joined the family business after graduation. They are Rick Mitzel, Class of 1975, and Ron, Class of 1978.
• Ron’s son, Kevin, Class of 2011, started working at the agency in March 2022.
Quite literally, it’s been all Mitzels, all the time, at Mitzel Agency for the past century. Ron Mitzel, for one, believes it’s what separates the insurance agency from the rest of the pack.
“I think the thing that sets us aside is people call up and talk to one of us. You don’t get a service center,” Ron said. “A lot of these larger agencies, you’ll call and get an ‘800’ number or some service center that doesn't know you from Adam.”
Mitzel Agency offers a personal touch that many of the larger insurance companies can’t lay claim to. It’s similar to what the faculty and staff of De La Salle provides to its students.
De La Salle won’t ever be mistaken for having one of the biggest high school campuses in the state of Michigan. Yet, that doesn’t matter at The Collegiate. It’s because the DLS difference is all about the hands-on learning and mentoring that the teachers, through the school’s small-class sizes, are able to offer to Pilot students.
For nearly 100 years, it’s helped the school remain a premier source of secondary education for young men in the Metro Detroit area.
And, it all plays into the parallel that is undeniable between the Mitzel Agency and De La Salle, according to Kevin Mitzel.
“We’re not the biggest agency in town. De La Salle’s not the biggest school in town,” Kevin expressed. “But, they both have a name that sticks. They have a reputation. And, that’s what they maintain: a quality reputation.”
For DLS, it’s a reputation of “building” boys into men, which has readily been existent since the school first opened its doors in 1926. The Christian Brothers have had a major role in that, too.
During Rick and Ron’s time as Pilots students, they had the chance to be taught by a variety of Christian Brothers, including the iconic Br. Robert Deary, FSC, ’61, and Br. George Synan, FSC.
Br. George, who served two separate, lengthy stints at De La Salle, also taught Rick and Ron’s father, Ken, during the 1940s. He proved to be a very influential figure in the lives of numerous Mitzel family members.
“He (Br. George) had an incredible memory. Not only would he know you and the year you graduated, but he would know your entire family,” Ron recalled. “He would ask, ‘Is your sister (Linda) still at Bon Secours?’ She was a nurse at Bon Secours. I mean, he met her probably once. His memory was just unbelievable. I have a hard enough time remembering how old my kids are, let alone when they graduated.
“He (Br. George) was the most amazing person I think I ever met, and I tremendously enjoyed his European History classes.”
Br. George, for whom De La Salle's Planned Giving Society is named, was also known for being a constant presence at funeral homes – and for anyone associated with DLS (despite the fact that he never drove a day in his life).
“I once passed him on Gratiot, by 6 Mile or whatever. He was by the bus stop. When I passed by, I said, ‘Oh my God, that’s Br. George.’ So, I said to myself, ‘I’m not going to let him sit at the bus stop. I’m going to turn around and pick him up,’” Ron said. “I went around the block, and by the time I came around, he had gotten on the bus. He would sit on the bus, and just go to funeral home after funeral home. If there was any connection – like I said, brother, sister, aunt, uncle – to a De La Salle alum, he’d show up.”
The Mitzels have stayed actively involved with De La Salle since graduating.
Rick Mitzel served as the Pilots freshman football coach for a number of years, beginning in 1977. John Maronto was the head varsity football coach at the time, and he hired Rick to lead the freshman team.
Rick, as the result of being part of the football program, had the chance to work alongside a variety of notable past Pilots coaches: Ray Barr, Gary Buslepp, Mike Jolly, Bill Meldrum and Dennis Shubnell, ‘69, to name a few. Mitzel also coached along current DLS football assistant Mike Szatkowski, ‘73.
Rick remembers those years fondly.
“It was a lot of fun staying involved, even after high school,” Rick said. “At that time being in Detroit, a lot of the kids came from all over the place. You know, if you go to a St. Clair Shores school, they’re there. They’re from there. They stay there. But, at De La Salle, you had kids from all over the place. You had kids from Roseville, Utica, you name it. There was nothing like coaching at De La Salle.”
Meanwhile, Kevin and his brother, Brandon, a Class of ’14 graduate, each compete in the DLS Alumni Golf League at The Orchards.
Rick, Ron, and Kevin have also stayed closely interconnected with the DLS community through their line of work. They’ve written the insurance policies for a multitude of Pilot alumni and faculty and staff members over the years, including former DLS French teacher and assistant principal Evo Alberti.
Alberti was one of Ron's favorite teachers.
Interestingly enough, Mitzel Agency was in charge of the insurance plan for the commercial knife-sharpening business that Alberti ran on the side along with his father.
Through their various ties to De La Salle, Rick, Ron, and Kevin have each formed lifelong relationships with numerous individuals who have been affiliated with the school at one point or another.
For instance, Ron – still to this day – meets with fellow members of the class of 1978 on the last Thursday of each month. Meanwhile, Rick, for the longest time, would get together with classmates of his on a near monthly basis to play cards.
Ron attributes the long-lasting bond he has with his classmates to the shared appreciation they have for the sacrifice their parents made to send them to DLS.
“All those guys have that same appreciation, knowing they could’ve gone to school for free but their parents decided to pay for their education. And, it’s not always easy to make that sacrifice, especially nowadays with the cost of tuition,” Ron expressed. “So, I think that has something to do with the tight-knit nature of the alumni base, too. Kids appreciate what their parents do for them, sending them to a school like De La Salle.”
You don’t have to be in Michigan to realize the strength of the DLS alumni base, either. The De La Salle brand is one that truly transcends time and place.
Just ask Rick Mitzel, who had a chance encounter with a DLS alum all the way in Glendale, Ariz., while attending the College Football Playoff national semifinal game between Michigan and TCU.
“My son (Steven Mitzel) and I were standing in a long line of people, and the guy behind me and I just struck up a conversation. We started talking about where we each lived. I said I lived in St. Clair Shores, and he told me he lived on 13 (Mile) and Harper. He proceeded to then ask me where I went to school, and I told him De La Salle. And, he went, ‘So did I,’” Rick commented. “So, here I am in Arizona, at a game of 100,000 people, and the guy next to me says he went to De La Salle.”
The reach of the De La Salle network is certainly significant, and it carries plenty of value for years after one graduates from the school.
“In the real world, when you run into someone and it comes up that you went to De La Salle, sometimes I feel like that’s more impactful than saying you went to the same college together,” Kevin said. “Because of being a De La Salle grad, you’ll instantly form a connection. It’s just a different community of people that you deal with through the De La Salle network.”
The De La Salle community is a close-knit one that looks out for one another and has a genuine care for each other's best interests. And, the same can be said about Mitzel Agency and how it treats both its smallest and biggest clients.
It's helped the insurance agency thrive for 100 years. And, with the guarantee of the Mitzel family personal touch, there's little-to-no doubt that the family-run business will continue to succeed headed into the next century.
Drew Beesley, Class of 2016, and Paul Manuszak, Class of 2017, received the honor for their outstanding high school and college careers.
They echoed each other’s thoughts, saying their success comes from having a strong foundation with their families and faith.
“It’s a mixture of everything,” Beesley said. “I’ve had a great foundation with my family in the way I was raised, going to great schools and the culture I was around. It’s really a formula for success for me, and with my faith on top of that.”
Upon learning he would be inducted into the CHSL Hall of Fame, Beesley said, “It felt very surreal, but it’s an absolute honor to get that kind of recognition. I never thought I would have gotten to this point; I give all the glory to God. Things worked out the way I wanted it to.”
He added, “My story is still ongoing, and I have more to do.”
The DLS brotherhood stands out for him. “I’ve always been welcomed back,” Beesley said. “DLS always welcomes back its alumni, because we are all Pilots and we are all family.”
Beesley’s younger brother, Will, graduated with the DLS Class of 2022, and a younger brother, Mike, is still in grade school.
DLS physical education teacher Scott Grimmer was the freshman football head coach when Drew was a first-year student, and recalled “what turned out to be a very talented football class. Drew emerged immediately as a leader among his peers.”
These days, Grimmer sees Beesley training in the weight room with current DLS students, and “once again demonstrating a pathway to success just by displaying his work ethic and dedication in the weight room.”
Grimmer added, “I am very proud of Drew for his tremendous athletic accomplishments that are still accumulating, and I am also proud of who he is as a person.”
As a junior on the De La Salle football team, with Beesley playing both offense and defense, DLS won its first state championship in school history in 2014.
His accolades at DLS include three-time All-Catholic selection, All-County Honorable Mention, two-time first-team All-County, All-State Honorable Mention, first-team All-Metro, second-team All-Metro Detroit and first-team All-East.
Beesley received 10 Division I scholarships, a Division II scholarship and a preferred walk-on opportunity. His goal was to play at the highest level of football offered and that was as a preferred walk-on to Michigan State University. He was a captain at MSU his final year.
He earned both a bachelor’s degree in Economics and a master’s degree in Leadership and Coaching.
Beesley played in the XFL for the San Antonio Brahmas for the 2023 season, and was the XFL's highest-graded defensive player, according to Pro Football Focus (PFF) - 90.7. He was also recently named to the All-XFL Defense.
Paul Manuszak played lacrosse for DLS and then at the University of Detroit Mercy (UDM). He was a first-team All-MAAC (Metro
Atlantic Athletic Conference) selection and also a MAAC Long Stick Midfielder of the Year, earning both distinctions in 2019 and 2021.
Manuszak said he is extremely honored to be a CHSL inductee. “I am very blessed and honored to be joining an elite and select company of athletes,” he said. “Just to have played in the CHSL, one of the best high school leagues in the country, brings me much gratitude and pride.”
He said his faith continues to play a strong role in his life. “The thing that separates this league from any other in Michigan is that we are united in our Catholic faith,” he said. “We compete fiercely against each other. However, belonging to this league reminds us that at the end of the day, we are all united in Christ, and that is where our true identity comes from.”
Manuszak’s four years at De La Salle and the people within its hallowed halls hold a special place in his heart.
“I am blessed to have attended De La Salle and to be a part of that family, to this day,” he said. “I attribute all of my success to my parents, my siblings, my various coaches, and especially Lacrosse Coach Mike Jolly, who has mentored me and who has been a great friend throughout the years.”
Jolly is thrilled to see Manuszak receive the honor.
"Paul Manuszak probably puts together the pieces of the Hall of Fame nominee puzzle better than anyone I know: skill, athleticism, passion, knowledge, leadership, faith, academics, humility, character, and a heart for others,” Jolly said. “And, these pieces all fit together seamlessly.”
He said Manuszak made a great impression on others while at De La Salle.
“We recognized these qualities when Paul first came to De La Salle, and have only seen them steadily grow ever since,” Jolly added. “Congratulations, Paul. I am so blessed to have coached you, and to still have you and your family in my life."
Manuszak was a recipient of the UDM Athletic Director's Honor Roll (2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022), and MAAC Academic Honor Roll (2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021). He was also a three-time MAAC All-Academic Team selection (2019, 2020 and 2021).
Manuszak graduated with honors from the UDM College of Engineering. According to Jolly, 25 percent of Division I Lacrosse programs do not allow their players to major in Engineering, because of the time demands of the curriculum.
“That is one of the many good reasons Paul chose to attend UDM,” Jolly said. “He was able to follow his chosen career path.”
While at De La Salle, he was a three-time All-State selection. He earned first-team All-State accolades as both a junior and a senior, and was named to both the All-Catholic and All-Macomb
County teams three times.
As a senior at DLS, Manuszak produced 19 goals along with two assists, and won the Mike Jolly Award for the top Catholic League Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete.
Manuszak has two older brothers who are also DLS alumni: Stephen 2002 and Joseph 2011.
Receiving the award helps to bring back many great memories of DLS for both Beesley and Manuszak, especially the importance of their faith.
Beesley said, “There were a lot of situations where I felt like I worried when it didn’t need to be worried about. Give it over to God. Keep the faith, because God has a plan for you.”
Manuszak is leaving the United States in August, headed for Belize, in Central America, where he will serve as a missionary, teaching school at a Catholic junor college. His volunteer work is through SOLT, Society or Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity.
The Class of 1973 celebrated its 50th with a June 3 event. Out of 162 graduates from the Class of ‘73, 70 attended the reunion, 20 are deceased, 37 were unable to attend, and 35 could not be located.
The Class of 1963 is planning to gather at the Detroit Yacht Club on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, for its 60th reunion.
Mike Schefke is organizing the day, which begins with a noon cash bar, followed by a luncheon at 1:30 p.m.
Interested alumni may choose from the New York strip steak, chicken parmesan, or salmon filet main courses; an appetizer and salad are also included.
Reservations and payment are due no later than August 13.
