The College community has elected its new senior student leaders for 2017. Next year the College Captain is James Biviano (Edwin’s House) and the two College Vice-Captains are Leon Lymbouris (Mark’s House) and Aaron Trusler (Leo’s House) The Principal Mr Peter Houlihan congratulated the three young men, who were outstanding in their presentations. He said that in the written applications and interviews these young men all spoke of the importance of the De La Salle community to them and what it has meant to them during their tenure at Malvern. “They are articulate, mature and responsible young men with a keen sense of what our College stands for and are great role models for their peers. Mr Houlihan said the boys were selected from an impressive range of candidates who nominated for the roles. The remaining House Leadership positions will be announced later in the year.

Welcome to the September issue of Roll Call magazine.

Once again we feature a range of stories featuring the tales and talents of our current students and Old Collegians. This issue includes stories of success in sport, academia, the arts, the community and the professions. We feature news of the Gleeson brothers, whose different career paths see them working them working across the table in the world of football.

We follow the dream run of Tim Ashford, whose name went down in history last November as a Melbourne Cup winner owner. There is also news of the College’s many community events, including its annual Race Day at Caulfield, the Father’s Day Breakfast and the ever popular Grandparents Day. Again we feature news of our reunions and the Old Collegians Football Club. We hope you enjoy our September issue.

MISSION ACTION DAY For the third year in a row the College community raised more than $100,000 for the annual Mission Action Day (MAD) Walkathon. This year funds will be disbursed across a range of projects including: Coolies, Luurnpa Catholic School in Balgio Hills (see story on page 4), Bomana Lasallian High School in Papua New Guinea and Pakistan. The capital works program in Pakistan includes:

— Installing a new immersion pump for water supply for whole school. Includes boring, pipes, plumbing, wiring etc — Desks for primary classrooms where students currently sit on chairs with books on laps — Contribution to teachers’ salaries – a crippling cost for the Brothers

From the Principal Dear Old Collegians, It’s terrific to be able to write to you again in our second edition of Roll Call for 2016. A great deal is happening in the College as we continue our focus on innovation and improvement in all areas. As ever, at the centre of all our endeavours – just as when you were a student here – is the focus on providing a human and Christian education.

Unsurprisingly, the 104 years here at Malvern have seen extraordinary changes. Indeed, in the 332 years since St John Baptist de La Salle opened the first school in Reims, Lasallian education has reached 81 countries and currently educates in excess of one million students. Perhaps the one constant among so much transformative change remains our underlying values.

This is the theme I’d like to explore a little as I believe it enables all our students, past and present, to achieve what they have and more importantly, to become fine men of principle and character. Given this Roll Call highlights some significant achievements among our Old Collegians I’d like to provide some analysis of the impact of De La Salle students’ time at Malvern.

I was fortunate to attend a recent course at a Lasallian university exploring the founder’s educational vision, his key ideologies and the philosophies underpinning his approach to teaching young men. This provided an invaluable source of broadened knowledge and depth of understanding around the critical issues which ensure St John Baptist de La Salle’s fundamental themes remain at the core of all our operations here at Malvern. Remarkably, these lessons for the first Brothers have clearly visible practical application to the roles of all in our school today.

De La Salle College must continue to develop its living heritage, ingrained in our founding – but of critical importance – continuously adapt to be responsive to today’s realities. Our obligation to the young men entrusted to our care is to provide a holistic education for life in contemporary society, an education which is engaging, rigorous and inspiring. This is shared in an environment where the inherent dignity

of each child is recognised and he feels valued, safe, encouraged and there’s always someone who believes in him. I’m hoping that you, as an Old Collegian, agree De La Salle creates opportunities to live these ideals practically for service, leadership and the betterment of others. The achievements of so many of our past students lends credence to this belief.

We educate for a life filled with promise – providing challenge, extension and support, where each pupil is encouraged to identify, develop and use his skills. Through this partnership we cultivate viable pathways for all. One of the key messages from my recent studies was that Lasallian education is all about community. St John Baptist de La Salle saw it as critical and was unambiguous in his insistence that the early Brothers share a community and the early students must be enabled to establish a keen sense of involvement, engagement and belonging in their community to best succeed. And so it is at Malvern in 2016 and in speaking with many Old Collegians in my three years as Principal I believe the vast majority of you experienced a similar awareness of identity and direction which shaped your life and helped you succeed.

The holistic education at De La Salle is part of a bigger picture around character, citizenship, respect, decorum and civility – respect for self and others, for the school, owning and upholding our agreed expectations and standards to establish a sense of belonging to our community.

In working with current students here, in the various positive messages we receive from the community and in attending reunions, Old Collegians Football Club functions and in discussions with Brothers and past students I am convinced the Lasallian charism shared with so many generations at De La Salle, Malvern has a profound and lasting impact.

Whether it’s Old Colls reliving their glory days at a reunion, the induction of the latest Legends at the Football Club or just conversations with the 2016 Year 12s reflecting on their time

here, there remains a common theme.

That spirit of brotherhood – together and by association – is real, tangible and I believe shaped the identity of countless young men passing through this great school. The Malvern student’s classroom has always been characterised by warmth, humour, interaction and rigour, supporting our boys to go on to great achievements and great relationships.

On a separate theme, perhaps the most significant advancement this year is the development of the Master Plan. Now in its final stages before formal adoption, the plan involves significant renovation at Kinnoull but of greatest impact, a major building program on the Tiverton Campus on High Street. Among the key objectives in the Master Plan are a curriculum model which underpins the Master Plan Vision, emphasising 21st century learning, innovative pedagogies and ensuring the model is capable of accommodating future change and development. The traditions of the Lasallian ethos are present and evident and we’re including facilities to enable the growth of the House based system of pastoral care across both campuses. A distinctive campus heart is planned at both Tiverton and Kinnoull as well as green landscapes across both campuses for active and passive sports and recreation. Building structures and landscape environments will be designed to create a strong College identity and dynamic and sustainable learning environments which accommodate the innovative teaching and learning.

GRANDPARENTS ARE SPECIAL Almost 100 grandparents joined the primary students for the recent Grandparents/Special Person Day at the Tiverton Campus. Travelling from far and wide, the visitors included some Old Collegians, returning to the College to see their grandchildren.

Grandparents were treated to a walk down memory lane as they were given demonstrations of contemporary learning as well as a concert presented by the students, which featured the Cat Stevens song Remember the days in the old school yard. College Leaders, Charlie Joseph, Liam Ramirez, Tom Ponissi and Will Wright were guests of honour at the day. Principal Mr Peter Houlihan spoke to the group about his own memories of his grandmother and his mother in her role as a grandparent.

The grandparents were overjoyed by the day and loved every minute of being able to spend time with their precious grandchildren at school.

A REMOTE LEARNING EXPERIENCE Recently De La Salle senior applied learning students were invited to work with a remote indigenous community at Balgo Hills, Western Australia.

The nine students and three staff flew to Alice Springs before embarking on the 12 hour drive along the Tanami Track, which is the most direct route from Alice Springs to the Kimberley. The students were excited to make a start on a long list of jobs they were to complete at the Luurnpa Catholic School, including landscaping, furniture building and repairs, felling dead trees, constructing sustainable vegetable gardens and repairing cyclone and barbed wire fencing. The convenor of the trip, Mr Tim Hogan, said the young men worked exceptionally hard to complete the work, but more importantly they made time to involve themselves in the community, initiating sporting activities with the local indigenous children before and after work. “One of the many highlights was the invitation to share time with the male

elders teaching young the art of dance, body painting and traditional tool and weapon making,” he said. “The respect

and understanding the boys gained from the Balgo trip is invaluable.”

REPRESENTING AUSTRALIA IN THE WORLD SERIES IN JAPAN

Community Award

Sean MacDonald (Year 10) was selected as part of this year’s Australian 17 Men’s 2016 FIBA team representing Australia first in China and then in Spain at the World Championships in July.

Sean, who joined The Melbourne Tigers as point guard this year, previously played for the Oakleigh Warriors where he took out a number of Most Valuable Player Awards. He is also a member of the De La Salle ACC basketball team, taking out the Best Player Award for the last two years and in the running to take out the award again this year.

The coach of the men’s Australian Under 17 squad Mark Watkins said he was very excited about the 12 players

selected to represent their country.” The team came in seventh place out of the 16 teams, losing in the quarter finals to Spain. The team was selected from a group of athletes from right across the nation, some of whom are based at the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence in Canberra at the AIS. Sean was one of only three Melbournians selected for the team, alongside Patrick Bines from Caulfield Grammar and Mate Colina from Lake Ginninderra College.

Sean hopes to be offered a scholarship to play College Basketball in the US when he graduates from De La Salle in 2018.

YEAR 10 STUDENT COMPETING IN THE WORLD SERIES IN JAPAN Ben Fierenzi (Year 10) was selected earlier this year to represent Australia in the Under 17 Little League World Baseball Series held in Japan in July.

After the success in the Senior League Under 17 National Championships in Lismore earlier in the year Ben was selected as one of the 20 athletes to join the Southern Mariners on the Asia Pacific leg of the World Tour.

Before heading off to Japan Ben joined the team in a preparation tournament in the Philippines. The Little League World

Series is the most prestigious junior Baseball tournament in the world.

Year 12 student Stephan Kokkas has been awarded a Community Service award by the Member for Higgins, Mrs Kelly O’Dwyer, at this year’s 2016 Higgins Community Christmas in July ceremony.

Stephan received the award for his contribution to helping homeless people in the city and setting up a science and programming club at De La Salle College. The Awards recognise local residents who volunteer their time to contribute to the local community.

Experiencing Spring St

Ben’s first game against Japan, the host nation, was a sellout with over 25,000 people attending.

The Australians went down to Japan sufferering a second loss but made a miraculous recovery to beat South Korea 4/3.

Congratulations Ben and the four other boys chosen from the Cheltenham Baseball Club to represent Australia.

Declan Martin (Year 11), was fortunate enough to complete a week long work experience placement with the Victorian Minister for Small Business, Innovation and Trade, the Hon. Philip Dalidakis MP. At one stage, Declan was with the minister for 15 hours straight attending two meetings, one press conference, one awards ceremony, and one electorate visit, during which time he met the Premier Mr Daniel Andrews (pictured above).

YEAR 9 ‘IN9UIRY’ IN THE CBD It was early on a Monday morning when the steps at Federation Square steadily filled with blue and gold blazers as students arrived for the first of College’s Year 9 City Experiences. The energy amongst students was electric, and by the time they set off for the day the boys were buzzing with excitement and enthusiasm.

The Year 9 students were in the Melbourne CBD for a four-day City Experience, carrying out investigations as part of their ‘In9uiry’ project. The topics chosen by the students to investigate were vast and varied. The In9uiry project, which aims to develop 21st century skills, investigated a range of issues such as homelessness in the city, tourism and Melbourne’s main tourist attractions, the connectedness of our public transport system, the availability of cycling paths and related facilities, problems caused by birds, street art versus graffiti, and architecture and high-rise development.

The In9uiry Coordinator Mr Heath Tregear said it was an exciting time for students and the College. “The City Experience is a core component of our Year 9 In9uiry program,” he said. The culmination of the program was an exhibition of project results which were

on display at an expo evening in Term 3.

“The City Experience has been for some students a life changing experience and one they will remember for a long time.” He said the boys had developed skills which they can apply to a range of situations as well as their studies back in the classroom.

And the good news was, as the week progressed, the energy and enthusiasm levels of the boys remained high. They

ended up self-proclaimed experts on the city, and their growing confidence held them in good stead as they met new people; joined tours; conducted surveys; interviewed workers, shoppers and tourists; and made adjustments to their itineraries. “All in all it was an incredibly productive week and the boys were brimming with stories about the genuine experiences they had encountered in the city.”

YEAR 11 DEBUTANTE BALL This year’s annual Year 11 Debutante Ball saw 38 De La Salle College students making up the Debutante Presentation Set. The Debutante Set, many of whom met whilst participating in the Year 10 Dance Program, was this year open to other schools for the first time.

The Debutante Ball Coordinator Mrs Joy Bew said it was extremely pleasing

to work with such a great group of young adults. “The young men and women did themselves, family and friends proud,” Mrs Bew said. “As you can see from the photograph they all looked stunning.”

This year Mrs Joan Ferguson, College Chaplain and MC, and Mr Kevin Hunter received the Debutante Set. “It is always pleasing at the conclusion of the formal

dances, performed so well by the Debutante Set, to see the smiles on the faces of the participants and especially their families. In keeping with tradition at the end of the evening the members of the Debutante Set presented their mothers and grandmothers with a rose.

Mrs Bew said this is always a very special part of the evening for mothers and sons alike.

DE LA SALLE MUSIC ON THE ROAD

Italian Scholarship

De La Salle music students took to the road again this year for the annual music tour. This year more than 50 students from across the College visited schools in and around Beaufort area. Regional primary schools, some with populations of less than 20, were treated to the talents of the De La Salle music students. Music Coordinator Ms Cindy Frost said the camp was an overwhelming effort for the students who performed every day of the weeklong camp to audiences young and old.

“Music Camp this year, as always, was a deeply enriching experience for music students and audiences alike”.

COMMUNITY PROGRAM WITH YARRAVILLE SPECIAL DEVELOPMENT SCHOOL For the last two and half years the College’s VCAL students have been working closely with the Yarraville Special Development School as part of its community outreach program.

The VCAL students have formed strong personal relationships with the Yarraville students, all of whom have special learning needs. Every fortnight the students visit Yarraville and work alongside YSDS students on a range of improvement projects to enhance the environs of the school. Supported by funding from the Catholic Education Commission, the students have so far completed garden beds, an outdoor storage unit and timber silhouettes which they are converting into colourful mosaics. On their fortnightly visits, the VCAL students also join in a range of activities with the Yarraville students, some of whom are nonverbal, including basketball, bike riding, yoga and art.

The program has been well received by the teachers at YSDS who can see the benefits of having the De La Salle students visiting on a regular basis.

Senior VCAL student Peter Haines has been part of the program for the past two years and believes it has had

Raphael Canty (2015) has been awarded the Colin McCormick Memorial Scholarship to further his tertiary studies in Italian. The scholarship, set up to honour the memory of Colin McCormick, foundation Professor of Italian Language and Literature at the University of Melbourne, is for Year 12 students to continue their studies in Italian. Raphael was presented with his award at Loyola College last month.

Raphael is studying a Bachelor of Science at The University of Melbourne and a Diploma in Languages majoring in Italian.

He intends to use the scholarship to complete an exchange in Italy as part of his degree, perhaps to the University of Bologna.

“I am very excited to put these funds in the bank to start saving for this trip, which I look forward to start planning soon. It’s a goal I have now to be able to communicate and study in the language in two years’ time,” Raphael said.

Raphael said he was extremely honoured and overjoyed to win this scholarship. “It is wonderful to be recognised for all my hard work and endeavour in Italian at secondary school and also all of the hard work of my Italian teacher Mrs Kath Marino.

Father’s Day Breakfast The College gymnasium was filled to capacity recently with more than 500 fathers and sons gathering for the annual Father’s Day Breakfast. Guests started the day with tasty bacon and egg bagels, healthy fruit platters and fresh coffee for the dads. The Principal Mr Peter Houlihan said the breakfast is a great community event which provides fathers and sons with the chance to spend some quality time together. “The annual Father’s Day Breakfast, now in its third year, is a signature event for the College community.”

The guest speaker for the morning, Mr David White from the Ladder Foundation welcomed the opportunity to raise awareness of youth homelessness and the importance of organisations like Ladder which assist with mentoring services. Ladder was founded by AFL players to empower young people aged 16–25 to break the cycle of homelessness by harnessing the support of the AFL industry’s profile, networks and players. The Foundation is reliant on the support, not just of the AFL, but the wider community.

A Day at the Races More than 150 members of the De La Salle community celebrated in near perfect conditions in the Peter Lawrence Room at Caulfield Racecourse recently for the annual De La Salle Day at the Races. The day which is the signature event on the Parent Network Calendar, raised more than $20,000 for the College. Organiser and President of the College Parent Network, Cate Robertson, said the day was an overwhelming success and the biggest event of its kind. “The race day just keeps growing every year with more and more parents joining in the festivities

of the day,” Cate said. MC Jim Russell entertained the guests with his light hearted commentary and auctioneering.

The Principal Mr Peter Houlihan, his wife Cate, and the President of the Old Collegians’ Association Mr Tony McIlroy were among the special guests who enjoyed a wonderful afternoon. The bonds of brotherhood

By Kerry Martin Brothers Jeffery (1982) and Michael Gleeson (1986) graduated from the College four years apart. Both completed their studies at The University of Melbourne, one in arts and the other law, before embarking on their individual careers. Jeffery, a barrister, is the Legal Counsel for the AFL Tribunal and Michael, an award winning sports writer with The Age, have managed to negotiate a professional relationship outside the bonds of brotherhood.

As the Legal Counsel for the AFL at the Tribunal, a role he has held for the last eight years, Jeffery presents the case to the AFL Tribunal against players who have been reported. “Some of the more memorable cases have included the Barry Hall case, where he copped a heavy suspension for nearly knocking Brent Staker’s head into the third row of the grandstand, the Buddy Franklin/ Ben Cousins collision and the Jack

Viney hearing and appeal from the incident where he jumped in front of a marauding pack and the pack came off second best.”

Jefferey also appeared on behalf of the AFL in a number of other matters, including the Kurt Tippett ‘draft dodging’ case, the Melbourne ‘tanking’ case and drug related matters, including the Essendon saga.

Meanwhile as a sports journalist with The Age, Michael could potentially could find himself having to report on matters before the AFL Tribunal.

Michael says his professional relationship with his brother has to be delicately navigated. It means that essentially on those issues in which Jeffery has a role he doesn’t cover. “We

don’t exchange information but the assumption would be if I were to write on a topic he was involved in, that we had done so. Obviously that has meant that in large part I had to stay out of the Essendon drugs story, the Adelaide Kurt Tippet case and Melbourne tanking. But that is OK.” Jeff jokingly adds that the only time they talk football is when he needs to give his little brother advice on the game; “For a football writer, he understands very little about the game. “ The two brothers grew up in East Burwood with their parents and sister, Debbie. Jeffery graduated Dux of his year in Year 12. He was admitted to The Bar in 1992 and appointed as Senior Counsel in 2007. He practises

extensively in the Supreme Court of Victoria, and the Federal Court of Australia and also appears in the High Court.

Michael studied arts and landed a job in the media after a conversation with a sub editor in a pub. Now a celebrated sports writer he has published two books, won two Cricket Victoria Writer of the Year awards and in 2014 won the The Grant Hattam Award for his insightful feature on football and religion.

At the College the Gleeson brothers shared the same interests: cricket and football. Both dabbled in the game, neither of them spectacularly.

Michael played drums and loved Bruce Springsteen while Jeffrey was more of a ‘new romantics’ kind of guy. “My passion for Bruce became a little allconsuming and created a tension at home as Jeff was into new romantic music, the fashion stylings of Duran Duran and synthesized rock of Flock of Seagulls. Jeff still enjoys singing Take on Me in the car,” Michael said.

The two have very fond memories of their times at the College and share a strong admiration for former English teacher and Year 12 Coordinator Barry Dyball who sadly passed away in 1995.

Barry taught the Gleeson brothers English in Year 11 and 12. “Everybody loved Barry, he was gently inspirational.

I remember being frequently a little spellbound by his meandering monologue about a novel or a poem,” Jeff said.

Since De La Salle the two brothers have carved out successful careers for themselves in the media and the law. Their work takes them around the world. Jeffery was appointed as an international arbitrator ruling over matters in London and Abu Dhabi, and completed his post articles in London with Theodore Goddard. He has also been an Independent Commissioner Enquiring into Sexual Abuse in the Melbourne Catholic Archdiocese as well as the Chairman of the Insurance Committee of the Commercial Bar Association of the Victorian Bar.

Michael has covered the athletics for The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald at the Moscow, London and, more recently, the Rio Olympics. It is not surprising that the two have a long list of career highlights.

Jeffrey says a highlight of his career is running trials in the Supreme Court and Federal Court as well as appeals to the Court of Appeal and even the High Court.

“The sports law has been interesting.

The Essendon drugs saga had many different aspects to it and appearing on behalf of the AFL in the hearings of the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Sydney last year was fascinating.”

Similarly Michael has had some amazing career highlights. “Sitting at dinner with Mohammad Ali in London was a particular highlight,” he said.

Michael said.

The brothers agree that De La Salle has left many legacies: a good education, good mates and a strong sense of social justice. “De La always had a strong social justice focus, which was for me, over and above the academic results, the school’s most redeeming feature,” Michael said. They still have a close circle of mates from the College with whom they spend their holidays both here and overseas.

When Jeffery and Michael are both in Melbourne they find time to get together with their families, Michael’s two boys, Joe (13) and Raff (10) and Jeff’s five children, Alex (20), Zoe (18), Tom (16), Meg (16) and Zac (12).

Before moving into sport Michael worked as a crime writer at the Herald Sun and during that time he wrote a book on the Jaidyn Leskie murder, which he says was imaginatively titled The Jaidyn Leskie Murder. “I spent a month in Moe when the boy went missing and it was the most bizarre and extraordinary period.”

His second book was Cakewalk – The Story Inside Collingwood’s 1990 Premiership.

“Covering Sally Pearson win the 100 hurdles was great and watching David Rudisha win the 800m and break the world record still remains the best run I have seen – even better than Mo Farah’s 5k 10k double.

That said seeing Usain Bolt beat Justin Gatlin, a twice-banned drug cheat, for gold at the world championships in Moscow was pretty amazing,” DE LA SALLE COLLEGE LASALLIAN ROLL CALL

‘Richo’ calls it for Rio

By Kerry Martin When the Olympics got underway in Rio de Janeiro last month an Old Collegian was part of the team covering the Olympic stories for Australia. Former Stawell Gift winner and sports commentator Jason Richardson (1986) was an integral part of Channel 7’s Olympic media team as the studio anchor for 7TWO’s coverage of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Richardson, who is well known to Australian sporting audiences through his on-air and screen roles for Channels 10, 9 and 7 and Foxtel’s TVN as well as his radio presence on SEN, said he was fortunate to get the role as part of the Channel 7 Olympics media line up.

“It was an honour to be selected to be part of the Olympic coverage team and something I have worked hard for since joining the media”, he said.

Before his career in sports media, Richardson was an accomplished athlete in his own right, winning for three

consecutive years at Stawell. In 1993 he won the Stawell Gift off a mark of 7.5 meters. The year before he won the ‘novice’ 100m and in 1994 he won the back markers 120m invitation – becoming one of only two athletes in the history of the Stawell Gift to win in three consecutive years. Two years later he won at the 200 meters at the 1996 British Professional Championships.

After graduating from De La Salle Richardson studied at RMIT and Deakin and worked in marketing for an eyewear company before starting his own brands importing and retail business.

During his own successful sporting career Richardson had a number of dealings with the media, and quickly developed a passion for it.

“My big break was probably a couple of appearances on Channel 10 ‘Sports Tonight’ back at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, which started the ball rolling and opportunities developed from there, and somehow I have carved out a career in media since.”

Jason admits there is no formula to being successful in media. “There is no secret formula, just old fashion hard work and a whole lot of luck.”

“The development of social media has allowed media presenters to be very accessible and we receive immediate feedback on every single word we say.”

While he thinks there are many benefits of being so accessible he admits it does come with its disadvantages. “I would love to share some of the comments I get, but presume we have a G rating! It is brutal, but I’ve learned to develop a very thick skin and have a laugh with it.”

“Covering the elite events are the highlights, so hosting the TV coverage of the Melbourne Cup, Australian Open Tennis, and of course the Olympic Games are things that I will always cherish.”

Richardson hosted the 2010, 2011 and 2012 Autumn & Spring Racing Carnivals in Sydney and Melbourne, featuring Caulfield Cup and WS Cox Plate meetings.

Richardson says as a young man he loved sport, friends, sport, socialising and more sport. He represented the College in athletics in both the long jump and sprint events and he was a member of the ACC football and cross country teams throughout his time at De La Salle.

From green and gold to blue and gold He is still very much part of the De La Salle community and regularly attends reunions and contributes to fund raising events.

“I have so many wonderful memories of De La, and the biggest accolade I can attribute to the school and its community is that it gave me my seven best mates; thirty years on we are still best friends.”

“Since school we have drifted off to various parts of the globe, yet always had an incredible strong connection, and that is a wonderful testament to the culture that nurtured at my time at De La Salle.”

Married to 1998 Commonwealth Games 5000m gold medalist Kate Anderson, who represented Australia at the 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, they have three daughters, Ruby, Milla and Cleo.

During the Olympics Jason worked around the clock as the studio anchor for the 7TWO channel for live Olympic sports, covering all aspects and cheering on some Aussie gold medals.

He said his release is being with his daughters at the end of a busy day.

“To wind down after a hectic at work I enjoy cheering on my three daughters in their very busy lives.”

De La Salle College teacher Kaila Hutchinson (nee McKnight) has firsthand experience of being at the Olympics, as a competitor.

In 2012 she was one of the Australian Olympic Athletics Team at the London Games.

“De La Salle left me with some great legacies. “Mateship, good health, fairness and respect...all with a huge dose of fun!”

Later this year you can follow Jason on a range of sports programs on Channel 7 during the Spring Racing Carnival and the tennis coverage including the Australian Open and the Brisbane and Sydney Internationals, as well as his regular stints hosting Saturday Arvo Racing, Get On, Correct Weight and live racing on Channel 78. He also hosts Off to The Races with Kevin Bartlett on SEN radio.

“I remember when I put my green and gold uniform on for the first time that all the hard years of training and sacrifice had paid off,” Hutchinson said.

“I was fulfilling a life-long dream by competing for Australia in the Olympics.

“In London my heat was the second of three and I had competed well enough, placing fifth, to automatically qualify for the semi-finals. The semi-final itself came two days later and was held during an evening session, where I was competing in front of a packed 90,000 seat stadium.”

There was much excitement in the stadium when the 26 year old accountant from Stony Creek made it through to the semi-finals.

“I had a sense of calm as I stood on the start line ready to race and it truly was an amazing experience when that starter’s gun was fired; a dream come true. I had toiled to the best of my ability, but missed making it through to the final. “ “It is hard to believe it has been four years since and only recently after stepping out of the sport, do I now look back with fondness and feel proud of my achievement at London. I was so excited watching my friends and other athletes complete in realising their own dreams in Rio.”

A cup full of dreams

By Kerry Martin In just a few weeks on the second Tuesday in November, the country’s dreams will once again ride on the back of a single horse as it crosses the finish line at Flemington. Last year’s Melbourne Cup winner Pirates of Penzance, a 110–1 longshot ridden by a female jockey, secured its place in history and made one Old Collegian a very happy man.

Tim Ashford’s (1996) dream came true when last year’s Melbourne Cup winner Prince of Penzance crossed the finish line making him and a group of close friends part owners of a Melbourne Cup winner.

For Tim the dream started in 2001 in a pub in Edinburgh while he was working in Europe for a couple of years. Across the bar he met Sam Brown, a fellow Melbournian who had a keen interest in race horses. Sam and Tim became good friends and eventually Sam introduced Tim to his wife Amy.

Flash forward a few years – Tim is back in the Melbourne working for Minolta managing their major accounts portfolio and living in Ormond with Amy and his two daughters Sophie and Lucy.

As frequent country race day visitors Tim and a group of his close friends decide to pool some cash to invest in a race horse. With a modest investment of $5,000 each they backed their hopes on local trainer Luke Oliver who promptly delivered wins with two of their investments. “We thought we had this sport conquered,” Tim said.

With a little bit of cash remaining from the pool they decided to buy 10 per cent of a yearling out of the Karaka sales in New Zealand. “It was a pure last throw at the stumps – we didn’t even know if he would make the racetrack or not.” With no money left for more horses they were prepared to get out of the game if he was no good.

That horse turned out to be Prince of Penzance and the rest is history. Since then Prince of Penzance has won over $4.2 million from 24 career starts.

His Melbourne Cup win last year with Michelle Payne on board was his biggest race to date and his first Group One, the Melbourne Cup. At dream odds of 110 to 1 Pop, Tim’s nickname for his horse, made his backers very happy and Michelle made history becoming the first female jockey to ever win the Melbourne Cup.

As Roll Call goes to print Pop is preparing for the 2016 Spring Carnival which so far looks like it is gearing up to be a good season and even another cup dream come true.

Last year however wasn’t as smooth sailing. The lead up to last year’s cup was not without its problems. “Having missed the cup field the year before by two places, significant time was put into working out what needed to happen in order to make the cup field.”

Suffering from colic, Pop almost died on the operating table, but after a strong performance on Derby Day he was included in the field for the cup. “When the final fields were announced chaos ensued, from there everything seemed to be falling into place for us, with the barrier draw giving us a better than average chance to run a top ten spot and be in the money. Being at long odds (110–1) there was no weight of expectation, and we were left to soak up the festivities of cup week.”

On the day of the race Tim recalls a surreal moment. “I arrived at Flemington with my wife and, walking along the ‘avenue of honour’ where the names and colours of previous Melbourne Cup

winners are immortalised, looked down at my feet and thought...’what if?’

Before the race Pop looked untroubled by the enormity of the occasion. “He had come off a huge run in the Moonee Valley Cup 10 days earlier but looked absolutely spot on when in the mounting yard.”

“Trainer Darren Weir tried to temper our enthusiasm citing a ‘top 10 finish would be a good result’, but Michelle Payne’s face failed to hide the fact that she held a quiet confidence that Prince was a good chance of featuring in the finish.”

When the horse missed the start, Stevie Payne’s crucial drawing of barrier one meant we could recover, work our way back into the race and secure a spot on the fence mid field.

“Watching from the mounting yard, we saw the horses flash past the finishing post the first time and saw that the horse was in a good rhythm. The horse finally came off the fence at the 800 and rounded the final turn searching for an opening. When a gap appeared at the 600, Pop burst through and powered to the line. That last 400m felt like an eternity; we knew he could be strong to the line but we were up against the world’s best.”

“Still today, I am still searching for the words that appropriately describe the feeling after the horse crossed that line first. We had dared to dream, but never in our wildest thoughts did we think we could win! We have just won the Melbourne Cup!” “After the race we were ushered onto stage for the cup presentation, and then down to the winners bar for a celebratory champagne where I was joined by my mum and uncle Barry (Barry Lyons) (1966). The Chairman of the VRC Michael Burn invited the owners and our families up in the committee room where we continued our celebrations. It was at this time I received a call from Shane Hyland (1996) and several other former class mates who were beside themselves with excitement at the events. It was then that the enormity of the win sunk in.

“I feel extremely fortunate to have been part of such an incredible moment, and have enjoyed sharing my own experience with people and hearing of the experience of others from that day.

Why they bet on it, why they didn’t, what it means to them, I really enjoy hearing all of these stories.”

Tim is particularly proud that his horse was ridden by a female jockey. “As the father of two daughters, Michelle’s story is an important one that I can call on to demonstrate that gender should not be a barrier to anything they set their sights on,” Tim said.

Tim and his syndicate still part own Pop. “He had a single run in Adelaide in May, finishing second in what was an extraordinary run.” In July he visited Warrnambool to see Pop working on the beach and then back at the stables, and reports are good.

“They say Pop is bigger and stronger than ever before, and ready to defend his title in the 2016 Melbourne Cup.”

Tim is still a regular at Caulfield races where he catches up with his old De La Salle mates. “I am very fortunate to remain very close with the group of friends I have from my days at De La Salle.”

“We are hopeful Michelle recovers in time to join him again for the 2016 season...

The Melbourne Cup win has also allowed us to expand our stable with several other prospects either racing or working their way to the track.”

Growing up Tim spent a lot of time around the Old Collegians Football Club with his father, cousins and uncles who were all heavily involved. “My father played for the Old Collegians and wrote the club history Pride and Premierships.

Our family home was in Ormond, and I was to go on and play my football with Ormond Football Club along with a number of other former De La Salle students from 1996. It made the DLS v Ormond encounters very competitive.”

We all wish Tim and Pop the best of luck for the Spring Carnival.

Pinball wizard When Marcus Sezonov (1986) is not hard at work as a business analyst for Telstra he is busy maintaining and enjoying his rare collection of pinball machines.

Marcus started collecting Pin Ball machines more than 20 years ago after he had finished his studies in business at Monash University.

“I bought my first machine in 1996 for $800, it was an early 70s baseball themed game called Grand Slam. It was one of the first things I bought when I moved out of home.”

Marcus had always been interested in games and the artwork of the older pinball machines in particular appealed to him. “I collect the older pinballs as the art is better and the play is more classic,” he said.

“When I purchased my first machine I was so proud of it I put it in the lounge room for people to admire when they visited. After my first pinball purchase I realised I could probably fit another machine in the kitchen, and then one in each bedroom,” and soon he was hooked.

Soon the collection started to take over the house and after he got married his wife encouraged him to build a cabin in the backyard so he could move the collection out of the house.

Since then his collection has increased substantially. “My wife wishes she hadn’t let me build such a big cabin – and I wish I had built a bigger one!”

His cabin is called the Rosstown Retro Pinball Arcade. Rosstown is the old name for Carnegie where he lives.

Marcus currently has 15 pinball machines in his collection which he estimates to be worth around $50,000.

“My collection spans the years from 1959 to 1991. “While most machines are from American companies such as Bally, Gottlieb and Williams,” he also has some rare and different machines from Italy and Spain .

“Not many people know that Atari also had a go at making pinballs. They didn’t make many but I have a very collectable Superman by Atari too.”

Marcus buys most of his machines on eBay. But knowing the right people in the business means he can get hold of something that is rare and wouldn’t be sold to just anyone. “I trust the seller, which has caught me out many times as it never quite works as they say it does. But I do expect I have to do some fixing anyway when I get them to bring it up to my standard.” As long as the playfield and back glass are in good condition other issues can be fixed.

“I really like the artwork on this one. It is of a girl trying to clone herself in a futuristic machine. The aim is to get the thermometer on the back glass to 37 degrees which is the temperature of the human body — and thus bring her clone to life. The play is fairly basic, but tough to master, with just a bell for sound. It really takes you back to another era when you play it.”

“My wife wishes she hadn’t let me build such a big cabin – and I wish I had built a bigger one!”

Marcus thanks De La Salle for the great friends he still has today. “My friends from De La all have a mindset to work hard and have fun at whatever you do.” A good philosophy for life indeed, Marcus believes.

He is a member of the Bayside Pinball Club that runs official competitions, gets pinball enthusiasts together to fix and restore machines and organises fun family pinball nights.

His favourite machine is an old electromechanical (it has mechanical score reels rather than electronic displays) pinball by D. Gottlieb & Co from 1977

ALEX GOW ON TOUR

Helpmann Award for best Australian playwright Celebrated Melbourne songster Alex Gow (2005) has just completed a successful month-long Australian Dreamer’s Tour with Dan Kelly. Neither artist is a stranger to the road, having both toured relentlessly with their respective bands over the years, however, this is the first time they have both toured solo together. Gow, who with his band Oh Mercy released their fourth album, the ARIA award winning When We Talk About Love, was excited to hit the road. “Dan Kelly is precisely the kind of person you wanna tour with. Mostly I wanna be near Dan in case those four horsemen take a trot. He’s the kind of guy you could really turn to, post apocalypse. He’d stare into the abyss and teach it how

to play guitar just like Mark Knopfler.

In addition Dan and I have a lot in common. We like music, and we have hair that goes upward as our motor skills go downward. Furthermore I have always admired Dan’s songwriting, guitar playing and singing. Dan writes romantic, surreal and bittersweet songs.

Songs I love. He taught me to try and do the same.” The month-long tour paid homage to some Australian heroes and friends who set the musical troubadours on their merry way with their songs and stories. OPERA AUSTRALIA DEBUT FOR OLD COLLEGIAN

Next month Michael Petrucelli (2006) will be making his Opera Australia debut in the role of Stephen Goldring in Sydney Opera House – The Opera (The Eighth Wonder).

The opera, which follows the turbulent story of the building of the Sydney Opera House, will transform the Opera House Forecourt into an opera stage for the first time ever. Since his debut as a classical tenor with the Victorian Opera, Michael has performed the roles of Giuseppe in La Traviata, the Sandman in Hänsel und Gretel and the White Rabbit

in Alice’s Adventures in Opera Land, and has covered the roles of Bruno in I Puritani and Antony in Sweeney Todd.

Last November he performed alongside international cabaret sensation Meow Meow in Victoria Opera’s Seven Deadly Sins. After graduating from The University of Melbourne with Honours in Music Performance in 2012, Michael completed two years as a Developing Artist with Victorian Opera whilst completing a Master of Music in Opera Performance.

Dan Giovannoni (2004) has taken out the 2016 Helpmann Award for Best New Australian Play for his latest work Jurassica which also earned him a Green Room Award earlier in the year.

Jurassica, which was directed

by Bridget Balodis for Red Stitch Theatre, is an emotionally moving play that examines one family’s migration experience from Italy to Australia. Giovannoni was nominated for the same award (with fellow NIDA graduate Amelia Evans) for Cut Snake, which also won Best Emerging Writer at Melbourne Fringe and was shortlisted for the Rodney Seaborn Playwright’s award. He won the Malcolm Robertson prize for Two by Two in 2011 and won a Drama Victoria award for the education resource he created for Cut Snake. Mad as a Cute Snake received the RE Ross Trust Playwrights’ Script Development Award in 2014. His other plays include Bambert’s Book of Lost Stories (Barking Gecko Theatre Company), Turbine (Malthouse Theatre), and Wrecking (Fat Boy Dancing). He has worked as a guest artist, teaching artist and artist-in-residence with companies including Back to Back Theatre, St Martins Youth Arts Centre, Arts Centre Melbourne and AWESOME Arts.

An honourable life

Michael Kennedy (1944) celebrated his 90th birthday earlier this year surrounded by his five sons, all Old Collegians, his daughter, his grandchildren and many friends, including two of his former classmates. Despite his age Michael’s memory is better than most half his age and he was gracious enough to invite Roll Call to his Ormond home recently to share some of his recollections of his days at the College.

Michael started at De La Salle College in Grade 3 in 1935. He was a good student and loved Maths and Physics and was the Dux of his year twice. He modestly says he was a better student than a sportsman, yet he captained the Second XVIIIs. He enjoyed the College Cadets which may have been his motivation for joining the Air Force after he matriculated in 1943. “I especially liked my time in the Cadets as it gave us a chance to interact with the Brothers whom I hold in the highest esteem,” Michael said.

He vividly remembers his first night after being called up as an air force volunteer.

“We spent our first night sleeping on the ground at the MCG before going off to training school in Shepparton.” He subsequently spent two years in the air force as an air traffic controller before deciding to study pharmacy.

“My first job as a pharmacist was at the Royal Melbourne Hospital but I didn’t enjoy hospital pharmacy as I knew I wanted to work with people.”

He moved into retail pharmacy, first at the St Kilda Junction. “As a good

Catholic boy I didn’t know what had hit me; one customer asked me if I owned a gun and when I replied no he said ‘I’ll get you one’. St Kilda then was full of rogues and gangsters.”

While at his St Kilda pharmacy he met his future wife Margot, also a pharmacist. “I actually fired her before I realised I loved her,” Michael said.

“When I bought into the business we couldn’t support a third pharmacist so I had to let her go.” Luckily for Michael she forgave him and they married in 1954.

The young couple settled in Mt Waverley where they had six children.

Peter (1973), a storeman; Robert (1974), a Japanese Consulate Officer; Brendan (1976), a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Sydney; Caroline, recently retired; Christopher (1979), an industrial relations manager; and Matthew (1981), a chef based in Metung.

Michael is very proud of the fact that his wife Margot is the only woman to graduate from De La Salle. “Margot was a keen history student and Br Damien allowed her attend classes at Malvern.

She matriculated from De La Salle in Australian History.

It is obvious that Michael values education. Graduation photographs of his family adorn the walls in his Ormond home which he lovingly refers to as “the rogue’s gallery” .

Michael, who is an Honourary Life member of the De La Salle College Old Collegians’ Association, believes it is more important to give back and has devoted many hundreds of

hours contributing to the life of the College. He was a founding member of the Old Collegians’ Asssoc. when it reformed in 1946, serving as President and supporting fund raising efforts to develop the Kinnoull campus.

“We used to have three or four general meetings a year and meet in the old classrooms in Stanhope Street. We even had preferential voting during meetings.”

The main event of the calendar was the Blue and Gold Ball which was held at the St Kilda Town Hall. “It was by far the biggest ball of the year. We didn’t have emails so we would send out newsletters for every meeting and all of our events.”

Michael worked as a pharmacist for 43 years in various pharmacies until he retired from his East Bentleigh pharmacy in 1988.

Sadly Margot passed away two years ago but Michael’s sense of fun and enthusiasm for life continues. This nonagenarian has survived cancer, a heart attack and two armed robberies but the De La spirit lives on. He still enjoys the races and regularly visits his daughter and grandchildren in Sydney.

Michael recalls some advice once given to him by Br Damien Harvey, “Whatever you do, do something in your Parish.”

Michael has heeded the advice and is still involved in his parish, St Aloysius, where he has been Chair of Parish Council and is a Special Minister.

From the President of the Old Collegians’ Association A recent milestone for the De La Salle community and many Old Collegians was the 2012 centenary of our College and celebration of the many Brothers who have contributed so much to many lives.

In the coming months, the international Lasallian community will be preparing for another significant date in 2019 – the 300th anniversary of the death of St John Baptist de La Salle.

De La Salle families will know well just how significant the story of the priest from Reims has become in the lives of millions of Lasallians and how much his work has influenced even those around the world who have never heard the name de La Salle.

My wife and two of my daughters are teachers so the visit was a poignant opportunity for me to reflect on de La Salle’s role as the patron saint of Christian educators.

After being declared a saint in 1900, he was recognised in this important role for his writings, his love and affirmation of the young men in his care and his extraordinary legacy.

Many aspects of traditional education can be traced to de La Salle, including the format of the classroom, and his writings about care and attention for young people are relevant even today.

Leaving behind a comfortable and privileged existence as a priest, close to his large family, he chose the responsibility of a fledgling community of teachers and the care of poor young people around France.

I was fortunate to be taught by Brothers in each year of my education from Grade 6 onwards and the names of Brothers, Romanus, Mark, Cormac, William, Calixtus, Colin and Edward come to mind, along with Br Tim, who I got to know whilst a member of the College Council. In my adulthood, through keeping in contact with some of them, I have come to appreciate more fully their commitment and humility.

Visiting Italy on a family holiday a few years ago, I was lucky enough to visit Casa La Salle in Rome and to meet Br Peter Gilfedder. Home to the Superior General, Br Robert Schieler and many Brothers, the property includes a

Australia is represented on the international committee preparing celebrations for the 300th anniversary commemoration in a few years. I expect Roll Call will include more reports on the preparation in the months to come.

Class of 1996 Reunion If I had one piece of advice for Year 12 students, it would be to make sure that you turn up to your 20-year reunion.

Sure, all the guys around you at school are terrific people and they’re probably pretty interesting too, but you’ll all be much more interesting when you’re 37 than you were when you were 17. Now that I’m there, I certainly hope that I am.

All sorts of things can happen to you in 20 years: qualifications, jobs, travel, marriage, divorce, children, growth of hair on your face, loss of hair on your head. Short guys come back tall, quiet guys have lots to say and everyone comes back happy to see each other.

it all together and to the staff from our days who came to see what had become of us, including Graeme Lawler, Adrian Matarazzo, Jonathan Hewett and Norm Stewart.

him, Callan Mason and Rob Loft still like each other so much that they have become brothers-in-law and John Satchell has still got that nonchalant thing going for him.

We had a great time and there was so much to talk about. In attendance were a high-flying media personality, a Melbourne Cup winner, the Premier’s most senior lawyer, real estate agents, teachers, business owners, town planners, psychologists, security guards and mortgage brokers. A lot had changed and some things hadn’t: Michael Calmer still corrects other people’s spoken grammar, Mark Schurmann is still talking up the Bulldogs in a way that makes you feel convinced until you think about it again later, Simon La Greca is still so polite that he enquired whether I remembered

I’m sure they say this to all the boys, but Principal Houlihan told us that we’d scored the biggest turn out for a 20-year reunion that they’d seen in a while. If it’s true, a lot of credit goes to Troy Buntine for setting up a closed group on Facebook last year to re-build connections and get some momentum happening in advance. So there’s my advice for the guys who are 19 years out. And finally, we paused to think about friends who couldn’t make it: Anthony Molan, Bryan Johnston, Andrew Jean, Adam Bischof and Jeremy Warwarek. We miss you.

Class of 2006 Reunion The 2006 class recently assembled at a popular watering hole to reminisce and share stories from their time together at the College and the 10 years that have passed since graduating from high school.

For most, there have been numerous highlights and achievements to speak of as we have all matured and grown wiser during our first decade out of school.

Some of these talents were on display throughout the evening with Michael Petruccelli being coerced by a couple of confident members of the ‘06 class into performing an Italian opera piece.

This was a real treat for all in attendance and was no doubt the highlight of the evening in conjunction with Nathan Roberts’ assortment of infamous noises.

Other colourful characters from the class included Timothy Arbon, who treated us all to a very amusing welcome speech.

Tim had to be peeled away from Mr Lawler after giving him a full run down of his last 10 years and that of everyone else there on the night. Tim proceeded to speak very well considering and made mention of a few notable past students and their current place of employment. The likes of Anthony Hale,

Patrick Monaghan, Alex Roberts and Chris Lobo were all lucky enough to receive a mention.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the College and especially Trish Woodman for putting on the evening. It can be a very uneasy event to commit to, but once there we all immersed ourselves in conversation and the memories flowed for the remainder of the night. All present would agree it was a fun night to be a part of and a great opportunity to catch up with those you would not regularly see.

Class of 2011 Reunion On Friday 22 September, old classmates gathered to celebrate the Five Year Reunion for De La’s Class of 2011. Reflecting on the night, I realised that every conversation had essentially picked up where we left off on that final goodbye gathering post exams in the Performing Arts Centre on the Tiverton Campus.

It’s inevitable that people lose contact, gravitate to others and progress. But what resonated with me this night was that everyone who attended was working towards their dreams.

Many had undertaken undergraduate and postgraduate studies, finished apprenticeships and taken on trades, opened their own businesses, travelled the world and planned for the next chapters in life. No matter the path, we were all genuinely interested in what our fellow classmates had to say – which highlights the true Lasallian

spirit of this fantastic alumni. In many ways we hadn’t changed at all. Despite maturing and taking on very different paths since our school days, our collective spirit and sense of humour hadn’t disappeared. Banter was flying left, right and centre just like old times.

Stories from the many swimming carnivals, athletics days, surfing camps, lightning premierships and the like were shared with great fondness.Everyone I spoke to expressed strong interest in attending the next reunion with the hope that some of our old teachers would come out of the woodwork and share a beer with the class of 2011.

This five year reunion really conveyed the inclusive community spirit and the values ingrained at De La Salle College.

Thanks to the organisers and those who attended, it was a fantastic event.

Class of 2015 Reunion Returning as “old boys” for the very first time, graduates of 2015 were reunited. In the lead up to the event I questioned the legitimacy of reuniting after only nine months, but already I could see that the freedoms of the adult world had been tightly embraced. It was great to see boys starting to make up for years of strict above the collar regulation. Jude was most expressive with an impressive Mohawk, standout!

Others seemed to take to adulthood with a real sense of maturity, spotting a highly refined ‘Tav’ sipping on a glass of Shiraz made it clear that times were changing, and fast. Hearing how well my fellow graduates are faring made me truly proud. I cannot wait for the next big gathering when we reconnect as mates once more. Time cannot

break the bond we have formed over our journey, let’s not forget our De La roots! It was also great to catch up with Mr Houlihan and some of our teachers who made an effort to come along. And a big thank you to Mrs Woodman who works behind the scenes to make it all happen. See you all next reunion.

Matthew Wong (1996) is a senior business analyst with ANZ Bank.

Simon Carolan (1996) is the Venue Catering manager for AAMI Park.

Ben Corin (1996) is the client services manager at Scienceworks.

Shane Hyland (1986) runs his own business in McKinnon, Hyland Sportswear.

Simon La Greca (1996) is a fund manager for AMP Infrastructure Development.

Nicholas Tyrrell (1997) graduated with his PhD in Climatology from Monash last year and is working in Finland with his wife Penny.

Daniel Stow (2009) married Karina Anthony at De La Salle Chapel, Oakhill College in Sydney. Karina and Daniel were both working for the DLS brothers as Youth Ministers when they met.

Michael Duncan (1976) is a Technical Procurement Advisor for the International Aid Development Program in Tonga. He is married to Barbara and has two children Alexander (26) and Helene (18).

Andrew Proy (1991) has moved with his young family and wife to Sydney where he is stationed in the Navy.

John Le Marshall (1963) is part of a Research and Development project at the Bureau of Meteorology looking to optimise satellite observation in an effort to improve weather forecasting. He is also Chair of the Technical Advisory Committee and Industry Advisory Committee for the GOES-R satellite program.

Ben Ellul (2009) graduated with a Masters of Architecture from Monash University and is working as a Graduate Architect at Nixon Tulloch Fortey Architecture Pty Ltd. Peter O’Shea (1976) is a multiinstrumentalist, teacher and performer who works mainly in the Celtic scene.

His versatility has seen him act in feature films, produce music books, record CDs and teach violin, mandolin, guitar and cello. He has won two Golden Fiddle Awards for his music.

Tony Saliba (1986) works in the film industry as a corporate video producer and location manager.

Tony Heasly (1976) runs his own business, AGH Plumbing Services, working mainly in the Glen Waverly area.

Graeme Wilson (1986) works for Victoria Police in the forensic sciences area.

Brian Teague (1986) is a mechanical engineer and he and his wife Letizia have two children, Robert (13) and Giulietta (11).

Bryan Russo (1986) is a paramedic with Ambulance Victoria. He and his wife have four children, three boys and one girl.

Patrick Mullaly (1986) is a Parliamentary Liaison Officer for the Victorian Government.

Justin Bourke (1976) is a QC and was admitted to the Victorian Bar in 1989. He completed a Law degree and Economics degree at Monash University and is married with two children, a daughter, (23), and a son (19). Outside of the law, Justin’s interests include yoga, the Melbourne Football Club, tennis and drinking good wine.

Anthony De Masi’s (1995) brand new show Dreamtime premiered at the Melbourne Magic Festival in June.

Rohan Laging (1997) graduated from Monash University with Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (Honours). He joined the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine as a fellow in 2012 to become an Emergency Physician. He is now a staff specialist at The Alfred Emergency and Trauma Centre and the Emergency Director (Clinical) at John Fawkner Private Hospital. He and his wife Bridget live in Elwood with their two children, Evelyn (7) and Rosie (3).

Anthony Quin (1995) lives in Sydney with his wife Amber, sons Riley (5), Angus (3) and new daughter Chloe. After a 13 year career as a Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist in London, Dubai and Sydney, Anthony moved into medical device sales three years ago, selling elective and trauma implants to orthopaedic surgeons. He was recently promoted to NSW/ACT State Sales Manager for LMT Surgical and enjoying the new challenge.

Brendan Downie (1970) retired early after a career in the automotive industry working as a Product Designer in Australia and 14 years in Germany.

Brendan now spends his time travelling and maintaining his collection of classic cars.

Peter O’Brien (1954) worked in a number of commonwealth departments including the Australian Broadcasting Control Board. Peter and his wife Val have three children and nine grandchildren. Always interested in radio, Peter has served as a presenter, board member and training convenor for a number of years at Eastern Community Broadcasters -Radio Eastern 98.1FM Croydon and can still be heard on most Mondays 12 Noon-2 pm presenting “Monday Music Showcase.”

Fr Stuart Hall (1980), pictured right, is currently Principal Chaplain and Director General Chaplaincy (Navy) and will take up his new appointment as parish priest at St Mary’s East Malvern from Feb 2017. Fr. Stuart, born in Melbourne, attended St Peter’s Parish Primary School and De La Salle College Malvern, before commencing studies for the Priesthood in 1981. In 1987 he was ordained and ministered in parishes within the Melbourne Archdiocese. He began his naval career as a Reserve Chaplain in 1991 and joined the Permanent Navy in 1994.

During his time in the Navy he had both shore and sea postings, including East Timor and the Persian Gulf. He has been the Command Chaplain for Maritime Command, Navy System Command and Director Chaplaincy Policy & Development. In December 2011 he was appointed as a Prelate of Honour by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI. He has a keen and active interest in relationship pastoral ministry and is involved with Engaged Encounter Sydney, a pre-marriage relationship program for couples.

Kel Ryan (1963) was called up for national service in 1965 and spent 24 years in the Army. After an interesting career, including as Commanding

Jason Kloszynski (1993) is married to Julia and has two children Zara (6) and Ryan (4). After six years in Sydney as General Manager of Volkswagen Financial Services Australia, they returned to Melbourne and settled in Malvern East. He was with NAB for five years as State Manager of Franchise Banking then became a Business Banking Executive overseeing a number of Business Banking Centres. He returned to automotive finance for two years as General Manager of Sales for Nissan, Renault and Infiniti Financial Services Australia and New Zealand but after almost 20 years in finance chose to start his own business and has partnered with a colleague as a Finance Partner at Thatcher Davis, specialising in residential, investment and commercial debt solutions.

Officer of 51 Battalion The Far North Queensland Regiment (51 FNQR) he settled in Cairns. 51 FNQR is based in Cairns and is responsible for reconnaissance and surveillance throughout Cape York and the islands in the Torres Straits. Kel is currently the Honorary Colonel of 51 FNQR, and is presently completing his PhD through James Cook University.

Brendan Close (2009) graduated with a Bachelor of Science and is now working as a full-time trainer at The Woodshed in Brighton.

Old Collegians Football Report More than 240 of the De La faithful descended on the Plaza Ballroom at the Regent Theatre in Collins St for the club’s inaugural Blue & Gold Ball on Saturday 20 August.

Andrew Mackintosh, Colin Glover, Tony O’Callaghan and Aaron Shields were inducted as legends of the club, whilst the dancefloor played host to multiple legends-in-the-making throughout the night. Representatives from the College present on the night included the Principal, Mr Peter Houlihan and the President of the Old Collegians Association, Mr Tony McIlroy. They were joined by a long list of Old Collegians and some current students who celebrated the Club’s success.

A big thanks to Chadstone Toyota for their support of the event, and to all of our members and supporters for making our first Ball a hit.

LASALLIANS CELEBRATE REMARKABLE LIVES Lasallians from around Australia gathered at Oakhill College in Sydney recently to celebrate the 50th (Golden Jubilee) and 60th (Diamond Jubilee) anniversaries of eight remarkable Lasallian Brothers.

Six of the eight Brothers celebrating the milestones had close connections with De La Salle Malvern including Diamond Jubilarian, Br William (Bill) Good who taught at the College and Golden Jubilarians including former Principal Br Tim Peter, former College administrator Br Gary Wilson and former teaching Brothers, Brs Denis Loft (1965) Geoff Kennewell and Gabriel O’Shea.

The celebration truly reflected the rich diversity of the Lasallian Mission, with half the Brothers having worked for yourtown (formerly BoysTown) and many having spent lengthy periods in Papua New Guinea, South Sudan and New Zealand.

A Mass, celebrated by an Old Boy of De La Salle College Malvern, Fr Brendan Hayes (1965), was held at the De La Salle Chapel in a building familiar to many of the Brothers as their training centre when they entered the novitiate more than half a century ago.

Alongside him on the altar as Acolyte was a fellow Old Boy of Malvern and Lasallian Benefactor, John Hogan (1965), who established an alumni network for Lasallians in Canberra in the 1970s which continues to flourish today.

In his homily, Fr Brendan paid tribute to the level of faith, fidelity and endurance displayed by the Jubilarians.

He said that same tenacity was shown over three hundred years ago by St John Baptist de La Salle, who faced many setbacks in his life, but never lost sight of his commitment to the poor.
