The Georgia Center for the Book is the state affiliate of the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. The Center was chartered in early 1998 with the DeKalb County Public Library serving as its host and sponsor. The Center’s mission is the support of libraries, literary programs, and literature, particularly Georgia’s rich literary heritage.

Anthropocene: The Human Epoch — How Humans Have Impacted the Planet. 2018. 1h, 26m. A stunning sensory experience and cinematic meditation on humanity’s massive reengineering of the planet, Anthropocene: The Human Epoch is a years-in-the-making feature documentary from the award-winning team behind Manufactured Landscapes and Watermark and is narrated by Alicia Vikander. The film follows the research of an international body of scientists, the Anthropocene Working Group, who, after nearly 10 years of research, argue that the Holocene Epoch gave way to the Anthropocene Epoch in the mid-twentieth century as a result of profound and lasting human changes to the Earth. Doors open 30 minutes prior to the film.

SCBWI Exhibition: Look & See

Visit the Fourth Floor Gallery in the Decatur Library during gallery hours for “Look and See: Original Artwork by Local Illustrators with Their Published Books” presented by SCBWI Southern Breeze, Decatur Library, and the Georgia Center for the Book. The show, featuring artwork by several major children’s book illustrators, will be on display from March 6—April 4, 2025. Gallery hours for this exhibit will be Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, from 1:00–5:00 p.m. ET., with the exception of March 29, when the show will be closed for a private conference.
Introduction to Measuring Impact

In this introductory course presented by Candid’s Ivonne Simms, you will learn the basics of shifting focus from your nonprofit’s activities to its outcomes. Your nonprofit does great work, but what is most important is the impact of that work. How do you demonstrate that your programs get results? An outcome-centric approach will lead to stronger program design and increased funding opportunities for your organization. This course will prepare you to draft SMART objectives for a program, identify the parts of a logic model, and report the impact on your Candid profile.

Understanding Georgia’s New K–12 Scholarship Programs

DeKalb County Public Library will partner with Harris Davis Educational Consulting, LLC, to offer three, FREE one-hour workshops for parents. Parents will learn about the educational funding opportunities available for the Georgia Special Needs Scholarship (GSNS) and the Promise Scholarship (Voucher) for the 2025–2026 school year. Each session will provide an overview of the programs, eligibility requirements, and the benefits to children. Little Love Healthcare Services will facilitate this session and guide parents and caregivers through the Georgia Pediatric Program (GAPP) benefits, eligibility requirements, and application process. The Georgia Pediatric Program (GAPP) is a Medicaid waiver that provides in-home personal care support and skilled nursing services to children 0–21 with disabilities—at no cost to their families. The program also offers an option for parents to be financially compensated for serving as their child’s caregiver.

DeKalb County Public Library will partner with Harris Davis Educational Consulting, LLC, to offer three, FREE one-hour workshops for parents. Parents will learn about the educational funding opportunities available for the Georgia Special Needs Scholarship (GSNS) and the Promise Scholarship (Voucher) for the 2025–2026 school year. Each session will provide an overview of the programs, eligibility requirements, and the benefits to children. Get your questions answered and gain the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about your child. Workshops are free, but please register at the link in the online calendar.

Local young artists Shelby Robertson and Nicholas Robertson will display various photographs and watercolors. Atlanta-Based self-taught artist Shelby Robertson has had a passion for art since the age of three. Her artwork primarily focuses on humans and animals; she is less drawn to abstracts. She prefers paper-canvas art over digital creations and loves how watercolors bring her art pieces to life. Her art has been on display at the High Museum and the Woodruff Arts Center. The Best We Could Do, the debut graphic novel memoir by Thi Bui, is an intimate look at one family’s journey from their war-torn home in Vietnam to their new lives in America. Exploring the anguish of immigration and the lasting effects that displacement has on a child and her family, Bui documents the story of her family’s daring escape after the fall of South Vietnam in the 1970s and the difficulties they faced building new lives for themselves.
