Remember Why We Do This!

Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Colossians 3:23 (NLT)

One of the aspects of life which can be a constant challenge is prioritizing. There are so many things, people, events, etc. that pull on our time. It’s work to not be overworked, even doing good things! What strategies do you use to keep your priorities straight?

For me, it’s centering myself. I try to return to my “why” daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly. As I pray about what assignments and engagements to accept, I try to focus on those opportunities that align with my passions , my purpose, and that put me around the right people. I also keep in mind the words of the writer of Colossians. When we work, no matter what we do, we should do it unto the Lord. Sure, people may be the immediate recipients of your labor, but it should always be God who gets the ultimate glory. If we cannot work in ways that give honor and glory to the One who created us and sustains us, we should probably not do that work at all. If the work makes you frustrated, stressed, irritable, or just consistently unhappy…you need a change.

On the flip side, when you can use your energies to make God happy, you will be fulfilled as well. When you stay focused on your why, things will align and come together more easily. Today, take a moment and assess where you are and how you are using your time, your energy, your resources…your life. And, if God is not getting the glory and you are not getting the power that comes from living a life that pleases Christ, move quickly to adjust.

Our Founders eloquently and succinctly laid out the purpose for our precious sorority. As we press through to the end of the year, let us recommit ourselves to this noble cause. I am confident that we will become better, and our sisterhood will become stronger as we do so.

Greetings Sorors,

September has arrived, and the 2023 -2024 academic year is here! Colleges have welcomed new and returning students and primary and secondary schools have opened their doors to new classes. I pray our campuses and schools remain safe and healthy places of learning throughout the year. Please view the special video message below .

O n September 11, 2001, almost 3,000 people lost their lives during the attacks at the Twin Towers, Pentagon and aboard United Airlines Flight 93. At 8:46 a.m. ET, American Airlines Flight 11 (traveling from Boston to Los Angeles) hit the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City in what we now know as the 9/11 terror attacks. At 9:03 a.m. ET, United Airlines Flight 175 (traveling from Boston to Los Angeles) hit the south tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. At 9:37 a.m. ET, American Airlines Flight 77 (traveling from Dulles, Virginia, to Los Angeles) hit the Pentagon Building in Washington. And at 10:03 a.m. ET, United Airlines Flight 93 (traveling from Newark, New Jersey, to San Francisco) crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania .

"Even the smallest act of service, the simplest act of kindness, is a way to honor those we lost, a way to reclaim that spirit of unity that followed 9/11."
President Obama in a 2011 radio address

The AKAs of Alfred Street Baptist Church Luncheon

The S orors of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority I nc, of Alfred Street Baptist Church gathered for their 12 th annual luncheon on Sunday September 10 th, 2023. The gathering began back in 2008 as a welcome luncheon to S oror Debbie Wesley, the wife of pastor H oward John Wesley as he was embarking on his new position as head pastor of Alfred Street Baptist Church. The luncheon was such a huge success, Sorors have gathered each year since, with the exception of the COVID years. It is a time for fellowship, love, reflection, and scholarship.
