Eastbourne Festival of Accessible Sport Update The first ever Eastbourne Festival of Accessible Sport takes place 28th and 29th August in Princes Park, Eastbourne. It aims to showcase accessible sport, disability support organisations, and charities across Sussex. There will be free sports sessions, live music, food, and more. Be sure to get your FREE tickets!

#TeamDefiant: Coaching Volunteer Ben Ben started volunteering with Defiant Sports this year, helping out at a few of our sessions. You’ll typically see Ben at our Football for SEND Children, Siblings and Friends session, along with Football for Adults with Disabilities, and Home Ed Sports.

All of our players get on really well with Ben, and he makes every session fun. Whether that be one-toone support in our Home Ed Sports session, or showing off his football skills with our adult football players.

He has settled into #TeamDefiant wonderfully, and we are very glad to have him as part of our coaching team!

Ben recently took some time off to get to know his newborn child, but he is now back and ready to help us with our busy summer ahead. As the three sessions Ben volunteered at are now finished for the summer, he’ll instead be helping one day a week on our summer HAF scheme.

This gives families on low income 4hrs of sports and free lunch a day, giving them something to do over the summer holidays.

Upcoming Events/Sessions in August and September August 23rd 10am-12pm - Tennis Skills Day

A morning of tennis skills, fun and socialisation in the Inclusion Hub. All ages, abilities and disabilities welcome. Booking required, £6pp, email info@defiantsports.org.uk to book.

September 13th 10am-2pm - Home Ed Information Day

An opportunity for young home educated people to meet and take part in activities, as well as for their parents to meet each other and organisations that support home ed families. If you’re an organisation that provides activities for home ed families, get in touch to book your stall for £10.

Super 1s Cricket with County Cricket Board date TBC (September) Following the success of our disability cricket sessions with Polegate & Stone Cross Cricket Club, we will soon be launching Super 1s disability cricket in collaboration with CCB. Dates coming soon!

Collaborative Family Day, Stepping Forward date TBC (September)

Working alongside Amaze, Towner Art Gallery, Holding Space and Community Stuff, we will be providing an activity walk in September. This will be for all the family, and will utilise each organisations special skillset to provide a fun day long event.

Recent Donations - Thank You to Our Community!

Although we have been busy, we haven’t forgotten the wonderful donations that we’ve received from our community over the past few months. Here is a thank you to all the people below for their donations!

Sussex Police

Rotary Club of Sovereign Harbour

Teva - who provided us with great office furniture and a multi sports table.

Kings Church - who gave us a table tennis table which is now a full time table cricket table.

Thanks also go to Gregory, who has been collecting spare change to donate to us, also to Bestie Burgers who now have a Defiant Sports collecting tin they bring to events, and to Phil and his wife for donating their trampoline to us.

The Future of Defiant and other News

As with every month that passes, July was great fun here at Defiant Sports. We begun boccia at Wannock, had our LTA Youth Start course, attended some local events, and got selected by Tesco for their token scheme in the Hailsham stores. With the festival only one month away, we have been prepping for that, and also for our summer HAF scheme which started this week and runs until 19th August. We still have lots more planned for this summer, so come along and have some sporty fun!

Accessible beach approved by local council

You may have seen our announcement on Facebook already, but our accessible beach project has just received approval! Working alongside Eastbourne Blind Society and Eastbourne Access Group, we’re planning to build an accessible beach in Eastbourne. The location will be at the foot of the Wishtower by the car park. It will allow people with mobility issues to access the beach once again, and maybe even dip their toes in the sea!

Coach Aaron joins the team as an apprentice

Aaron has been a long time member of #TeamDefiant, but he has now decided to take on an apprenticeship with us. This will be run through Coach Core, where he will receive 6hrs of training a week and will work with us for the remainder of the week. You can now expect to see Aaron at a lot more of our sessions, and taking on a greater leadership role in running sessions. This programme will last 18 months, after which we hope to keep Aaron on as a full time member of staff.
