2015 DEFIANCE COLLEGE MEN’S LACROSSE MEDIA GUIDE

WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Fellow DC Fan: It is a real pleasure to welcome you to our campus and to today’s game. We at Defiance College are extremely proud of our wonderful athletic program and of the many other activities taking place at DC. The students whom you are watching today are an important part of our larger DC family, and they are among the approximately 1000 DC students who benefit from the dedication and assistance provided by our wonderful faculty, alumni, staff, administrators, and friends. Students at DC receive a wide range of distinctive experiences as we strive to offer our students the best of all worlds. At DC, students get the individualized benefits of a student-centered small college, but they also get a world of opportunities beyond. What does this mean? It means that our students start working with us before they even start their classes to put together distinctive Personal Success Plans, so that we can work with them to tailor their DC education and experiences to their own individual interests and goals. Throughout their four years at Defianc, our students benefit from a broad range of activities and experiences that are structured both to help them achieve their individual dreams and also to enable them to stand out in the job market and when applying to graduate schools. As part of that approach, we work with our students to help them develop their own Defiance College Resume. DC students also participate in a broad array of curricular and extra-curricular activities that give students distinctive hands-on experiences in their relevant fields. Just to name a few examples, we are proud of the work that our Criminal Justice students do in investigating cold cases for Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office in Detroit; our Education students get hands-on experience working in classrooms as early as their freshman year; Science students run and manage a 200+ acre wildlife preserve; through our Business Advantage Program, business, marketing, finance, sales, accounting and other students get hands-on experiences creating and running actual businesses. I could go on and on in terms of the different opportunities our Communications, Sport Management, Pre-Med, Social Work, Graphic Design, and students in many other areas. We are all partucularly proud of the great work that our students have done running Project 701, a unique student-run, separately-legally-incorporated non-profit, in which DC students create, develop, run and manage service projects. From working with the two hospitals in town to run a free primarycare clinic to micro-finance lending; from providing computer repair services to packing backpacks full of food for needy elementary school students to take home on weekends, our DC students are gaining the tools to become entrepreneurial life-long learners, while also helping to address important local, regional, national, and international issues. In fact, Defiance College was recently named one of the top 20 schools in the country in terms of community service and engagement. DC students also get unique opportunities to travel both domestically and internationally. Under our DC Global Program, we actually guarantee an international opportunity in the junior and senior year to students in good standing who successfully complete our full four-year program. Over the past two years, DC students have traveled to Cambodia, Belize, Tanzania, Ghana, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, London, Paris, Vienna, Prague, Hungary, Slovakia, and more. Similarly, on a domestic level, DC students have traveled to New York City, Washington, D.C., Portland (OR), Pittsburgh, Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Kansas City, Des Moines, Denver, Selma, Memphis, Chicago, Nashville, Florida, South Carolina, New Mexico and elsewhere. We are very proud of the opportunities we give our students to open their eyes, raise their sights, open their minds, and , in many cases, open thier hearts as well. I hope you notice some of the recent improvements to our athletic facilities. Our George M. Smart Athletic Center (“the George”) began operation in February 2012, and we are thrilled with the opportunities our students have to use this 84,000 square foot facility, with its 200-meter indoor track, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, batting cages, fitness center, weight room, and much more. The new turf on our football/lacrosse field was installed in December 2012, and we also recently renovated our outdoor E. Stevens Dix Tennis Courts. The new bleachers and improved flooring in our Weaner Center has also enhanced the experience for our fans, and more improvements are underway across campus this year as well. I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers, and staff for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go above and beyond on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D’ all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. And the incomparable fculty at DC, together with extremely dedicated administrators and staff, all combine to make DC the special place that it is. We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today, and I hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and academic events we are proud to host. Go Jackets! Sincerely, Mark C. Gordon, President

DEFIANCE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective studentathletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics program, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values. The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defiance College mission statement…to know, to lead, to serve and to understand.

DEFIANCE COLLEGE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid, or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom.

SEASON OUTLOOK

The 2015 Defiance College men’s lacrosse team will look to take the next step as the program is set to begin its third year of existence this spring. The Yellow Jackets will return eight players from last season’s team and will be under the guidance of first-year Head Coach James Hanson who took over the program in December 2014. DC will also begin play in the newly formed Ohio River Lacrosse Conference (ORLC) which will be made up of schools from the already existing Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and Presidents’ Athletic Conference who sponsor men’s lacrosse as a varsity sport. Three of the returning eight players from a year ago are seniors in Eddie Minear (El Cason, Calif./Granite Hills), Dylan Textor (Howell, Mich./Howell) and Kevin Arriola (New Lebanon/ Dixie) and will be the team leaders in 2015. Joining the list of seniors is Mike Hill (Toledo/Bowsher) who played in the inaugural season in 2012-13, but did not play last year. Textor and Minear are the two leading returning scorers amongst the seniors after both scoring a pair of goals for two points. Textor took 11 shots, while Minear tallied nine shots. In addition, Textor had eight ground balls and Minear added seven ground balls and two caused turnovers. Arriola played in four games as a junior and took 12 shots, but did not score any points offensively. He did tally 17 ground balls and was three-of-13 on faceoffs. Hill played in all 14 games during the 201213 season and had six shots to go along with 18 ground balls. The remaining returning players will be underclassmen with five sophomores. Matthew McGervey (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Seton-La Salle Catholic) returns as the top offensive threat for DC from last year after leading the team in scoring

ARRIOLA

with four goals, including a “man-up” goal, and two assists for six points. He played in 12 of the 15 games, including starting 10 games. He also led the team in shots with 56 and shots on goal with 37. In addition, McGervey had seven ground balls and caused four turnovers defensively. Guy DiCicco (Port Huron, Mich./ Port Huron) also finished as one of the team’s leaders offensively as a freshman. He was the team’s primary faceoff man and finished 103-of-305 for a 33.8 faceoff win percentage. He saw playing time in all 15 games and started all but one of the games. DiCicco led the team in ground balls with 48 and caused nine turnovers defensively. John Becker (Chicago, Ill./ Homewood-Plossmoor) will be a player to watch defensively as he led the team in caused turnovers last season with 28. He was a ‘regular” in the starting lineup playing in 13 games overall and started 12. Becker also finished third on the team in ground balls with 38. Joining Becker on defense will be Billy LeClair (Lake Villa, Ill/Warren Township). Last season, LeClair started nine-of-11 games and recorded eight caused turnovers. He ended the season second on the team in penalties and penalty minutes with 14 for 16.5 minutes. Defiance will also return one of its two netminders from last season in sophomore Ricky Potts (Irmo, S.C./ Irmo). In his first season with the program, Potts played in 10 games, including four starts, and 442 minutes. He ended his “rookie” campaign with a 16.97 goals against average and made 115 saves with a 47.9 save percentage. The Jackets will open the season on Friday, Feb. 27 against Calvin (Mich.) College. DC is scheduled to host its home opener on Wednesday, Mar. 4 against Alma (Mich.) College at the

MINEAR

Justin F. Coressel Stadium. The team will then begin conference play on Saturday, Mar. 28 against Hanover (Ind.) College in Hanover, Ind.

Hanson

Head Coach • First Season • Hendrix (Ark.) College, 2012 419-783-2381• JHANSON@DEFIANCE.EDU James Hanson will be in his first season as a graduate assistant coach with the Defiance men’s lacrosse program in 2014-15. Hanson, a native of Tucson, Ariz., comes to Defiance after being the primary assistant coach at Missouri Valley College. During his time at Missouri Valley, his defense lead the Great Rivers Lacrosse Conference in goals against average at 6.2 goals per game and a 69.9 save percentage, which led to a conference and a berth in the MCLA National Tournament in their inaugural season. The team also was in the upper half of all of Division II of the MCLA in ground balls. Hanson helped to shape three all-conference award winners during his time with the Vikings. Prior to his coaching career, Hanson was a four-year starter at defense for Hendrix College in Conway, Ark. and was named captain his senior year. While at Hendrix, Hanson captured the career record in caused turnovers and was third in ground balls. Hanson also tabbed first-team All-Conference in the 2010 season. “We are very excited to have Coach Hanson join our staff at Defiance,” stated Whitcraft. “His knowledge and ability to teach our student-athletes on and off the field will be a vital part of our program’s success.” Hanson received his bachelor/s degree in allied health in 2012. After graduation, Hanson pursued his certification in strength and conditioning from the NSCA.
