Community News Llangollen Civic Society Civic Award 2016

Brains of Llangollen Llangollen Rotary Club took part in the 2nd round of the Rotary Quiz at Llanidloes. Llangollen were victorious but the match was touch and go, until the last game (Ancient Greek History) and it could have been anybody’s game.

The Civic Society Award for 2016 was voted for at the AGM in January. This year there were 5 nominations for people or organisations who by their efforts had enriched the town.

The picture below shows the teams and organisers. From left to right: Charles Cowan, Alun Moses, Stephen Meyer, David Utting, Scorrer - John Craddock, Timer - John Selwyn Smith and question reader - John Breeze, all from The Rotary Club of Llanidloes.

However, when it came to the vote there was a unanimous vote for Gill and Glyn Thomas. It is hard to think of an organisation in Llangollen for which Gill, ably assisted

by Glyn, had not made a contribution.

The group of 4 on the right side are Llangollen’s team: Sheena Burrell, Roger Williams, Rev Charles Stallard and Howard Cartwright.

Her death in July was deeply felt, so it was even more so when earlier in January Glyn’s death followed. This was the first time the society had made a posthumous award. The photograph shows Betty Lowe, Life President of the Society presenting the award to Rhodri and Penri Thomas, sons of Gill and Glyn. The presentation was made at the Hanes AGM in January.

Sadly this was to be the last meeting of Hanes, with the loss of both Secretary and Treasurer it was decided that Hanes would no longer continue, but members of Hanes have been invited to become Friends of Llangollen Museum. The museum holds monthly talks, and will be arranging visits to places of interest in the course of the year.

Good luck to Llangollen in the next round and commiserations to Llanidloes for a hard fought and very tight game.

The Inner Wheel Club of Llangollen The guest at the February meeting of the club was this year’s District Chairman, Carol Tynan from Southport. Carol who was introduced by Club President Val Cartwright spoke of her childhood upbringing in Essex and Rhyl. She and her husband Rick are members of the Magic Circle and the talk ended with Carol demonstrating a three rope trick to illustrate the three ideals of Inner Wheel, to promote true friendship, to encourage ideals of personal service and to foster international understanding.

Carol was presented with a cheque for her chosen charity When you wish upon a star. This charity enables children with life threatening illnesses to fulfil a longed for ambition.

During the business meeting Eulanwy Davies, the International Service Chairman discussed arrangements for the Spring Whist Drive to be held at the Welfare House on Wednesday March 2nd in aid of Northern Cleft Palate . The charity helps children in the Third World get much needed corrective surgery.

We held our January meeting at the Hand on Wednesday 23rd with an encouraging attendance. We were able to welcome a new member, who was having to face the problems of decision-making about his next step post diagnosis. Without providing positive answers, conversation within the group was enough to help him begin to work out what to do.

Everybody had been in the same position, sometimes with the help of professional guidance, sometimes not.

Liverpool Cathedral cancelled our abseil at last minute due to fears for the fabric of the building. We would like to thank all who supported us, by way of sponsorship and contributions, we apologise for the inconvenience but assure you that all monies will be returned. Please find the email I received below:

Four members of the group are to be involved in a translation exercise being funded by Belfast University, but actually run by the University of Bangor. All Welsh speakers, they are to be given English language material on prostate and first draft Welsh translations. Their help will come in trying to make the translations as close as possible, not only for technical terms but also for more emotional language to do with feelings and reactions. It is good to know that we can be useful in these ways.

There is an increasing demand for prostrate sufferers to contribute to documents, pamphlets and research programmes, as well as one or two television programmes which are in preparation concerning treatments and diets.

As regards diets, there is a strong possibility that Macmillans will repeat the very useful cooking course attended by some of the group before Christmas. This time, if all went to plan, it would be held at a location in Llangollen.

Roy raises over £12,000 for charities

‘I am sorry to say that after taking professional advice and in consultation with Chapter, Liverpool Cathedral is reluctantly having to cancel the indoor abseil that was to take place on February 18th and the 25th. I realise this will be very disappointing news for all those charities and individuals who had been looking to, and raising money to take part in this event.

We have contacted all those directly affected and will work with them to minimise the disruption and inconvenience.

With safety a paramount concern in our minds, our checking process in the run up to the event revealed some damage to the fabric of the building caused by the successful first indoor abseil in 2016. After a careful examination of the area and consultation with experts, it was clear we could not successfully secure the scaffolding for this year’s event in a way that wouldn’t cause further damage to the cathedral fabric. As responsible custodians of a Grade 1listed building, seeking to raise funding to entrust the cathedral to future generations, we could not allow that to happen.

We find ourselves faced with a dilemma: the only way to guarantee the safety of participants in the abseil involves an unacceptable degree of damage to the building; but to avoid that damage involves an absolutely unacceptable level of risk to participants in the abseil. We have not been able to find a way to balance these risks in an acceptable way.

I am sorry that we have had to make this decision and make it so close to the event but we are sure people will understand the reasons and we remain committed to working with our partners and supporters on a range of events and activities in 2017.’

In January Roy Duggan from Trevor handed over £12,000 to be divided equally between three charities; Hope House, Nightingale House and MacMillan Cancer Support.

The money was raised over a period of twelve months by going door to door on his mobility scooter asking for donations and raising awareness of the charities.

Roy said “I would like to thank everyone who gave so generously and has supported me over the years”. The donations were handed over on Roy’s birthday, January 19th, to Eleri Brady and Theresa Richards of MacMillan Cancer Support, Eluned Yaxley from Hope House and Luke MacDonald from Nightingale House Hospice.

Next, he plans to raise funds for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool and the Wales Air Ambulance Charity.

Llangollen Patchwork Group

Plas Newydd is putting on an exhibition of photos displaying the Rotary club Garden Fete here at Y Caban at Plas Newydd. This will coincide with the Garden Fete itself which is this year 3rd June. The exhibition will be the week before to the week after ie: starting Saturday 27th May to Sat 10th June 2017.

Llangollen Patchwork Group started seven years ago, and meets at the RAFA Club on the first Saturday of the month, from 10.30-2.30. The cost is £4 per meeting.

We are looking for any photos of the Garden Fete from any year particularly old ones held here at Plas Newydd plus any interesting stories/ articles you can remember. If you have anything, could you please contact Plas Newydd or drop them off here before Friday 26th May.

Members work on their own projects. On the go at the moment we have quilts, Christmas decorations and gifts, wall hangings, cushions and bags. From time to time we have workshops led by visitors with particular skills. We have also made quilts for the Linus Charity, which provides quilts for children experiencing difficulties in their lives.

Letters A Winter’s Tale A seasonal evening of entertainment was enjoyed by all at the annual Christmas concert in the beautiful setting of Llangollen Methodist Church on December 23rd. This year we were treated to a performance of The Manchester Carols (by Carole Ann Duffy and Sasha Johnson Manning). The wonderful lyrical words and music were sung by Cantorion Collen Choir and solosits conducted

by Eirwen Jones and accompanied on piano and organ by Owen Roberts plus music from Glasswalkers Trio and narrated by Adam Tranmer.

Special mention must be made of the very talented young soloists who enthralled us with their beautiful singing, Myfanwy Tranmer, Joanna Stallard and Gabriel Tranmer who also played the tuba.

Every year local piano and music teacher Eirwen Jones gives her time and considerable effort into organising this event in aid of charity this year is her fifteenth concert and the Llangollen Canal Boat Trust will benefit with match funding from Barclays. We are lucky to have people like Eirwen and her performers in our community, Diolch o galon.

Cancer Research UK Christmas Quiz 2016 Very many thanks to everyone who supported Cancer Research UK through this year’s Christmas Quiz. We are delighted to say that the sum raised was by far the largest yet, £677.23.

We certainly sold more quizzes this year than ever before, but fewer than usual were returned. Well, it was more difficult than ever! I’m truly sorry for that, and I promise I shall lighten it next year – just a little! With that in mind it’s even more congratulations to our winner, who was well ahead of the field with an impressive score of 46½. Behind her we had a clear 2nd place and then three tying for 3rd. The proverbial hat was called in to allocate that prize and the results were as follows 1st Prize 2nd Prize points) 3rd Prize

Dear Dee Valley News, I am going out on a limb seeking your help. With the centenary of the ending of World War One in November 2018 I am asking you to publish the accompanying information in the remote hope that I might be able to locate the descendents of a particular Welsh soldier who served with the 38th Welsh Division.

My father, 2nd Lt Kenneth Robert Tighe Low MC, fought with the Machine Gun Corps, and was assigned to the 38th Welsh Division. A month before the end of the war, and a month before his twentieth birthday, he was struck by a shell and he was carried on the back of his batman for two miles to the nearest field hospital.

Despite having his right leg amptutated and the left one set rigid with shrapnel in the hip he lived until 1973 when he died from lung cancer. In 1968 my father and mother travelled to Llangollen to renew contact with the batman. I believe this to be correct and that my memory is not letting me down.

I do not know whether the batman has any local descendants, but it would be marvellous if he does, as I would love to meet them at this poignant time of history. This, of course, depends on whether he spoke freely about his wartime experiences to his extended family, if he has one.

Unfortunately, many of the Machine Gun Corps records have been lost. I am also trying to gain the information I require from the 38th Welsh Division records and from War Diaries. I am only just now getting back on track after losing my wife from a very rare cancer - cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer) - in December 2015, followed by me having a pacemaker fitted and further heart problems. Hopefully, I am on the road to full recovery.

Vet’s Diary On call this weekend I had to attend a tiny Pomeranian puppy weighing just 800 grams. He had managed to break a front leg whilst scampering about, both the radius and ulna between the elbow and wrist. In a pup this size the bones are the size of matchsticks, and, unfortunately, it was a nasty break requiring surgery.

I operated on Saturday afternoon and inserted a fine stainless steel pin along the radius to bring the broken ends together and hold them in position. It was a fiddly job! Not only do tiny dogs like this have very fine and fragile bones but they also have problems with the bones healing when they are broken. It will be a month or two before we know how this little fella is going to fare.

Apart from that the weekend has been fairly quiet, helped by both bad weather and the presence of rugby on the telly. On call is usually quieter during nasty weather. A combination, I think, of pets staying inside in the warm, thus keeping out of trouble, and owners wondering if they can be bothered to leave the house if the problem seems not too serious!

I have killed a Unicorn. It was sitting on the settee all pink and lovely, with little rainbows on its back and a sparkly horn. I took it from that settee and killed it. Ten minutes later all that was left was a pair of eyes and a lot of pink fur. It was a toy, obviously, but by the reaction of the small child, who cried for what seemed like three days, you would have thought I had murdered a live one.

I thought it seemed like a good time to remind the people who live here of my house rules. Coats do not need buttons, fleeces do not need zips or pockets, boots do not need laces, shoes do not need heels, wellies function much better with ventilation holes in them and slippers do not need to exist at all. Nor do Unicorns.

I like to go in the car. My preference is the front seat but I am no longer allowed in the front as I won't stay in my seat belt and the bald guy said it really is not safe to sit on his knee while he is driving. I often get into other people's cars and vans too. This week I got in with the postman. He was very nice but he didn't take me anywhere.

The bald guy always denies that he lets me sleep on the bed when the lady is away, but she knows I do, that's the witch in her. She's never caught me, the bald guy always locks her out so we have time to get back to normal, but the other day she came home really early. She was locked out as usual, but she got in through the bathroom window, the bald guy missed that.

I nearly had a heart attack when I saw her standing there at 6am "I cannot believe," she said to the bald guy, " that you even let him use my pillows.”

She didn't seem to want to hear that I actually have my own pillow cases.

She can be very unreasonable that woman.

Treasurer’s Report In December, the Treasurer provided information to members about the Minimum Wage, increases in Insurance Premium Tax and Personal Allowances. As usual, our Treasurer is available for personal consultation and advice on tax matters.

2017 Year of Legends There will be a members workshop on 20th March 2017 when Comprehensive Guides will be available This initiative establishes Wales as the land of Legends – people, places, products and specifically to boost Wales’ profile as a leading UK destination. July will be the month Llangollen will maximise the potential of this initiative with a range of events.

Business Rates

There was discussion regarding members increases in Business Rates in 2017 as a result of the recent re-valuation. Examples of rate increases were shared and action being taken to challenge where necessary.

Membership 2017 In 2016 we had 62 members and we plan to increase membership by offering social media training courses.

Llantysilio Community Council Some items taken from the Minutes of the February 2017 Meeting of the Council.

Playground at Llidiart Annie Eight residents, who have formed a committee to oversee the re-instatement of the playground, were also present at the Meeting to discuss with the Council the possibility of support for the project. This was readily given and they were asked to contact the Clerk for further information if necessary.

Ros Stockdale, D.C.C. Countryside Officer In 2006 the Council managed to obtain grant funding to stabilise the winding shed on the Horseshoe Pass and preserve the tramway. Now that the Chain Bride project is complete, the Council is looking into continuing with the tramway project with the original aim of preserving the industrial heritage of the area. Ros had been invited to advise the Council on how this could be achieved. She said that the area is not only important to local heritage and archaeology but is also a wildlife habitat, all of which needs preserving. The only downside to this project is providing parking for visitors. The car park at Llantysilio Green is already stretched to the limit with vehicles parking at the roadside. The Clerk was asked to liaise with Ros before the Council’s Meeting in March.

Matters arising from the previous Minutes Minute No. 16/3269: Not suitable for heavy vehicles’ sign, Llandynan. The signs are now in place Minute No. 16/3276: Pot-holes in stretch of road from Rhewl to Glyndyfrdwy. The Clerk said that she would chase this up with Highways.

Minute No. 16/3267: Overhanging hedges at Llandynan. The Clerk said that she would report this matter.

Minute No. 16/3275: Pot-holes on the lower road in Pentredŵr. The Clerk said that she would chase it up with Highways but thought that the County Council probably intend resurfacing the road in the new financial year.

Minute No. 16/3275: Footpath at Abbey Mount. The Clerk reported that she had spoken to Adrian Walls, DCC Footpaths Officer and he is aware of the problems with this path but will investigate further.

Planning Applications Application No. 27/2016/1214: Canalside Bungalow, Pentrefelin Erection of replacement detached garage.

Application No. 27/2016/1269 – Dinbren Isaf, Dinbren.Installation of new door and internal works. (Grade 11 Listed Building consent).There were no objections to the above Applications.

Cemetery Cllr .Walton reported that the salt-bin was now useless as the lid had been left open and the salt has set like concrete, also the bin was being used as a litter and dog-poo bin. The Clerk was asked to get the bin removed.

Telephone kiosk It was agreed to put an article in the Council’s newsletter asking for ideas as to how to utilise the kiosk.

Defibrillator It was agreed that more investigation was necessary before the Council could proceed. The Clerk has already obtained some information regarding cost.

Clerk’s report Risk Assessment The Clerk reminded the Council that its Risk Assessments needs to be carried out before the end of March 2017. This is normally undertaken by the Clerk and Chairman or Vice Chairman.

Cyngor Cymuned Llangollen Wledig Llangollen Rural Community Council Before the meeting started the Chairman Cllr. Mrs Alyson Winn asked the Councillors to stand in silence for one minute to remember their colleague Glyn Jones who had recently passed away.

At the February meeting in Froncysyllte Community Centre the following matters were discussed: Police Matters: The Chairman Cllr. Mrs Alyson Winn welcomed PCSO Dave Jenkins to the meeting and he gave his report which covered December and January.

Trevor: During December there had been one case of anti-social behaviour.

During January there had been one case of arson and two cases of anti-social behaviour.

Fron: During December there had been two burglaries and one theft of a motor vehicle. During January there had been one theft of a motor vehicle. It was decided by the Community Councillors that the priorities for February would be for PCSO Dave Jenkins to spend his time checking out issues identified within the three villages.

Playgrounds: The new play equipment has now been installed in the Oaks playground.

Work continues on the Royal Gardens and the War Memorial project and before Christmas an application was submitted by Groundworks, on behalf of the Town Council, to the Cory Environmental Trust landfill communities’ fund.

The Town Council are delighted to report that an award of £45,000 has been made by the Cory Environmental Trust in Britain to the project costs. Addition applications to the WREN landfill communities fund to CADW, the Welsh Government’s historic environment service and the War Memorials Trust to find the additional £67,000 required to start work on the project. If anybody knows of any funds that could be made available to this project then please contact the Town Clerk.

The Local Government Elections 2017 are being held on the 4th May 2017, which means that all eleven seats on the Town Council will be up for election.

The deadline for the Delivery of nomination papers is Tuesday 4 April and if you would like more information on how to stand as a candidate then please contact the Town Clerk or visit the Electoral Commissions website www. electoralcommission.org.uk At the January meeting of the Town Council Members had a presentation from Ms Lesley Richards, of Friends of the Earth Llangollen, on a new initiative entitled Bee Friendly Llangollen. She outlined that this was a new national accreditation scheme to improve towns, businesses, schools and organisations for pollinators and is administered by the Welsh Government. Insect pollinators include bees, butterflies, moths and beetles and are essential for pollinating about 90% of our wildflowers and about 70% of our food that’s one in every 3 mouthfuls of food we eat. However she stressed that pollinators have been in decline for the last 30 years due to a range of issues, land-use intensification, habitat destruction and fragmentation, disease, the use of agro-chemicals and climate change. Bee friendly is therefore an opportunity for local action that can make a real difference for the future of pollinators, because it’s a new scheme the requirements are entry level, straight forward simple steps. Friends of the Earth Llangollen will be concentrating on four elements for the scheme which are; Improving the availability of wild flowers, building on Pengwern Wild Spaces, a project to develop a partnership between interested local residents and DCC. It will hopefully contribute to the aims of Bee Friendly as well as improving the appearance of the estate. Five star accommodation, working with the community to improve habitat availability in gardens in the form of bee homes and looking to identify suitable nesting sites for solitary bees and bumblebees.

Freedom from pesticides, working with the Town and County Council to reduce the use of herbicides and pesticides in public open space in the town.

Fun, an event for pollinators 27th May at Plas Newydd working with Denbighshire Countryside Service, North Wales Wildlife Trust, Chester Zoo, Butterfly Conservation and a number of other organisations to raise awareness of the importance of pollinators and provide a family fun day for the community.

Friends of the Earth Llangollen have also been in contact with the local schools and are hoping to provide an education element to the project. Although the main aims of the project are not reliant on funding, we are in the process of applying for some funding for the project through the Tesco carrier bag fund.

Friends of the Earth Llangollen hope that the Town Council agree that the project would be positive for the towns Cittaslow status.

Museum News We have been busy in the Museum throughout February. We would like to thank the Quilters Guild for their Quilfest exhibition which, yet again, proved to be very popular with visitors to the Museum.

Throughout the next few months, the Museum will be hosting a display of work undertaken by local schools as part of the Museum’s Heritage Lottery project: ‘The Effects of the Great War on Llangollen, Change Then, Memory Now.’ From the 1st March this will be in the Gallery space then from April onwards it will be on the ground floor of the Museum. The project received funding from The Heritage Lottery Fund enabling us to undertake outreach sessions with Ysgol Dinas Bran and Ysgol Ruabon. These sessions took place between May and October 2016. The two local schools selected three topics each which they researched to produce illustrated boards. The topics which will be displayed on the boards are the lives of children, the role of women, toys, food, transport and communication. These reflect life in Llangollen and the surrounding area from 1914 to 1918. Links were also made with Denbigh High School where students have worked on a large collection of letters dating to the period spanning WW1.

The students have worked extremely hard to produce very high quality research and we will be delighted to welcome students, families, individuals and groups to the Museum to view the results of this hard work.There will also be a display of items reflecting life during WW1. Dave Crane has produced a Digital Trail of places around Llangollen linked to WW1 which will be of great interest to local people and visitors alike. We would like to extend a big thank you to all the students, staff and members of the Museum who have worked so hard to make this possible.

In the Gallery, as well as the WW1 exhibition, we will be displaying the Art Competition entries on the subject of ‘Llangollen and the surrounding area – Past, Present, Future or Fantastic.’ The prize giving evening will take place on Wednesday 8th March at 6.30pm. Refreshments will be available.

This month’s talk is on Wednesday 29th March at 7.30pm and will be by Llangollen’s very own Les Davies. This promises to be a very interesting talk tracing the history of coracles across the world, as well as in different parts of Wales. Les will explain their construction and how they have been used in Llangollen in the past. Cost is £3 on the door, which includes coffee/tea and biscuits.

Heritage Craft Story

Last summer I spent many happy hours spinning fleece outside my front door. I was very pleasantly surprised to realise just how much interest both my friends, neighbours, and visitors to the town, showed. Typically comments included: “Gosh I remember my grandmother spinning!” “I had no idea people still did this, I thought it died out years ago.” “My mother used to spin, I wish I learnt how!”

The children invariably wanted to know where Sleeping Beauty pricked her finger and ask if they could have a go. It was these comments, alongside my role as Trustee for the Lock-Up Heritage Centre that the idea for Heritage Craft Story evolved. I’d like to say a huge thank you, to all those people who stopped to chat.

My craft is my passion. My idea is to map all the crafts that were taking place in and around Llangollen during the life-time of the Lock-Up. I’d to talk with anyone who still is, or remembers working their crafts. The project will record, photograph, film and make photographic stories of each craft. These will then be stored on our website and made available to anyone who is interested.

As a newcomer to Llangollen I would love to hear from anyone who would be interested in taking part. If a traditional craft is part of your childhood, do please get in touch and share your memories. The buildings in Llangollen are historically interesting and important, but it’s people who bring buildings to life. Their crafts that tell their stories and their creations leave a legacy for the future.

DOES IT HAVE TO RHYME ?

I think that I have said several time in the last year or so of these articles that poetry requires both inspiration ( the idea) and technique ( how the idea is conveyed ). A lot of children’s poetry is full of startling phrases and insights, but what they lack is the experience to bring them into an appropriate form.

Quite often, the main kind of form suggested is one based upon regular rhyme, and the rhyming words sometimes take precedence over sense.

That is why I often suggest patterns or models which may be helpful.

As we saw with one of the Christmas poems, having a strong rhythm pattern is a great help for certain kinds of poetry.

I wrote the following poem when offered the title of ‘ Downsize’ which came at the height of a government campaign to get the reasonably well-off to give up their comfort zone and make way for the more needy next generation. The very word ‘ Downsize’ immediately suggests the very familiar tune of the Tony Hatch/Petula Clark hit, ‘Downtown’.

‘When you’re getting on, ‘get up and go’ has all gone, You should make the move ‘ downsize’!

You’ve got far too much money, your whole outlook’s too sunnyThe government will approve – downsize!

Leave behind the spoodles, the Chablis and the Audi, Settle in a one room flat with neighbours who are rowdy.

How can you lose ?

Your remaining years are so much simpler there, A microwave, an Elsan and a wooden chair Downsize, shrink in your overcoat!

Downsize- clutch your last five pound note!

Downsize, struggle to keep afloat !

So maybe, we will just fade awayForget all our worries , forget all our care, Downsize, dwindling recklessly; downsize, vanishing silently.

Treetips with Even though it hasn’t been a particularly bad winter, it does wear a bit thin after a while. There’s a feeling of security knowing there are a few extra hours at either end of the day that mean you don’t have to rush, there’s always a bit more time to get a bit more done. I like that pace of work.

March feels like breaking out of hibernation. Even though it can still be cold, it feels like you can actually get properly busy in March. It’s time to plant some of the good summer salad crops like tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers in the greenhouse. A mistake I am guilty of making is planting too much. I plant too many seeds to compensate for the possibility of some of them failing and then when it comes to thinning them out, I feel bad about throwing out the little plants after they’ve put in so much effort, that I end up keeping them. I have got to be a bit more ruthless. That being said, last year I planted way too many leeks, so when I planted them out I had loads of tiny stunted leeks in seed trays. They were delicious, matchstick sized leeks that tasted just like a full grown leek. I’m wondering what the possibilities are for mini veg.

Is it Legal?

Access rights mean my son is missing out on sport. What can I do?

Q: My son has lived with me since I divorced his father when he was four years old. He is now fourteen. From the beginning the arrangement was that he would stay with his father every other weekend. However, since that arrangement was made his father has moved forty miles away and my son has developed a love for sport. This is causing arguments as my son wants to play in the school teams at weekends and do various other activities with his friends that his father refuses to take him to. His father says he has a right to stick to the access rights agreed in court but I feel my son is missing out on what he enjoys and is good at and wants to do.

What should I do?

A: One thing you cannot do is just block access, as this would mean you are in breach of the Order and your ex could apply for sanctions through the Family Court. Your best option is to approach your ex-partner with a view to changing the child arrangements to fit in with your son’s activities.

If you don’t feel you can achieve a suitable compromise on your own then a good family lawyer can help you.

Most Child Arrangement Orders contain a clause allowing parents to agree different contact arrangements without going back to court, in which case both you and your ex-partner would need to sign a written agreement. If you cannot agree an arrangement that suits everyone, as a parent you do have an automatic right to apply to the Court for a change in the order.

As your son is now fourteen, a wishes and feelings report would probably be prepared and because of his age your son’s wishes would carry much weight when the Court are considering the application.

As the tax year draws to a close a few reminders

Accountant’s Corner As I write this the first signs of spring are showing and the sun is streaming through the window, although I doubt the tax system will be quite as sunny in 2017 as we learn more about the impending introduction of Making Tax Digital and how this will affect all of us who currently submit a tax return.

Below are items that caught my attention since the last edition of Accountant’s Corner and a few reminders of things to consider as we approach the tax year end.

One third of all pension schemes have been subject to fraud According to a recent report up to one third of all pensions schemes have been subject to fraud. This can be from not being informed when schemes are not informed when a pensioner dies and the benefit continues to be paid. People being targeted by fraudsters to withdraw their pension funds and put the monies into far more risky investments.

Voice recognition for HMRC helplines HMRC have launched a trial where taxpayers can voluntarily register for voice recognition to avoid the need to answer security questions when contacting HMRC. A passphrase is repeated up to 5 times and then stored securely ready for when the taxpayer calls once the system has gone live in a few weeks. This is not mandatory and taxpayers can still continue in the usual way. Users of the HMRC app on Apple and android devices can use fingerprint recognition.

ISA allowance: This is £15,240 in the current year and increasing to £20,000 in 2017/18.

If you do wish to invest use your allowance by the 5th April as it cannot be carried forward.

Pension allowance: Review your pension contributions and if you wish to invest significant sums then ensure that you are not exceeding your contribution limits.

Also the small pots regime falls from the current £10,000 to £4,000 on the 6th April therefore if your circumstances are suitable you may wish to take advantage of this to effectively get a tax free bonus.

Inheritance tax gift allowance: In order to reduce any potential inheritance tax liability an individual can give up to £3,000 per tax year to reduce their estate. This allowance if not used can be carried forward one year, so if you didn’t use your 2015/16 allowance it needs to be used before the 6th April.

Amending a tax return: You have up to four years to amend a tax return after the tax year has ended, so if you do need to revise your 2012/13 tax return you have up to the 5th April 2017 to notify HMRC of any amendment required.

Making the wrong decision – ask an expert A café proprietor registered for VAT despite the turnover being below the registration limit. The taxpayer mistakenly thought that as he had not reached the registration limit that VAT was not payable. The unfortunate result was that he had to pay VAT in excess of £15,000 when there was no need to register. Had he sought advice this wouldn’t have happened.

On Saturday, 11th February, many of our parents and pupils under the guidance of Max Ellson planted Apple trees and Raspberry plants at the school to create our very own Orchard. In time we hope that the orchard will produce fruit for the pupils at the school. The orchard will also contribute towards making the site a Bee friendly one! Max Ellson is a parent and governor at the school, and he supports all aspects of Eco schools. With the support of his company Marches Ecology we have also installed bird boxes around the site. One of the bird boxes has a camera installed which will hopefully enable the pupils to observe the birds nesting!

Ar ddydd Gwener 10fed o Chwefror, bu’r disgyblion yn dathlu diwrnod Cerddoriaeth Cymraeg drwy wrando ar fandiau Cymraeg drwy’r dydd!

As part of of the school’s Welsh charter activities, a special Saint Dwynwen’s day disco was held where only music by Welsh artists was played. On Friday, 10th February, the pupils celebrated Welsh music day by listening to music by Welsh bands in class all day!

Cystadleuaeth Cogurdd 2017/ Cogurdd Competion 2017 Ar ddydd Llun, 13eg o Chwefror bu 15 o ddisgyblion blwyddyn 4, 5 a 6 yn cystadlu yng nghystadleuaeth Coginio Cogurdd. Roedd gofyn i’r disgyblion baratoi ‘Tableu Blodfresych’ yn annibynnol, tra roedd Mrs Joy Pingram ein cogyddes yn beirniadau eu sgiliau coginio. Llongyfarchiadau mawr i Arun am ennill ac i Catrin am ddod yn ail, a phob lwc iddynt yn y rownd Sirol mis nesaf!

On Monday, 13th February 15 pupils from years 4, 5 and 6 competed in the Cogurdd Cooking Competition. The pupils were required to prepare and serve a ‘Cauliflower Tableu’ independently while Mrs Joy Pingram, the school cook assessed their cooking skills. Congratulations to Arun for winning first prize and to Catrin for coming second. Best of luck to them in the county round next month.

Pel Rwyd yr Urdd/ Urdd Netball Bu tîm Pel Rwyd yr ysgol yn cystadlu yn nhwrnament yr Urdd ar ddydd Iau, 9fed o Chwefror yn Rhuthun. Buont y agos iawn o gyrraedd y ffeinal ar ôl ennill pob gem ond am un! Da iawn nhw!

The school’s netball team competed at the Urdd tournament on Thursday, 9th February in Ruthin. They just missed out on getting to the final after winning every game except for one! Well done to them all!

The school’s cross country team were very successful at the Cross CountryTtournament held for Ysgol Dinas Bran feeder schools on the 18th January. Medals were won by Shay, Haydn, Rhys, Ciara and Maria. Ysgol y Gwernant were also the winners of the teams competition.

Emily Larwood is a member of our sixth form with ambitions to compete for Wales. She has written the following article.

I started road cycling at age 12 when I got my first road bike. I was always interested in racing but I never knew much about it. In April 2015 I went to Manchester Velodrome for the first time with Welsh Cycling for a club session. I loved it and in September 2015 I joined Manchester Velodrome’s home club Sportcity Velo. I now train in Manchester once or twice a week depending on the time of year and race in the weekly track league when it is on. I competed in the National Youth Omnium series in 2016 travelling to Bournemouth, Reading, Cardiff and Newport. In August I also competed in the National Youth Track Championships in Derby; my best result was 18th in the 500m time trial.

On the 14th of January 2017 I travelled down to Newport to compete in the Welsh Junior Track Championships as I am now an Under 18 rider. The first day was the sprint competition. I qualified fastest and made my way through to the final. In a close race I won the title of Welsh Junior Sprint Champion. The second day was the remainder of the events, so for me this was the 500m time trial, Keirin, scratch race and points race. I placed 4th in the points race after winning the final sprint, 3rd in the 500m time trial and I claimed another title in the Keirin, coming 1st.

Ox-Bridge Success Four pupils from Ysgol Dinas Brân had cause for celebration in January following the news that their application to either Oxford or Cambridge University had been successful.

Bethan Morris, not pictured, (Medicine at Homerton College, Cambridge), and Elinor McSorley, (Biomedical Sciences at Magdalen College, Oxford) have both received unconditional offers having already completed their A levels a year early. Jessica Brown, (Maths at Somerville College, Oxford) and Carys Stallard, (English at Churchill College, Cambridge) have been offered places conditional upon their A level results which they take this summer.

Mr Martyn Froggett said, “We are very proud of the achievements of these four students who exemplify the school motto of Success Through Effort. Not only have they all studied extremely hard, but they also contribute to the wider life of the school through their involvement in our many extra-curricular activities. We wish them all the very best”.

Clearly Emily is one to watch in the future and we wish her every success as she continues to balance studying and training.

Erasmus + Ysgol Dinas Brân has been very fortunate to have been accepted to take part in a minority language project which is funded by Erasmus +.This is a European Union programme for education, training, youth and sports. We have joined schools from Scotland, Finland, Poland, Switzerland and Italy for this project and pupils will have the opportunity to visit Finland, Poland and Italy with the grand finale being a return visit to Wales in 2018.

The aim of the project is to enable young people to understand and revel in the language and culture of their own country, and raise awareness of other minority languages and cultures with the hope that they will work together in the schools and local community to maintain their traditions and minority languages for years to come. This project has been split into different themes, and the theme that we were discussing in Gymasiet Grankulla samskola School in Finland was ‘Understanding our countries’ culture and identity’.

Zoe Nicholas, Laura McAndrew, Eve Barrett and Bethany Pierce accompanied by Miss G. Edwards spent a week in Finland just before Christmas where they enjoyed the hospitality of host families. The theme for the visit was Understanding Our Country’s Culture and Identity and a full programme of activities was enjoyed by everyone. After introductory presentations by each school there was an opportunity to enjoy traditional dance, games and cooking.

Our contribution was Welsh cakes which everyone enjoyed. During the week all the pupils worked collaboratively to produce a film about their languages. They also sampled a sauna, but didn’t have to jump into an icy lake afterwards; visited the town of Porvoo where the buildings are all wooden; joined in the celebrations for St Lucia at the Lutheran cathedral in Helsinki and finished(!) the week watching a professional game of ice hockey.

In addition many more of our year 13 students have applied to Universities around the country and are receiving offers through UCAS. Considerable work goes in to ensuring that each student finds the right course and university for them. Support and guidance is given to ensure personal statements are both honest and of a high quality, and the teaching staff all contribute to the school reference which is written for each applicant by our Head of Sixth form, Mr A. Derbyshire. Students also receive detailed information about student finance to alleviate any concerns they might have in this area.

As we approach the exam season each and every one of our sixth form students is working hard to achieve their best possible results in both AS level and A level exams.

Ysgol Bryn Collen London Trip 2017 On 26th January, Years Five and Six enjoyed their annual trip to London, and what a great time they all had.......

After a very exciting and early start, we arrived in London at lunchtime and had a sightseeing tour of all the iconic landmarks; including Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, the Eye, Tower Bridge, Downing Street, Trafalgar Square etc. Our first arranged visit took us to the Tower of London, where we saw the magnificent Crown Jewels (we saw real diamonds which were as big a golf balls) and had a guided tour by a story teller.

The next morning, we spoiled ourselves and had an enormous cooked breakfast and packed our bags. Before leaving London, we went shopping in Leicester Square where we went to ‘M and M World’ and the new Lego Store.

At lunchtime, we left London and made our way to the Harry Potter Studios. Everyone was very excited as we anticipated what might be inside the huge studios. First of all, we had a costume workshop, where we saw the actual costumes that Voldemort, Harry and Hagrid had worn. We worked with materials that had been used on the actual films. After the workshop, we spent four hours exploring the film sets and props, sat on the Hogwarts Express, learned about fascinating things that brought the magical books to enchanting films, and of course we all had a mug of scrumptious Butter Beer.

A little later, having checked into our impressive central hotel, we went for our evening meal in Leicester Square.

We ate at the famous Bubba Gump, where we were thoroughly enjoyed a delicious meal.

It was then time for our taste of the West End. We went to see the show ‘School of Rock’ (written for stage by Andrew Lloyd Webber) which was absolutely amazing.

Messy Church is co-ordinated by Deacon Lisa Rathbone of the Llangollen Methodist Church – but members of several different denominations come together to plan and prepare for each month’s meeting (often over coffee and cake!)

Some helpers like to offer craft activities for those who attend to get involved in, usually linked with the theme of the session. Other helpers get the story and music ready, or keep the “register” of contact details up to date, do the publicity and other admin jobs.

Still others plan the meal we share and buy the essential ingredients to cook and serve on the day. We all muck in with setting up the Hall and clearing up afterwards. And the best thing of all – we all have a great time together sharing our faith! Messy Church is not just for children!

If you would like to join in the fun, do come along to the next meeting on Saturday March 25th, 3-5pm in the Memorial Hall in Market Street. All sorts of activities will be on offer – and as it’s the day before Mothering Sunday, there may well be a link in there somewhere!

Last month we reported that our Junior and Senior Members of the Club had been chosen at the Christmas Dinner but we weren’t able to add a photo, so, here it is! Junior Member Megan Jones and Senior Member Aled Jones were elected by club members for their contribution to the club over the last year - well done you two! In the centre presenting the trophies is Club President, Mrs Dona Francis.

In mid-January we entered two teams in the county Quiz at Denbigh Rugby Club, they must have been equally matched as the one team, Aled Morris, Katie Hughes, Hollie Pearson and Dafydd Williams from Cilcain club came 4th and just 1 mark behind was our other team made up of Iolo Francis, Megan Jones, Helen Newbrook and Aled Jones. A few days later a group of members went to Flip Out trampolining centre in Chester and had a night jumping around. As you can see from the group photo, everyone enjoyed themselves. The following week we put everyone’s cooking skills to the test and taught people to make an omelette. The results were very good and I don’t think anyone will starve when Mum is away!

Clwyd County held it’s Titles Night at the Lion Hotel In Cerrigydrudion on January 31st. We had Aled Morris competing for the Senior member title, Erica Swan competed for County Queen and Megan Jones competed for Junior Member. All three received excellent comments from the judges on the night.

On February 12th we held a Clay Shoot, again by kind permission of Pete and Menna Newbrook. The weather threw all sorts at us from sleet to snow but there were quite a few 20 out of 20 scores. Winners at the end of the

70 Years of Song The Fron Male Voice Choir celebrate their 70th anniversary in 2017 and have a busy schedule of concerts throughout the UK to fill their diary.

However they have ensured that there will be plenty of opportunity for them to entertain audiences in North Wales who have been so supportive over the years. They already had concerts in Rhyl’s Pavilion on February 25th and Bangor Cathedral on March 4th. Still to come is a concert at the former Primitive Methodist Chapel, Chirk. This was the venue of the Fron’s first concert back in 1947. proceeds from the concert will go towards the provision of Music Therapy at Black Park.

On the 13th May they appear at the Stiwt theatre Rhos with guests Cantorion Rhos and WNO soprano Camilla Roberts, who sang one of the lead roles in last year’s Carmen at the Llangollen Eisteddfod. Proceeds from this concert go to the Welsh Air Ambulance.

In December 2016 Cory Band retained their Brass In Concert title at the Sage Theatre Gateshead, thereby becoming the first band in history to win the European, British Open, National and BiC titles in the same calendar year.

On the 3rd of July they are taking part in the opening concert of the Llangollen Eisteddfod. They are to join Rhos Male, Colne Valley and Canoldir Male Voice Choirs to form a massed Male Voice Choir. Under the leadership of the son of one of the Eisteddfod’s previous Music Directors, Owain Arwel Hughes. The evening will include performances of some of Wales’ best known and emotive hymns, powerful operatic choruses and inspiring classical favourites.

Guest soloist for the opening concert will be Meinir Wyn Roberts who won the ‘International Voice of the Future’ competition at the Llangollen Eisteddfod in 2015. A rousing opening to the 2017 Eisteddfod. On November 11th they have a concert in Wrexham’s William Aston Hall, with the Three Welsh Tenors as their guests.

Both Colne Valley and the Fron Male voice Choir competed in the first Langollen Eisteddfod in 1947. Cory Band from South Wales will also be taking part.

The length of the canal in the localities named is-Llangollen (rural), 3 miles 57 chains (£257 assessment); Llangollen (Urban), 2 miles 42 chains (£150) Llantysilio, 70 chains ( £80), the total length being -7 miles 3 chains in the three parishes, and the gross assessable value £750, with a net rateable value of £487. The

reasons given by the company for seeking the reduction are losses they have sustained in the three years, viz. 1914, £7,000; 1915, £14,000; 1916, £20,000. This, of course, is on the entire system, of which the Llangollen portion is only a small section, and the deficit is largely accounted for by the sums paid by the company to servants in their employ. The appeal was first made to the Corwen Assessment Committee, who, without prejudice, offered to reduce the assessment to £400 gross.

You should all be aware now that the principle concerts for 2017 have now been announced. Ticket sales have been very encouraging and we look forward to a splendid 70th Anniversary Eisteddfod in July. Those of you who know the layout of the pavilion will understand there are a limited amount of top price seats available, so please book early for these as they do sell quickly.

Now that the concerts have been launched, there’s a real buzz in the office and this is where the pace starts picking up! I would like to thank and welcome all new volunteers who have recently joined us and remind all that there are lots of opportunities available. I would also like to thank all the choristers who turned up from all over the region to form the Celebration Chorus who will perform a work called “Calling all Dawns” in Wednesday night’s concert. The response has been fantastic, and we are thrilled that the globally renowned video game music composer Christopher Tin will be the one conducting the piece, which features his iconic work ‘Baba Yetu’.

Although I have already outlined the programme in the last update, details of which are available on the website at www.international-eisteddfod. co.uk, I would like to emphasise that we have something for everyone, choral, classical opera, crossover, traditional, popular, jazz and of course competitions of a very high standard.

An exciting competition with a new world-class prize for 2017 is International Voice of the Future (Prelim: Wednesday 5 July & Final: Thursday 6 July as part of the evening concert) which is supported

by Pendine Park and the Bryn Terfel Foundation. This prestigious prize is intended to advance the career of a young soloist, and is open to anyone under the age of 28. The competition will be held over two days. All competitors must use the Eisteddfod official accompanists for this competition. For the preliminary round competitors are required to submit a contrasting programme of up to 8 minutes of music (Oratorio/ Opera/Lieder/Song). All music should be sung in the original language.

For the Final, competitors are required to submit a contrasting programme of up to 12 minutes of music. Applications must be received by Friday 3rd March.

Prize: 1st prize: International Medal and £6000 (and an opportunity to perform in International concerts in the Eisteddfod); 2nd prize £2000 and 3rd prize £2000.

Tickets for concerts in Llangollen are exceedingly good value…where else can you enjoy classical opera for half the price of a Covent Garden ticket or a festival of popular bands including Manic Street Preachers for such a competitive price? This year we will have three outside stages in addition to the main pavilion stage. The programme for these stages will be announced in the near future, but I can assure you there’ll be a great eclectic mix over the week.

A gentle, heartwarming story, fate throws Idrissa, a young African refugee, into the path of Marcel, a kindly old bohemian who shines shoes for a living in the French harbor city of Le Havre.

Marcel, a former bohemian and struggling author, has given up his literary ambitions and become a shoe shiner. He leads a simple life that revolves around his wife Arletty, his favourite bar and his poorly paid job. One day, while fishing, Marcel sees Idrissa, who has escaped from a container full of refugees and is now on the run. Marcel, his neighbors and other townspeople decided to help to hide him from the police and immigration officials even though the local police inspector may be hot on their heels.
